  • Putting up the ridge beam & purlins in the middle of a brutal heat wave. Will the little crane be up to the job? Trying to keep a sense of humor while working in 100 degree plus weather. We had a lot of crazy interruptions this week. Full scribe log cabin construction. Getting ready for the roof! ‪@natureartgirl‬

    Well done you two - the ridge beam and purlins being in place is a major milestone on the build. Your attention to detail is fantastic and I'm so impressed with your calculation of the angles and then the fine-adjustments in situ. It's going to be a lovely place to spend time together when it is done. The crane, despite its missing stabiliser extension has been a real god-send for you in the manoeuvring of those huge logs. All this and lovely fish tacos and fire responses. You two are becoming legendary. God bless you as you continue to make an idea become reality.

    Howdy y’all- fantastic job getting the long perlins up. That’s tricky stuff getting everything on the money, especially when working with round logs. I love what you are using for a screw jack. That’s gonna be a conversation piece. You should put a picture of that in a log home magazine. Really unique! Praying for rain and a break in the heat. Got to put on a metal roof Friday- yuck lol. Take care and God bless

      Thanks Paul! We have just put ours on this week. We split it up and did half late one evening and the rest early in the morning. Just waiting on the ridge cap. The company put us on the back burner I guess. It’s supposed to be 103 degrees here Friday! If it’s that hot there you better get up early and be super careful. That’s dangerous heat! Take care my friend! 😊

    What a massive achievement getting the ridge beam and purlins in place! With you guys it's always a combination of careful calculation and preparing each log before it's lifted together with the great teamwork between the two of you and the mechanical muscle of Puffing Billy. And a ton of patience and perspiration. But then you'll go back and check and re-check and adjust as needed. I'm in awe of your attention to detail. Even though it's a log cabin and you're working with round logs - and some with "whoppy-jaw" - you never allow "close enough" to be good enough. You take pride in your work and the cabin when it's completed will be a stunning testament to that. You continue to inspire me!

      Thanks for the awesome comment Stevan! We are definitely glad to be done with that part of the build.. it was a head scratcher 😂😂 And of course, now that we have got it up there, we think of a better way we could have done it. But it will work😊👍I hope you are able to stay cool, you are having a heat wave as well, aren’t you? 🥵😳

      @@natureartgirl - our heatwave here in London just "broke" yesterday. On Tuesday temps were over 40°c (104°f). Luckily I didn't have anything to do and I work very hard on fulfilling that commitment! It became cooler in the evening and then the much-needed rain arrived.
      I am in the process of arranging a trip to the US to stay with a friend. Whilst I'm there I will spend some time looking for land. I'll be in Columbus OH so as well as being able to look within OH I'll be close to NC, IN and KY. That should give me some choices!
      Doesn't it always happen that after you've spent days working out the best way to do something and completing it you immediately think of a better "best way"? It's all part of the learning process and, being a little older than you guys, I feel I can say we're never too old to learn.
      Thank you for continuing to inspire me!

    It is possible to figure out the post height and placement of ridge poles, purlins, all on the ground. In '85 when I built my first house I assembled all the roof structure 20 mi away from the house in a shop building, brought it to the log house and set it in place. All of the roof structure was spot on. It can be done 👍.

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  2 года назад

      Yes, you are right, it is possible. Ours was close, but our logs were not very straight. A tiny variation from where they fit side to side makes a difference in the height. When we tapped it over even a quarter inch it made a difference. First time for this and still figuring it out😂👍

    Great to see how the roof is coming together. Was putting the Purlins up more intensive than scribing and cutting the notches ?. Will you fit the door and window sills before everything is bolted down , or will you fit in place. Sorry I’m no
    Builder but curious of how things go together.

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  2 года назад

      Yes, there are many different methods of putting on the roof. But this way took a lot of figuring. Positioning it was tough too. We were trying to get it very close so we would have less trim work later. We will put the roof on before the windows and doors, but you could do it earlier too. More than one way to do it😊👍

    This is a super nice cabin, wow, you guys are good. I just realized that I forgot to subscribe ... Serafin is French ? are you ancestors French Canadian ?

      Family name was originally Serafini it is Italian. When they immigrated to America people did not want to hire Italians cause they were too much trouble 😁😂So they dropped the i on the end🤣great grandparents actually lived in Sweden I think.

      @@natureartgirl Hi Lance, interesting story ! Italians can argue for ever, it can be funny at times, I worked 7 years with an Italian, we fought sometimes but we are still friends, they are very loyal and like to help others🙂

      We are in Arkansas, but this is hotter than normal. We usually only have a few scattered days of triple digits. This has been several weeks almost every day. But I guess that is happening all around the world😬

    I have watched every video and I don't understand why didn't lay your floor it seems to me that it will be hard to get a fit between flooring and wall logs

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  2 года назад

      We were using green logs at that point and wanted to be sure they had time to dry. Also we wanted to make sure none of them warped before we put flooring down. We can check them and plane off any high spots. Also at the price plywood is right now we did not want it to get ruined by sitting out in the weather for months. We left room under the edge of the logs to accommodate the plywood and flooring. 😊👍

      Yes, for sure. It needs a good tune up. We have been abusing it pretty bad. Should have taken time to work on it but trying to get the roof on while we have a dry spell. 😊🤣

    • @natureartgirl
      @natureartgirl  2 года назад +1

      We have a home already that is within walking distance. We built it 35 years ago. Not a log cabin though, just log siding. You can see it in some of our other videos. We are planning to use the cabin for a nightly vacation rental…Airbnb. We need some retirement income.😂We are definitely going to stay in it some ourselves and maybe live there permanently when we get older. We have grown very attached to it😊

      I’m not sure. One of the medics knew the guy and he may have been getting some information for his wife. He was stable, just needed more care than was available here.
