I am pretty conservative, but also a software dev. This thing immediately raised red flags, glad I found your channel! You are ACTUALLY trying to solve this problem and I appreciate it.
I’m glad to see that some conservatives actually see the red flags. I thought this was a joke when my left wing videos started talking about it…but then I saw the adverts 😬
@闘将ダイモス no, it just means that theyre tech savvy
@闘将ダイモス oooooooh im just dumb
@@Momo_8k You have "left-wing" videos? 😕
great video bro... you have touched a nerve here with 100,000,000+ Americans. massive market (privacy) which is a multi-billion opp ready for disruption. would love to see you carry this theme to EVERY single aspect of tech.... from hardware/software/OS/apps/IoT etc etc
Wow! I'm so glad I'm a conservative conservative! Lol! I almost bought that Freedom Phone, but luckily I wanted to research it first! Thank you so much for your tutorial here! You saved me big time! I'm sharing this video with my friends! Thanks Pizza Loving Nerd Guy!♡☆♡
Very interesting and informative. Been looking to degoogle my life and you've given me some great ideas. Thanks, you're a champ.
I've been using my OnePlus 8T for about 6 months now with Lineage for microG which is a LineageOS distribution which ships with microG pre-installed. It suits all my needs, and I even like it better than the stock ROM.
Isn’t it just a cheap Chinese phone rebranded as the freedom phone also isn’t it a fraction of the price where its originally sold?
@Peter they charge 400 extra dollars for convenience thats just a scam nobody else charges that crap
1. They aren't developing real software. Now that more people have it, we know it is just Lineage OS with a rebranded Aurora Store and apps preinstalled.
2. Real companies like Volla, iode, and /e/ are able to make actual OSes with improvements and upcharge less for their hardware. Volla upcharges by about $300 Euros which is still a lot, but iode and /e/ upcharge barely anything and still make profit.
@Peter competition what competition can be gained from this its litterly worse then the other options in every single way possible
@Peter the other options have zero effort from a customer as well tho?
@Peter also marketing doesn't really matter when the product there selling they a. Lied about whats on it and b. Completely trash anyway
If I ever start a business, my number one rule will be to not have any politics in it whatsoever, even if I agree with it. I even try not to support brands that go into politics I agree with.
@1000YRD PROBLEMSOLVER Every one on every side will have different poltical views on one thing or another. Its just a way to divide us.
You dont need to justify yourself to any of these quacks partner...I am nowhere near conservative or left but I do appreciate the views of someone that knows what the heck they are talking so you keep doing your thing...I wouldnt use a freedom phone even if you gave it to me....thats some damn good research you did on this good job
"Quacks"? 😕
Thanks for the video. It’s funny to me at least how my political views really haven’t changed over the years. I was once considered a “liberal”. Then the label changed to “libertarian”. Now, I’m called a “conservative”. Each time, a label is tagged on me by others, simply because I dare think differently. In reality, no one defines me, but me. I believe in personal freedom AND personal responsibility. I’m okay with anyone doing anything, just as long as they don’t hurt anyone else doing it.
With that said I dismissed the “freedom phone” outright. I gave it a second look and rethink seeing the leftist lose it putting it down. I have NEVER been one to be persuaded or convinced or converted by being mocked, insulted or belittled. Both sides tend to do so, but the left seem especially vicious, if you don’t agree with them (and you aren’t to the left of Chairman Mao).
I’m planning to do away with my iPhone. Contact tracing and privacy are concerns for me. I appreciate the information you’ve shared. You’ve earned me subbing to your channel, thanks again.
Great video. I haven't done phone reflashing in 20 years. This will be fun and I will be attempting to install lineage OS on a new s9plus. and then flash it with microG as well. I just hate all the bloatware and tracking
Thanks for the video and for the advice. It got me thinking and looking as I am about to buy a new phone with a budget of around £150 which is not much. I was looking at a Moto G9 and then installing LineageOS on it. But I went looking after I saw your video and found eSolutions and a Murena GS290 which is about the right price. Any thoughts on the OS and the phone please?
