I have liked Tom Waits for many years. I have never really imagined anyone but him singing his songs. Tom you style is one of a kind and I love your music. But that song was wrote for her to sing whether you knew it or not when you wrote it. I really was not expecting it to be much of anything. I almost didn't even listen to it. That was not one of the song I was looking for this evening. That is the most beautifully performed that song is ever going to be. Marissa Mulder well done.
First time hearing Marissa Mulder. Here on RUclips there are so many people who can sing well, but a voice that actually has some personality in its delivery is far less common and a Tom Waits song deserves no less, so good!
Tom Waits deserves 95% of the credit, more or less. No matter the singer or accompanist. This is simply not a song that will be surpassed by artists who cover it.
Thank you for this passionate, melancholic, elysian surprise, ambushing me in the hour between night and dawn. If better ballads of love and loss have ever been or will be written, Tom Waits or Jackson Browne will be their author. She has the perfect voice, a beautiful instrument, equal to any of the greatest. Brava! Thanks again. Subscribed. DOUG out
Oh yeah..and if I'm particularly gluttonous for punishment I'll follow it up with "Lonely"... I've listened to several versions of this but none holds a candle to Tom...
I first heard this song covered by Tim Buckley on Sefronia. Great version with Tim using his "big" voice, one of my favourite songs and also opened my eyes to Tom Waits. This version is fantastic too, I guess good song writing will always shine through.
Wonderful, one of the few covers of this song I can accept. It’s full of emotion and moreover it is interesting to think that she is talking from woman to woman.
@@tomtoce980 I commented on this video 6 years ago and often come back to it. She is an exquisitely beautiful woman and no one covers Tom Waits songs better. I bought the CD of the show. This video I'm sure will get many more views! All the best Tom!
Much better than the Take It With Me cover. Still kinda sounds like high school play singing.... but it's good. Marissa should stop doing covers and write her own songs, because she has a lot of vocal strengths, and I feel like the songs she's picking doesn't showcase them that well. I've listened to 3 so far and this one is the best.
@@alexcampbell3469 nonsense you idiot. She first performed the song as the musical guest on 'SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" in 1979. She breaks down in tears during the final verse and her version is the most stellar version of this song...period!
I disagree, the lyrics are the lyrics. I think they sound corny and like a huge reach when that’s done. Also imo the song is joyful and I think it was a great cover. Well different strokes I guess.
No offense, but the song doesn't work with her calling Martha and saying she's Tom. At least when Bette midler sang the song she changed the lyrics so that it was Betsy Frost calling. Tommy. The singing was good, but you need to change the lyrics to make sense.
This is absolute perfection. I've watched this a million times. Love you Marissa.
Thank you Marissa. Love this song and your great rendition. I'm 74 and I know the feeling of talking to someone that i loved long ago.
Soulful .. Beautiful rendition, thank you.
I don’t know whether I want this sung at my funeral or my wedding
Why not both?
This song breaks me thinkin gof the one that I still burn for. One of my favorite Waits songs. Thanks for the video!

I was introduced to this song by Meatloaf on one of his non- Jim Steinman albums. Makes me cry every time.
Could not have said it better.
Reminds me so much of a long lost love.....can't stop playing it...what a voice....and what a last line... thank you Tom...
Made me cry. Absolutely beautiful. The feeling she puts into her singing. Captivating performance of this Tom Waits classic
Oh dear, you got me there, Marissa Mulder. That was just beautiful. Beautiful!! Tom W must love this too.
So good. Truly magnificent.
Sitting here blubbering like a fool on New Year's Day. Masterfully done.
I've done that/
I know your feeling! Been there many times!
what lovely pretty poetry sung so beautifully with care . Made my heart ache .
I am 76 Years old but this song makes me young again, Thanks Tom. Both Toms.

There's so much talent out there. And mostly autotuned junk is consumed. It's sad.
What a beautiful cover and Tom is a hard act to follow,
She keeps it simple and heartfelt
Great. Thanks from Ireland.
This absolutely fantastic, I love her!
My Mother's name was Martha. I love this song.

