I heard on “A Small Wardrobe,” style is about expressing your style now. It is okay to let go of style moods or vibes you had 5, 10, or 15 years ago. Don’t feel obligated to present the same identity. You know, this also means forgiving myself for purchases that I didn’t get a lot of use out of. Saying good buy also means saying hello to the authentic you.
This is such a good way to look at it. Like our identities are ever changing and it’s fine for our wardrobes to reflect this. Explains why I’ve been inclined to get rid of stuff recently while I go through a shift.
This is something I have to keep in mind, especially when I know it’s time to let something go, but I feel bad because it’s something I used to love and wear a lot. I have to remind myself that even if I still like it, if I’m always choosing something else over that item, I’m not obligated to hang on to it.
"would i buy this again" is a good way to sort the maybes. sometimes i put it in this frame of mind: everything gets ruined in a fire, what do you replace? this is also a good way to whittle down sentimentals; what do you take with you as your home is burning down? extreme, but helpful.
Oh, thanks I'm not the only one thinking like that. I'm keeping sentimental things in a box that I could easily take with me, and when declutering clothes, papers, decorations, things aroung me, I always ask myself whether it would be worth saving when fire. It's extreme. But sometimes it truly helps.
My main two rules for myself are; - If I haven´t worn it in a year or struggle to style it within that timeframe, it needs to go. It wasn´t meant for my closet. - Don´t hang on to clothes that are uncomfortable, whetever due to weight gain/loss or a type of fabrics that don´t vibe with me anymore and if I can´t sit through a dinner or workday, it also needs to go. I´m in my late twenties, I don´t suffer for the sake of fashuuuun anymore lol
It’s crazy how emotionally attached to something I can be when it’s time to declutter; yet, in reality, I actually don’t care about the item. Such are the dualities! 🤪
Christina, I have been a subscriber for a few years now and I just wanted to say how much your content has improved over the years. You seem much more relaxed and happier over the past few months and it reflects directly on how you present your material. Well done young lady! xo
What helped me not get so overwhelmed while decluttering is make a checklist. I would do it multiple times, even on just a random scratch paper. And of course, section them into smaller "groups" so they don't look like one huge task. Like for my clothes, I separated the decluttering into four sessions-- home clothes, work clothes, casual going out clothes, and clothes I had in storage for ages. I don't have much spare time so this really helped me.
What pisses me off about minimalism is that once I get rid of something, I end up wanting to wear it again a few months or a year later because my tastes constantly change. What's working for me is that I put it in storage and come back to it when I want to wear it years later and it's like new again
I begin to see that decluttering is more like keeping up with the dishes. If you wash/declutter as you go, it won't build up again. Life. So much maintenance! 😆
Decluttering, I found clothes from my grandma. Beautiful fabric but old designs. I thought about donating it to a theather. And so I found out that on was burnt less than a month ago. I gave the stuff to them. They were very grateful and I was glad I found a nice destiny to those things. :)
I think your comment on the money already being spent really resonated with me. I've been doing the capsule wardrobe thing for a few years now, and am slowly downsizing my collection of clothing. Telling myself that the money has already been spent is so helpful for me to let go of certain items that I've bought that I just haven't been wearing. Some of those items definitely have resale value. Thanks for the tips for reselling as my favorite consignment shop retired during Covid and now I can try other options.
Important topic!!! And I love how the video is made with "talking head" (documentary term) narrating throughout we see often to keep a steady conversation feel, but most of the time we are watching interesting, well-done, relevant footage. Not just stock footage but actual footage from you doing the relevant tasks. I found that really helped hold my attention and illustrates the points without being overly stimulating. Oh and I don't know the term but the words on the screen to help mark the steps as an outline. I like those too. A cute TV clip here and there for fun.
My favorite tip for tidying up is to grab/do something anytime you leave the room in your home. Going into the kitchen? Grab the dirty coffee mug and put it in the dishwasher. Going into the bedroom? Grab your sweatshirt that’s been draped over the couch and hang it up. Leaving? Grab the recyclables.
