Her name, "メイブ" was supposed to be spelt as "Maeve". An Irish female name with the meaning of "She who intoxicates" or "Intoxicating". Well... I guess the name fits Yukikaze quite perfectly, because a lot of us were "intoxicated" by her beauty alone.
There are tons of details made just for a specific scene, and you can only see them you look very closely. This is the anime that has the best attention to details so far. (There is still some weird scenes but better than others I had seen)
while I found the whole a bit too philosophic and incomprehensible plotwise (apparently it is comprehesible only if you've read the books), the battles in episode 4 and last episode 5 of the OVA was epic.
That's true, OVA had to omit tons of stuffs, and even modifying the original story. The story goes on after this scene in the book, IIRC the last banshee was destroyed due to nuclear melt down. Rei's Mave's designation was changed to B501, and many more details or changed plots. Too bad I can't find a translated copy of the new book.
Or perhaps Rei lived on a a fragment of the JAM’s collective consciousness. It’s been established that the JAM can create fake visuals such as the Rei in the final scene.
I don't know if anyone remembers the old Gerry Anderson supermarionation tv show titled Captain Scarlet, but there is an almost uncanny similarity between the JAM and the Mysterons, from Captain Scarlet.
It's Battle Fairy (Sento Yusei) Yukikaze. It's a 5-episode OVA based on two books by Chohei Kambayashi, Yukikaze and Good Luck Yukikaze, and goes well beyond them
This series doesn't go "well beyond" the books. What this OVA series does is basically pick and choose select chapters from the books and turned them into animated form, with quite a few changes from the source material. In particular, the final battle in the fifth episode is all anime original content. The ending of the second book had nothing to do with the Faery Air Force evacuating the planet. In fact, it ended on a major cliffhanger right when the JAM launched a major electronic warfare attack on the FAF main base which coincided with rising tensions in the FAF between its Tactical Fighter Squadrons and its Special Air Force (the two branches HATE each other) and ended up with the FAF collapsing into a civil war. Still gotta hold out hope that the third book will get translated to see how that furball ends up. That said, it's understandable why the anime created an original ending, because when the anime was made, the third book wasn't even out yet. It was first published in Japan in 2009, three years after the anime was already finished.
Oh there's a third book? I read two books and was left feeling very confused. 1. Why are they called the JAM? I don't recall the acronym or name being explained. 2. What do they want? I don't know why they're fighting at all.
1. The second book's prologue reveals that the original meaning of "JAM" has been lost, and it is basically just a term used to denote the enemy. There's nothing more to it. 2. This question is unimportant because it is one of the most important central themes of the series. The point being, that if we ever encounter an alien species, they would likely be so different and so unintelligible to us that we would never be able to understand them, truly. That said, both the anime and the novels give hints as to what the JAM want, though neither adaptation gives a definitive answer. In the anime, General Cooley and Dr. Foss speculate that the JAM treat existence as a type of mathematical equation, and that Earth was something that unbalanced an equation, with the biggest confounding factor being Yukikaze & Rei, so they are seeking to balance an equation. In the novels, the chapter "Faery - Winter" from the first book reveals that the JAM didn't perceive human existence for a long time, and they thought they were fighting against our computers and AIs. This suggests that the JAM are an electronic or similar energy-based beings, whose motives may be well beyond our understanding.
+DGneoseeker1 the guy above explains the second part, but JAM stands for Jet-powered Airborne Mechanoid(or metalloid, or mechanism). Can't remember where I saw that
You're missing the point. Yukikaze was an AI developed by humanity, and was humanity's only hope. There was a deep bond between Rei and Yukikaze, and Yukikaze actually cared for humanity. It was important that Rei be there at the end in a show of solidarity, also if you know anything about Rei, you'd know that he also wanted to be there at the end for Yukikaze, live or die.
Yukikaze is based on 2 books In the first one, "Yukikaze", the AI decides that humans are not needed and tries to prove it and be free to fight the enemy. In the second one, "Good luck, Yukikaze", AI and humans join forces since it is the alliance that allows them to become more than just parts The anime is slightly different from the first book, as the show lets us see human side more.

Rei was likely killed in the nuclear detonation. Even if he survived, there is low chance that he can make it through the portal before it is destroyed (by 3 high yield special-purpose nuclear bomb)
I think they left it open to debate and each one's interpretation.. the logical would be they die allowing the FAF to escape back to earth.. but at this point ALL the JAM wanted was Rei and Yukikaze because they as a team were the only thing the JAM didnt understand (lets renember that its implied that ALL this, the invasion, the war and the deliverate stale was the way the JAM studies and understands other cultures.. and in the end the only thing they couldnt understand was the combination of Rei and Yukikaze as a perfect symbiosis.) so another theory is that the JAM would go great lenghts to preserve Yukikaze and Rei.. maybe shielding them from the explosion and traping them in Fairy.. renember how when this episode starts the JAM have nearly trapped them and they escape simply by firing a missile at themselves.. wich forced the JAM to let them go so their missile doesnt kill them..
IMO I think Rei & Yukikaze survived. The JAM want Rei & Yukikaze alive at ALL COSTS, and will do everything in their power to keep them alive. When Rei & Yukikaze fall into those JAM traps where they are teleported to a pocket-dimension throughout the anime, Yukikaze realizes the only way to escape the pocket-dimension traps is to let themselves get "killed" by the JAM; which the JAM then teleport them out of said pocket dimensions because they want them alive. I believe the JAM did this again in the final mission, where they saved Rei & Yukikaze from the ensuring nuclear explosions, and set them in some sort of simulation/fake reality where the FAF is still fighting the JAM; most likely so the JAM can continue observing Rei & Yukikaze; organic & inorganic intelligence working in harmony, since the JAM fail to understand organic life and only perceive inorganic life (at least in the anime).
