Upon seeing John and Jan Williamson’s home in the Melbourne suburb of Brighton, you might think that you’re just looking at a late 18th Century church, and you wouldn’t be wrong. But, there is more than meets the eye with this stunning historical building.
In this episode of The Converted, Jan and John give us a tour of their beautiful converted church home. Despite it’s exterior walls being almost entirely the same as its original condition, the interior of the church has been transformed into a beautiful home for the retired couple.
The church, named after Scottish reformer who turned Scotland from Roman Catholic to Presbyterian, was the first Presbyterian church in Australia. It was designed by famous architect Charles Webb, known for designing South Melbourne Town Hall and the Royal Arcade.
The couple discovered the church for sale in the newspaper, and after Jan had always dreamed of transforming an old church into a home, decided to purchase the church and convert it.
They’ve made a conscious effort to keep the church in as much of its original condition as they could. Retaining the original middle aisle of the church all the way to the ceiling, maintaining the extremely high ceilings of the original space, They both agree that one of the most stunning aspects of the home is it’s stained glass windows, with the gorgeous colours and the warming effect they have when sunlight streams through them.
The John Knox Church home is an inspiring example of how old structures can be transformed into something new.
