Tai O is an ancient village where only decendents of the villagers can live/build. The smells you encountered are drying fish, which are then used heavily in many cuisines. It is not a poor village, just very old.
You mentioned about the Hong Kong Museum of History, which is definitely worth spending 2-3 hours in. It is so interesting there. They don’t open on certain days, so keep in mind in case you plan to check it out! Great content of HK! It is an interesting place indeed. 20 minutes will take you from the heart of the city to the beaches, and hiking trails that have amazing scenic views.
Awesome to see the other side of Hong Kong thru' your eyes. That cable car ride is amazing, love the spectacular scenery along the journey. That fishing village is similar to Pulau Ketam of M'sia. In fact, it's a beautiful fishing village life. Well, Steve lvana, you both have done another amazing job by showing us this interesting tour. Thanks a bunch.
For Macau, you can also feel that the casino areas and residential area are also two worlds. Macau residential area is much like counterparts of old Hong Kong, but with much slower pace. BTW, If you really want to feel the poverty of Hong Kong, try the area around Sham Shui Po MTR station.
Steve & Ivana, you have made an absolute right choice to see one of the other sides of life in HK❤ Tai O offers stark contrast to the busy, fast paced and packed metropolis you get in downtown. It’s great for you to have walked up the surrounding hills that I as a local have not experienced. Trying out the shrimp paste pancake is tops among your adventurous spirit too 👍👍
Thank you so much for your patience and deep visit to Hong Kong. You both are brilliant as you will use your soul to understand a place, its reality and difference. Happy journey in Hong Kong, we look forward your second visit.❤❤
When I was in Jinan it was amazing to see this different aspect, and having experienced similar in the US (believe it or not) I noticed the differences and the similarities. We can learn so much about ourselves and the world in this way.
You are so kind hearted Steve, but don’t worry. Most village people there are having a good life. They just enjoy keeping the houses and lifestyle as long as they can. Some of them have properties elsewhere , but the older generation particularly prefer staying there for retirement.
Had the best squid dish in Tai O! ❤️ One of the few fishing villages left in HKG, how most of HKG used to look like decades and decades ago. The pink dolphins there are adorable! ❤️ The other fishing area that I like is Sai Kung although it’s definitely “upmarket”.
Awwwh yeah! HK’s islands are an experience. You should check out the 10,000 Buddha Temple at Shatin. Say hello to the Reverend. He doesn’t say much but speaks volumes.
😊 Most of them are original inhabitants/aboriginals. They might not be rich but absolutely not poor😂. But they're elderly. Actually my father was born in Tai O but he moved out and went to urban area looking for jobs in 1960's. Just like most young people at that time. My father is 85 years old now😊. I enjoy watching your videos.❤ Thanks for visiting Hong Kong.
HK villagers are rich😂😂 as people living in town, we always admire those living in villages. Don't get confused by the outlook of the houses, usually the owner's just keep it that way because they treat it like "family heritage". And many families, are doing international business 😂😂😂
The Svastika is an ancient Aryan symbol the oldest can be found in Europe in Ukraine from 10 000 years ago. No nefarious reasons why the Germans chose it.
Everywhere in China they are building something futuristic, preserving something from the past, giving us enormous range of travel experiences. Wonderful! That’s why people say, you could spend years “stuck” traveling in China. 😅
Tai O is not a place suitable for tourism. Although it is free, the place is very basic and feels messy. Not worth visiting. 大澳不是一個適合旅遊的地方。 雖然是免費的,但是地方很簡陋, 感覺很雜亂。 不值得參觀。
You’re not wrong, but the conditions drastically differ based on region. In my hometown Zhejiang Province, villages are mostly refurbished . Some villagers even open up their houses as B&B. West regions like Guizhou, Sichuan, Gansu province, villages are a bit more remote, don’t necessarily look as nice
Thanks for visiting HK, As a Local citizen, we love to see tourists from worldwide to visit our place at anytime ❤

Hong Kong is not a country, but a special administrative region of China

Hong Kong seafood is expensive, So a lot of fishermen are rich, 600g of dried oyster meat in Hong Kong can be sold for HK$600.
Also take kmb bus route 53 before sunset from tsuen wan west station.

Nice vlog!
Not many tourists know Tai O! Did you try Sata andagi? That's Tai O's famous food!
Not sure if you're into Kung Fu movies but there's a Donnie Yen movie called "Kung Fu Jungle" that's shot partly in Tai O.
Should visit Cheung Chau Island and Lamma Island
While at Tai O did you guys visit the Heritage Hotel? It used to be a police station remake into a luxury hotel with all its original details
Steve, you reminded me of a person. Bob Mckenzie. Same laugh😅 eh

The symbol can be seen everywhere in East ans Southeast Asia, the N*zis flipped it and turned it 45 degrees.
Also thank you for visiting my city;)
我想发你几张乡野图片哈哈,看看北方农村风貌

The Nazi sign is “SS”. The Buddha sign is like “ZZ” which is opposite from SS.
Not quite sure they keep it that way on purpose. Look at the food they are selling. Very expensive. It is build for tourist

HK has 5G and wifi coverage like 97% coverage and calls DON'T DROP out EVER!
💯👏🤩✊️🤘
These are the slums (favela)!
It's amazing how prosperous it was under the noble British Empire!
Hello there, are you a yellow silk?
Tai o is not poor village.

I didn’t like Hong Kong when I visited last summer, it’s like China 10 yrs ago. I mean downtown
🤣🤣🤣🤣, 我看你不知道中國和香港的發展前後, 在中國是20年内的城市發展, 在香港已超過40年城市
Hello