Listened to this several times. Have searched sveral covers, this remains by far my favourite
Simply gorgeous. Every time I hear Tom Waits sing it, it makes me cry. She does a very soulful version of this very beautiful song.

Thanks Mysterious Chicago for bringing me here
Beautiful.
Wow!! So beautiful
Beautiful rendition!
What a great performance. Bravo!
God damn this is a great song and performance
One of my ABSOLUTE favour8s; well summed up all those years with mo tomorrows. ROSES Marissa!!

It,s the last line of the song that really gets you,so true about young love ,ahh the memories.
Simply stunning!!

Absolutely captivating performance.
A beauty singing a beauty ! This song means só much too me.
This is just wonderful!

Beautiful version of a beautiful song!
This one gets me.!.!.!!! Great
Hearing anyone try to sing a Tom song makes you appreciate how great he really is.
Deeply moving
Great performance. Greets from a German fan.
just captivating, great cover!
Beautiful voice.
So beautiful.
That was beautiful.
What a beautiful voice
The best actor of a song since sinata

A beautiful interpretation of a beautiful song.
Such a lovely song anyway but this a lovely version 💕👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
What beauty...
Stunning. Epic
Very good cover, the meaning could be felt in how it was conveyed.
really nice!
Another GREAT cover. Bette Midler doing “Shiver me timber’s”. Look for the concert version that was cut from the film.
thank you
Be happy with your beautiful memories, you can’t go back.
Wonderful.
In general, a comedian shouldn't laugh at their own jokes. I don't know how Marissa held back tears when singing this song.
amazing
May I do a couple of suggestions?
Camille O'Sullivan - Take it with me and All the World is Green
I’m 55. This song eats me from the inside out.
Lovely xxxx
I would like to hear what Martha had to say
❤️
Yes but she wasn’t paying for the call 😂
Anybody know the key signature that was in? I'm guessing E flat, but my ear is questionable.
Young lady. Thank you for the song. It was wonderful.
It's in the key of love and longing....
@@fretfix1 haha and yeah it's in E flat
Perfect
Wat een mooie leuke vrouw en prachtig gezongen dit lied!

I think she's amazingly attractive, and she reminds me of my sister. I think I have many problems . . .
wow
Is she the Midnight at the Oasis singer from the ‘70’s??
No. That was Maria Muldaur. Similar name, but no connection.
@@tomtoce980Hi Tom,
I love this performance from Marissa, so beautiful.
How many views and likes so far?

I don’t track it regularly, but I just looked and saw 83,000. That’s a lot more than any other video I’ve ever been involved in. I’m glad you asked!

I only love Waits songs when someone else than him sings them.
... and PROSES
She is Good but there is no better cover than Bette Midler's.
Nice, but original is always the best!
Way too smooth voice for the subject matter. Listen to Bette Midlers version and Tom's for a more sympathetic delivery.
Bette Midler's Version , so much better rendition of Tom Waits song !
Nonsense, Bette just flits thru the song wrapped up in her own smug self importance.
@@alexcampbell3469 nonsense you idiot. She first performed the song as the musical guest on 'SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE" in 1979. She breaks down in tears during the final verse and her version is the most stellar version of this song...period!
"My old voice?" She sounds like she's 7
😒🙄
if you don't flip the lyrics it sounds so karaoke ish. Also There are parts that just sound too joyful for your subject matter.
Pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean by "flip the lyrics"?
@@alexcampbell3469 she means swap the genders, so the song is from a woman's perspective.
I disagree, the lyrics are the lyrics. I think they sound corny and like a huge reach when that’s done. Also imo the song is joyful and I think it was a great cover. Well different strokes I guess.

Not feeling her nasal delivery at all.
That has to be one of the worst covers I've ever heard, and I only made it through the first refrain.
Beautiful.
Amazing
wow
Lovely. . . .
