I would have never fogured this out, you ar tru genius, had to say thx u for this... I thought I needed a new stator, even went to online and they were no help. So the safety for kick starter red wire needs cut. Im goin back to banshee's this is crazy---
Cut the wire. These motors were originally used on a street bike motor with a kick start. The red wire was a safty shop the bike wouldn't start backward. It is a comen short in your stator that can usually be fixed by cutting the wire.
Hello, did the same thing happen to you as in the video? what is the red wire? I have the same problem and I have cut the red cable and it works. but what is the red wire?
I have had the same issue with my 04 raptor, did not have spark, I unplugged the round plug with the 3 white wires and regained ignition but no charging, was working on it today with everything plugged in as it should be and I have spark again and charging. Any ideas as to what maybe going on would be much appreciated, thanks for your time
Hemmm, so your saying you have the bike running and iddling. You then grab the spark plug wire insulator (spark plug cap) and remove it from the plug. You then hold the plug insulator close to the spark plug and check for spark. You see and have good spark untill you hit your throttle. Is that right? Did you unplug your rectifier and see if that changed anything? Have you tested your stator?.Checked all connections and wire harness? CDI units rarely ever fail, its almost alwase something elce.
I have a 03 as well. It would not start. I plugged it in and left it while I went to get a new plug. Put the new plug back in and it fired right up. Now when I shut it off its right back to having no spark. What the heck could be wrong?
Hay man i have a question to ask you I see you have some nice Raptors I have an 04 and it's running very poorly when it's cold it fires up and runs good but once it warms up it spits and sputters and cuts out and dies on me it seems like antifreeze is getting into my engine oil and when I pulled the spark plug out to check the spark it has good spark but it's not blue it's yellowish orangish doesn't seem right to me I feel like it should have a blue Spark any advice from anyone
I left my bike alone for two months no issues. When I went back to it it was completely off. I have two twins raptors. The battery is just fine but the bike makes no preignition sounds and does not light up as if the bike is dead. I checked most of the connectors and I do have power but still no electrical to start. No lights and no neutral lights have you ever had this. I ordered new stater rectifier and plug I’ve already replaced the fuse. I’m stuck
No, its will not harm anything. Its a wire from the older kick start model, from when the moto was on a bike..its a short that happens, they wire is a safety so the motor wouldn't start in reverse with a kick start model...also, no its NOT the same wire as the reverse limiter...that wire must be grounded to remove the limiter,& its green & white striped...
Is there anything I could have did wrong to make it stop firing again Evan tho I haven't cut da red wire yet or do I have to cut it to get it back firing
The 01 rectifier is mounted on the rear, just like yours is. The bike in the vid is a 03 & the rectifier is mounted different. The red wire you must cut is in the same spot for all years, just follow the video.
Can you tell me if this is the same wire for the reverse limiter? reading the below link and watching your vid, I think it is. (faq can't post weblinks) regardless thanks for the vid.
I unplug the spark wire with the raptor started but close to the sparkplug. There I can see the spark power disappearing when I hit the gas. "Cdi or coil)". ? Any help
I have a 01 wen I unplugged the recktafire I got spark I didn't cut the red wire cause Its not located in the same place as you my recktafire wasn't in the same place either mine was on the back I was wondering where the wire goes so I can find it and cut it and for sum reason now I don't get fire Evan wit the recktafire unplugged and I haven't Evan cut the red wire
Ive just tried this. I have no spark. If i disconnected the regulator. I still have no spark. I have no power to the coil. Anyone know what the possible problem is.
Actually, if you do the mod correctly it will charge the battery. If you just unplug the rectifier/regulator it will start but will NOT charge the battery.
hello banshee2raptor I have this same problem today, I have cut the red cable and the raptor comes back to life, now what is that red cable? Is it harmful to leave it like this? or nothing happens and I can be calm.
it's a short in the stator. Long story short ,cutting the red wire fixes the short. to truly fix the issue the stator needs to be replaced. however cutting the wire is a cheep easy way to get back in the trail.
Oh wow! I was just about to and buy a new ICM that increases RPM rev limit by 1000!? It said in the description check you stator first! I'm gonna do that first. What does the rectifier do then if it doesn't need to be plugged in?
I have a 04 660r that only gets a single spark the moment I let off the start button. If I unplug the rectifier I get a great spark. Do you think it’s my stator? I don’t not have a solid red wire or n mine. Any tips to figure this out?

Hot_top, it's more than likely your brake safety switch. A video might help! I can talk you threw the steps to test it.. it's a very easy fix, if that's your issue.
There's a switch on the front brake and on the rear. Even if it's unplugged , it can still get crap in it and cause a faulse brake condition. I recommend finding the switches and make sure they are disabled correctly, or working correctly. This is a common issue with Yamaha in general..lol

Your stator is more than likely shorted, you should have the Red wire.. might have to do some hunting, but its there from the factory.
this fix works but if you cut that wire the atv will not charge the battery when is running...
Spark power disappear when I hit the gas around 5rpm.
I have the same problem with my raptor... but never tried the red wire trick
Ok i have a 2005 raptor that is running fine but not charging batt what could be the problem
Hello, did you manage to solve the problem? I had the same problem cut the red cable and boot and it worked
De donde biene el fallo 😮
Why not just unplug the connector of the red wire vs. cutting it?
Michael Lawrence you can unplugs the connector and pull the pin out. it's just easier to show the correct red wire to disable by cutting .
