Bluegill are so sweet they only need salt and pepper for seasoning. I make a deep slash on each side of the dorsal fin so I can use my fork to pull off a whole side with no bones after cooking it properly. Just my taste. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for sharing your grilling tips, Big Lew. I catch bream in my pond and typically fry them as a standard default method. Your grilling technique gives good ideas on preparing them in a more "heart-healthy" manner. As Mr. Moorer said in a comment below, I'll brine mine a bit before seasoning and grilling to not only enhance the flavor, but to improve the texture on the grill. Thanks!!
Cooking With A Little Spice: me too! I used to fry them, but I prefer them grilled now days. Charcoal may be cheaper than oil. Thanks glad you enjoyed the video.
looks good. I've been letting the bluegills grow for the last couple years in my pond. Im ready to eat some. As a kid we caught them & make a fire & snack on them, boy was that years ago
We always called them Brim, I love catching them. They are so easy to catch. We just use a cane pole with smashed up white bread on the hook. I've never actually ate any, we just threw them back in. Gonna have to try them, yours looked delicious. Thanks for sharing😃
Christy's Cooking Channel: We called 'em bream. But there are several varieties of them, these are Blue Gill bream (brim in GA). Also called pan fish b/c they fit well in frying pans. My brothers and I used to catch a lot at a lake near where we grew up I'd clean 'em be cause I was the oldest and mom would fry them whole like this. We ate a lot on camping trips too. The BBQ Pit Boys have recipe for frying BG filets in butter. I do that often and may make copy cat video of their recipe. Also, Juanelo 1946 cooks a lot of blue gill on his channel with low carb recipes. Thanks for watching Christy.
Oh my goodness, that crash you heard was my chair hitting the floor as I passed out - you never ate them ! Oh you poor thing, by far one of thee best tasting fish I've ever had - hands down. Thank you Lew, I have the same BBQ,love it.you using briquettes or lump wood ? IMHO lump wood is king.
Lew, hahaha! "Profane" gas!! I love it! Your bluegill looked DELISH indeed! I did a similar video last year called "Catching Bluegill for the Thrill and the Grill." I used butter instead of oil to lube up my fish. And the seasonings were slightly different, but I love your variation! My mouth is watering! Great show!
Mack's BBQ Team Yes, I went out to the pond Saturday morning and caught the 2 larger ones on the first and third cast with a 1/4 oz yellow rooster tail. I thought it was going to be a good day, but then for the next hour nothing! So went in to town (15 miles) that afternoon for some errands, and stopped by the bait shop and picked up some crickets. When we got back about 6:30pm caught 4 more blue gill the smaller ones, 3 catfish and a few small bass I threw the bass back. I stopped because I wanted to get the fish cleaned and cook and video done before dark. That didn't happen so I got a good excuse to use a lantern from my collection. I also grilled the 6 catfish filets and we had a meal. I didn't show the catfish because this video was about the whole bluegill. Thanks for watching!
Geez biggun, now THAT looks like some good eating right there! I've been mostly smoking & slow-cooking alot of pork & beef last couple months, but this video Big-Lew, inspired me to go fishing soon! excellent vid!!! thanks for posting my friend
BBQ, YES I DO, LOVE IT ALL. I LOVE Propane,.. Wood,.. CharCoal,.. Even pine needles. I love gas grills with a side burner, because it doesn't make smoke and fumes or splatter inside. Besides that the heat buildup in the hot summer is not needed inside. Anyone who knows how to cook doesn't measure??? Bahhh. I know how to turn tender mostly cooked food without the lemon falling out. I wouldn't use tongs on tender fall apart fish, and if I did I would pick it up from the same side that the lemon wants to fall out of. My preference would be to use a thin fish spatula in conjunction with an implement to prevent the tender fish from falling apart as you roll it over. Just sayin', if you know how to cook.
I like wrapping each individual fish in aluminum foil and grill them. That way, they won't lose the flavor from the seasonings. The same way that you would do with corn on the cob.
Seth Winters I used to do 12 inch catfish like that in aluminum. Funny thing is I got another comment the other day about the dangers of using aluminum foil. thanks for watching.
I love my BSR Sportsman Grill but it just does not have the cooking surface to cook enough Bluegill for two people. Those Gills were looking great. Thanks for sharing the fun...
They do not show on the Lodge web site. I do know that there are Asian knock offs but that's not my thing. I think the 3060 is only vintage. Also I don't think BSR made it only Lodge but I am not 100% sure on that. I restore cast iron as a hobby but no where near the level as some. I have a lot of skillets size #8 and smaller that need a new home. The larger skillets, dutch ovens and chicken fryers sell fast but it seems like I come home with a lot of skillets.!
Best eating fish. Only thing is they are smaller then what most people tend to eat. But alot of folks are missing out. A simple recipe is to clean it up like that, take salt and little black pepper with minced up garlic. Rub it all in let marinate and deep fried that sucker. Best thing ever👍🏽
Tom Horsman I used to collect them (still do on occasion). I got rid of a bunch when I moved about 2½ years ago but I still have about 35 lanterns and 8 or 9 stoves. You will see several Coleman lanterns in many of my videos. I have them and enjoy using them. I could have worse hobbies than Coleman collecting. Thanks for watching.
I've only eaten bluegill a certain amount of times, but they were fileted without the pin bones attached. Now I'm not sure if they were bluegill or redear sunfish (shellcracker). I was only a teenager at the time and I always called every sunfish species "bream". I only remember them being huge fish that were caught. My cousin caught them for my family and they were already fileted. Anyways, I don't think I have ever eaten bluegill whole like that, especially grilled. I'm always afraid of choking on a pin bone, of just the annoyance of having to spit them out all the time. Any tips on that subject?
You use a fork to scrape the femur of the spine, just like eating any other fish whole, or bone in but only smaller. Do you whole catfish? How about flounder, red snapper et.
EazyDuzItBro, Gald you asked, it's Big Lew BBQ, just in case you are wondering. If you want to I can send you reminder emails daily, just so you won't forget.
We played a drinking game watching this video. Every time you said take a shot. Wow had to watch it again because was to drunk to remember what I was watching. Lol. Good video though
I dont like the fact that they are somewhat bottom feeders. But the lake i fish at is filled with them and they are so easy to catch yet kinda small. The largest one i caught there is like 12 inches. But I might grill some this week.

