Elle and Toni took me to the Chicks and that brought me here. Quite a trip, but this man! WOW! Just the man, his talent and his guitar. Enough for me. Im going to listen again in wonder!
First time I saw him was at Davis Kidd bookstore (Nashville) where he was with Suzi Ragsdale and Verlon Thompson. Blown away. Immediately bought Aloha From Nashville. Great artist!
I have just discovered Darryl Scott, though it turns out I am familiar with his music. He was a guest artist of Zac Brown at Wrigley Field. Great moment to see him play Great Day to Be Alive in front of 40,000+. Nice to see him get the recognition as a great song writer.
Brandon Barquist same thing happened to me at Darien lake with zbb a few years ago, for me it was the song “there ain’t no easy way” and since then Iv been listening to Darrel and Tim O’Brien non stop with every album
Heard this song covered on "the voice" by one of the contestants. Had to look it up after hearing the song. Found this legend. This is a masterful performance. Blown away by the complete artistry of Darrell Scott, the performance in this video speaks for itself. Much respect!
Darrell Scott is so cool. My husband took me to see him at the Leeds center in Larry, Ks. It was delightful -- it was a very small room and he was right there like a college professor giving a lecture. (After the show, my husband took me to the Sonic out where I-70 starts. He had a chocolate malt and I had a diet limeade with a cherry -- Heaven.)
He's such a fantastic guitarist! Everyone focuses upon his songwriting ability, which makes sense, because he's an incredible lyricist, but we shouldn't forget the fact that this guy can flatpick like Doc Watson and hit country-blues riffs like Lightnin' Hopkins!
They sound tired, but they dont sound Haggard They got money, but they dont have Cash They've got Jr.' but they dont have Hank.. I think The rest is a long time gone
Watching this video is like sitting in on a guitar lesson. WOW! This was the first song that brought me to the Chicks. Their last two albums were phenomenal! Too bad the Teapublicans took them down!
Thanks for the response, since I wrote that question, I found out that it is a Taylor, Koa that isnt produced anymore. Though I have found a Takamine Koa with electronics that is new out and I am currently looking at.
True. But my point was, it was not the 'fans' that were complaining. It was various national organizations, stoking the flames. Clear Channel and the other big ones told the stations not to play them anymore. Maybe at the request of the White House? And they kept the phone banks busy, with callers pretending to be locals. Yes, the once-fans were upset. But where did this hatred come from? Would it have been so incendiary if it hadn't been organized from above? (I'm done replying on this topic)
For whatever reason, they were gunned down. By the religious right, by Clear Channel, by once-fans that felt betrayed because they had left country behind... Those calls local stations were flooded with mostly weren't local. They were from a few national organizations, out to get them. The episode was blown so far out of proportion. I'm just glad they renegotiated their contract with Sony for their final two albums, so they could live comfortably.
What MLIN20 said - you couldn't get Merle Haggard played on country radio nowadays except with a bag o money or a gun. (Hey, there's a song in there somewhere)
Facts! Dixie chicks named their band from the song by little feat.this song was a cover that dixie chicks did one one of their albums.this guy wrote this song along with tim obrien. Just saying !
most of there fans were right leaning and did not like them bad mouthing America when they were overseas. They had the right to say what they wanted and the fans had the right to walk away
My guess they're not fans of the Dixie Chicks (politics)... I'm not a fan of their politics either (their music is a different story), but the man has to get paid!
That was Badass!!!
came here from the dixie chick's version. and what i find is thiis dude performing a song with pure genius. just dug me my own rabbithole...
A lot has changed in 16 years. Glad to see it's still here on RUclips
Elle and Toni took me to the Chicks and that brought me here. Quite a trip, but this man! WOW! Just the man, his talent and his guitar. Enough for me. Im going to listen again in wonder!
This has been the greatest thing on RUclips for 14 years now..
First time I saw him was at Davis Kidd bookstore (Nashville) where he was with Suzi Ragsdale and Verlon Thompson. Blown away. Immediately bought Aloha From Nashville. Great artist!
17 years and now I hear it. God is good and He likes good music
Not only can this cat Scott write a tune, but has serious guitar chops.
Such a talent and so humble. Doing it his way.
Fantastic player and writer.
What an artist.
This man is truly a national treasure!
There is just nothing like this guy... smokes me every time.
Wow! I always loved the Dixie Chicks rendition, but this is beyond amazing!

