The Super Sylphs have combat speeds of Mach 2.92 in the novels (it says "over a thousand meters per second" in the novel version of the valley chase scene) and could go faster, and that was before the engine upgrade. The Mave is even faster.
If you read the book this is based on, the electrical resonance in the clouds and beneath them from the gate on the planet makes it supremely hard to get a decent hit with missiles - even a proximity detonation is hard to make if you're moving through the clouds, which is exactly he hit the deck. Its also the reason they have the giant aircraft carriers above the clouds and a fuckton of AWACs gear to compensate.
FAF has satellites in orbit for electronic and optical surveillance iirc; massive airborne aircraft carrier Banshee were also constructed in orbit then decent into atmosphere once completed.

But that's why ther Mave, even without the Super Phoenix MK XII can make those speeds.
probably variable swept compressor blade which slows down air less.. enabling higher exhaust velocity and operation speed. Jet engine's compressor themselves introduce drags since they need to slow down air before doing combustion. If air flows too fast engine will simply under perform and often flame out. However SCRAM jet engine operates on higher velocity where fuel only has few miliseconds to burn and heat up, and this also requires compressor to not slow down incoming air too much. Therefore such compressor is necessary to achieve the condition required to use SCRAM jet engine. (So' you can't use an oridnary jet engine compressor to power a scram jet, that's why NASA used a special ram air intake on their SCRAM jet prototype)
probably a air/exhaust cooled reactor, they've had a few prototypes of rocket/jet engines that run off nuclear reactors. from what i understand, the hotter the engine can run, the more fuel efficient it is; this is why jet engines are composed of more and more composite ceramics these days. theoretically, if you had a super hot running reactor, you could use it to super heat the combustion products and produce more thrust and fuel efficiency. what's neat is they do have the technical know how to build an engine like this, and darpa has an Ai power F-16 that can defeat human pilots, so, we're not that far off from high speed, high maneuverability platforms that can decimate any man driven military. maybe in two more generations, we'll be able to fight the JAM.