Gave most away to family, in five gallon bucket fulls. A day to remember as a youngster!
javiphotog37 well it’s spelled Big Lew, so the game must have worked with you. I didn’t want you to forget whose show you were watching. Yet you did anyway.
joanna lanzoni: I don't really know, because it doesn't really matter. You eat the skin with each bite so you get to taste the seasonings. The skin is very thin and easy to eat. Thank you for watching.
Zachary Gamble Hey Zachary this is Big Lew of Big Lew BBQ. I really appreciate you watching my Big Lew BBQ channel. But just Incase you forgot you were watching Big.Lew BBQ.
Greg Stamatopoulos I would suppose you can. I’ve deep fried smaller Crappie whole like this. So I’m fairly certain smaller ones would work. I think larger ones would too, because I’ve seen videos where people have Grilled whole Tilapia and a Tilapia is about the size of a Crappie. (I’m used to calling them Sac-a-Lait. ). Thanks for watching.
Greg Stamatopo. In answer to your question, the answer is no, you can't cook crappie and perch the same way. They might explode. You takes your chances, iffen you wants to.
Big Lew what state do you live in I would like to move out of crazy California and move to a state like yours I can tell it looke nice where you live worm water fish is what I want in my older days
Greg Stamatopoulos Not very long, just a couple of minutes or so. I’m hesitant to give an exact time because it varies with how hot your grill is. There was one fish in this video that took a little longer than the others because it was in a slightly cooler area of the grill. Turn them once the fish flesh becomes flakey but before they burn. It doesn’t take very long so don’t walk away. Sorry I can’t be more helpful with an exact time. Thanks for watching.
Howdy Lew, have you ever tried this recipe with Crappie or grilling Crappie? I love me some fried Crappie but as I'm getting older I try to find healthier alternatives. I'm subbing right after I leave this message. Cheers
Rusty KC Yes, I have grilled Crappie, (a.k.a Sac-a-lait or white perch) they are delicious grilled in like manner. Unfortunately my pond is too small for crappie and it has been a few years since I've caught any. Please try it let us know how you like it. Thanks for watching, commenting and subscribing.
"If you can cook you dont need to measure, if you can't cook you need to measure"........that might be my new life slogan to live by!
Bluegill are so sweet they only need salt and pepper for seasoning. I make a deep slash on each side of the dorsal fin so I can use my fork to pull off a whole side with no bones after cooking it properly. Just my taste. Thanks for the video.
This is how I used to cook them as a kid, they are the best tasting fresh water fish I ever had. Way better than any trout I ever tasted.
I have a Coleman 220 E August 1955. Bluegill are my favorite, I’m going to grill up some next time.
Love this video and the simplicity of it. Absolutely great. And I definitely have a bad case of lantern envy. Thanks bud!!
I have never thought of grilling blue gill...looks delicious!
don johnson Thank you
the secret to cooking bluegill is to say "big lew bbq" about 7 times
@@Theflyestfisherman 🤣🤣
You should brine them in salt water for ten minutes before grilling and they wont fall apart on the grill.
Nice tip . I'ma try it thanks
Going to try this tonight
Thanks for sharing your grilling tips, Big Lew. I catch bream in my pond and typically fry them as a standard default method. I'm watching this while feeding my pet bluegill 😋
Well now you went and got me all excited for fishing 🎣
Love that little light of yours .... it’s shinning bright 😎 great opening verse too 👍🏻
This is an old one, but I appreciate you watching.
I had to watch this one again. Can't wait to get back to Michigan and catch a bunch of them!
Very cool video I used to catch bluegill a lot as a kid.
I’ve never grilled them before thanks I’m going to try it. They are my fav eating fish in the water
A trick I learned with fish is keeping the scale on as it allows for higher heat and keeps the flesh moist, it peels off nicely after grilling.
aling51 Good idea. I’ve done that with some salt water fish like red fish, but not fresh water fish. So I’ll have to try it.
Loved the comment "if you can't cook, you need to measure." Nice video. Makes me hungry.
Bill Strack Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it.
great video ! i love the old lantern thanks for sharing
mullz1 thank you for watching. I used to collect lanterns and fix them up it was a fun hobby.
We always called them Brim, I love catching them. They are so easy to catch. We just use a cane pole with smashed up white bread on the hook. I've never actually ate any, we just threw them back in. Gonna have to try them, yours looked delicious. Thanks for sharing😃