My tip for scheduling time to declutter is to make a playlist and listen to it while working. Either with music, podcasts, even language learning, make a playlist that matches your scheduled time. Put it on and just work until it's over 😊 Language learning is my go-to because it leads my focus off the decluttering process and towards learning something else. That way, I'm more likely to get rid of things rather than sit there and stew in my emotions over it lol
One of the best ways I’ve found to declutter is an hour every few days or once a week i grab a box and tackle a space that’s giving me anxiety looking at. Once that box is full I immediately post on marketplace for free and it’s usually gone within 24 hours. It’s definitely helped to keep my space cleared out.
Thanks, Christina! Going through clothes to declutter/downsize while listening "watching with my ears". 😊❤ I start in one space, like now...in my husband's & my bedroom closet. I am working for a bit over an hour pulling items out, either I know don't fit or to try on for "hell yes or hell no". I have a plastic bin sitting here for the "hell no's" to put into a donation bag. 😊❤
Such a timely video.. I’ve working on declutttering decades of old and unworn wardrobe. I held on to those for nostalgia purposes but, it just got to a point where it’s just taking space so I’ve gotten rid of boxes and upon boxes of just clothes. Omg.. it such a relief 😅. I’m working my to the entire house slowly but surely.
One of my biggest tips is to not let my fantasy me get in the way of real me. I love comfort and consistency in my wardrobe. I have a relatively tight color palette for myself and I stick to that. I like neutrals but no light colors (white for example) I just know I simply cannot keep up with it. I go for what I call edgy simplicity in my wardrobe. No need for anything crazy I hate having to think about my outfit too hard.
Great discussion Christina! Asking if an item brings joy and value to my life is my go-to simplifying question. When it is a no, giving the item gratitude and documenting what the item taught me is helpful for moving forward.
Another inspirational video. I am now looking around my room to see if there are anymore things to declutter. Ever since I started my decluttering journey, I have been doing it religiously and it has become a second nature to me. It's much more easier to let go of the things that I no longer wear, need or want anymore. Decluttering has seriously changed my life and me as a person. N I thank you for being a part of it, Christina. Love you ❤️
Get a buddy! If you feel super overwhelmed by a daunting mess ask a friend, roommate or family member to come over and keep you company while you declutter. Before they arrive pull out some snacks and some beverages for you two. That friend can DJ some good music and even help you decide to keep or toss. Sometimes just having another person with you is what you need to get started and keep going.
I set aside half the day today to go through and declutter things that are “expired style” for me. Things that were my style that are not now and I am giving myself space to let go of and except that they served their function well in the time I had them! I was just going through my baby pile when you brought that point up! I’ve had it sitting there for quite some time now and I’m finally going through to either keep items or discard them. Perfect timing! I love your content in this background was perfect for the mood and topic!
I would add one thing and that is to make sure your items get decluttered in the most responsible way. Donate to shelter or small community thrift stores rather than large chain thrift stores who might ship the unsold stuff overseas
I always declutter my bathroom and kitchen first because these are the two areas that I'm least attached to the items. Clothing, bags & books are my hardest areas so I try to make a fun night out of it. Snacks, a drunk and music (no TV because then I procrastinate). I've been saving clothes for when I lose weight but I think it's time to say goodbye 😭 this video remotivated me
I always try to do a deep clean in the beginning of the year but it’s usually so much to do that it’s overwhelming so this is perfect timing. Thank you! ☺️❤️❤️
I just picked up Marie Kondo book because I’m late per usual. Seems her big thing is to take all the stuff and lay it out and the emotional trauma from the process along with the actual physical work will be enough to deter one from recluttering. I’m trying to decide if that’s the approach I want to take because I’d almost take a punch square in my junk from a prime era Mike Tyson in order not to do such things.
