HxH is nonsensical in most regards. Its worldbuilding sucks, as does its power system, and most of its arcs end up being meaningless. Brotherhood is better, but it suffers from basically featuring the same villains the entire series, with most of the plot just being based around the characters simply being uninformed. Naruto, at least, doesn't try and lead you around with mysteries the entire series, like Brotherhood, and pretty much every arc means something, unlike HxH. It also has better villains. I mean, which series has Madara, again? And ignoring Madara, you still have Orochimaru, Zabuza, Nagato, Itachi, Sasuke and Gaara. All strong characters in their own right, that all have meaningful depth to their characters that, at the very least, make their actions understandable, especially given the context of the Naruto-world, which definitely has better worldbuilding than HxH, and arguably better worldbuilding than Brotherhood. The fuck does Hisoka do the entire series again? Help Gon, be a little threatening, then fuck off? That's not a good villain. Neither is reusing the Sins, especially given they lack any depth. Naruto, as a main character, fucking sucks for pre-Shippuden, though, so Gon and Ed have that going for them, at least. And pretty much every female character not named Tsunade or Konan range from shit (like pre-Shippuden Sakura), to mid/underdeveloped (i.e. Temari). Also, too much filler, but that's the anime, and not the manga. HxH has filler baked-in. Also, Barack's right. The chimera ant arc is fucking boring. I skipped it after getting 15 or so episodes in. It took far too long to tell something ultimately meaningless. All that mattered in that arc, that actually effected later arcs, was Gon fucking himself up (which literally got wished away), and Netero dying. Nothing else matters, except the introduction of the idea of the Dark Continent.
You're wrong about everything. Each setting in HxH has a purpose, the hunter exam was a battle royal with all kinds of traps and side challenges so Gon could get his hunter license. Heaven's arena introduced nen and was a way for them to get money and practice it to wrap up the subplot of Gon returning Hisoka's badge. Hisoka is intimidating and unpredictable, which makes him a good antagonist in both settings. They're led to Yorknew, a shady city area based on old New York, where they were trying to get the greed island game so Gon could figure out where his dad is, and this introduced the phantom troupe. There's several villains, Chrollo being a primary villain who doesn't competely know why he is one because he is trying to find an identity, they were incredibly dangerous and required Gon and Killua to use more tactics just to stay alive. Greed Island was like a fantasy setting brought to life, everyone sometimes wishes they could be in a videogame, it introduced new fighting mechanics and had a good murder mystery with Genthru. Then it introduced the real final boss, Razor, who offered one of the most tactical fights in shonen in the form of a dodgeball tourney. Chimera Ant was the darkest story, we saw the ants kill off characters we knew and a level of danger that affected entire populations of peope, making them menacing and scary. There are several noteworthy villains, tactical fights, and a climax that was tense and conveyed one of the most important messages in regards to humanity. HxH has no filler but the training arcs do slow down the anime, however nen as a power system is incredibly flexible and fleshed out, it's really easy to think about matchups, potential, and your own nen abilities because it's that dang good. You are definitely baiting and I took it to tell you all this.
@@Sernival I'm not even going to bother debating this. HxH is not as good as you think, and I don't care enough to go further into it. Take that opinion, or leave it, but HxH has many flaws.
@@GrammarNaziAUS I provided my argument in good faith, elaborating on why the settings matter and the villains are good, as well as leveling with you on other points. If you hadn't read my post, someone else might to get a better idea of Hunter x Hunter, since it is the best anime with a level of depth that people consider it to be lite-seinen, so I am fine with that.
@@Sernival I never said it was bad. I mostly said it was nonsensical and that the Chimera Ant Arc was boring. I've still yet to wrap my head around how Nen and whatnot actually work, despite having watched HxH twice, and done a short skim of the manga once. Same goes for the worldbuilding. Hunters make zero logical sense, neither their existence nor their ability to ignore the law are ever really explained in any detail that makes logical sense. If the Dark Continent was a consistent threat to the world of HxH, I'd understand it a bit more, but it's not. The Chimera Ants are the first actual threat that came from there (that people are aware of), and it's otherwise mostly just a curiosity, unless you're insane and think it's a genius idea to explore it. Same goes for the villains. They're mostly one-and-done. Greed Island Arc was my favourite arc, and I couldn't tell you shit about its' villain, but I could tell you plenty about Naruto's villains. Hisoka is cool, don't get me wrong, but he essentially does nothing the entire series, other than act threatening. My point is, is that as taken by themselves, the arcs are all mostly very good, but none of them actually connect very well at all. There is no through-line connecting them in turns of anything, outside the plot going in that direction, as the worldbuilding jumps all over place between them, and the characters aren't used in any consistency between arcs, unless you are called Gon or Killua. Characters are thrown away, never to be seen again, as quickly as they are introduced. As I said before, it's nonsensical, and almost certainly a result of the lack of overall plotting and direction from Togashi. Ironically, Brotherhood suffers from the inverse problem. The entire series is essentially one long arc, with the cast of characters being mostly entirely the same, with very few new introductions past 20 episodes or so, with the same villains the entire story. It makes for a compelling first viewing, given that the entire series is consistently building towards its' ending, but repeat watches/reads devalue that, as the plot's overall stagnation become more obvious, as does its' overreliance on characters simply not knowing things being all that stops them from being able to act. It's more compelling as an overall story and world, than HxH, imo, but the arcs of HxH are much better than Brotherhood's, when taken as they are, and not how they fit in overall. I only think it's better because I prefer consistency verses the nonsensical. Naruto is a balance of both, but suffers from its' own issues. 2 of the 4 main characters of pre-Shippuden are insufferable, the story, while having direction, is fairly weak, and while the characters who are given focus are very strong, any character not given focus is essentially not developed at all. The anime itself also suffers from having a shit tonne of meaningless filler and non-canon movies, but those are easily avoided by finding a canon guide, but that doesn't remove the fact that they exist. Further to that, Naruto himself uses very little variety in his abilities the entire series, and essentially never changes as a character, although that's kinda the point with Naruto.