Most players dread not having any backup but with Darrell, anything extra would just take away from his performance. Amazing rythm and feel.
A musician like no other. Whatever it takes, see Darrel live before you leave this earth OR your life will be incomplete. Promise :-)
I've seen Darrell Scott live several times. I always leave thinking the same thing -- What an amazing musician, singer, and songwriter!!!
Heard this song covered on "the voice" by one of the contestants. Had to look it up after hearing the song. Found this legend. This is a masterful performance. Blown away by the complete artistry of Darrell Scott, the performance in this video speaks for itself. Much respect!
One of the most complete performers I have ever seen.

I saw him at Camper fest here in Knoxville about 15 years ago and he wore that guitar out.
He's such a fantastic guitarist! Everyone focuses upon his songwriting ability, which makes sense, because he's an incredible lyricist, but we shouldn't forget the fact that this guy can flatpick like Doc Watson and hit country-blues riffs like Lightnin' Hopkins!
Great Songwriter.. under-rated Singer/guitarist .. well not by us in the know
He can go hard
I have had the fortune to see him in concert in my city Genova Italy...with brad davis and beppe gambetta.....amazing!!!!!
One of my FAVORITE live tunes!!!
I loove this song by Darrell and by Chicks. Both versions are AWESOME! Also More Love is a amazing song.
I suspect that Darrel is tickled that this song was sampled on Beyonce/Dixie Chicks collaboration of Daddy's lessons!!
Darryl is an amazing gem.
That right there is one crazy ass song!!! That was me!
Oh man, so much groove in that solo
WOOOOOO, this boy can play! I hope he didn't trade his soul or nothin!
speechless! an incredible guitarist-singer !
Amazing!
Amazing
This man, this man! I could listen to his stylin' all day long...some times I do, now tha I think of it!
Mi piace la sua voce e la sua versione. Bravo Bravo Bravo.
Best version of this song
They sound tired, but they dont sound Haggard
They got money, but they dont have Cash
They've got Jr.' but they dont have Hank.. I think
The rest is a long time gone
started to learn some of his songs....it ain't easy....did "great day to be alive" at an open mic....just crashed! Long time gone is spectacular!
First time hearing this. Think I heard the Chicks do it-but never cared for that version. Man what Energy and Soul!
Real Time is one of my favorite albums too...both him and Tim are great talents...the third verse he talks about is such a great verse
awesome ! man can play and sing.
I want to be able to play what he's forgotten.
Agree. Watching his chord vamps reminds me that there are some people out there that play the damn box rather than noodle on it.
So do i !
The left hand most definitely DOES know what the right hand is doing. This man. Come on!
Great song and guitarist
Heard this on hbo's true detective, had to look it up, love it..
Watching this video is like sitting in on a guitar lesson. WOW!
This was the first song that brought me to the Chicks. Their last two albums were phenomenal! Too bad the Teapublicans took them down!
Wonderful version! Darrell is unbelievable. As a note for my own future reference and others, 2:20 is where the music starts.
Very much talent my friend. 0:52
AWESOME !! 👍👍
Awesome chops!
I've always loved the chicks version of this song, but this version is just unbelievable. Straight from the heart to the hands and the voice...

His soundchecks were better than some bands shows!!!

Thanks for the response, since I wrote that question, I found out that it is a Taylor, Koa that isnt produced anymore. Though I have found a Takamine Koa with electronics that is new out and I am currently looking at.
Damn I wish I could pick like that!
2:30 OMG awesome rhytmic lick! peace yo!
Absolutly love this clip! Sorry mrs Dixie chick but this version kicks ass:P
DAMN
I didn't care much for the Live in NC album, but Theater of the Unheard, Invisible Man and Real Time are tremendous albums. :)
Fucking awesome!!!!!

I caught wind and hit the ground running.
Check out the version with tim obrien. Love it !!
This may be the greatest song in the world (with apologies to Tenacious D)
kinda got the Lowell George vibe
Man that boy can pick.
Good dobro player, too.
Ubud

Like this better than the Chicks!
Their version isn't crap compared to his.
I've been trying to figure out forever what guitar he's playing. He's always playing that axe and I can't ever see the make. Taylor, Gibson...?
Well, he wrote it, so...
He's pretty awesome. It's a shame the amount of people who know his songs but not through him. There much better from the horses guitar.
she said she was ashamed of the USA and there practices. she can say what she wants , but cant cry when sales drop
blccleaning She was right too. Never apologized because she spoke the truth. See, Not Ready to Make Nice. “I made my bed and I sleep like a baby...”
if you are gonna talk the talk ,you got to walk the walk. people did not like what they said so sales dropped.
+Darrell Scott for 20 million views