Take advantage of her recommendation to tidy clothes by categories, if needed! I personally like the method of piling everything on the bed (rather than the floor, as she recommends), and that’s even as someone who becomes overwhelmed. This is my second time “tidying” using her method, and this second round is easier because most of the clothes are hand-me-downs that I only accepted due to weight gain and not wanting to spend money on clothes. If it hadn’t been for the weight gain, or even if I had been willing to invest time and money into finding even just a few new items that I loved, I wouldn’t be tidying clothes again.
So many good tips in one video! I'm already on my way to the more simplified lifestyle, but there are still things like "what if I need this clothing item or makeup for work one day?" (in film industry you never know what you might need) - and that makes it harder. I also love my art supplies! The rest is easy to declutter, but these - expensive - things are not. And I tend to save the best for special occasions, for special shoots, events etc, horrible mindset, I know, and I'm fighting it :) Thank you for the video!
Loved this. Thanks. My daughter and I are preparing to spend the next 24 hours decluttering. I'm a bit of a veteran (but it's still not easy), but she's gonna need help. I think I'll make a print out of "If it's not a Hell yes, it's a No!!"

loved this. Would love a video on how to create a curated wardrobe for people who have a small wardrobe but feel like nothing in it works for them 😫 like I can’t “shop my closet” bc There’s so little and it’s all mostly not “ me” but I can’t buy everything all at once so I’m trying to be very strategic when adding pieces.
You mean I'm not the only one? I decluttered my closet and used the does this spark joy question. I had to stop because if I got rid of any more I'd have to go naked!
Depending on why you don’t like your clothes, you can fix this problem. For example, if you don’t like the color, you can dye it another color. I have been doing that with hand me downs lately. You can also get clothes altered to fit more to your liking. I had fabric added to the top of a romper to make it longer and shortened an awkwardly ruffled minidress to make it a shirt. It won’t solve every problem, but it could help.
I personally don't have a spending envelope in my budget for this reason. If I really need something I have to actually budget for it. This way clutter stays outside my house. So wasteful to just buy stuff instead of experiences. Great video 👍
I send my clothes to ThreadUp to get a little money back from my clothes and it is zero effort! You do NOT get much money back, but I just remember that it's more than I'd get if I just donate it to Goodwill. And they'll send the rest of your clothes to donation if they don't sell.
Hello. Happy Birthday, fellow Aquarian! (i think?) I'm pretty sure you have or have had a birthday in the past week or so. No, I'm not stalking, just took note that our birthdays are close in date. Mine is Feb 7th. You said it in a video a while back. Anyway, I love your videos and look forward to them every Sunday while drinking my first cup of coffee. Keep it up you weird quirky Aquarian. And yes, I too take that as a compliment. :)
I regret some of the stuff I throw but if I didn’t i will regret not having a decluttered life for the rest of my life. There’s no perfect way, you have to choose…have all stuff you might need of let it go and have stuff you really need.
Me too! I'll never get rid of mine. I am film nerd so have lots of classic films that aren't being streamed by Netflix, Prime, etc. So I can't get rid of my DVDs or DVD player.
Sigh...I had a Virgo friend who was the queen of organizing and she would come over and organize my apartment while we gossiped but she got married and had kids...and lost the need to organize!😄😄
@@Christinamychas 😂😂 Well, my best friend is Aquarius and she is super organized and since you are pharmacist (?), that is job you have to be organized. I'm Leo...and we like people to organize our stuff.😂😂
Now it is 25 lb loss, thank you carnivore diet. And I remember a tote of winter clothes in storage. Can't wait to get them down. And the bag of riding britches that hadn't made it to 4H yet are going to get edited!

Lollllllll I do like the Kondo method - just make sure you have snacks 😂

my biggest issue right now for some reason is decluttering any of my Eddie Bauer clothes. But I don’t really wear most of the pieces anymore so idk why I’m struggling to get rid of them 😭 like I know they need to go but I’m treating them like my stuffed animals omg.
