Definitely needs a little slack, my 2020 S1K had a slip issue due to that and as soon as I adjusted and added that small amount of slack I haven’t had a issue since
You guys are absolutely right! I just, litterally just pulled the bike out and adjusted the cable at the bottom end to give it some slack. Not slop, slack 😎
That inner basket is scrap my friend, that's where the springs have dug in. Likely will drop straight in the grooves and hinder spring movement. That inner basket has got to go
Hey CJ, love the videos man! Always check adjustment first and set lever freeplay. But im almost positive the damper spring or "coned ring" is backwards, the last friction plate isnt offset, and both hub and basket have gnarly grooves. Which can eventually make your clutch feel clunky. And will get progressively get worse. Cheers buddy!
My Son just put a Kevlar Barnett Clutching my 1980 Cb900c. It’s wonderful, smooth and engaging ! No more worries here. My Son has had very good luck with Barnett , so many people give positive reviews. We think they are perfect. Good luck it’s not a major job.
10:18 The grooves in the clutch basket exacerbate wear on the clutch. You can file down the grooves with a fine file to save money but down the line your gonna have to replace the basket for who knows how much
I'm loving your videos. But this clutch basket is absolutely done.Clutch springs have made pretty bad digging. Keep it up and much love from Bulgaria. Can't wait to see that Aprilia beast finished 🏍️🏍️🏍️
I agree with the comments that others have said that the inner basket should be replaced as well as the cable be adjusted so the cable has freeplay instead of tight like you have it. Also i have seen you use standard engine oils in the past. You want to make sure you always use motorcycle specific oil (like you are now) as it has the proper friction and dispersion modifiers to deal with a wet clutch. Your videos are very well done. Keep up the great work.
I am from Germany. I love your videos, keep it up And my clutch looks just like your old one. And you could have driven this one even further. The coloring is quite normal. You should have just turned the clutch pedal pin further out, or further in, so that the clutch closes further.
I'd bet that the "spring ring" (or as the manual calls it "cushion spring") should go the opposite way with concave surface to the outside, towards your face when you're installing it.
Great video , it's better to offset the last friction plate to the rest of stack to distribute the stress on the clutch and help lessen the noise , it won't harm the clutch but if you look when you took the cover off the last friction plate was offset from the rest , I've seem many of these from the factory without the last one offset so there's no harm but it does help if you do , they state it in the manual but I've seen a few that are all lined up on stock clutches now for some reason . 👍🏼👌🏼
Man oh man that carbon looks so good. Dream bike. I'm trying to keep 20 year old 954 Blade similar like You, attention to details and content is on point, please keep them comming! Love it!
At 4:25 it looks like there could be some ridges worn into the inside of clutch basket. This could cause the plates to hang-up ever so slightly. You would feel it will your finger.
there's two side on each iron plate, you can feel the difference by hand rubbing against it, put them back the way factory does or it will fuck up your friction plate real fast, also swap out the friction plate with new one and swap the basket too if you want to be worry free for your future ride or do some clutch up wheelies
Don’t know if happened to you but my clutch also burned and first thing I noticed was the pressure bolts were to tight, probably clutch was rebuilt and person who did it cranked those bad boys all the way. Plates probably were not disengaging properly leading to excessive heat and a snapped cable.
Awesome video by the way, i would recommend getting a smaller In-lb torque wrench for those 6mm and 8mm thread bolts!! Thats more suited for what you need as the bigger one isnt small enough.
The last friction plate you fitted (on the outside) was not located in the correct channel in the basket, it should have been offset 1 channel compared to the other friction plates. You can see a witness mark where the original plate sat. The last plate is always offset compared to the rest of the plates. Check your manual. You should have more freeplay in the cable too or clutch will slip.
@@CJMediaOfficial I think it’s to distribute the stress of the first plate in the basket as it’s the first one to engage. Also reduce chatter and noise.
my curiosity, why the clutch cable was deem functional? because at first I thought it might have bedded in and stuck? 🤔 but again thanks for sharing its very eductional!
Hi CJ, nice work man......strange that the discs were burned. Maybe someone previously changed them ...by the way, I highly recommend a quick shifter, bidirecional for sure. Can´t wait to see the next one. Cheers!
Get a complete suter clutch kit...cause the basket is trash. Also add an auto blipper you will see big difference in riding.... Will also feel like wsbk rider😜 (By the way may i suggest to remove the front flapper with motor and add a carbon fiber fairing stay which comes as complete kit with biger ram air carbon tube)
The clutch being worn out and slipping is fair enough, but no matter how worn the clutch is the lever should always have spring pressure behind it, where as in your video it wouldn't return... So you have other issues. From the looks of the basket wear I would say the plates got caught in the groves and when you released the lever the springs couldn't compress the stack again as it was stuck and the lever went loose.
was looking for this comment. At least someone knows what theyre talking about. Videos like this are dangerous cause people will watch and install wrong.
Don't know if it's a big deal... but I think you've made a mistake... Please check. Removing the parts, the last 3 were in this order conical ring, friction plate, flat ring. Installing you place friction plate first then flat ring and then conical ring.
I've seen on Mt-07 that they line up the things that stay out, the first friction plate on 6 and 12 o;clock, then on 3 and 9, then 6 and 12 and so on, idk if its only on mt-07
What a disaster i'm dealing with. I'm restoring a 1993 CBR600F2 and i ordered a fairing kit from MFS-Motor. It showed up the other day and first of all i have to fit the headlight. The mounting inserts are 5mm to close and two of the inserts have threads sticking up that are too short! The mounting area for the turn signals are at least 4mm too low and off by the same amount. What a mess. Have you ever had problems with things like this with your vendor?
Hey CJ those markings on your clutch basket you're going to need a new clutch basket soon those markings are not good news also I wanted to ask you are you familiar with LoJack
Wow, rarely see a clutch that hammered. Something tells me that bike was rode hard and put away wet in it's prior life!🤔Clutch basket itself looks pretty tired, would change it.
With stock rear links I see there, is there a reason you placed the triple trees so low on front forks? Genuine question, intent and tone is hard to relay in text.
nothing wrong with those clutch plates, they are obviously gunna get heat marks on them! old clutch looked very dry when you removed it, did you check the oil level?! and dont use the quickshifter when your going so slow, thats the fastest way to wreck your gearbox!

Your clutch damper spring “conical spring” is installed incorrectly. It should look concave facing outwards. See service manual. However, this did not cause your clutch failure. As previously mentioned, there’s a high probability your clutch cable was adjusted incorrectly. Too tight. Cheers!
According to page 5-62 in the service manual, suggest other wise. Yamaha made it apparent to the reader by exploding the view of the damper spring and its seat that he indeed installed it correctly. This means the "cone" faces inwards not out. Think about it, Yamaha would label it as a "convex spring" if it faced outwards. You may be confused with conical spring washer for the main axle.
The clutch cable needs to have some slack to allow the clutch to fully engage. If there is no free play, the clutch will wear out quickly.
i learned that the hard way it wear out in 2 days
