The WEIGHT of clutter is accurate! You're so right. It's a true burden and obstacle to living the life we dreamed of. The more I declutter, the more I want gone! If I don't want to dust it - it needs to go! ❤

The biggest reason for me was the time saved by the ease of cleaning up with less. Everyone always comments that my kitchen is so clean, but that’s only because it takes all of 5-10 minutes for me to wash all the dishes from a meal, wipe down the counters and table, and run a vacuum/mop if needed. I don’t have dozens of objects to work around and all countertop appliances are stored until they are needed. All that time saved is time I get to spend making memories with my toddler!

On the path for sometime now to reducing my 'stuff'. As I do more it feels great, lighter. My biggest challenge is finding 'homes' for the things I no longer want or need. Charity shops do not want 'everything'. The journey is worthwhile but it takes more time than I initially thought.

Joshua, you will always be my hero and mentor. I watched this video last night, and this morning I began sweeping and mopping my floors. I also cleaned my bathroom with the exception of the tub which I will do later. Ever since I moved away from home in 1985 I've had a housekeeper. I hate to clean, and that comes from being rebellious as a teenager. A few months ago I was approached by one of the ladies at church to either vacuum the church or clean the bathrooms. I'm not a member, and I really didn't feel obliged, but I accepted the job of bathrooms. I enjoy it! I stuck with it and a few weeks ago got a key to the church so I can go in whenever I want. I'm 72 now with arthritic hands and a stiff knee, however doing this has expanded to my own home. I'm saving $65/month by cleaning myself. And this past month I was able to save $800 from my Social Security. Yay for me!

I'm a tenant, and I move quite often. I enjoy seeing and exploring new places, but every time, I'm stressed out weeks before the move. I need to do most of it myself, and it is exhausting to pack and carry all stuff.
I gave away my old heavy sofa, and from now on, I will only buy lightweight, small furniture and only if I really need it.
It feels like my things are holding me back in this house where I don't enjoy living anymore.
It would be such a freeing feeling to make moving become easier. If it would be more like checking out of a hotel room with a few extra bags and boxes.

I had to pause life and consider just how much was on my plate. “Overwhelm” isn’t a “natural” state of being ya know. I think we just get used to it and become blind to it. Both with things to do and stuff to tend to or clean. If you really take an honest look at it, reducing both stuff and your to do list becomes a no brainer.
I think my chief motivator really was just getting rid of extra stress, overwhelm, being tired, lack of free time. So equating the stuff and the to do’s with those did the trick. It’s not just the stuff or the commitments. It’s what all comes with it that I don’t want. So ergo it had to go.

...There are also " Negatives " to all this " De- cluttering "....I'm curious as to why no one speaks on tbis..(??) NOT everyone is designed to" get rid of everything ", ....if they are surrounded by certain things that bring them Joy ,or enjoy haviing. ...I love to Read ...not getting rid of Books. I adore Antique Books as well. I am a creative woman....So i have Paints, and papers I use for that Hobby. ... ; All these Channels that tell you " To declutter and get rid of your stuff "... that back 5-10 years ago or even a few Decades ago.... no one was getting rid of their things that they enjoyed doing for Hobbies.....its saddening, really. . People had Hobbies..... they felt happy with having things around them for thier Hobbies.. ; Now... its " get rid of stuff "... I believe that the Balance has been lost , with All of This " De- Cluttering ".. it became an onslaught of Books/ RUclips Channels and TV shows... ; Yes, " Over Consumerism " is a real thing.. which to me, is different from Hobbies/ Reading Books/ and what we older ones ( back in the day ) referred to as " Puttering " . There's a lot to be said for Hobbies. For Puttering. For having things in ones Environment that they love seeing ,.. It has a bearing on the Mental and Emotional state of Well- being,...and I am not sure if thst part if the Equation ever enters into the minds of those who are telling people " to De- clutter/ Get rid of their belongings ". I can recall FAR less
" Mentsl and Emotional Issues ",less " Anxiety " in people..... because of Hobbies and just enjoying thier Life/ Surroundings....No one was constantly " De- cluttering " and didnt need to.... ; There was not a myriad of " thr latest , best Gadget / Item " to fuel over Consumerism. Who REALLY NEEDS A ROBOTIC LAWNMIWER ,. ?? THAT is what is Unnecessary... all these " Gadgets and Things " to make people lazy and veer away from the simple ways of Life.

