My kid's bathroom sink started making that noise tonight. We have never messed with the shut off valve so it has been in the position since we moved in. It hasn't made the noise in the 4 years we've lived here I turned the shut off valve open three turns and viola no more noise! I am so thankful for this video and the fact that it was such an easy fix!
I have been watching this show since I was in elementary school (the early 80’s). This video just saved me a costly plumbing bill at my salon. Thank you.
Ever since I was about five years old, I've enjoyed this show. In the early 1990's I watched it with my dad on WGBH Boston, and now here I am watching it on my computer 30 years later. You're always so professional while also explaining things in layman's terms. These shows leave me feeling like many projects aren't so far out of reach for my skill level, and you're always honest when they are. I'm very glad to see that you guys are still at-and as popular as ever-after all these years!
Replaced a wax ring around my toilet. Reconnected the line and got the hammering. All I did was run the faucet and the shower in the same bathroom for a few minutes. Fixed! Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I had a plumber come to my house last week and he said that noise is due to blockage in the pipe and it will be a $900 job. Glad I saw this video.
Wow. THANK YOU - I've been dealing with this exact issue with our bathroom faucet and been putting it off for weeks because I assumed I had to fix a washer. All I had to do was open the valve a few twists. YAY
Thank you! 2.5 months in a summer beach rental and I couldn't take it any longer. Astonished that I only needed to open the valves fully. You guys rock!
Well. Learn something every time I watch you guys. This has been going on for a few years in this place; previous owners had done exactly this. Your fix was all it took! Thanks!
I just changed the faucet in the kitchen sink at my house and the hot water started doing this same problem, thanks to this video advice the problem is fixed now.
This is the best; it solved my toilet problem. I have tried the arrestor and the shut down main to let air out; none worked. From this video, it suggests that I either have a faulty angle stop (bad washer or tape), or the flash valve washer. And it also said the angle stop supposed to be all the way open. So I followed the instruction and replacing the flash valve first. If it doesn't work, I will replace the angle stop. Wow - right after the flash valve replacement, I could open up the angle stop to full without hearing any noise! So this video solved my problem. One thing I learned was, it was impossible to find the replacement washer to the american standard flash valve that came with the toilet; so I have to replace the entire valve. Although only $15 but it feels really bad throwing the entire valve out for not able to find a $.50 washer. Anyway, great video. i am a fan!!
You just made me a quick 100 I'm a service plumber. Thank you this would have been the last thing I would have thought cause this same issue. I'm more concerned of the plumber who decided not to fully open the shut off
you can replace the areator to a lower flow. they sell universal ones for $5 at the hardware store in 0.5, 1.2, 1.5, and 2.2 glm which will uslaly reduce the flow and can make your faucet quieter.
Hello, I have the same problem but from my hot water pipe. After watching this video, I checked my valves and then fully opened them both (my valves are quarter-turn valves), but the problem is still there, I still heard the hammer noise when I opened the hot water. Please tell me either there are other problems that causes hammer noise. Thank you for making this video! And thank you for your help!
Im in a camper trailer it happens with kitchen, and bathroom sink not so much with the tub,,an only on the hot water side,,,so anyway this video gave me a better understanding and idea where to look at least thx!
Those ball valves can scour out over time and become impossible to shut off (or open all the way) after just a few years. I still like them better than gate valves, though, which I've had fail (i.e. cannot shut water off when needed) a number of times. Or the old multi-turn valves as shown in the video that frequently leaked (a lot) whenever you started to move them!
He always brings every possible part with cutaways to the job. That level of dedication is why he's a star & why millions of homeowners mob him on the street for an autograph or just to feel his aura.
Hi guys, what if all the tap in the house makes that noise. Can't seem to fix it. One moment is good and again its same. I live in UK. Anything i can do to fix this? FYI: we have turned off entire water when we went to vacation three weeks ago.
A lot off knowlegde there i think. I have water hammer when i open the cold water handle. Not when closing. Only when opening. I have installed a water hammer arrestor. Nobody knows where its coming from. Hope you have the wright answer!
Question, I have this problem in one of my faucet but not the other faucet. Both faucets were partially opened/closed, but only 1 faucet was having this vibration problem. Why is that?
My mom keeps doing that to the garden hose faucets because the pressure is too high and it would kill her plants; I always hear the pipes vibrate near there from inside and outside the house
You don't throttle water with a ball valve!!!, needle valves are made for that. And its called a diaphragm not a o-ring or gasket in a flush valve. Other than that it's a helpful video
How about (drumroll) You don't open your sink faucet all the way so you you won't have as much flow and pressure and won't splash?? WOW there's an idea!!!!

It's 2020 and we're still running into the same issue and marveling at how easy it is to fix.

Wait a second. If he didn't know what the problem was, how did he have that cut open demonstration ready ahead of time? BALLS!
+Blaine Bugaski This is a video to demonstrate the problem and how to resolve it. I'm pretty sure they both knew what the problem was and were acting.
He always brings every possible part with cutaways to the job. That level of dedication is why he's a star & why millions of homeowners mob him on the street for an autograph or just to feel his aura.
wisdom4life No way they are acting. Absolutely no way.
@@davy1972 it's real life in this video and other videos
@@stephensnell1379 I was being sarcastic. These videos are always very helpful, though.

I could have sworn I already checked that...oh well, at least it's fixed now.
Hello, I started hearing that same noise but from my shower and only when I turn on the hot water... what can I do there?? Please help! Thanks
Thanks a million!
Wish my plumber would bring cutaways of every plumbing fixture in my house for demonstration purposes.
Awesome... thank you
Hey I got a idea how about you turn the water off a little then it won't splash you
Can that also cause it make a squeaky noise? And reduced water flow?
That type of kitchen tap probably has the ability to use flow limiters right in the faucet head itself.
What if it vibrates when you turn the sink all the way up on cold and hot?
I tried it but it's still hammering. It worked for a little bit then came back! :( I will try again and see what happens!

JC L it is called 'WATER HAMMER'
My mom keeps doing that to the garden hose faucets because the pressure is too high and it would kill her plants; I always hear the pipes vibrate near there from inside and outside the house
it's "Hammer Time"
So how do you fix a squeaking faucet handle?
Roger and Tom have mustaches
I just had the same problem and went under the sink and opened the hot water valve and it stopped making that noice.
You don't throttle water with a ball valve!!!, needle valves are made for that. And its called a diaphragm not a o-ring or gasket in a flush valve. Other than that it's a helpful video
A-10 'Faucet'
Five Months?! Wow.

@225 who else got mad that he didn't twist the 3rd time to open firmly and all the way. Idk why it got to me. Hehe.
Been living with this irritating noise for 4 years and I just needed to open the valve more… 🤦🏼♂️
hey im the 1200th like, was at 1.1K then my like changed it to 1.2K
So convenient that he had a cut away of the exact issue.
sucks that everything is different cause I have this problem but not this simple fix.
5 months?
I was taught to never use a ball valve as a throttling valve?
