Seeing What Lives Around Me By Making A Paludarium Ecosphere / Closed Ecosystem
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 3 ноя 2019
- I made a paludarium ecosphere out of an old aquarium. A paludarium is part land based and part water based, so part terrarium and part aquarium. This paludarium is closed and therefore a closed ecosystem. By watching what lives in the paludarium I can see what lives around me. All sorts of interesting stuff, including tubifex worms, hydra and even water boatmen.
Enjoy!

Me 5 hours later: frantically shoving dirt and water into a jar.
lol
Same
Why is this so accurate
Me: I have a massive assignment due in a few hours. Also me: *Proceeds to watch a snail doing nothing in particular to the sound of electric guitar for three minutes straight*
Me: Excellent
Little guy's shredding it out there
Same, I got over three hours worth of calc due in about 3 hours 😂
did we all just come here to procrastinate? i'm in the middle of a paper that was due an hour ago lol
that must be because you don't leave things to the last minute and your assignment was finished yesterday
That's me rn xD

I have bladder snails in my aquarium too and they float and sink as a faster means of transport alot. I call it "parasnailing". 🙂
I'm stealing that term. That's my term now. :)
That's my new favorite word
That's adorable!

Nature is so interesting. Even simple and small things like this are filled with complexity. I thank you for being educational.
Please explain
@@benyere NOt much to explain if you examine anything in life or nature really closely youll see there are many moving parts happening at once.
@BenJee Complexity in nature is the difference between this channel describing the many thriving organisms interacting with each other in an airtight ecosystem that somehow recycles itself continuously to sustain life, and someone else seeing only water and pond scum.
@Electro_blob 2 hi.
camping tip: boil your water, everybody
Ye
But then you'd kill all the cute little water demons D:
@The Boring Developer, he means for if your camping and you need water to drink, then boil it because you don’t want to drink them.

And can you post another Awesome video
Cool story, bro.

After tough days in class this is what reaffirms the fact that I do love science and I do want to get my degree in biology. Thank you for reminding me of what it is that I love about the world around us!!
:)
@@LifeinJars How do you prevent gathering mosquitoes? I would like to try this but am afraid that I would get an infestation in my house and perhaps even dengue fever.
"Oh look. A pretty duck."
Thank you for sharing that moment with us. It was, indeed, a pretty duck.
Incredible work mate, this is just what I spent hours doing when I was young, you have re-kindled my love of pond life and I'll be building my own Paludarium very soon.
Just a suggestion bro: See if you can rig up a microscope to show just how much life there is in a single drop of that water.
I used to spend hours with my microscope watching Paramecium and Amoeba.
Also looking at Cyclops, Hydra and Daphnia under magnification is so cool because you can see their insides and their means of locomotion.
All the best mate. Respect. Louie
The visual quality is much better with the proper aquarium, but I can suggest gluing a microscope slide to a jar lid if you want a better window for classic jars. I did that for my pond jar and laid it on its side, works pretty good for macro, but not good enough for microscopy sadly (glass is too thick).
Yeah that's what I'm afraid will happen as well. The glass being too thick.
@@LifeinJars I also realized just now that a common DSLR camera filter is a low cost and is already round for an easier fit. I had to cut my microscope slide to fit my jar lid and it wasn't pretty...
@@LifeinJars Even a hand-held lens of around 8x gives a good visual by eye as a lot of the micro-life tend to hug the glass of the vessel anyway
I think I'll try to add a cover glass over a small hole in the next jar I make. They're very fragile but over a hole should still be ok to hold back a few inches of water pressure.
Made my own little terrarium because of your videos! Going on 6 weeks and the plants are thriving!!

Y’all are wildin. I bet none of you have had pet fish before 🙄🙄🙄 or any pet for that manner.
Brittany Marie this is nothing like having a pet fish this is nasty
U kinda just made me never go to rivers for a swim
Well there's plenty of small crustaceans in the sea as well ;)
This stuff is harmless, human pollution is far worse
Right.. I've swam in some shady spots 😂😂
I went with my friens to those "artificial" rivers(the ones like in GTA V, it looked exactly like that" with our bikes n skateboards trying to do some stunts and 3 of us fell into the water, we latter noticed worms or larva thinggie on them and one guy creepD out like a big pussy but it could have been worse lol
*Mike Stephano* those artificial rivers are typically called canals

For your next video you should have 2 different ecosystems then after some time put them into a bigger jar and see what happens

Watching during quarantine. "Aqua Dirt" sounds like a Pokemon move lol.
Coming from a person that keeps Saltwater Reef tanks yours looks completely natural and normal! Awesome job! There's a lot of things that go on in these ecosystems! Most people don't know what goes on around them in every day life.
I just started my own little ecosphere from stream water and watching your videos teaches me so much about all that I’ve captured!! Tubifex worms, daphnia, bladder snails and other “unidentified worms” have shown up so far

It wasn't really an ecosystem, it was more like a small hydrophonic garden. And from what I remember - it froze during the first night.

so excited to see this, feels like a great expansion of the original content of the channel. Always glad to see such awesome content in my sub feed.
I made one myself about a month ago and there were a lot of creatures that i didn't know what they were. This helped identify a lot of them. especially the Water Boatman and Pygmy Backswimmers. Hopefully there'll be more of them down the line.

I have found your channel only recently and I love it! I am coming to a sad conclusion now, though - from now on I actually need to wait all this long time to see updates, while in case of old videos I could watch "1 year" updates whenever I wanted to ;_;
Cheers from masters biotechnology student!
these videos are always very wholesome and interesting. Glad to have found this channel! Keep up the good work, friend! :D

I absolutely LOOOOVE all your videos!!! Never stop making them! You are important in this world for what you do! 😍😍😍😍😍
You inspired me to make my own Ecosphere!
it has a few lovely snails, a rediculous amount of extremely small worms, and some rather large (1/2 inch or so) worms that crawl like inchworms!
Sadly, there is not as much variety of micro life in mine. There is a few Ostracods and crustaceans, but i don't see those all too often.
That's really cool
@@LifeinJars thank you very much. I also saw one of the larger bladder snails try to slide over a large plenarian, which was amusing. Its a very fun and relaxing hobby!
I made an ecosphere as well using rainwater and dirt from my garden, the only two creatures I spotted living in it yet are small reddish worms and small light-brownish worms
You are one of my favorite channels i love when you upload its neat to see all of the tiny animals we take for granted !!!
this is really cool! a closed paludarium is not a concept i’ve seen before, it really makes me want to try one. keep it up dude! can’t wait to see how it develops.

Cool man i'm happy to see this channel grow I have watched you for a year
i love it! cant wait to see updates
When is the best time of year to collect dirt and water for a maximum amount of life. Spring? Summer?
It depends on what you want really.
It depends on the creatures you want to catch because some are in their larval form and some go into dormant states depending on the seasons
I'd say spring. But you’ll find plenty of life all year round.
@@LifeinJars Agreed, there was an insane amount of dragonfly naiads and mosquito larvae in my pool's cover earlier this year before we took the cover off.

A combined ocean and freshwater closed ecosystem would be awesome! You could have 2 other jars acting as control groups taken from the same area as well to show which species are from their distinctive ecosystem.
