"Opa" means "grandpa" in Indonesian (a loan word from Dutch), and "Oppa" means "big brother" in Korean. I was already in the university when K-Pop boomed in Indonesia and I started hearing Indonesian girls calling Korean male idols "Oppa". I knew "Oppa" means "big brother", but it was still funny to me because it sounded as if those young men were referred to as "grandpa"

We call the grandfather "Opa" in Germany to. The grandmother is called "Oma". But both is pronounced a little different, longer and with the focus in the a.
Traditionally Dutch grandparents would be called Pake and Beppe, but I call mine Opa and Oma.

hi deli! indonesian here! just if you want to pronounce dewi’s name a little bit better, it’s pronounced as “de-wee” (“day-wee” but kinda eliminate the y in the pronunciation) it’s actually just like you pronounce your name deli! deli & dewi:) and btw dewi means goddess! so your dewi is a rebellious goddess i must say :>
and u pronounced budi and opa correctly already! but just fyi for understanding indonesian’s pronounciations, budi: “bu-dee” (“boo-dee”), and opa: “o-pa”. you have to pronounce it more clear and exact to the actual letter:)

It's funny to me that these few words are so similar to german. As you describe it, we would pronounce Dewi the same, Opa means grandpa in german and Budi would also be pronounced this way. That's probably as far as the similarities go (or maybe theres some dark past to those similarities, although I hope not) but it's cool that I know that Opa is also indonesian :)
@@melinaalba63 I think Indonesia was colonized by Germany, maybe one of the reasons why it sounds similar, Indonesia itself is not a native or local language, it's more like the national language for one tribe to communicate to another because Indonesia had more than 200 languages and tribe, so Indonesian language has a lot of word that came from another language, native Indonesian or other countries.
@mariealba4158 we were colonised by the Dutch so we have a lot of Dutch loan words! And when I learnt German in high school, that also results in similarities with German😅 I called my grandparents Opa and Oma growing up 😊

We Indonesians got it from Dutch. But most people don’t call our grandfather Opa, just probably fancier people do lol.

Opa is the exact word for grandpa in Dutch! The O will be pronounced longer as if you'd say Ooooo when curious🤗

I'm indonesian and it brings me so much joy to see your new let's play is inspired by our culture. 'Opa' is indeed the right word to refer to grandpa. We do have other terminologies like 'Mbah' in my local culture, but i think Opa is great too don't worry. You use Budi as well for the name, it's like the most quintessential indonesian names ever it's amazing. Already expecting great things from Mas Budi *we call older male in indonesia 'Mas' in some indonesian culture here. it's like calling 'Brother Budi'. I have to say the amount of unadulterated joy that i've felt seeing a rice cooker in the sims game is absolutely ridiculous but at the same time it's just feels nice to be represented. Now the build will really feels like home for me, a genuine indonesian home *with the squat toilet and all*. I'm excited for this let's play Deli! it looks great already

Just thought I'd remind you that not every culture finds tattoos rebellious and sometimes people get tattoos for good luck and to build or celebrate their culture and family as well! Maybe that could be a storyline you could pursue?
i believe tattoos are generally frowned upon in indonesia, of course locally it could differ but as a general thing it seems to not be super accepted in indonesia
I feel like that's a very 'Sulani' thing in the world of Sims. Like it feels right for my Sulani characters to have cultural tattoos l. Am currently playing a family there and Grandpa and his adult son both have tattoos and when the toddler in the family turns into a teen, he probably will to.

I noticed the "sul-Sul de kah" in the world description was really smart because to say Hello in Thai its "sawadeeka" haha!!
Opa is from Dutch but bc of the Dutch colonisation of Indonesia you see that in some regions (mostly east like maluku, Papua, Banda Timor leste) they use Opa and other Dutch words! Just like how in Holland we use quite some old bahasa

"Opa" is grandpa in Dutch, and as Indonesia used to be a Dutch colony, that's probably where it came from. "Oma" is grandma.

Opa is Dutch for grandpa. If the same term is used in Indonesia, I suspect a link in colonial times. But am realy curious how exactly it is used in Indonesian. Sinds opa is relatively new in Dutch and does'nt seem to make al lot of sense linguisticly

The one thing that really annoys me with the Sims team is when they don't give us a wall swatch to match with the floor tiles. Or counters without matching overhead cabinets, or fences without matching gates, or when the swatch colours of cabinets and counters don't really match. Like, come on, how hard is that really? Just take out some of the useless shells (ugh 🙄 ) around the world and give us matching swatches.
I really really want matching tiles for bathroom showers, flooring and walls!

fun fact: opa is also a word we use in dutch for grandfather!! it’s not the official word for it, but opa’s used way more than the actual word, or at least in belgium it is :) so it’s probably used in other languages like indonesian aswell!!

Opa is Grandfather in Dutch and German. My Grandpa was Opa and my Grandma was Oma, they both came over to Australia from Holland.
