    with the new crew changes Carronades have a benefit due to the weight and crew requirement. Problem is most large fights the fleets want everyone in a 'conga line' and you find yourself not shooting for 75% of the battle until the lines collide. As a Mercury fan, this makes me sad, as a Merc with 24lb carronades is a great ship imo...just doesn't mesh well with fleet tactics.

    Thanks for your video's, new to Naval Action and these have helped heaps. Now if only I could get my ping down whilst playing in Australia I'd be really happy.

    You forgot a really important factor. The reload speed, and mediums have the best reload speed, carronades next then the slowest are the long guns IIRC

    Thank You!! I'm reading Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans. The book states the USS Carolina (eighty-nine-foot vessel) armament included a dozen twelve -pounds carronades and three long nine-pound cannons.

    This video has very good quality video and audio. Keen to play this game when occasion permits. I've read that the carronades are devastating as you said it is just that their range is very short. "Yardarm to yardarm range" I think they called it.

    i recently started playing the game and upgraded my initial ship to 12 lb caronades. The first tier missions usually have me circling pretty close with the npc ships so i figured more dmg = more xp = i can upgrade my ship sooner.
    Is it worth grabbing a privateer at lvl 2? Or do you think its better to stick with the initial ship till im able to crew a 100 man ship?

    • @AxeManAnt
      @AxeManAnt  9 лет назад

      +zexman id say stick with the cutter, when you're rank two, you can sail a pickle which will help you learn manual sails, and then move on to a snow.....i usually skip the pickle and wait until the snow, but thats just me. however if you can capture a privateer to try it out, go for it as they are great little ships

    Nice video again. Longs take the longest time to reload, and, I think, carronades take the shortest.
    I am one who fights mostly at closer ranges with carronades. However, in pvp, a ship with cannons can stay out of your range and pick you to pieces.

    • @The0culus

      Medium cannons reload the fastest. They give up the range of the long cannons and damage of carronades.

    • @lennarthoek8392
      @lennarthoek8392 8 лет назад

      so if you chose between long 6 medium 6 and 12 carronade, then the carronade would reload the fastest??

    • @e.kent.d9561
      @e.kent.d9561 8 лет назад

      Well now that I see what The0culus says above, I guess the mediums reload the fastest. I still prefer the carronades for the great damage they do. probably best to try them out to see what suits your style better.

    is there any difference in damage between the different cannons when using grape or chain?

    • @AxeManAnt
      @AxeManAnt  8 лет назад +1

      +Theodor Karlsen In short, yes. So long as you are close enough to make use of carronades, they will do more damage with chain, and especially grape. With med and long cannons, I'm not 100% on how the game handles the differences between grape and chain with the two different types of cannon. However in real life, the long cannons would have a higher muzzle velocity and greater accuracy with chain and grape, but less of a spread, which is something you'd probably want to make use of (you'd want higher spread the closer you are) when damaging sails and crew in game. So it's a balancing act between what works best for you, and what's deals maximum damage. Sorry i couldn't give a more definite answer.

      +AxeManAnt Thank you! that answer was more than good enough for me :)

    I like to cap NPC traders on my spare time, so I run a snow with long cannons on the bow and stern. Just fall in line with a fleeing ship, chain their sails, and use round shot to knock down their masts. Whether I run longs or carronades on the sides is mostly down to my mood.

    • @AxeManAnt
      @AxeManAnt  9 лет назад

      +Louis Chapman yup, exactly the way i do it.....the stern and bow chasers are one of the reasons i think the snow is one of the best ships in the game, pound for pound.

    • @GinKasai
      @GinKasai 9 лет назад

      AxeManAnt
      It's tactically flexible. You can chase, you can kite, or you can slug it out without having to really force the ship into those roles.
      Traders tend to just pick a heading and run dead away from you. The snow is perfect for getting right up on their stern and plinking away at their masts. And when they go down, it has enough cargo space to haul away the spoils.
      AND, it's one of the largest ships that can traverse shallow water, which opens up the bahamas and other island ports. Definitely worth keeping one on-hand once you're able.

    I'm confused - how can medium guns do MORE damage than long guns? What gives the long guns more accuracy and range is a higher velocity of shot due to their longer barrels, and so as a consequence, they have more penetration at range "X" than medium guns that have a lower velocity. So a medium gun that penetrates less than a long gun does more damage???

    • @AxeManAnt
      @AxeManAnt  8 лет назад

      In reality yes. But it's a means of balancing the game. Sometimes realism has to be sacrificed in exchange for balance and playability.

    • @lawrencestanley8989
      @lawrencestanley8989 8 лет назад +1

      +AxeManAnt I thought the developers said they weren't going to "dumb down" the game? I REALLY hope that they don't turn this into a sailing version of "war thunder" for the sake of balance... That would be a crying shame.

    • @AxeManAnt
      @AxeManAnt  8 лет назад +1

      +Lawrence Stanley yes, but they can't just make long guns overpowered, otherwise you might as well never use anything else. This is a game first and foremost, not an interactive, historical learning tool. It's the same as the fact that a ship would never carry full sails all of the time but we pretty much do in game.

    • @lawrencestanley8989
      @lawrencestanley8989 8 лет назад

      +AxeManAnt I know, I know, you're absolutely right of course.
      I just wish there were more games out there that would strive for absolute realism. Well, as much as can be had in a PC game that is. You should hear me rant about first person shooter games that use a stupid health bar - where someone can get shot (body armor or not) and just keep right on going as if nothing happened. Developers of games like that (*cough, cough* The Division, *cough, cough*) either have never actually seen what a real bullet does to bare flesh, or they just don't care.
      On a good note, I am looking forward to "War of Rights" that seems to want to get it right. We'll have to wait and see.

      The caliber decides the damage output. A 18cal long basically does same damage as 18cal medium cause the caliber is the cannonball size. But because the cannonball of the long cannons travel faster, it will penetrate easier.
      In short, the game is accurate on that regard. Atleast right now it is even more so.
      Same caliber long or medium cannons do same damage but the difference is the penetration value and the distance it can travel and still output decent damage.
      If you get 18 pound carronades, it will do about the same damage as 18 pound medium and long. But because carronades are much more compact in design, you can fit bigger carronades than cannons. E.g. you can have carronades with higher caliber than cannons at the expense of distance and accuracy.
      So....tldr;
      Long cannons:
      Pro's:
      long range, high accuracy, consitent penetration on longer distances.
      Con's:
      Long reload time, heavier, more crew requirement.
      Medium cannons:
      Pro's:
      Average damage, average penetration, average reload time, average weight, average crew requirement.
      Con's:
      Doesn't really excel in anything
      Carronades:
      Pro's:
      High damage, high penetration, fast reload, low crew requirement, low weight.
      Con's:
      Can't use double shot, can't use double charge. Bad range, bad accuracy.