Big Lew BBQ, It's probably spelled bream in GA too😂😂I spell as bad as I pronounce😞
Christy's Cooking Channel No, I think "brim" is correct in East Coast states.

Juanelo you are so KIND :)
Hi Catfish Nature! How's it going buddy? Good to see you!
It's going great ! How about you ?
👍✌️👌
A couple of those looked to be pretty good size. Nice job

julio alvaro Gracias, estuvieron rico.
Thanks, they were great.
Big Lew BBQ nice
Did not know you could eat blue gills. I know you can eat anything really. But didn’t know people ate them.
I eat anything really. In my latest video I eat peanut shells.
I hate that Damn "Profane" Gas and all sorts of"Profane"products!
Damnit Bobby! HAHAHAHA
Yes not a fan of the profane gas! Thanks for watching!
@Foo Young Did you not listen to the video? He says "Profane" IT'S CALLED HUMOR! GET A LIFE.

I love my BSR Sportsman Grill but it just does not have the cooking surface to cook enough Bluegill for two people. Those Gills were looking great. Thanks for sharing the fun...
Larry Stephens You are right I should get another one then I'll have two! Maybe one day ... even a third!
Get the 3060 deep pan. 4 inches deep.!
Larry Stephens Is it still made or only vintage ones.
They do not show on the Lodge web site. I do know that there are Asian knock offs but that's not my thing. I think the 3060 is only vintage. Very good looking fish
No Hippie BBQ & Cooking Thanks Lyle. I did this last summer.
I enjoyed your interview last night.

Lex Sounds Delicious!

Do you know what type of grill this is
i'm with you about the blue gills, I think i'm gonna try that with piggy perch on the coast. same size fish. Now you have me thinking

Awesome video what’s the name and type of grill is this? Looks perfect for fish!!
Hotep Namaste Zlodge Sportsman grill.
Big Lew BBQ wow you’re awesome!!! You responded so quickly you’ve got a new subscriber!!! Looking forward to more videos!!! Hotep
Hotep Namaste Thank you but it may be a while before I make any new videos.

