- A playthrough of Konami's 1998 action/platform game for the Sony PlayStation, Castlevania Chronicles.
Played through on the Original mode.
At 52:56 I show the FMV ending for Arrange mode, and at 53:20 is the unlockable video interview with Koji Igarashi.
Castlevania Chronicles is a pure, unadulterated "old school" Castlevania game. It does not follow the post-Symphony of the Night 2D titles, but rather, it plays very much like the NES Castlevania games. The reason for this is that it is a port of Akumajou Dracula, a Castlevania game that was released exclusively on the Japanese Sharp X68000 computer back in 1993.
This game was a really cool effort by Konami to bring a previously unknown classic to the west. It featured an "original" mode, which was essentially a perfect port of the original game: the only notable change was the loss of the floppy disk load times. The big draw for many, though, was the "arrange" mode that changes a fair number of things. It gave you the option between the original X68k FM soundtrack (the one played in original mode), a remixed redbook audio one, or the X68k soundtrack as it sounded when played through a Roland midi module (a relatively common but pricey option that many games supported). It also changes the player sprite to have flowing magenta hair, provides a difficulty option, and kills the knock-back effect when you get hit by something - overall, this is the mode for people that don't want the sheer difficulty of the original game. It's much easier, and far more accessible without hours and hours of practice and memorization.
Of course, that's all a matter of preference. I prefer the harder original mode, but I absolutely think that more casual players will prefer the less harsh difficulty level of the arrange mode. The original mode is outright punishing until you've logged a whole lot of hours getting to know it.
The original art from the X68000 holds up really nicely in this one. Granted, it was an incredibly powerful machine in its day, but the original is now almost 25 years old. It's aged impressively well. I loved Castlevania 1-4 (2 is by far my favorite, though I know many people seem to hate it), and Chronicles really focuses on that same style. I've often thought of it as a hyper-beefed up 16-bit sequel to Super Castlevania IV.
With it being Halloween soon (and Friday the 13th even sooner), I figured this would be a fun nod to the mood for creepy retro games.

And trust me, I love challenging games, but the challenging in Classicvanias is very artificial and unfair.
Castlevania Chronicles is a fantastic old school Castlevania title that we were pretty lucky to finally get a US release of.
If you loved 8 and 16-bit Castlevania games and haven't played this yet, you should immediately go to eBay and buy a copy. Totally worth it.

Whoever worked on this games music HAD to have worked on at least ONE of the Splatterhouses.
Actually its the same instruments, long story short this the ps1 port ofa game released on an old japanese computer the Sharp X68000 which was host to a perfect conversion of namco's splatter house, infact the computer itself was known for its arcade perfect ports and amazing sound capabilities

It did, however, come out on another Japan-exclusive computer, called "FM Towns".
I never even new this game existed and I used to own a PlayStation. I thought Symphony of The Night was the only Castlevania game that came out for this system.
It is a little sad more people didn't know about this game. But then, they were probably distracted by Symphony of the Night which is, no disrespect to the classics, way better.
I have played this game & did played both versions of it but this game was average at best & still remember using Game shark to beat it!

Aha, now I know where M2 took notes from when they created Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth. They look and feel really alike, down to soundtrack style.

This game is so underrated. Everyone talks about Rondo, or SC4 (admittedly better games) but Chronicles is right up there.
Don't forget about Castlevania Bloodlines.

Imagine Simon tripping in the final battle and falling onto the floor, in the spot where Dracula has thrown his glass at - cutting himself by the shattered glass and contracting blood infection in the process, which would instantly result in Game Over.

Definitely not just you. This is a beast of a playthrough. This game kicks my ass and feels very cheap in sections (that jumping raft section when the screen is scrolling rapidly upward is ridiculous the first few times you play it). Still a very fun game, though.

Even though it's basically a retelling of Castlevania 1, I'd like to think this takes place in an AU where Simon succumbed to Dracula's Curse and became a vampire-esqe version of himself, hence the red hair and the black attire

The more I watch this (after having thrown down on this title, 20-30 ish times) this as amazing version of the castle.. Also best version of this game imo

That's really interesting - actually seeing live prisoners in the castle. At least, I think they're alive. It'd be super creepy if they're already dead and reanimated... anyway, too bad you can't free them, hopefully they'll be fine while Simon goes and fights Dracula. ...Hopefully they get out before the place collapses.

I still own this game since its release in 2000. Arranged mode is far easier but I love the challenge of the Original mode.

Simon Belmont’s design in Super Smash Bros Ultimate is based on his appearance in the original X68k release of Castlevania Chronicles.
His design looks more like his super castle vania appearance. That's just my opinion though

This is actually just a port/release of a game that's much older. The game is actually from 93. I think Symphony was 97?
When this game came out, I didn't buy it because I mistook it for a collection of a few konami games because I never got to see the back of the case because the only game store in my neighborhood refused to show the cases to you. So I thought it was a collection of games like the namco muesuem game given the name of it. Gotta get this game a shot finally.

