    If the mech stages had Gamma's physics from SA1, they would've played much better. Just search up Gamma Physics in SA2.

      @Manek Iridius You literally lose all your speed if you have to turn (even slightly) for whatever reason, you take forever to pickup speed and the jumping is so clunky. You can like the mech physics more, but I wouldn't call them better than Gamma's physics.

    • @DuskusCB
      @DuskusCB 3 года назад +20

      Gamma’s physics don’t work as well for the SA2 mech stages because they’re so much more enclosed than the more open SA1 stages. They’re DESIGNED around the slower, heavier precision of the health-bar-based SA2 stages, while Gamma in SA1 is meant to be more speed-based what with the timer you have to race against in those.

    The only problem I have with the mech stages is that If you play with a keyboard or a terrible joystick, everytime you try to do a 45 degree turn (diagonal), the mech loses all his speed, making you need to jump in every turn (which wasn't a problem when you play in a og Dreamcast or GC controller), while the objective is to lock-on on various targets at once, but when people just play for the first time they just keep mashing the B button without giving a shit with points since nowadays people just play games through "the main campaign" and then never play again, just for the sake of saying "I already played SA2", If the gameplay had a time limit just like Gamma levels, players would actually lock-on on various enemies, I don't think the physics need to be changed (maybe the jump height could be less heavy). Also if you feel the mech is too sluggish, then just JUMP when you're gonna do a more sharp turn, that helps a lot in not loosing momentum.
    Also the soundmixing in the gameplay is terrible in the ports, in the OG Dreamcast version it wasn't that loud (also the game wasn't made to be played with headphones... so don't use them pls), I think most of the flaws everyone talk about came with the ports, when I play the Dreamcast version the controls and audio feel so much better for some reason.

    • @amazaine8743
      @amazaine8743 3 года назад

      Hey, its almost like the exact same problem with SA1. Where most of the problems are because of the ports but people blame it on the original game. Honestly, this whole thing just showed me how bad SEGA is at porting games

    • @sanglish18
      @sanglish18 3 года назад

      @@amazaine8743 yep, in SADX is so much easy to fall of scripted sections and the collision is terrible (like that infamous part in Emerald Coast loop where you just fall of the floor), which is soo dumb considering they had 4 years to make a good port and ended worse and SA2B which barely had 6 months to port. People blame soo much with the sound mixing in SA2 but don't know that it was actually normal in the DC version (cutscene music was also a little less louder, but in the gameplay it was on point)

    I honestly didn’t mind the mech levels since I just felt like it was Gamma’s Levels fully realized. Now I didn’t like the treasure hunting levels as much as I did in SA1 since they nerfed the radar in that game (which thankfully has been fixed by the mod community). The only thing I found off about the mech stages was that Tails was stuck in one vs SA1 where you could fully control him but it makes sense considering he wasn’t even supposed to be playable in the first place.

  • @shyguymike

    If they made controls berable, they could be alright. Even if they are slowish, the turning and air control before hover powerup are the horrible part! Just fix that and mechs can 100% stay. Tho making shooting more inticive would be good. I would like to see them be made into a proper 3rd person shooter, just with lockon mechanic.

    • @hydrochloric007
      @hydrochloric007 3 года назад +1

      Well in SA2, theres usually alot of enemies shooting you, in your way, and if you just trudge through your gonna lose all of your health. This isn't as evident in the starting stages. Plus I feel like a time limit restricted the time a stage could take. Not to say I don't like SA1's Mech Stages, far from it, but SA2's are just a massive improvment (for me)

    • @lpfan4491
      @lpfan4491 3 года назад

      Gamma needed the timelimit because only one enemy he faces has any kind of chance at beating him. That one being Beta Mk2.
      SA2 mechs just have a lot more of an issue surviving(Not counting the additionally bad enemy-placement, because that is just poor design), so they don't need a timelimit to be challenged.

    I think the mech stages and the treasure hunting stages are over hated simply because that they're not speed stages. (The same can be compared to how the Werehog stages aren't liked because they are not boost stages.) The shooting stages have their faults like not being able to turn in movement control like Gamma's stages, but I think the stage variety, the more engaging levels, and the removal of Gamma's time limit make up for the downsides. I think the stages are great because of the level structure was well thought out rather than being mostly copy-paste from Sonic's levels like in SA1.

      That breaks the form of SA2, each team has 3 gameplay styles and each character on one team has a counter on the other team with the same gameplay style. Tails and Eggman are supposed to be rivals and if Tails was mechless that would just break the duology dynamic in the game. Not saying a mechless Tails would be a bad in future games, I'm just saying mechless Tails doesn't make sense for SA2.

