- Here we see a very rare and interesting consist being transferred through the system. Here we see a train of R33WF Redbirds, R58 Refuse Flatcars, and an R62A single unit from 239th St Yard being used to bring a train of four R33WF redbirds from 207 St Yard to 239 St Yard. Enjoy!

Good bless New York City for its great transit history! I was born and raised in The Bronx, so I had the privilege of riding the Redbird along the IRT#6 Line during the 80's and 90's! Man, it was fun to catch an Express #6 at 125th Street. Once the Redbirds got on the express track at 138th Street, you were in for a helluva ride. I swear the motor men took full advantage and had those babies race along the 6 Line. Especially when it went above ground and made that sharp right turn passed the Whitlock Avenue Station. You'd think the trains were gonna fly off the track. Man, pre-9/11 NYC was the best...
@Jose Morales I remember riding the Redbirds on the (2) (4) (5) and the (6) line during the 1980's and the 1990's as a child. The Redbirds are my favorite trains on the NYC subway system. I also remember visiting the twin towers prior to 9/11. I miss the twin towers a lot and NYC is not the same without them.
Finely someone who respects the NYC subway
We finally get to see the Redbirds in me last time
R33wf rebirds train I rode when I was little from the 7 and 6 line. I miss these train with flickering lights.
@Jeremy, damn, that just brought back some memories Especially when they cross tracks! Lmao
Wow. It’s funny seeing just a single R62A operating by itself.
They are basically those refuse locomotives with windows and passenger seats
When these trains can no longer be used in work service they should be restored by the Transit Museum.
There are already many Redbirds in the museum. It’s possible that some may be saved but others will be sent off property.
@@davidng2336 I just think the more Redbirds the better. It is my hope that one day there will be a fantrip consisting entirely of World's Fair Redbirds. The TOMC is nice but a full Redbird consist would be really cool.
@@blakemcnamara9105agree that would’ve amazing
They go in the ocean
@@imightormightnot That program ended in 2010.
Its great to see these fleets of ex- Blue Birds nee- Red Birds & R 62 A cars. They all have in common they're all ex Flushing line & Pelham Bay line cars! 😀. Thank you Dj Hammers these videos made are great I enjoy watching them. 👋👋👋👋👋👋 🚃🚃🚃🚃🚇
imagine seeing a dude with an entire camera recording the train ur on while ur tryna get home through the subway
lollollol
Hey @ DJ hammer trains. You made us so happy. You are our best friend we ever had. Be careful with the thunder ⚡ okay. Stay safe. Bye-bye
1:10 Route Five! Saddening to see these classics in such rough condition. It's been decades since the Red Bird rebuilding campaign was taking place, yet it feels like it was just a few years ago.
I'm so happy to have seen a couple of these pass by during my childhood days in New York. I always wondered what these were for.
Glad a few Redbirds were kept as work cars. They should be restored when work service is done and displayed at the Transit Museum.😀😀
There are a couple of R33WF cars 9307 and 9308 that were repainted in their original paint scheme and occasionally operate in excursion service.
That was a great video DJ! Keep these videos up. We love these videos.
Damn!! I remember riding these trains while growing up as a kid in the 80s........
its good to see them back on the tracks!
New York has so many different and interesting service metros! cool video
Super! Thank you from Russian cabview 🇷🇺🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🤓👍🏻
Great Up to date, Video Work!
As Always; Excellent NYC transit videos, Mr. Hammers!
(These pre-stainless steel cars, brings back memories, Growing up on 219th Street and White plains road.
It's great to see some vegetation in the 239th, and 180th St. Street yard, as I recall this as a kid growing up in the Bronx in the 1960s.
I'm currently modeling parts of these two yards, in HO scale, with the idea of using some variety of vegetation, and not just a gravel wasteland of a yard).
Thanks again for sharing.
Noo wayyyy I just moved from 219 and white planes
@@urbexfloxks1641
Hi Kai,
Yes I grew up there from the mid 1950s and moved out of 219th St. in 1980.
(But I would still drive by from time to time as I worked in The Bronx until 2003.
Actually grew up between Barns, and Bronxwood Ave., And 219th St.).
Late 60s through mid-70s, I'd take the #2, or #5, Lex, Thru Express, into Manhattan everyday.
@@larrydee8859 ooooh that was 2 blocks from me
I remember when retired BMT Standards were used on garbage collection trains in the 1960s on the Broadway Jamaica line.