Konami really struggled with walking animations for a lot of these games, lol. Its so unnatural how Simon walks in this game and SCIV.
No side scrolling video game character walks like real people. It's a game nothing more.
There are plenty of side scrolling games where the character's movement looks fluid and natural, even back in the 8bit and 16 bit days. Simon looks stiff and extremely awkward both in this game and SCIV.
they wanted him to have a tough-guy walk, with a lot of attitude. Then also, he is treading a dangerous path, so he has to be silent, but not scared. This is an important contradictory concept. It was important to have his walk show that he's really enjoying smashing evil stuff, passionate about moving forward into darkness. For Simon, this is the ultimate workout, and we should all follow him in his footsteps. All of these ideas combined into one fluid continious motion that outlasts even Dracula's immortality: that's what's being coneyed into his walk right there.
Don't forget Haunted Castle. That game had Simon look like he was about to take a shit.
I picked this up around the time it came out. Really surprised me- classic Castlevania with a massive makeover. I loved the soundtrack. Sadly, the disc was lost when my CD book was inside my dad's truck that got repossessed around late 2002. Sucks, but the ROM can easily be put on PS1 classic which I did. Good stuff.

If you are a master vampire with a mansion/castle... wouldn't you have a caretaker so your place doesn't look like a dump? I'd just find a guy and be like "ok man, you and your family can live in the guest house. Deal is, you can have some of the treasure I have collected over the years and also, I won't feed on you. I will tell the zombies and skeletons and the floating eye thing with a tail to leave you alone. Here are some treats for the panthers and wolves. Maintain the place, mow the lawn once a week, patch up any leaks etc. Oh, some vampire hunter guys might come by, if that happens just be ready to clean up the mess, the minions should handle him."
Tough game, but it has been said even in the original mode, the difficulty got toned down, too bad. Still though, it is a hard son of a bitch to beat, arrange mode is easier (though Simon's sprite, yeah, doesn't seem like a vampire hunter, but a guy dressed as a woman who got lost on his way to a costume party). It was nice of Koji Igarashi and Konami to see fit that we got the game, and eventually led us to get Rondo of Blood after damned near 20 years.
The Clock Tower and Drac's castle will drive you nuts in this release, but will drive you batshit insane in the original X68K release. It does feel harder on it's original Japanese PC release. The Doll Tower dolls also speak some Japanese in the X68K release, yet oddly that is missing in the PS1 release, too bad.
That last part sounds AWESOME!!!

I can already imagine some creepy lines of an English dub.. .. ..
They are already a major pain due to the angles they come at from, and the fact they can dodge the whip, who knows what they are saying, though I'm sure someone could translate as the line is pretty clear to understand if you're fluent in Japanese.
+Bloodreign1 Ah I had totally forgotten about the dolls talking! Yeah, the voices are crystal clear. They say, "Omae wa dare?" meaning, "Who are you?" and "Kaerinasai!", or "Get out of here!" I also heard, "Yamete!" meaning, "Stop it!" I didn't hear any other voice samples, did I miss any?

If you hold L1 and R1 while starting Original Mode you can get a menu to select alternate soundtracks.
If I didn't know better, I'd swear this was a Genesis game that got touched up and ported to PSX. The music and character models reek of Sega to me. I will say the artwork for the level backgrounds is god damn amazing. So much detail in the background, it blows my mind with how rich it all is.

You know, I wrote that comment before watching 'til the end with the Iga interview. That explains so much, because it is so obviously not a Playstation game made from the ground up. Something about the character art design gives it away.

The Stained Glass Knight is one of Castlevania's oldest enemies, it predates the title of Castlevania itself, appearing in the first-first CV game, 'Haunted Castle', as did Medusa and a transforming vampire, although I don't know if he was called Dracula yet at that time, it may have just been 'the vampire'.
Please tell me that’s sarcasm. The original game came out in 1986. The much-maligned arcade game in 1988, and Bram’s novel was published in 1897!

The only complaint is the lower quality music. Its good, but the compression doesn't do the X68000 songs justice.
I've so got to get this game... Even if it is yet another remake of CV1/Vampire Killer. (I think of them all, Super Castlevania IV is the best of the remakes)

Never seen this game before. Stopped playing Castlevania after the 4th one from SNES back in the 90s. Might pick this up and try it. Looks like a remake of the 1st nes game. Great graphics though.
Why is Castlevania Chronicles, or even the original Akamajo Dracula, not remade or re-released on Steam?
While the original Castlevania is there, I prefer to play this version because it has some more variety and a deeper horror atmosphere. Not to mention, the music is just so saturated.

Castlevania Chronicles (PS1) who knows if the game would be worthwhile to pick. So the gameplay gentleman, looks really nice.
So as an alternative to Symphony of the Night. has become almost un affordable.
as far as i can tell the only reasonable way to get it is to download it if you have a ps3 on the PlayStation store

RockmanSam Oh yeah, the jumping is pretty similar to how it controller in CV4. It also lets you whip downward during a jump.

unfortunately everywhere i look i cannot find casalvania cornicles for ps1 for a reasonable price any help would be welcomed..
it's ridiculously rare. Unless you get extremely lucky and find a cheap copy locally from a goodwill or pawn shop, you're not getting it online for less than $125-150 USD. You may find one on eBay for cheap once in a blue moon from someone unaware of its rarity. Be patient and check eBay on a daily basis. Good luck.
