Yes, there is definitely a demand. Not just from the Blac community, by the way. When I was a kid, I liked having diversity, so I made sure that I would not just get the blonde barbie with blue eyes, because it would have felt like a world full of clones. I'd like it if they release more Asian too, especially Indian dolls, because I never had an Indian doll and it makes me sad.

It is so annoying when people say that boys don't play with dolls! It is also so bad that target doesn't buy black dolls. That is probably why 24k DJ, angles, and royal bee are really hard to find.

I loved to buy Bratz all the time when I was a kid, and I still remember this moment. I remember calling Sasha ugly and not cute, and wanting the lighter dolls like Cleo and Jade. I never had a actual black Bratz as a kid. I feel so ashamed of myself for having that kind of mentality back then. I love my skin color, and shout for more representation now. As a light skinned Afro-Latina myself (my dad is light skinned/white passing Latino and my mom is very clearly Afro-Latina) I struggled greatly with identity too. I went through a period where I wanted to be white SO badly and would lighten myself with hair straightening, lighter makeup, and desperately saving up for a nose job IN MIDDLE SCHOOL.
Then I wanted nothing more to be darker. I wanted my mom’s tight curls and dark eyes and beautiful skin. I thought that was what I needed to be.
Now I’m happy with me and I have a daughter of my own and I hope she grows up loving herself.

The Coronavirus had me having a great doll buying experience today! My target had all the new na na na surprise dolls, and the 11 inch dee dee candy themed hairdorables doll I have been looking for a while for! I also found the Barbie puma sets that have been so tough to find! And today is my birthday so I’m very happy..It’s sad stores think black dolls aren’t worth stocking...This really needs to stop going forward cuz I always hear little white girls asking for black dolls so there is a demand from everyone

Exactlyyy. This is the exact reason why I never asked for Barbies when I was little - they all looked the same and it was just freaky to me. I loved when my dolls all looked different, which was why I was so obsessed with Monster High. Honestly, as a kid, I wanted a doll that wasn't white so badly for such a long time, but where I am from, there weren't many POC options. The only dolls that were diverse like that were Monster High, and even that doesn't really count because they don't actually represent real people. Having different skin tones is so much more interesting, and as a person who loved (and still do love!) dolls as a child, people love diverse dolls. Mostly because children like role-playing and having different characters to give them stories, so all the dolls owned by kids usually are quite different from eachother. Just very sad to see. There is absolutely a demand for dolls of darker skin tones so the stores are really shooting themselves in the leg. Blonde white barbies just get boring after a while, which is why they were so unpopular and uninteresting in middle school for me, and I am a white girl coming from a big majority white country. :/

I 90% agree on this. I am VERY thankful that you said that kids don't automatically think they need to change looking at a doll, but I think the reason kids think they might need to change subconsciously is very remote, if that's the right word? I mean it depends where you sit basically. If you are put in the situation of people never talking about how they look or if they feel like they need to change, kids never get that image. If kids are put in the situation that has people who talk about how they look and what they want to change with their body, then yes, I think kids would think on it more.
I do understand that it's almost impossible to have kids not think about their bodies, but the chances are never zero. Stores should buy all skin toned dolls. That is true.
Please don't come for me, really just tryna get this out there in to the world lmao

I think the retailers should buy an even amount of each doll, and then continue their ordering from their based off of data. If the black dolls don't have a chance to get sold, it would make sense that less people would buy it. You can't get something the store doesn't have. So to satisfy popular demand, I feel like there should be an even playing field first before decisions like the ones made by these retailers are made.

I remember when I was little, back in the 90s, they had the "teen Skipper" line with her two friends, Courtney and Nikki. I had skipper and Courtney from the first line and tried my hardest to find the other one but never could. I remember my Nana (grandmother on mom's side) asking me what I wanted for my birthday and I told her and she was like but that's the Black doll, you don't want that one, it's for black girls. I didn't even know what she meant. Luckily my Granny (dad's mother) was more in touch with reality and she was able to track down the pearl beach Nikki and Courtney for Christmas that year.

Once when I was little, my mum told me, “honey you look beautiful today! Your hair and skin looks so bright and shiny today!” And I responded “Mommy, I’m not pretty like Caris (Caris is my British, blue eyes blond hair friend ily no homo if your reading she always told me I was amazing) or Barbie” *started crying* And that’s when my mother told me that no matter what skin color you were you were still beautiful, and that all that even mattered was your personality. (Btw before anyone asked, I’m not black I’m South Indian and brown) I believed that and I still do, anyways Story 2, once when we were lining up in First Grade I asked a new girl if she wanted to be friends, when we were interrupted by a boy in the class who said “no one will ever like you, your just a dark brown piece of poop. We only like light skinned people.” The girl stood up for me, she’s still one of my bffs to this day.

