    B. imbellis is most abundantly found in Malaysia, next door to tiny Singapore which is where I live. And I've collected them in lowland swamps where they hide amidst thick submerged grasses & leaf litter, most often in ankle-deep waters. All I can say is that these fish are happiest in warm, *dimly-lit* tanks with no turbulence that are chock-full of live moina & mosquito larvae.
    They don't need fancy, branded feeds. And are pretty undemanding fish. Seriously, with the more undemanding species e.g. B. imbellis, B. splendens, etc, to not overdo it is the key to their successful husbandry. And yet, it is ironic when betta zealots proclaim anything less than an overfiltered 5 gallon aquarium as "animal cruelty."
    People who do not live with these fish preaching to people like me who actually do that I am "ignorant about betta husbandry!" Dude, I come from this side of the world where bettas are akin to minnows. Trust me, folks. Many of you are overdoing it simply because you are sold on fancy mainstream aquaristic "trends" instead of actually understanding your fish in the flesh.

      I could be wrong, but I think I heard once
      Horizontal Stripes-> Breeding

      Or was it the other way around? Sorry I can't look it up right now

    • @madaline5156
      @madaline5156 5 лет назад

      Sannieee horizontal stripes, are stress stripes, but vertical stripes like ones the female shows are ‘breeding stripes’ which means she’s interested in breeding.

    Hello!! Just recently found your channel, and this video I specifically looked for as in a few months I would like to buy a betta from frank's bettas.
    I am not new to Betta keeping, I have had many domestic bettas before, but all came from a very poor line that is local here, and therefore even with all the possible precautions, most ended up getting sick even though the their conditions were best... My aquarium keeping skills have since then improved, as I was in my early-teens when I had my older bettas.
    I am now moving out this very month, and am planning on getting myself a heavily-planted, very natural looking tannins-filled aquarium (Debating between a 10 and 20 gallon.)
    And I wanted to know your (and everyone else's) opinion on this: Should i get an imbellis male, or a green alien male from Frank's bettas? I've heard recently that the alien's tend on being more sickly, but i wasn't able to find any other information on this, and so I turn here to you, a betta keeper and experienced breeder for advice.
    If you see this, first of all thank you very much, and second of all, is there a place I could contact you to ask for more informations on this matter? I want to trully give my first fancy high qualiy betta the best possible home!

      I have read lots of good things about Koo Yang being very reliable. I actually had Ben from Bens Bettas add my fish to his import shipment so he arranged everything and I didn't have to contact a transhipper as he did all that for me. If you want to be 100% sure on who to use, there is a post on the betta breeders united fb page where ppl talk about their experiences with different transhippers and who they recomend.
      I hope this helps a bit! 😊

    I'm curious, does breeding wild into your domestic lines help in any way? Does it cut back on health issues or make them more hardy? Or is the opposite true? Or does it all just depend?

    • @CreativePetKeeping
      @CreativePetKeeping  5 лет назад +1

      I think that breeding back to wild betta splendens might help strengthen the line. If I breed to imbellis, I would be hybridizing..which is not necessarily bad..but from what I've read ..its more tricky to pull off. Some people in the hobby are very against hybrids...but I think they are ok.

    • @elfiefromangelcity6142
      @elfiefromangelcity6142 5 лет назад +1

      @@CreativePetKeeping Hyrbrids are a controversial issue across the whole spectrum. Talk to any animal person, and they've got an opinion on it. Are there wild Splendens? I was doing some reading yesterday, and it seems you can breed splendens with at least two other wild species. Now I'm wondering if Splendens have a wild counterpart, or if they've been domesticated so long nobody knows anymore. I want to get into betta breeding at some point, but I have so much to prepare for to do it right. So I still haven't done it.

      My shipping was much cheaper then normal because my fish got added on to a big import order that Bens Bettas did for Aquashella. If you e-mail or msg Frank, he can help you figure out the costs and if you find someone to import with you, you can split shipping costs to save some money.

    Have you thought about using those DIY sponge filters Life with pets made for your one gallon tanks? I use those in mine when I'm transitioning a new betta from those tiny cups before they go into a larger tank. I find it less stressful on the fish that way. (I use a one gallon jar for a few weeks with one of those DIY filters with a heater, then a two gallon bowl with one of those DIY filters (a half pint jelly jar or a glass oui yogurt jar) and a heater with a twice weekly water change of 60%.)

    Something I think is amazing is South America has Bettas growing in the wild. When I found a RUclips video of someone collecting these bettas, I did a Google search and found that there are indeed Bettas growing in the wilds of South America, however they were introduced to the wild there and doing very well. So I suspect Florida with its vast Everglades probably has them too, but I wasn't able to conform that.
    I love Bettas and think that they should be everywhere when the habitat is favorable. They're one species that wouldn't be evasive or harm anything but mosquitoes, and who likes mosquitoes anyway?

    • @CreativePetKeeping
      @CreativePetKeeping  5 лет назад

      I worry about invasive species because sometimes it works out..but more often it harms the ecosystem in some way. I will have to look up the video, its am interesting topic and I would like to learn more.

    • @parrotbill9072
      @parrotbill9072 5 лет назад

      @@CreativePetKeeping This is one that would not harm the ecosystem, believe me. Coming from a family of biologist and ornithologist, living in the land of evasive species of Florida. Where the iguanas, pythons, water hyacinths, lion fish and monitor lizards, Bettas would not offer a problem. For a evasive species to take over, it cannot have a natural enemy that would keep it in check. Bettas are not fast enough to out swim all the predictor fish in the state, starting with bass and bluegill if it straid out of its natural habitat of grassy shore lines. Just about everything that sees it would eat it down to the 4 inch Giant Water Bugs we have. As long as they would stick to natural habitat with heavy cover they would never run out of mosquitoes.
      Not to advocate turning any Bettas loose, but it seems Florida has every evasive species there is from hurricanes crushing home and turning really harmful species loose, this one that would not pose a problem. We even have Cobra Snakes living in the Everglades which is not one I would want to run into.

      I do! But only within the USA and since I don't breed often the fish are not available often either. When I do, I make an update video on my channel letting everyone know I have fish for sale.

      Okay cool...I’m in the US and want to support the FishFam :). I’ll be sure to look for the update vid! Thanks! I just want one female betta for a pet on my desk at work.

    What did you get besides that one pair? You acclimated 4 bags.

    I have a 16 gallon with 4 female mollies and a female Betta spenden. I've been wanting to add in one or two B.imbellis. The Betta splenden I had used to be in a Betta sorority for around 8 months, but she was bullied so was rehomed to me. Is this a good idea?

      The imbellis is REALLY shy..but sometimes you can get ones that are more aggressive..and I would worry about there being competition for territory between the splendens and imbellis.

      @@CreativePetKeeping Update. I think I have the shyest Betta in the world. I moved the mollies to a different larger tank. They weren't attacking the Betta, but their presence was stressing her out (most likely because of their size).
      I know a lot about whether or not Bettas will get along depend on their personality. I'll keep watching her to see if her personality could be compatible. I'm thinking of adding some guppies in (because I have a lot of fry) and seeing how she deals with them. She grew up in a sorority, so maybe it will work? Or maybe it won't. What do you think?
