  • Andrew Bagnall’s McLaren F1 is one of only two in the world fitted with the extra high downforce package, featuring dramatic aerodynamic modifications, and a 680bhp LM-spec race engine.
An amateur racing driver from Auckland, New Zealand, Bagnall has owned his McLaren F1 - chassis #18 - for more than ten years. It’s no museum piece - he takes it out for a drive once a month.

I was fortunate enough to be parked behind a black version of the high down force F1 on the Channel Tunnel. The owner was driving it out to Spa with his grandson for a McLaren track event. He was going to drive his actual race car for that, not the F1.
Funny story, I was in my Wrangler(giant steel bumper) and the train attendant kept trying to get me to inch closer to the F1. I stopped, roller the window down and said, "I wasn't moving". I told her the car was, at the time, a 3-5Mil Euro car. She said, "you're good there" with a bit of a scared look on her face.

Thought #1: I can't believe they're still using those old Michelin tires. I always hoped that some company would make a suitable, modern tire for the F1 (both for stock wheels and these LM wheels).
Thought #2: Is there any video of this car at a New Zealand race track? I would love to see it.

Top speed will be lower with the down force. 215 mph - 220 mph at a guess. Round a track the times will be ridiculous.

Greiguci Wootchie my thoughts as well. Though, the increased handling from the down force more than likely makes up for the loss of top speed.

It's the only car that reminds me of a watch. The greatest analog watch that could ever be made. The machining, the precision, the design. Completely unique. Zero compromise. It's just incredible.
Some Pagani's are like watches with all the machining but they are more like jewelry. This is so function first. More pure. It's perfect.

The genius of Gordon Murray! Took on all of the established Ferrari, Porsche, Mercedes, Lamborghini and the rest and smashed them all to bits. Still holds its own 30 YEARS later. I’d not long go onto the M4 leaving London in the mid 90s and one came up behind me on an empty road. Watched it disappear in awe. I wonder what value they’ll get to in my lifetime 🥇

      It's a quite reasonable ass-umption.
      1. Driven often does not equate to driven far.
      2. After decades, this car will probably only have a few thousand miles on it.
      3. People who own cars like this, own a dozen other cars, so none of them are going to be high mileage, or daily driven.
      4. People with rare exotics often SHIP them to their destination before they drive them a short distance, then SHIP them back home.

In 1995 I was at the Avus in Berlin for the DTM and on both days they had a Fina liveried F1 do demo laps. If you don’t know the Avus track it’s on public motorway, so it about a 2.5 mile straight down one carriageway then a tight hairpin, the a blast back down the other carriageway into a sweeping small 180’ loop, and then is it. The F1 on each lap was pushed a little further on the gear changes and a bit hard on the tyres as the whole car got up to temp. I’ll never forget seeing a city stop to hear the sound of the F1 being push for near 3 miles going away from the grandstand and the blasting full chat, Hatty Flatters on the return leg. I’m sorry but for the brutal noise and sensations, Feck electric.