  • @krazykittymatt
    @krazykittymatt 4 года назад +3

The reason is because in the past, and I mean like the last couple years, they just didn't sell. The black dolls were always passed on and their stock would end up at the very top of the shelf as over stock. When I worked at Walmart we always had left over Black dolls of all brands and most would get sent back. Now that I work in cosmetics, and I work in several states for both Sephora and Ulta, I LOVE that there is so much inclusion and that brands are growing to want more than 5 shades. But again, deeper tones aren't ordered as much because, yes the demand is there for people of color, but they're not as purchased as much so they stay in understock and most of the time the order for them is halted til it's zero in the stock for the store so it's sent separately.
So tbf, I don't necessarily blame the store 100%. I also blame the family that doesn't show children that all the dolls of color need love and can be played with. But, yes, the demand is growing for dolls of color and brands and stores need to notice now. With Rainbow High, like everyone is saying, they NEED a deeper skintoned doll. I have all of them and the colors would pop more on dark and deep skin dolls.

The OMG dolls are really cool however MGA really needs to either stop with the surprise aspect of the OMG dolls or work on there quality control because these dolls are around 30 dollars and they have some pretty bad factory defects so either really up quality control or let you see the doll in the box before you buy so you know what your paying for

I know this is a much older video, but I still like hearing your thoughts about this community and to know more about the doll collecting community. And, I really love how you explained the start of the video towards others who don't understand why inclusive dolls that show representation matters. Because like I feel that growing up people were always like "Barbie's eyes are too big and she's too skinny" and "what message is this sending to kids?" but I was more concerned about how close I looked like to any fictional character in general. And, I remember being sad that Jasmine from Disney was the only costume I felt I could pull off because she was tan. I think there's been a lot of great progress so far with movies like Moana, Encanto, and more. But representation still matters and it's always been amazing to see a tan skinned doll like myself!

I thought that was just a thing with MGA quality, was so pissed when I opened up my busy BB, her blush was sealed into her eye (making it look diseased), the other eye had several blemishes & the denim was falling apart by the second. When I tried to return it, the store said no because it had been unboxed despite the whole point of the toy being that you can’t see it, so I had to stick it on eBay & got at least £20 of my £31 investment. This was way back in Jan/Feb so afaik Corona has nothing to do with their QC.😒

    • @Clawdeena9
      @Clawdeena9  4 года назад +2

It sounds like you experienced a very frustrating situation with your Busy BB. You have every right to feel annoyed by this quality control mishap. If in the future you buy anything MGA - they have a fairly good customer service system when it comes to replacing LOL Surprise dolls & OMG's. Stores can be hit or miss - but contacting MGA directly may prove more satisfactory?? In regards to Corona - I don't think we'll experience a heightened influx of QC errors, that actually didn't cross my mind until your comment so definitely food for thought!!! - I'd probably just be repeating what I said about corona at the 5:52 stamp lol but yeah I guess we'll see !!

I love LOL dolls tbh. I’m an 18 year old girl and when I saw the dolls of color I was dying coz they looked so pretty. I’m Mexican myself and I’ve only ever owned white dolls. And as much as I love them, they sometimes make me feel worse about myself because homegirls are so thick sometimes I can’t get their clothes off. Makes me feel shit for not having a tiny wais like em

Thank you so much for discussing this issue! It's really hard in Australia as we're forced to buy these rarer dolls from overseas sellers. In regards to Dazzle, I don't like the tinsel hair for the same reasons but I specifically don't like the plastic feeling of the lower half and how that doesn't match the finish of the top. Great video keep up the amazing work gurl!!

It says a lot that I had to buy my 24K DJ from JAPAN, which is one of the least diverse countries (with Japanese making up 98.1% of the population) and even they still got the black dolls - absolutely ridiculous! The same goes for Barbie Fashionistas as well, not just the black dolls but the handicapped ones too?

