Ever wondered what it might be like to live in a home converted from something completely different? In this episode of The Converted, homeowners Nikki and Michael Dalton give us a tour of their stunning home, converted from an old fire station.
Built in 1938, the building functioned as a fire station right up until 2006. The old fire station had space in spades and the heritage feel drew the couple in. And while Michael couldn’t quite work out how they were going to turn it into a family home, Nikki was confident they could utilise the sprawling space to create a unique dream home.
The couple commenced the renovation process in 2015 and Nikki was adamant she wanted something unique, but ultimately a family home.
“I think deep down I’d always wanted something a bit different, a bit quirky and a bit unique. But more than anything, on a practical level, I wanted a big family home”, she says.
The renovation included a unique roof design that created more space in the floor plan, and brought the exterior of the building indoors-which creates an eye-catching design, and a nod to times gone by.
They wanted to keep the look and feel of the fire station and be as sympathetic as possible to the building, making design choices that retained the heritage feel while ensuring the floorplan was functional.
Today, the beautiful rural home, situated in Brisbane, QLD is used by the couple to raise their family and as a base to run their food business.
The purchase has been worthwhile according to Michael “Business teaches you it’s all about problem solving, opportunities are [found] in the unusual things that people have neglected - areas in the market that haven’t been exploited yet.”