Decluttering doesn't command me as to what to do of getting rid of stuff. It's a choice that only keep things that I NEED AND I WANT - for me getting rid of all stuff I don't need and I don't want means less cleaning & maintenance (so i can use time to other impt things to do esp for myself, family and around me), can save money by not wasting and help environment of too much rubbish, donating things to someone needed instead of keeping them wasted, more space to move around & breathe at home, etc. if u are saying hobbies/ collections , then for me despite decluttering, they can't force me to throw them away as they make me happy & benefit me so it means even they are 'wants and more than duplicates' I keep them coz they they are necessary to keep me happy, peace & sane. It's own choice

I personally think decluttering is all about getting one's possessions to a level that is below one's personal threshold... that point where your amount of "stuff" that you are keeping, is easy for you to manage. I don't believe decluttering means one has to get rid of the things that brings one joy! We just can't keep everything - our homes have limited space! (& Our brains have a finite capacity to manage our stuff). In order to truly enjoy our things, or our hobbies for example, it is best to curate a collection of the items we love and use regularly, & get rid of the things that clutter our spaces & don't serve us well, so that we have the physical & mental space to use the remaining items that bring us joy.
Whilst Decluttering may be a tool used by minimalists, one doesn't have to have "Minimalism" as an end goal to enjoy the benefits of Decluttering - I for one, will certainly never be a "minimalist" but definitely have gained plenty of personal benefits through my decluttering journey, & I suspect I will keep it up as a lifelong practice, as we continually add new things to our spaces & consequently also need to get rid of other things that wear out, or no longer serve us, at the same rate in order to just to maintain the "status-quo" 😉

      Thank you for sharing.
I love my books and my hobbies but I do have to keep a control on them as I could let them take over.
I do need to do a cull now and then and try not to let them take over as we don’t have the space.
My husband has been told he has only a few months to live so already I have started to let some things go as I don’t want to have to look after a lot of stuff when he goes. He also has let or sold items which I won’t be burdened with. Most I couldn’t use anyway.
I definitely love a clean counter at all times and especially before going to bed.

Yes, it does help in many ways. I've been decluttered for about 30 plus years. Definitely, gets rid of consumerism mentality after a short season. It helps a lot with anxiety. I don't call myself a minimalist... but simplified. Which is a continuous process.
I've never been cluttered but I think we all for the most part have to much stuff. It's exhausting! As far as anxiety one can still have it regardless of decluttering or minimalism. Things happen in this life that can bring it on, but when one has anxiety all surrounding clutter can amplify it. While having less or at least a more manageable home and life it gives one the space to process, less management on the things and more care for self and things that are healthy and important. Gives the space to process thoughts or emotions to be there for a loved one. Even the process of decluttering helps one move forward, work through anxiety, etc. We cannot control the world around us... things that happen to ourselves or loved ones. We cannot control their choices either. I've had a season well many seasons of higher than normal anxiety & recently a pretty long season with it. For me it's always been things out of my control... so learning to let go... it's a process just like decluttering. It's not 1 and done. I've been learning to sit and observe why it's here meaning the anxiety. With depression it's usually dealing with the past unprocessed emotions and with anxiety it's usually present and future. Even fear of future. Just my observation... the c-vid triggered a lot of people's anxiety. Listen to your gut anxiety is telling you something. I do not like anxiety, but I'm learning to listen to it. I can sit with it. I'm not afraid of it anymore and I do listen... it is usually something or someone I have to deal with. Maybe something or someone unhealthy for me. Also, tolerating things one shouldn't and not addressing them or the situation. Use to be fear and worry. I've learned I do not need to control anything... I do not like anxiety and I'm sorry you have some. Simplified life and home is the best! Life still happens good and bad, but really it is a huge thing off your plate when life does happen. The Plus cleaning is so easy. Maintaining is so easy. I find it esthetically pleasing as well. I wish you the best sending you some compassion. Just know there are many people out here that deal with anxiety. You are not alone. There is still plenty of love and compassion in this world. I pray it finds you! Blessings
