Chochoyotes en caldo de lentejas. Video en Español comienza al minuto 4:31
(Super disculpa pronuncie Chochoyotes mal al final del video)
    RECIPE
    Chochoyotes:
1 cup instant masa flour, I used Maseca
    1 cup hot water
    Pinch of salt
In a large bowl add instant flour and salt, slowly add water to form your masa. Knead masa for at least 5 minutes.
When your masa is no longer sticky, feels soft and hydrated, form a ball. Keep covered to prevent drying.
Form little balls, about 15 grams each.
Press the center of each masa ball with your thumb creating a little bowl shape.
Fill a medium to large pot with water. When water comes to a simmer add your Chochoyotes. Bring to a boil. Cook for 10-15 minutes. They float to the top when they are done.
    //
    Chipotle-tomato soup:
    2 roma tomatoes
    Piece of onion
    3 garlic cloves
1 guajillo pepper, hydrated in hot water
1 chipotle pepper in adobo sauce + adobo to taste
    4 tsp vegetable bouillon paste
    3 cups water
    Pinch of Mexican dry oregano
    Blend ingredients until smooth
    //
    1 tbsp avocado oil
    1/4 cup onion, diced
    Pinch of cumin seeds
    3/4 cup lentils
    3 cups of water
    Cilantro or Epazote bunch
    Salt to taste
To a hot pot add avocado oil, diced onion. Cook for 1 minute.
Add cumin seeds, stir to keep from burning. When onion becomes translucent add sauce.
Add lentils and cilantro bunch. Taste for salt, add more bouillon if needed. Cover and bring to a slow simmer.
15-20 minutes later when lentils have cooked through, add your Chochoyotes.
Cook for a few more minutes then turn off flame.
    RECETA
    Chochoyotes:
    //
    Sopa de jitomate y chipotle:
    ✨Ingredientes:
    2 jitomates roma
    1 pedazo de cebolla
    3 dientes de ajo
1 chile guajillo, hidratado en agua caliente
1 chile chipotle en adobo y adobo al gusto
4 cdta de pasta de consome de verduras
    3 tazas de agua
    Pizca de oregano seco
    Licua los ingredientes
    //
1 Cda de aceite de aguacate
    3/4 taza lentejas
    1/4 taza cebolla picada
    Pizca semillas de comino
    3 tazas de agua
    Cilantro o Epazote

Crazy my mother was also Veracruzana, and would make these “ollitas” in “caldo de res” all the time when I was a kid, I never put the two together and never thought of it as a specialty dish from that city. I’m thrilled you put this video out!!!

My mom made these growing up. We called them "bolitas de masa," I did not know that Chochoyotes was the official name for them. She would make them in a caldo with the same seasonings but with beef and verdolagas (purslane). They were a real treat. But this is a really cool vegan recipe!
I haven't had them in years and totally forgot about them. Thank you for bring them back into my rotation.
    Best,
    Yajaira

Wow that sounds so lovely, thank you for sharing💗 Bolitas de masa sound so cute! When I posted this recipe on Tiktok I discovered through people’s comments, that they go by many names depending on the region. I just love how diverse Mexico is and how much food connects us💗

Ooh!!! I am DEFINITELY going to make this!! Thanks for this!! I wish I could have you over for dinner and share recipes! 😊 You are my ‘go-to’ place when I need a vegan Mexican dish.😁.
What part of Mexico are you from?
Also have you made milanesa yet? What would you use as the “meat”?

Aw thank you I appreciate you so much🥰
I was born in LA to Mexican immigrant parents. My mom is from a small rancho/pueblito in Jalisco and my dad is from CDMX. Different customs, music, food ❤️I feel so lucky!
Ooh I do! I made ‘milanesa’ with oyster mushrooms. I believe I posted the recipe on IG and Tiktok🥰

So!!! Ever since seeing this recipe, se me ANTOJÓ! Thankfully today was not a hot day here in Chicago, so I made it!! Let me tell you….. my boys (8 & 6) LOVE IT!!!!! They can be picky about some new things, but this has things they love!! Lentils, masa 😅, cilantro….. It is delicious!!! Thank you for this great recipe! They are asking for more!!! Next time I said I’d try to maybe fry the dumplings a bit 🤷🏻‍♀️ I think that will give it another good texture to the masa. 😋 🤤 Sópe soup. Jajajaja!
