      thats the big problem to day young people shut down there farm instead of changing thing up to move with the times, i think people look for why they should close thedoors and sell off to a develiper, thats what i like about here, all the farm land it far enough out, no develiper would ever look at the farm land, people need to stop thinking the grass is greener in the city, the city is the worst place to be, when shit hits the fan, mobs of people trying to get out, trying to get food, they will be the first to die..

      Arnold Romppai I’m not sure what kinda world your living in but with $13 milk price for someone just starting out, it doesn’t work. Doesn’t matter what you do. I started my farm 3 months after I graduated. I was 20 years old when I shut down, and even after selling what I had, I still owed $20k+ in bills. I sure as hell didn’t want to move into the city, but you have to do what is necessary sometimes.

      @@matthalvorsen8616 thats why i said change it up move with the times on the farm that came make a go. i never said 13 milk was good, but thats the usa falt all the way, you have know quota, like we do here witch keeps the farmers milk price up, it not being flooded but huge corporations, you cant buy a milk quota if you tried, unless a farm is closing and sells there's off, but your going to pay in the millions for it

    • @arnoldromppai5395
      @arnoldromppai5395 4 года назад +1

      @Steve Slade know one is poking anyone here. i think some just dont get it and are adding things in that are not said, like a lot of hay farmers had enough of low hay prices so they just changed things up and went back to row crops, but now with how dry it has been in parts of the usa, there a shortage of hay in the usa, so the hay farmers here are making a killing selling to the usa, making it hard for use to buy good hay, as its all being shipped out or we find a farmer sitting on his hay, in order to sell at a higher price to the usa later in winter and we can buy from him, if we want to pay that $195 usd a bale, when normaly its 75

    sales are crazy. you get something up to weight, thinking they will bring more per pound and they don't. I think the big buyers have a price per head in mind and they bid less per pound on heavy stock so it works out the same per head. Then, just watched a Wyoming farmers channel where he was finishing out his feeders because he found heavy weights were doing better on average.

    how does a cow lose 25-50 pounds from standing in sale for 6 hours. sorry i live in a city so i dont understand much of this but its interesting to learn and watch.

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  4 года назад +1

      A 700lb calf will have at least 15-20lbs of water in him, and when stands in the sale barn all stressed out, he will get dehydrated very quickly. Second, the calf isn't eating anything for those 6 hours but they are still defecating what they ate previously. If you would like to read more about how fast they can shrink check this article out pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Version-7421/ANSI-3257web.pdf as you will see from the article, standing in a sale barn for 6 hours will cause a minimum of 3.5% weight loss. The conditions of the haul and sale barn can change that number. Hope that helped!

    • @FarmandHammer
      @FarmandHammer  4 года назад

      Please read this article. Its amazing how quick they can lose weight. pods.dasnr.okstate.edu/docushare/dsweb/Get/Version-7421/ANSI-3257web.pdf
      If you base it off of the article, my calves (averaging 715lbs) could have easily lost 25lbs after standing in a sale barn for 6 hours and being hauled there for another hour. Stress plays a major role!

      I don’t know what sale barn you attend, but this sale barn only has water in overnight pens. If you noticed, they were very full when dropped off and when they went through the ring they looked very skinny. I would argue it is more unethical to not give them extra water before taking them to the sale barn as they would get dehydrated quickly. Whether you like it or not, that’s how cattleman do it. Buyers know it, and pay accordingly. Good Buyers can tell exactly what has been done to the calf within seconds of it walking into the ring.