Great video
how do we get a volla phone. I can't find where to buy it for here in the US. I also tried to get the eSolutions phone but it's of course sold out. Any other options before our time runs out? Love your videos btw it's very good content
Thank you so much for this. I was just going to purchase one and now I need to look into these other things. I work in the gig economy. Are any of these OS's going to interfere with the apps like doordash, instacart etc.? I know they all use google maps and location services cause THEY need to track me... I just don't know if I can have my cake and eat it too? Thanks so much!
Can you recommend a phone on par with the Teracube 2e that is Verizon compatible? Do you discuss this in one of your other vids? Teracube sold out and I would wait but not Verizon compatible which is the only carrier available in the rural area where I live.
Unfortunately Verizon is a CDMA carrier which a lot of budget phones don't support. Your best bet is buying something like a Google Pixel 2 or a OnePlus 6 and flashing Lineage OS or /e/OS on it yourself.
It show no specs on the website
Freedom yet they hide the source code?, I agree with all you said .
Proprietary source code is more or less a staple of any company which is primarily profit-driven. It doesn't necessarily mean they're spying on their customers; but that's definitely part of the rationale of 'big tech' for all their patents and DRM.
@@nostalkingzone Of course.
aurora droid has a more modern ui as f-droid and pulls from the same mirrors and there is the aurora store which pulls from google plays mirrors
I've tried Aurora Droid before but it crashes far too much.
Really appreciate this video. Very helpful to have someone walk through their website who doesn't just hate it because it's "right wing."
What about GrapheneOS?
how do I de google a brand new s9 plus.? I just want an android phone without google.
Does Lineage sell phones installed w/their software
No
Why not recommending CalyxOS? instead of the shitty outdated eOS
wow crazy
Take a look at calyxos vs grapheneos
How about eOS vs Lineage OS?
eOS is based on Lineage OS so it has all of it's features. On top of that, eOS has a more iOS like layout, and an alternative to iCloud/Drive and Gmail.
@@PizzaLovingNerd wow great info thanks! Now I'm sure that I'll buy eOS phone
Make sure to check if it works on your carrier first.
@@PizzaLovingNerd For what it is worth, /e/ is still on Android 9 whereas Lineage is on Android 10 (maybe 11?) so in theory LOS is much better protected because it is on a newer version of Android.
I thought the Volla Phone works on North American networks?
I hate Grub. I'm going to Efistub.
I love how the specs have been up on their site now for several days, clearly showing that it's not the Umidigi A9 Pro, yet every tech youtuber has no integrity about retracting their claims. I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure there's a strong case to be made for Defamation law suit. In fact, if the founder doesn't do something about this soon, this company will go under.
The specs on the website are actually worse than the Umidigi A9 Pro. The Helio P60 in the Umidigi A9 Pro has 8-cores at 2.0Ghz while the Freedom Phone has a 8 core 1.8Ghz CPU (and doesn't list the SOC), and the screen resolution of the Freedom Phone is smaller. Other than the SoC, the rest of the specs are still almost identical to the Umidigi A9 Pro.
@@PizzaLovingNerd What is SoC, if I may ask? :)
Part of the problem is that a lot of us who are interested in the Freedom phone are not technically-inclined (nor have tech-savvy family or friends who can help); and therefore we feel like fish out of water on this. :( I've been wanting to get away from Google for /years/; but I know the phones have to be unlocked and rooted in order to install a different operating system; and it's easy to brick your device if you're not experienced and absolutely sure of what you're doing. :(
I probably haven't used a quarter of the 'convenience' features available on my smartphones, because of privacy concerns, avoiding "cloud" services, "backup & sync," biometrics, location services and etc. I realize that the specs on the Freedom/Umdigi phone might not seem very impressive to those who are used to using the latest thing; but it would still be a worthwhile upgrade for me--just not for five hundred dollars.
I also just wanted to express my appreciation for your taking the time to present your review, PizzaLovingNerd. I don't sense that you are leftist or being mocking of those the mainstream would consider "right-wing" (like the responder below derisively referring to us as "Trumplicans," grrr). I wasn't even really that interested in Parler per se (as I'd heard they'd sold out after their new management took over); but it was the idea of being able to keep my camera pictures, texts, emails and other account information private without being forced to allow 'big brother' access to everything. Like a previous poster, I live in a rural area and so we're limited to CDMA through Verizon, as GSM carrier coverage is extremely spotty... What would you recommend?
