    I like the way you work smart not to hard, moving the troughs that way while getting the cows to follow was awesome

    good video ...any fence that will turn cattle is a good fence that fence looks like it will turn cattle especially you working on it ..get some hair seep ewe's and a ram I'm killing it on just five acre's I'm making 2000-3000 every six months know that I have my herd built up and its still a small herd and a ewe as long as you can get her for 50-100 bucks can pay for her self in 1-2 yrs time ..just don't buy from privet party's unless you find a good deal I get all my ewes at sale barns or raise my own ewes but I do buy my ram from privet partys or a special sale so the replacment females I sell to other farms are worth more $$$ know its getting to point were I can sell my own lambs I raise and just buy 5-10 replacement ewes every yr cheaper.. I think you should still keep doing bottle calves tho when you can as your good at it but with sheep you would have another source or income 3-8month's faster then the bottle calves so them and the calves .plus the ewes moved behind the calves would reduce your need to bush hog and save fuel $$$ plus they eat a lot more weeds then cattle .but you would still want to rotate them right behind the calves or graze them right along side the calves and just move them at same time .my sheep will fallow me any ware for grain so you won't have any problems lol .

      Thanks for the info! I have always been interested in small ruminants and have raised goats in the past. I’m considering getting some sheep or goats but I am still weighing them out. Goats bring better prices, produce more kids on average, but are a big pain to keep in. Sheep on the other hand are easier to keep in, but they normally have singles and they are bringing almost a dollar less per pound in my area. It’s gonna be a tough decision but I’m leaning more towards goats right now...

      @@FarmandHammer most katadin or dorper sheep will have two lambs except there first time or they are or should be culled ...I'm with you tho goats are higher then that were I live at least a dollar a lbs more if not way more before some the ethnic holidays both goats and sheep are very good $$$ tho if sold before the right holidays here tho sometimes goats 5-10 dollars a lbs on the hoof if the right buyers show up to are auctions that being sead top end goats are bringing 2.25 -4.00 a lbs here were bottom end or mid grade thin goats are cheaper or same price as lamb most days running 1.18-1-90 a lbs I avg good money on my sheep tho before Ramadan and easter holidays I have bought ewes in summer months when chepaer hear traditionally for 68-75 dollars each lambed them out sold lambs for 1.40-2.00 a lbs a
      And turned around and sold those same ewe's for 130-190 dollars a head before easter

      Ms karen having raised bottle babies since 86 this is my experience. Remember ever situation is different an stay away from auction barns

    watching the channels of a few different young farm boys, some that would Never do what u have been doing even when i suggested it to some, unless its tractor time many young farmers are not interested. alot of extra work with bottle calfs vs hauling a few round hay bales into a feeder.

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  5 лет назад

      I’ve noticed a lot of the younger farm channels are mostly about equipment and that seems to be what a lot of people are interested in. But I have a hard time spending money on a lot of equipment when all it does is depreciate. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy running a tractor from time to time but I’d rather spend my time with animals. Bottle calves are a lot of work and probably aren’t worth a lot of people’s time, but I enjoy it!

    Sorry to hear you may be leaving the homestead. You have to survive! Maybe work with your dad. Is there enough land for 2 to survive?? Not being personal, but I hope things work out for you.

    • @FarmandHammer

      I doubt I’ll be leaving, but I haven’t ruled it out. There isn’t enough room to have two people farming the land, but my dad is planning on retiring in the near future so eventually I will be able to rent it from him. Thanks for watching!!

      I’ll be using the milk bars in the spring, and next fall I will be trying to use these beef x heifers as nurse cows. If they won’t take more calves then I’ll use the milk bars again.

    Obviously the bigger the better but when is the best time to sell age/weight? Is there an ideal time?

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  5 лет назад

      There are a few times during the year where prices for stocker calves are best. The best time to sell is usually March and April because farmers are looking to put cheap weight on calves with spring and summer grass. The same goes for the fall, sometimes late August and September are good times to sell, but this year is a different story. Just got to play the market and hope for the best!

      I get my calves from a few local dairies. The calves are angus Holstein crosses, not straight beef. I have come across a few straight beef calves just on Craigslist when the calf is orphaned but those tend to be hard to come by.
      Yes when I was younger me and my siblings used to raise 80 Holstein calves every year, but I haven’t really had any jerseys besides one or two.