I LOVE your comments on this!! ALL children should be able to look at a store shelf and see diversity. No one should ever be so brainwashed by the blonde-hair-blue-eye-thin standard that they feel like they are anything less than perfect just because they fall outside of that 'standard'... It's sad.
Everybody is unique and there is more kinds of beautiful than just one. And yeah, if boys saw more representation in advertising then maybe they wouldn't feel ashamed to play with dolls. *I worked for a major retailer previously, and a young boy was being mocked by a parental figure for wanting an LOL winter disco ball*
There's no such thing as a 'girl toy' or a 'boy toy'
    There's just TOY.
Anybody can play with a truck, a doll, or a dinosaur or pony. Because the point is to express and imagine. Sure you can play dolls the standard way, or you can do what my little brother did with my mom's old barbies when we were Young, (he made them fight to the death for the pretend groceries)
    *Sorry so much rant, but*
    TOYS NEED DIVERSITY
    TOYS NEED TO BE EXPRESSIVE
    and
    TOYS SHOULD BE SHAMELESS~

Excuse me but Dazzle is Everythang!!! By far my top fav alongside Shadow! Looking to add Speedster & Angles of course. I've always heard that the reason for dolls of color are so hard to come by is due to "poor sales" I remember when the made to move yellow top came out it was so hard to find because apparently the same thing happened with that doll and later the same thing happened to orange top too, which is why they also end up on clearance but I feel like when they do its because by the time they get released the heat for that line dies down as well as a lot of people just aren't aware of the verity of dolls in terms of skin tone, eyes and hair. I've been to stores doll hunting recently where I come across families in the same aisle shocked & surprised to find darker dolls with Afro hair or even Asian dolls too & I'm sure that has some influence. But what has helped me a bit is going to the stores that is located in a have more prominently people of colors, like for example I was able to find the aa floral purple top mtm in the Bronx as well as the Hispanic one. I guess it's up to us as consumers to call the stores and ask for them to get these dolls and show them that there is a demand for them.

Now as far as separate boxes go... I had NO IDEA! Not surprised, but it's frustrating. I'd have thought each doll came in their box or that each box had whichever specific dolls were ordered (like at the shops I work at, which, mind you, are FAR smaller than Target, when we order things, the whole order comes in one box and it's up to uis and the owner to sort it all out).

the OMGs come in separate assortments by doll. so theres no boxes of "all but the black doll"
the black dolls do sell less, so stores arent going to order product that isnt selling as much.
The best thing to do to change this is buying them up. give them away as gifts or middleman them to people who can find them, show theres demand. pump up those sales numbers
most stores dont tend to CHOSE what they reorder, its done automatically by sales numbers.
(i work in a toy department in retail)

Stores also likely look at the aesthetic of the doll, they might even do a sort of parental panel before they choose what they order. The parents likely can be either fairly conservative or people who are considering a demographic of children that's sometimes have varying disabilities. Angle is little crazy looking, personally not in a bad way, but some people may see it as something they might not want to buy their children even if they're black.

I'm black and moved to rural town. Lemme tell you... doll shopping here is a headache. The stores here cater to the demographics of the area. The black/brown dolls ocassionally are marked down and eventually placed on clearance. But the LOL OMG dolls SELLOUT everytime they are put on the shelves. The store orders ALL the skin tones because they know they'll make that cash.

This point I have nowhere else to look at besides white online? I find it totally unacceptable ! Especially when I use these dolls more for the body than the actual head because I like to swap them onto my Bratz ! But now I actually like repaint lol dolls so I need them all and I can’t get them all if one is excluded in stores :( it’s lame as shit and hopefully these stores try and come around to purchasing ! Here’s my problem with the black doll in a separate box thing once stores realize how many people want the dolls they buy more than they need but by the time they do that everyone who really wanted the doll already got her online which causes them to sit on shelves for months at a time which leads to the darker skinned dolls ( especially if they have 4c hair ) going on clearance sooner than there lighter skinned counter parts

I feel like someone earned stink-eye if all the dolls are sold together EXCEPT the black doll. Each doll should be in a lot to its own so the stores can easily cater to their local demographics.
Pockets of dense, single-race populations can be found all over the US - we have a pretty dense population of Czech folk nearby. This is how we get Chinatowns and Little Koreas and whatever. To some extent, retailers do have to cater to the nearby population and their wants, but as I can testify from my adventures in trying to find a Jade doll when Bratz was first coming out: retailers *don't want to order according to customer request*. They just say "It's what corporate sent us" and ignore the people who actually shop there, and that is a GIANT hell no. Corporate off in middle America does not know local store demographics; they should leave things like this to people who know what their shopper base looks like.
