Superb setup and breakdown. Warmer tones/gels/reflectors tend to look great on black skin; you picked the right colour temperatures on that front. Thanks for sharing your experience 🙏🏾✨️
His work is amazing! You absolutely can light darker skin beautifully with daylight temp, but in my opinion it’s easier to do so with warmer light. Appreciate you watching!!
Really enjoy that last term, 'similar to 3 point lighting' but expanding it. Never really thought about it that way. Another fantastic video by the talented Carsten. Your videos are starting to become consistent in my filmmakers viewing circle, keep at it boss man.
Glad you liked it! And that really is all it is! Everything is just 3 point lighting made bigger. And dude, thank you. It means a ton you watch my vids. Appreciate you big time!
Fantastic; never envisioned lighting like that from outside. the BTS seeing the "sunrise" in an instant into that house was thought provoking and inspiring. Make this onsite set feel full production
Great breakdown!! "3 point lighting, just made bigger"! That REALLY makes it not feel so overwhelming. Thanks for that!!!!! You just earned another subscriber.
That makes me so happy to hear! It was (and still is) super overwhelming for me, and breaking it down like that for me changed everything. Appreciate you!!
Just found this channel on my recommended. Huge fan of the way you shoot and approach everything, also learned a lot on this one 🙏🏻. Looking forward to more 🤘🏻
Thank you man!! I used pretty much the same workflow I used in my video “get the film look easy”. Feel free to check that out! I’ll also probably talk more about this grade specifically when I do the whole project breakdown vid. Appreciate you!!
Very interested in seeing the final deliverable of this commercial to see how these shots cut together with sound. Really love seeing people implement the spotlight attachment like that since rigging overhead ambient is such a pain!
It will be coming out in a few weeks along with a more in-depth breakdown of the whole spot! And same, it’s so much easier then rigging a room tone rig. Appreciate you watching Dylan!!
Thanks brotha! Looking at all lighting setups as just expanded three point lighting has helped me so much, so I'm glad you found it useful as well! Appreciate you!
Thank you for bringing this to us. I just learned so much by watching this video. It's also good to see film lighting video of dark skinned subjects which I film the most. You definitely get a sub. Please keep them coming...Also which lens did you use?
Thanks man! So I would normally use neg but because our talent had a darker skin tone we didn’t end up needing it for the look we were trying to achieve! Appreciate you!
@@carstenschlag I have darker skin myself. That's good to know! Thanks! Last question and I'll leave you alone. Did you rent the lights through a grip guy, or do you actually own all 50 tons of that gear? 😂
Haha ask me as many questions as you want! that's what Im here for! And nah I def do not own all that stuff lol. I don't have that kind of money. It was either rented or borrowed from a gaffer friend of mine and a production house.
@@carstenschlag Fantastic! That give me hope too 😂. I don't have the money to throw at a bunch of lights like this. But I definitely wanna do more creative setups.
Haha yeah I feel that. This wasn’t actually too crazy of a large rental budget. I think I spent like $250 total to rent everything. So it is possible to do it for cheap ( you could also probably do it cheeper) just gotta make some good connections!
Yo Blake!! Haha appreciate it, it’s my favorite running hat. And yeah about half the fixtures were mine and the others were rented from a gaffer I’m friends with. Appreciate you watching!
I do that a lot myself! It really depends on how budget minded you are. But I would say having one point source light ( like the amaran 200x) and one 4ft tube (like the Pavo tubes or godox tubes). Then plan your shots around what the sun is doing and let the sun give your room ambiance and then use your lights to give some hard accents and key/ wrap your talent and you can get a pretty similar look! only downside is if the sun changes you're kinda fucked ! so make sure you work fast lol. Appreciate you!!
Its the full color version, Which personally I now only buy full color lights just because I find them more useful for the jobs I do. I will say though I only use the color features maybe 20% of the time. So If you have a good deal on the bi-color one, maybe pull the trigger on it! the Pavo slim is literally my favorite and most used light I own so I can't recommend it enough. Appreciate you watching !!
Glad you liked it! I was a blackmagic shooter up until about a month ago I made the switch. Noting wrong with the blackmagic , honestly i really loved it. but doing RUclips now, fx3 makes my life so much easier lol. Appreciate you watching!!
I don't really wanna be that guy but be very carefull with the 1200d and the original spotlight mount, it was only designed for 300 watts of power so there is a good chance you are either frying your light or your spotlight mount. 600x and 600d are fine by most cases but if you go full bore with a 1200d you might shorten the lights life
Haha no sweat, I appreciate it! I did know it wasn’t rated for the 1200 but it was my spotlight mount so if it broke I was okay with it. It was more important for me to get the shot. Hopefully I’ll have access to a spotlight mount max in the future. Really appreciate you watching!
I love this and the approachable explanation of "this is essentially 3-point lighting expanded."
Thanks man! Appreciate you !
Superb setup and breakdown. Warmer tones/gels/reflectors tend to look great on black skin; you picked the right colour temperatures on that front. Thanks for sharing your experience 🙏🏾✨️
Thank you! Yeah definitely happy I went with warmer light. Really appreciate you watching!!
Right! But I think you should see Vuhlandes videos. They look amazing and he uses daylight, which works great with black skin

Commercial looks sick! It’s cool to see the process like this
Aye thanks man! I appreciate you!
This was so dope. The 1200d technique made a big difference. The color temperature was an awesome choice for his complexion.
Thanks man! 1200d technique is probably one of my most used! Appreciate you!!
You sir just earned a sub. Nice breakdown. Great to see different DPs approach a scene with there own style and taste

Thank you bro! Appreciate you!!
Great breakdown !!! Maybe I missed it, so I'll just ask, what was the Camera's white balance ?
Thank you Rania! The white balance was set to 5600 to really bring out the the warmth of the 3200k lights. Really appreciate you watching !!

I'm an indie filmmaker who usually works as a one-man crew. What budget-minded essentials can I use for a basic setup on indoor shoots?
I do that a lot myself! It really depends on how budget minded you are. But I would say having one point source light ( like the amaran 200x) and one 4ft tube (like the Pavo tubes or godox tubes). Is that the Pavo slim bicolor or color? I see a used bicolor one for $300. Such a steal, but I know it lacks a ton of features the full color unit has

Hey Carsten! Great video. Did you balance camera at 3200 or did you balance around 4500 to 5000 for warmth purposes?
Thanks Jackie! White balance was set to 5600 in cam and lights were at 3200k which gave the warmth. Appreciate you watching!

cool breakdown, what lenses were you using?
Thanks Quason! We used the Sony g-master 24-70 mark 1. Appreciate you watching!