I feel I'm hearing that you have a sense of class attached to your EB clothes so maybe you fear feeling of lesser class without them? Maybe it's the nostalgia of reaching that level of income and feeling less stressed about money or fitting in through your fashion choices? Maybe as a start, let go of the majority and hold on to 1-3 pieces that seem to have the most emotional attachment? It's okay to hold on to some things if they are truly of some kind of value to you (even if only emotionally) but also getting to the root of the why it holds so much vlaue can be the value of the item itself. 😉

Hello Christina🌼, comment allez vous? Big thank you for the tips 😘😊
I’ve been looking for a staple pair of jeans and love the ones you’re wearing, where are they from?
The ripped ones are the Agolde mid rise 90s jeans! Size down!
I love this! Where did you get your bed frame from?
IKEA!
I send my clothes to ThreadUp to get a little money back from my clothes and it is zero effort! You do NOT get much money back, but I just remember that it's more than I'd get if I just donate it to Goodwill. And they'll send the rest of your clothes to donation if they don't sell.
That is one of my all time favorite Simpsons clips. Well done!
Great episode 😂
I actually looove that boots of yours! 😍
Great information
Excellent video! I gave it a like. 😃👍
this video was the nudge I needed to get rid of these few items that I clung to for far too long. not sure if you or Homer Simpson made me do it..
I luv your simpons references
What are the plastic totes that fit so perfectly under your bed from? Size and brand please if you know.
They’re super old! I think they’re from Walmart! The brand says Omnibox 50L 37x15x6” size!
Thanks!
Great video - also loved the "Brain" reference😂
Notifications squad are right here🤚🏻
😭😭😭 appreciate you! 🥰🥰
I regret some of the stuff I throw but if I didn’t i will regret not having a decluttered life for the rest of my life. There’s no perfect way, you have to choose…have all stuff you might need of let it go and have stuff you really need.
I can’t wait for spring so I can have a garage sale
I see your plaid blazer is back in the closet plus another😄😉❤️
Haha yes I kept it 😁
One thing that stood out for me with the athletic greens was the bubble gum smell haha. Definitely can't taste it though.
Omg you’re right! Haha I like it tho
Thanks gorgeous x
Loved it
Looking beautiful
I still have a DVD player 😂
Vintage! Haha
I’m an Aquarius - does that change things? 😂😅
@@Christinamychas 😂😂 Well, my best friend is Aquarius and she is super organized and since you are pharmacist (?), that is job you have to be organized. I'm Leo...and we like people to organize our stuff.😂😂
If it is not a "hell, yes!", it is a no.
Just got rid of all my basics.
Decluttering clothes is the easiest thing I did. The hardest one is get rid of sentimental items. I'm still struggling until now :(
No pressure ❤️
Didn’t know you were a Simpsons fan too! What episode are these clips from ? 🥺
The episode where Bart gets Stampy the elephant!
@@Christinamychas you’re a star! ⭐️ Heading to watch that one now 🙌
the simpsons clip is essential 👌🏻👏🏻❤️😂
less ego,less materials
If it's not a "Hell yes"! Lol! 😆
Hi from Danmark 🌎🌻
Hope you give your clothes and shoes to homeless or others with less money too ❤❤🌈
Love your faces! Jajaja
Great tips! You can start with those ripped jeans! 😃
Ha! I said they were the exception 😂
Ummm those maybe booties are super cute!
I got rid of a ton of nice clothes. Then guess what. I DID lose the 20 pounds and wish I wasn't buying clothes again. Wish I had stored them.
Now it is 25 lb loss, thank you carnivore diet. And I remember a tote of winter clothes in storage. Can't wait to get them down. And the bag of riding britches that hadn't made it to 4H yet are going to get edited!
If it’s not a hell yes it’s a hell no!!😂😂🤷♀️
You look beautiful
Be nice with people with dvd player. Streaming quality sucks. Long live the bluray !
Lol do you! ✨
Wonderful ideas! Thanks!
