Cold Weather ATV Camping in Autumn: Winter Comes Early in the High Country

  • I head into the Santa Fe National Forest for an overnight solo ATV camping trip above 11,000ft in northern New Mexico. Camping in autumn is a beautiful time of year to explore the outdoors when the leaves are changing colors, the weather is finally cooling down, and the smell of the forest has a rich woody aroma. Although it's the first week of October, a cold front came through a week prior giving the mountain its first snowfall and dropping the temperatures in the high country.

    Thanks again Ruben. We have our pick: high mountains, standard mountains, high desert, low desert, river valley, plains, and lakes. I love it here!! My favorite is where the desert meets the mountain treeline.

      You nailed it buddy. We are fortunate to have a large variety of riding terrain in New Mexico. I always say you can stand in each quadrant of NM and it looks different. I would have to agree with you in the desert landscape meeting the desert. So many cool canyons are ready for us to explore. Thank for reaching out and commenting. Have a great weekend.

    Hey Buddy ! Sorry I'mlate to the party. man what beautiful scenery on the ride to camp. I didn't know NM had forests like that, I thought you were riding i my neck of the woods haha (until I saw the shot with all the mountains and stuff lol)
    Camp and supper looked good, just a FYI: you have to watch heating food up in those can's, sometimes they have a wax on the inside of the can to protect it, and it can get in your food when heated. Good call on the leaving early, it's better to be safe than sorry. Plus you can always go back another day. Thanks for taking us along, Cheers my friend !

      Hey bud. I loved the scenery in this section of the forest. It does have a look and feel of what you ride in for sure. The crazy thing about New Mexico is the landscape is so diverse that literally every quadrant of the state looks different than other parts. I think over winter when our forest closes up I am going to explore some volcanic areas of the state. I have not shown this yet. Thanks for the heads up on the chile can with wax. I'll remember that for the next time.
      I narrowed it down with the ATV. I looked around and inspected it and couldn't find anything. So I spoke to my dealer and asked if he had come across an engine light coming on and off. He said it could be an early warning about your battery. So I pulled out my voltmeter and bingo. Volts were down so I replaced the battery. I think the cold night did it. I was about -5 degrees F in the morning with wind chill which is when the light came on. The good thing is in my gear I always carry a portable battery jump starter so if it happens I could at least start it. Anyways, thanks for watching buddy. Have a good weekend and cheers.

    You are so right about being up in high altitude and less oxygen. I think our highest altitude where I can go with my atv is around 1640 feet, so I will never experience altitude sickness. But people should also be aware that cooking temperature is different up there than down by the sea.
    You did the right thing to don't risk it with your atv, check engine light can be serious business. But you had a nice camping adventure, and I would just freeze when it's -11c even when I'm used to the freezing cold 😆
    That was a brutal wind at that top, I can just imagine how cold your body are after a few minutes there.

    • @ManzanoManATVAdventures
      @ManzanoManATVAdventures  2 года назад +1

      Altitude sickness is something to not play around with. In severe cases people can be hospitalized. But you are right about the cooking temperature as well. Plus even your cooking stove is affected by altitude. I am glad I decided to go home. There is no telling what could have happened up there if I stayed. Wind chill is nasty. I was really cold in the wind and I was only up there for about 10 minutes. Once I got down in elevation what a difference that made. At least you know what I am talking about. Take care my friend. Have a good one.

    Cold Morning -hot coffee sets up the day
    Check engine light , up here in Canada when its cold and your ATV is stored in doors like a shed .we find that check engine will light up
    when oil gets cold and a bit of condensation , the check light goes away when ATV builds up enough heat.
    Keep safe Brother Great VID. Great view nice drone footage.

      Man It would be awesome to have you come along for a day of riding, camping, and enjoying the outdoors. I love cold morning coffee. I appreciate the information on the ATV check engine light. Perhaps that is what it was. It was 12 degrees that morning and a 25 mph wind so wind chill had to be somewhere around -5 C. I'll keep that in mind and will have to pay attention to that in the future. Our high mountains are cold and snow pack gets deep up there. Not sure how many more times I will make it up there before they close it. So I will remember this if I do make it up there again before the season shut us down for mountains rides. Thanks for watching bud. Take care.

    What an awesome video buddy! Nice camp spot there too bad the wind had to mess with you all night. Good thing you had the water in your boiling pot already.
    I don’t blame you on calling it a trip after one night with the issues with your quad. Wouldn’t want to be out there solo like that and break down. Wow! The wind was crazy there on the summit!

      Having water in a pot to warm up right away is something I learned a long time ago when I had a freeze ice up all my water. So now I winterize water and always fill my cooking pots lol. I am glad to have had an opportunity to get out and ride. It is a shame the ATV did what it did. For some reason the light is off and all checks out fine. So I am stumped to what happened. I'll tell you what, it was a windy time out there lol. But I still enjoyed myself. Thanks for watching. Take care buddy.

      Yeah man, I was a bit bummed the ATV check engine light came on. The strange thing is it hasn't come on since and I have done a walk around. I have no idea why it would come on for a few and turn off. Who knows if high elevation and cold had anything to do with that. Take care my friend.

  • @quaddingsous

    Seems awfully strange that New Mexico would get snow before we do (western Canada). You probably got your production crew to make fake snow for the video - lol - - -
    11,450 feet? WOW! Can't say I've ever camped at that altitude. That's awesome buddy! - - -
    20:57 - For all the folks who didn't understand why Reuben was okay with leaving the gate open, here's an explanation: At this time of the year it's no problem because the cattle have already been rounded up and taken back down to the lower pastures, but in the summer we should always close the gate because in the time it takes us to go up there and back, an entire herd of cattle could escape, costing a rancher thousands of dollars. And if you were paying attention, you'd know that Reuben closed the gate behind him when he came down, so next spring when the cattle get released back into the area, they can't get through. Good job Reuben! - - -
    It's a shame your CanAm prevented you from continuing on, but better safe than sorry. - - -
    Excellent video bud! Thanx for sharin'!