    I just watched the treasure hunt video yesterday, and I have pretty similar thoughts here! I was so young when I was playing the game that I didn't really think about if the levels had a place or not; I just took what I was given. I do think that something can be said for the lower gravity stages at the end of the game--not only do they mix up the controls a bit for Tails/Eggman, which is generally good, but they also feel faster, to me. Being able to jump higher and take bigger leaps I think loosens up the game play, which is nice in the later half. Again, my issues are always going to be more individual to the stages. Eternal Engine is the only one I really dread because it is ETERNAL. So long and frustrating. I don't really have much beef otherwise--I think they're fun! I truly love how different all 3 gameplay types are

    They're not bad, but I'd much prefer to see Tails like he was in SA1 with maybe the odd mech bit thrown in here and there should the action call for it, as a means of mixing things up. Maybe 75% on foot and 25%. And before anyone says about Tails' flight being busted in SA1 as you can skip whole chunks of the stages with it, you can do exact the same thing with Sonic's busted spin dash, but yet somehow everyone praises that like its the best thing since sliced bread. Funny how that works...
    So a side from the odd mech bit here in the next game, like SA1, let Tails run (and fly) wild and free! Because, as the old saying goes: let Tails run (and fly) wild and free.

    I play the mech snd treasure hunt stages way more than the speed i love the character variation , and i like appreciating the environment going slow and blowing stuff up with lasers. This applies to sa1 too and i only replayed big the cats stages and did all the side content of him only because i liked the slow gameplay thats still exciting and has a challenge,and also like big as a character so much 🥶

    I think they are good. Some of the enemyplacement sucks, sure...but that is also the case in Sonic2 and people love that game. And being unfairly hit can lead to death easier in that game than SA2 mechs. It should be fixed, yes, but it is not "the worst thing ever".

    I think there should have been more variety in Tail's stages.
    Maybe a few mech boss fights and stages, but you also have a car stage, maybe a plane stage, maybe ONE mech-less stage with Amy tagging along, maybe a boat stage? Basically maybe Tail's thing could have been that most of his stages were different from each other.
    Maybe they could have done something similar with Rouge even if her primary thing was treasure hunting.

    Chaomix: Are the SA2 Mech Stages THAT Bad?
    My answer: Not really.
    Here's my honest opinion on them. The Mech Stages are okay. They're not as good as the Speed Stages, but they're definitely a thousand times better than the Treasure Hunting Stages, that's for sure. And I think they're still pretty decent little shooters (with the exception of Eternal Engine and maybe a little bit of Hidden Base to some extent). I do like how you get to play as Eggman though and Cosmic Wall is by far the best mech stage 'cause the music in that stage slaps so hard, it's such a banger. :)

    The thing that really gets me is that people compare the treasure hunting stages in Sa2 to knuckles stages in sa1, to point out why their not as good.
    But then they turn around and trash on the mech stages in sa2 and DONT compare them to Gamma's stages for some reason.
    That makes me so irrationally angry.

    I'd argue the kart racing was the worst part about SA2 tbh (although the designs of the karts and unlockables had their charm). Mech stages are okay, but nothing special. Gamma was more fun to control and I prefer the look of his aiming reticle. However, I love the multiplayer, chao garden, treasure hunting and speed stages.
    And yeah, definitely agree on the beeping sound being earsplitting and unpleasant, but nothing has been more ear grating to me than the Unleashed battle music.
    Great video!

    The only reason I ever resented the mech stages was that I am a huge Tails fan; I didn't think that sort of gameplay meshed with him that well as a character. Eggman? Totally. But if Tails was out of his mech and used smaller gadgets and his own body to solve the same levels (or just tweaked levels), that would be perfect, and I'd have no issues. (Well, that and tweaking controls, etc.)

    I'm mixed on the mech shootings I only liked Robotnik's levels but Tails not so much, My only problem is the laser sound and the lack of challenge. Take E-102 Gamma's level for EX, Gamma's gameplay has the player on it's toe as the clock ticks down to restore time the player has to shoot the badniks to get time bonus. If the mech shooting where to comeback it should be made for E-123 Omega and take the challenge from SA1 (such as killing Badniks gives You time bonus)

    They’re meh imo, Knuckles and Rouge are absolutely not fun to me because the stages are too big to make me want to look everywhere to find a small emerald piece and on top of that you can only track one emerald at a time but Tails and Eggman are alright. They’re slow and the beeping is loud and just overall terrible but if you turn down the volume it’s not terrible imo

    Personally, the janky controls in the mech levels aren't what bother me the most. Or even their stark dissimilarity to the speed stages.
    The worst part is the fact that Tails doesn't shut-the-hell-up throughout his levels. At least I can enjoy the music in the treasure hunting stages, because the characters are SILENT. Tails' voice acting in "SA- Heroes" is nightmare fuel.

  • @krjohnson29

    The thing about the beeps and the sound mixing is that while it wasn't great in the original, the problem is made MUCH worse on the PC version of the game because sound effects were put way louder for some reason (Thankfully you can fix that with mods).
    This is also an issue with Sonic Heroes's PC port.

    Also (or at least in my experience), because you're killing so many enemies you'll get plenty of drives and/or small animals for your Chao. E-102 didn't exactly have that luxury as, being a robot with a gun for a hand, he might accidentally shoot a Chao :(

    I honestly love the Mech stages, it's arcade levels of addicting to have the perfect scores with a lot of chains and some might say the controls are clunky, but oh boy when you get the Jet Booster the controls become so versatile
    As for Tails, yeah i do prefer him to be on his foot for future games, but for SA2'S story all stages are well set in context, breaking into a military facility, finding refugy in a city with so many troops, trying to leave flying would be imposible, etc.
