This has long been one of my very favorite Elton John tracks, from the 1970 album TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION. I finally got to see Elton perform it live during his "Farewell Yellow Brick Road" Tour in Graz, Austria in July this summer, and it was a pure delight for me.
I'm tickled whenever I play this song because I'm reminded of how I learned it. When I was 15 years old, in the summer of 1994, my high school band took a trip to Washington D.C., and we rode in buses 2/3 of the way across the U.S. to do it. I sat with my oldest, and still closest friend, Alex on that trip, who had aspirations of being an elected public servant.
As such, he was a total nerd for D.C. and had an endless amount of trivia to share about every building, tree, and statue we drove past. Between him and the tour guide that was actually on the bus with us, I got more than an earful and by the time we started back for Nebraska, I was tired, impatient, and grouchy. LOL
So, I put on my headphones and decided I was going to get REALLY familiar with this amazing song I was so excited by, "Burn Down the Mission". I listened to it on repeat for about 5 solid hours during one stint on the bus, and drove Alex even more crazy than he had driven me with his unsolicited tour-guiding! 😃
But...it paid off....by the time we got home, I had literally learned the song, and I've been playing it ever since. 5 hours of annoying my friend for 25 years worth of fun.....totally worth it! 😁

Beautiful cover Sir, Have you partition of this song ???
hey Steve great tune have loved it since it was released way back in 1971!! Vocals are right on , but just a little bit of constructive comment, maybe play it a half or full step lower. Thanks for putting your story with this great tune, love the historical insight into how you learned the tune!! Still gotta put in a plug for "Souvenir" tutorial God Bless Bruce
This is already a whole tone lower than the original recording....I chose this key because I wanted lots of intensity with the highest notes, which goes away when they are "too easy" to hit. But to each own. I know I've been saying I would get around to some tutorials again for a while, but I actually do think I'll be carving some time out for that in December and the first quarter of 2020...thanks
@@PianoManSteve Allright Steve I understand your point. You are right, I KNOW myself I'm lazy and WANT the "too easy" to hit feeling when singing. Then again I'm in my 60's and intensity for me sometimes is an after thought!:-) Your cover today allowed me to renew my Elton John LP interests, and am amazed at how many studio LP's he's released!!! I should go on an Elton binge and I'm sure I'll discover dozens of songs I have never heard. I will plead guilty to only being familiar with probably 25 to 30% of his catalog. Do you still use your PO Box in Mesquite? I'd like to write you. thanks man, Bruce
You're brilliant would love to help you grow your social media!!!!
I'll take all the help I can get.....please reach out to me at www.pianomansteve.com/about-contact if you want to discuss it :-)
Hello, Hi - Привет
Привет
phenomenal performance of a very underrated song. I guess because of the long unconventional instrumental sections it never really gained much traction with the public.
Thanks! This is one of my top 5 Elton John songs, and I agree that it is vastly underrated! :-)
@@PianoManSteve You're welcome. What are the other 4 if I can ask?
@@mat5473 "Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters", "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Your Song"......but then there are like 20 tied for 6th place LOL
@@PianoManSteve Thank you, I have to admit I'm not a huge elton fan and I don't know the first two so I will check them out. Thanks again.
Madman across the water didn’t make the top 5? That’s my fav. Awesome cover by the way phenomenal