The old style Lodge Sportsman’s grill
Head is the best part lol 😂
Lookin Good, Love the Coleman, wish I still had one
Tom Horsman I used to collect them (still do on occasion). I got rid of a bunch when I moved about 2½ years ago but I still have about 35 lanterns and 8 or 9 stoves. Big Lew BBQ Thank you!
Stupid question.
Can you eat the find just like whole fried bluegill?
I actually love Bluegill. What you

“Big bluegill is an oxymoron” don’t you worry lew. We know some hogs when we see them!!

hahahaha okay ill send you it in a dm.
EazyDuzItBro Of course, and as always thanks for watching Big Lew BBQ.
We played a drinking game watching this video. Every time you said take a shot. Wow had to watch it again because was to drunk to remember what I was watching. Lol. Good video though
Thanks for the how to. Since they cook so quick, what if you burned a pile of sticks in your grill and then cooked over the coals?
Great question have you ever been on a barbecue cooking contest
Ashleytoy reviews No I haven't.
Big Lew BBQ ok didn't think so
Ashleytoy reviews How about you have you cooked in competitions?
Big Lew BBQ no unfortunately not
I dont like the fact that they are somewhat bottom feeders. But the lake i fish at is filled with them and they are so easy to catch yet kinda small. The largest one i caught there is like 12 inches. But I might grill some this week.
That's what I've been waiting on...some grilled fish. Nice cook, especially with keeping it from sticking
Smoking with Bush: Oil the grates and oil the fish. Thanks for watching.
Nice nice, I haven't grilled seafood before, but that is something I'll have to try soon.
Smoking with Bush. Stephen Raichlen says if it taste good fried it will taste even better grilled.
Looks delicious!
In Lake Okeechobee (FL) they get huge with a big hump on their head. My grandfather called them "shell crackers" or 'stump knockers". You can actually smell them in the air when they are bedding in large areas. Get out of the boat and stand right in the beds. Once day we estimated we caught ~500 among three of us. Gave most away to family, in five gallon bucket fulls. A day to remember as a youngster!
Oren That sound like a lot of fun! Thanks for watching and commenting.
you and gramps sound like real sportsmen
Yeah we have them in Jersey...we call them bullhead Gils...when u cut the head off...angle up in tbe front of that hump...good meat
Cool video
What’s the entire grilling time for each side?
Thomas R Sunday not very long.
Ahhh yeah...Heavenly sent.
Good job big lou
troyalbrecht Thank you! It had been a while since I did this one.
Pretty hot fire, Big Lew.
matthew adams Probably so, but it worked. Thanks for watching.
Stay in their lemon wedge lol
When grilling can you eat the fins?
The tail somewhat, but for the most part no.
And use a spatula, not tongs
Drunkle Lue. Everyone has one.
(Looks great though)!
Ha
Take a shot every time he says big lue bbq
New drinking game...every time he says “big Lou bbq” drink
javiphotog37 well it’s spelled Big Lew, so the game must have worked with you. I didn’t want you to forget whose show you were watching. Yet you did anyway.
Big Lew BBQ dam it auto correct sucks, I spelled it big Lew but it must of autocorrected to Lou, my bad!!
Punch some holes in acan of tuna or salmon drop it in the water near where your gonna be fishing give it 30nin and enjoy the catch
Tuna in water ? -or oil ? I'm thinking oil.....
Do the seasonings penetrate the skin?
joanna lanzoni: I don't really know, because it doesn't really matter. You eat the skin with each bite so you get to taste the seasonings. The skin is very thin and easy to eat.
Thank you for watching.
Who's barbecue was it again?
Zachary Gamble Hey Zachary this is Big Lew of Big Lew BBQ. I really appreciate you watching my Big Lew BBQ channel. But just Incase you forgot you were watching Big.Lew BBQ.
Big Lew BBQ funny guy! It's almost BBQ season here in Michigan again lew
Zachary Gamble when my 15 year old daughter does the camera work I say Big Lew BBQ so that she will know when to cut.
How great do they taste grilled ?

How did you stop them from sticking to the grill racks?
K Wilson I oiled the grate, the fish had oil on it too. It also was a well seasoned cast iron grate.
Big Lew what state do you live in I would like to move out of crazy California and move to a state like yours I can tell it looke nice where you live worm water fish is what I want in my older days

I'm going to have to try this some times just not with lemon wedges I'm not a fan of citrus on fish I'm just weird lol
I usually fillet mine..but these look good. I cant get past the scaling..messy.
How long on each side??
Greg Stamatopoulos Not very long, just a couple of minutes or so. I’m hesitant to give an exact time because it varies with how hot your grill is. Awsome bible verse