    • @ManzanoManATVAdventures
      @ManzanoManATVAdventures  2 года назад +2

      Lol, man I had a crew up there with snow guns to change up the scenery. It came out good haha. It's a high elevation thing which is why there is snow already. This is the only range in New Mexico that gets a lot of snow. The other ranges get snow, but no where near this section. There will be drifts through June up there and even July in the neighboring peaks across the way. High elevation camping is wild. It gets cold even in the peak of summer lol.
      I am glad you pay attention buddy. Cows are no longer a problem at this elevation. Ranchers have taken them back because nothing would survive the winter. Everything heads into lower elevation. So you are right, I would have closed the gate otherwise if seasons where different. It's a shame I couldn't explore other branches of trail out there. There is always another day to ride and film the canyons below or other ridges.
      Thanks for watching Q. Take care my friend.

    I see how you are, flashing those pretty colors all up in my face, lol. I'm with ya buddy, I enjoy the extreme green in spring, and the color change in the fall. It was kind of a meh changeover here this year, I'm not sure why, but you have that sometimes.
    You ever start a fire with the rubbing two sticks together method? I have a friend who does. I'm not that patient, haha.
    There's alot to think about with alpine camping. I'm pretty out of my element with this stuff. I didn't know campfire works differently either. I've snowmobiled out in grand Mesa, CO and felt how that affects me. Never thought about the fire. It's been a long time since I've been out that way. No idea how that would affect me now. I really should work on losing some weight...
    ...and then you flash chili cheese dogs in my face. WTF, lol. That's so troll.
    Windchill is such a kick in the balls. 0 degrees isn't terrible. 0 and windchill sucks. I'm a pussy.
    You're making a good decision bud. The cold does weird shit to us and machines. The check engine light could have been due to low voltage from the cold start maybe. People come up here snowmobiling, not thinking about temperature, and they'll end up broke down somewhere in the middle of nowhere and freeze to death. I have a sled, maybe I'll make sled videos again this year, idk. The sad part is, it's not a good idea to do that stuff alone if I'm honest, but really I typically ride alone, so it feels like a "do as I say, not as I do" thing. But I'm also local and know where everything is.
    That wind is no joke, ROFL! That was funny.
    Hey Ruben, I'm always glad to join you on your adventures bud. You take care buddy!

      What's up buddy!?! We also have years that the leaves don't change as good. I think it all has to do with the climate change that is going on. I can remember in my younger days that the leaves were fairly consistent.
      I hear you on the weight, I am beginning the process of trying to change my weight also. It does have a small impact when you are higher up in elevation with breathing and moving around. I am wondering if the cold wind had something to do with the ATV. The hiccup hasn't repeated it's self at all, however, I am now seeing a low amp light come on so a battery is due for sure. Perhaps this was the case.
      Sledding would be awesome. To get into good snow I have to get into the mountains at least above 8500ft to get into consistent snow play. But the problem here is our forest close access to the forest so it would all be a fairly long foot walk lol. I hear you on going solo. I don't see that changing anytime soon either. Although it would be nice to have a riding buddy.
      Man them chilidogs were freaken awesome haha. I'll have to make this again in the future. Easy, quick, and delicious. Take care buddy. Talk soon!

    Need a bit of information from you if you can help sir. In one of you're videos I noticed a hitch cargo rack you had attached to youre unit. It looked great. How much weight did you put on it and did it at all affect youre steering for youre trail runs.

    • @ManzanoManATVAdventures
      @ManzanoManATVAdventures  2 года назад +1

      Hey there. My honest opinion about the cargo rack is I personally didn't like it. I loved having extra space to add things. However, the rack would drag in places that the trail would throw obstacles in you way. The other thing is is added to much rear weight causing the front to not steer as great. For what it was, I made it pretty far in on rocky and bumpy terrain. Thanks for watching bud.

    Really beautiful view from the top! Hopefully everything was OK with the ATV. That's the thing with CELs, they can be basically anything, from no concern at all to very serious. My Cherokee's CEL will turn on during wildfire season because the smoke in the air presumably triggers some warning about lean intake.
    The fall scenery was just amazing. I bet that tent was cold despite the fire, and I know how the wind can take any comfort out of the air around you.

      @ManzanoManATVAdventures  2 года назад +1

      So far nothing appears to be wrong with the ATV. I have no idea why the light would come on and turn off a few minutes later. I inspected it and I can't find nothing. But I am glad I didn't risk it any more and went home. That is so odd about the light coming on with smoke. I have never heard of that before.
      The views and scenery were amazing. It is wild how climbing up 400ft in elevation puts you into some brutal wind like I was in. I stayed there for only 10 mins or so before I could take the gust anymore.

    Beautiful scenery! Glad you mad it out and can check out your Atv when you get home, it would suck to get stuck way out there. I went out for a 117 mile ride in Southern NM yesterday and my biggest worry is getting stuck out in the middle of nowhere by myself with no cell signal. You made the right call. I am glad you know how NM is with cell signal. Some of these places aren't visited for a day or 2 so getting stuck is a major problem in these remote areas. I need to head south to ride and explore. There is so much of the state I need to travel to. We are lucky to have a large riding area and awesome terrain. Man that summit was wild lol.