So rare yet so beautiful ❤️ I only rode those trains twice as a kid, sucks they are out of service now 🥺 :(
why they out of service
@@maknyc1539 they got old :(
Hi, this is Jerry Seinfeld. Please do your best to practice social distancing on the train and in the station. Staying 6 feet apart is not only a great way to keep our city safe, think how much you’ll save not needing cologne! 😂 I bet that gets a little old to listen to. Cool video!
Awesome catch! Would love to see a set of Redbirds restored for transit fan trips.
Many have been restored already
My earliest memories of the Redbird's existence was on a train like this. An R127 or 134 was leading with a few of these R58 "flats," trailed by a pair of Redbirds, still completely red and carrying the 7 rollsign! It must've been a year or so since they were last removed from service
Miss these types of trains
Who here missed the Redbirds?
I do, why you look like the E train ? Lol
I keep forgetting that these cars can still move under their own power.
lol
They’re in for an upgrade with the r32 trains that have ac!
Nice video like and subscribed from Czech Republic 🙂👍👍👍👍
20 years after they were retired from passenger service and they're still here. They've certainly seen better days though. Expect the single unit R62As to remain in work service for a long time after they are retired from passenger service when the R262s come in.
Been too long for me to see the Redbirds
are there any r62 working trains on line 7 if yes how often drives they?
That Bolt of Electricity at 1:25
All the hun I had on the 7 red birds form going to school and to Shea Stadium I miss just staring out the front car window
Not sure if that continues to IRT but I heard there is universal compatibility with every train between the R10 and R68A (except the R44 and R46, as they use different couplers).
How often does this run? Also its a dam shame what did to 96 street local platforms. I use to go there just to walk the old platform. They did the same at 42 street when i went there. Sad
11:58 homie was on there floor LMAOOOOO
so cool
You should do a 2 train to Flatbush Ave via 7th Ave Express Brooklyn and Bronx Local
Great catch!
I’m surprised some of the R62As for the 6 are still singles. Anyways this is a cool catch. Not many Redbirds still being used now.
Some were intentionally kept as singles to substitute for the redbirds during the summer
When they ran on the 7, the singles were used to make 11 car trains. On the 6, they can just put all the singles together to make extra trains, or use them in work service throughout the A Division, since the redbird work cars and the R127/R134 are not air conditioned.
A great video thanks
How come they use a R62A in good condition for maintenance service?
I see this consist at south ferry 1 line 530 am twice a week picking up garbage I hope they are not scrapping those red birds
Are they gonna scrap them since there's barely any use for them?
They been using them for garbage I don't think they are scrapping them this consist is usually on the 1 line early am
I want one NOW

Lindley Brath's Masterpiece Theater
Why are they being moved?
My clip wasn't there, rip
Anyone know how long a former revenue subway car usually last in maintenance service?
Awesome
the subway may be good but family is better
How many R-62A singles are there left?
All u have to do is un couple the cars every r62/a can be a single just like the r68
@@urbexfloxks1641 With the exception of 25 cars, the R62As can no longer be operated in single units. The cars were converted into 5-car units linked by link-bars. With the conversion of the 21 R62As on the 42nd Street Shuttle into 6-car units, there will be very few R62A singles left.
@@TheRailLeaguer IINM they encompass the 1930s, 1940s, 1950s and 1960. Even with 21 cars on the shuttle, that means they can make up three six-car R-62A lashups and still have three leftover singles.
@@8avexp Yeah. Some of those cars are on the 42nd Street Shuttle, and will be converted to 6-car ops.
@@TheRailLeaguer so how come all the r62/a have driver cabs on both sides
I’m ready lol
Nice
A R62 train car by itself looks weird. I didn’t realize they weren’t married pairs.
Anyone know the reason for that lash-up of a work car between two diesels? I've been seeing this in each video where an R-211 train is being hauled. Thanks in advance!
The car in between the two diesels is there to put space in between them. Two of those older model diesels when next to each other, are too heavy for the elevated track structure of NYC Transit. The spacer car in between them spreads the load farther apart so the track can support the weight. This does not apply to the new blue diesels, which can operate next to each other.
@@alanbaum3228 Thanks, Alan. I knew there had to be a simple explanation, and that makes perfect sense. I hadn't considered that those two diesels together could be too heavy for the elevated structures!
No problem