1. An SoC is a System on a chip, sorry it's basically a bunch of computer components all on one chip.
2. The freedom phone and all the other hardware options I shared probably do not support CDMA carriers, so a software option is the best. While a software option like the ones I showed off are the best option, like you said they do need more technical knowledge to do. Maybe if you know anyone technical in your area you could try to ask them about it.
Also the likelyhood of a non-repairable brick from a custom ROM is very unlikely. While it is possible, it's very rare.
@@PizzaLovingNerd I've been noticing a lot of posts here on RUclips lately have been truncated... Are they censoring us? 😕
I've notice this too, I cannot tell you how many times I've seen a notification for a comment and than it disappears.
Do you still have the same recommendations these days?
Yes
So instead of recommending Freedom phone your giving advice to buy hard to get phones from Europe. I like most people who watch this live in America so seems a bit odd. Why not recommend someone selling a phone with lineage already preinstalled by someone else? Too risky?
There aren't any companies in America that I know of that sell phones with Lineage, you would have to buy from eBay with is more risky. Alsp Lineage OS is an OS you have to install yourself, and Lineage themselves doesn't sell phones. But the e.foundation has a phone you can buy with /e/OS
@@PizzaLovingNerd Thanks. There is a RUclipsr Rob Braxmen selling some so I thought maybe there was many others doing the same. I'm thinking I'll order a OnePlus and try to install it myself.
@@BlkInc1 *Braxman. Rob Braxman.
I don't know about the phones being "hard to get," but the last I checked, they're only GSM-compatible. I would need something with CDMA; as Verizon has the only towers in my local area that provide decent coverage, including at my home. That doesn't leave many options. :(
Can you start calling it de-google-fied.
The official term for this is "de-googl-ed"
@@PizzaLovingNerd Ah, I still like mine better but thanks!
I agree… refurbished phones from /e/ fondation is probably the easiest option!

"Das Grifter Phone "
Man let the Trumplicans waste their money.
Right-wing phone? LOL. Technology has nothing to do with politics, in fact most of the people who are interested in open source are straight men with conservative ideas.
im sorry, but when it says "Some of the most popular banned and unbanned conservative sites and apps. preloaded directly on your phone.", i dont see any way that this phone is not political. To be clear, this is ok, if someone really wants a phone like this.
@@dernervigetypausdernachbar2307 Completely agree with you. My point is that it is absurd that someone wants to create a device based on political issues. open source is for everyone, both right and left people use this kind of technology. A lot of people who devised and created the open source movement are more to the right than anything else.
@@deusexeugenics Open source, more specifically FOSS is a topic that came right out of hacker culture which has a long history of being left-libertarian to full blown left-anarchist.
This whole idea that nobody should own software, anybody should be able to modify, use, and distribute existing software at no cost is exactly against conservative ideas.
@@JW20236 Doesn't say anywhere in that comment that conservatives are against FOSS. It does say where the idea originated from, and it just so happened to be hackers who were massive leftists and had a communistic view on software. Try to read more carefully next time.
No conservative on the planet will ever agree to the idea of FOSS being forced onto the entire software industry, that does not mean they aren't okay with people choosing to make their software free and open source by choice.
@@JW20236 I mean conservative as in one of the sides of capitalism (conservative/liberal). Conservatives are against the communistic principles from where FOSS originated from. Liberals are against those principles as well.
It's just the same old "property rights" argument that communists always have with conservatives, liberals, and even socialists. They probably have no problem with public parks, well I'd assume most of them don't.
The whole reason why FOSS came into existence was because software developers early on were very altruistic about software and computers, software was a tool that would benefit the world like no other. A lot of them soured over the years when computer software started becoming profitized by companies, which is when hacker culture started developing alternatives available to everyone (Linux). After that hacker culture slowly embraced actual hacking (like the modern term indicates) usually for activism. And well today hackers are usually security experts, crooks, or government agents.
However the impacts of traditional hacker culture are still felt today with GitHub being a center for a ton of open source code as well as the idea of open source being used as the basis for internet resources, i.e. Wikipedia for free access to knowledge.
