  • Dad's Army is a group of 50+ mountain bikers who have been mountain biking for many years. Today we explore why we still ride after all these years.
    Todays ride we are at Woodhill mountain bike park in Auckland NZ and explore some easier grade 3 trails.

    Brought a tear to my eye if I'm honest.
    Why I ride at 50? Too yoing to feel old to old to be young.
    I got into mountain biking pretty late in life. But finding your limit by pushing it too far, being able to forget your 50, and act like your 20 something with like-minded old and new friends fills the cup.
    Thanks, dads army! Remember, growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional!

      I am still too young to act old. I often think I should be sensible and take up bowls but I love the adrenaline rush of doing things that scare me. I know there are consequences but I just can't give it away just yet.

    64, fairly recent rider (4 year) ride with a group of 40-50 year olds. Started on an Levo now I ride my acoustic as much as my e bike. The group still out rides me but graciously wait at the bottom. They have definitely made me a better rider. Spent a day at the bike park in Big Bear California, I am really enjoying the ski lift up part. I have never ridden Whistler, skied it plenty, but I have done both at Mammoth and it is worthy of a trip. Hit Mammoth and Tahoe, then head to Colorado and that is an epic trip, skiing or riding. Great video, liked the interviews.

    • @bestdayevermtb2
      @bestdayevermtb2  20 дней назад

    • @LevoRider
      @LevoRider 20 дней назад +1

      @@bestdayevermtb2 yes both Mammoth and Big Bear allow class one. Northstar in Tahoe allows them. Most ski hills that have become summer bike parks allow them. I ride my Levo on 95% of the public trails in San Diego. Colorado can be a little challenging as some of the ski areas are on Federal land and it depends on the land manger if they allow e bikes.

    @markthompson7817 24 дня назад +4

    Saw you guys heading off at Woodhill’s the other day and saw the group photo being taken, we were under the umbrella watching. I called out but you looked busy.
    We have a similar group but probably on average 10-15 years older. Some of us have been riding together for 30 plus years starting in Rotorua when it all kicked off, no marked trails and no suspension. There we started a concept that was we make a time each week and whoever turns up we ride, social media has supercharged this, I think there may be 30 on the what’s app group, but the base concept is still the same. As time goes on the social connections have become more important as time goes on, men do talk but best after the manly pursuit of MTB. EMTBs for many of us have kept us in the game through varying health problems. If someone is ill or injured they still come out for the post ride coffee. There are now three rides a week that we can join at Woodhill.
    There are group rides to do many of the main trails/trail systems in NZ, we are lucky now to have members in Queenstown and Rotorua, to call on. Individuals do other things like our member who is riding across America at the moment or the one who pushed through fatigue syndrome to ride the length of NZ. Some of our standout riders are winning major events in the over seventies division still on muscle bikes. Guys come back from broken backs/necks, knee and shoulder replacements/reconstructs, we all love riding and the company.
    We call ourselves the Woodies, we were Dads Army but someone else had that name so we changed. We have nick names, shortcut, no breaks, nudge, crash, bailiff etc… And we run a crash register the one who scores the most points on this receives a prize at our annual BBQ.
    Oh and there is a song coming out…

      That is really cool. Dad's Army is certainly not unique. There are groups all over the country doing exactly the same thing. Awesome guys!! I'm in the US. Just about to turn 61 and got back into mtb 4yrs ago, initially as a way to cross train for rim-to-rim runs in the Grand Canyon. Mtb soon became all I could think about, and the majority of my training! I converted a 2008 Rocky Mountain Flatline 1 DH bike, to be an all mountain training rig, by adding a dropper, and 1x. It's 46lbs/21kg of goodness, and the majority of what I do on it, is climbing, on the same trails that I run on. It's an absolute blast.

      I'm glad you like your mountain bikes. I personally believe the "I am not old enough for an e bike" is the wrong way of looking at it. Maybe you don't want an e bike, but age is irrelevant. Nobody says I am too young for a motocross bike. E bikes are just enough type of adrenaline sport more similar to mountain biking than motocross. Many of the young DH racers use them for training as you can get laps in when no shuttle is available. Nearly everyone has your attitude until they spend some serious time on a good e bike. I know as all of my friends said the same as you initially.

Before you know it you have new friends. Doesn't always work but often does. All the guys in this video met exactly that way.

    Awesome episode, I started riding at Woodpoo back in 96, OG carpark was way down the back towards the grove, you could ride to Muriwai and the local trails back there then, epic oldschool trails no carpet, features were like snakes and ladders by the 2000s and rickety sketchy as fk skinnies and drop off and gap jumps, real shit with real consequences, seen my fair share of helicopter rides in and out of there too! still riding still crazy! though you guys are up there! Riverhead was the mecca for the core riders and loved that place too especially when it rains, get a bit sick of sand and who doesn't like Riverhead mud.
    Muriwai has suffered the most, the old days there were awesome, but like bikes things change, sometimes for the better🤣

    I was watching one of your videos the other day, I noticed that your e-bikes aren’t limited to a ridiculous 25km/hr like they are here in Australia. Are you able to let us know how it unlock them or the way around this? Do you purchase them at the 25-35-45km speed limit in NZ at a higher cost for the 35-45?

    • @bestdayevermtb2
      @bestdayevermtb2  22 дня назад +1

      Ours cut out at 32km/hr compared to 25 in Australia. This is just down to legislation in Australia. In fact , road bikes in NZ can do 45km/hr. It is also possible to remove this restriction with various devices. These void any warranty and would be illegal in Australia but not in NZ as we have different laws. It is a bit confusing, but yes, 25 sucks.

      @BigRedCube I won't be back at Woodhill till September now. We typically ride on Sunday at 10am but rode today as I am on a flight in the morning.

    I am considering buying an ebike. I can't keep up with the young ones now.😂

      Trust me DO IT. Nearly all the guys in this video were reluctant to get e bikes including myself. They are beyond awesome.

    I'm in my late 60s love riding and would rider harder if I had better skills n wasn't gonna demolish myself.
    Nearly everyone I've met has had a reasonable crash and been injured.

      Mountain biking is an awesome sport, but everyone in that video has had injuries, including myself. My injury was so bad that I considered giving up riding. That, of course, never happened.

    Another good one. there may or may not be rumour out there that the reason you ride togther is that you have no friends and you all pay each to be each other friends, OR or might be Like minded people that like doing the same thing

      I heard that rumour, too. Nobody wants to pay me, though😂

    You will ride offroad until your first serious accident, when you learn how long it takes to heal. 50 is nothing. I'm 74 and still rising, just not offroad or in traffic. The trails shown in this video are very mild.

      Yes, the trails in this video are mild, but if you follow the channel, you will see we do double black trails also.
      We have all had surgery due to serious accidents but for some reason keep coming back for more.
      If you continue to watch the channel at some point, it will become clear why this video was made and why the trails were mild.

      Really hoping to get to Dyfi bike park in a few months. I also did a bit of BMX but was never really competitive. Some things never change.
