This is the same setup I have on my shoalie but I put the battery into the front hatch that I cut out. I do recommend the extended tiller handle with the "jointed" connection. I can steer from a forward facing position with the tiller handle setting beside me.
@@WadeHarrison i Run the cables through the hull and drilled the center of the access hatch lid for a trolling plug receptacle. I run the tiller handle through a loop on my seat and it sets beside me for easy access. Next summer I may do a PWM and foot steering but I have not decided yet.
Good to read this. I'm thinking about doing the same with my Shoalie. I'd like to run a 55lb thrust and use extension handle with the u - joint. Good idea putting the handle through the area on the seat too. Thanks for the ideas.
I have a Shoalie too and I was thinking about getting this motor. If I do, I think I'll get the handle extension and also get the universal joint for it to make it easier on my back. I paddle most the time, but I also want to run a motor on small lakes to save time.
Exactly this was a test to see if it was going to work with this setup and totally agree I’m 80% paddling but those times we put in at a boat dock and the spots I want are like 2 miles flat water in head winds other side the lake where the river comes in that why I want a small little motor
It’s not bad given on something like this will use it to get spot to spot if had to do this for hours yeah it would be a nightmare but short jumps here and there it’s not to bad and fyi I’m looking at the foot steering setup next
Mine did not have inserts back there don’t know if the others do but I drilled out and put 3” 1/4 20 screws with washers and lock nuts and washers on the bottom it’s a very tight fit because of the step down design but made it work
How did you get it in a bundle?? I paid 99 for the mount, 199 for the 55lb motor and had to buy a power pole mount for 120 then the 12v 60ah lithium battery for 268! Still way cheaper then the newport180, bixpy, and torqueedo
@@jeremypeterson7384 I just bought each one separately the mount I had on another boat and the battery i ordered and the motor I ordered the cooler I got with my K craft all I was pretty happy with I want to setup the foot steering and up and down lift that’s a project for later but pretty affordable compared to a lot set up

Thanks for the video. Newport recommends to only use lead acid batteries with their kayak trolls due to possible problems with li-ion. Have you noticed any problems? Am concerned about long term problems.
Oh that’s very interesting I have not seen that and I have used it few times now and each time has been hours and have not seen any issues no way I’m using lead acid with this so time will tell
I really want one of these, but since Newport says they are designed for lead acid batteries (which I can't lift), I'm sitting on the fence about it. This is from their website "All Newport trolling motors are designed to be used with Lead-Acid style Deep Cycle or Marine batteries (Flooded, SLA, AGM or Gel). The use of Lithium batteries is not recommended and won't be compatible with some of the features offered on our motors. For more information, please read our post Lithium Batteries With Trolling Motors?" I'm pretty sure these days that most people are using lithium batteries though, I'm just worried about voiding a warranty.
At the price these sell for I’m good using whatever on them I don’t understand why they only want lead acid batteries I’m going to be using a lifepo4 and have been useing it and seems to be going just fine
I'm going to get one anyway, the thing is to not run them at full power for long distances, evidently without a battery management system to regulate the voltage, at full power lithium batteries put out more power than lead acid which can cause the motor to overheat which will damage it. The features that aren't compatible that Newport is talking about (when using a lithium battery) is the battery power level metering system because of how the batteries get depleted, I guess lead acid will show a gradual decline and lithium will pretty much show full power until there is none, lol. Anyway, thanks for taking the effort and making the video, I'll probably buy your exact setup. Except I'll be running it on a paddleboard, haha.
Just ordered mine today @ Amazon on sale $109.00 / they also mentioned it could work with both ( led acid & lithium batteries) there’s people using them for years , no problem.
Why didn't you show how to tilt motor up for shallow water? I'm sure you thought of some way to do it. I turn mine to the side. It has a double arm kind of cantilever.pull rope to raise or lower.
Wade, thanks for the review, great job as always. couple questions. 1. what is your favorite app for measuring gps speed on the water for your phone? 2. Have you seen or tried this motor on a CK1 Venture ( and I apologize if you did and I overlooked the video).. Thanks, Scott
@@ADKMuskyFoolonFly63 I have 2 CK1 Ventures and decided to go with the Newport Vessels 55 lbs motors for both. I must say, this motor pushes those kayaks along quite well! I put a piece of 1” solid wood on the transom to give the motor mount grips more security. It’s primitive but it works really well. Of course it’s a lot cheaper than installing a motor mount. Also I have the extension handles ‘with the knuckle’ which especially helps with steering. Way better than the straight extension with no knucle! Worth the extra money for sure! Anyway, i hope this is helpful. And I hope you have some great times on the water with your CK1!
@paulearle5361 I have a Shoalie and I'm thinking about going this same route and using a handle with the knuckle in it. I was curious if it made it a lot easier. How well do you like yours with the knuckle and do you have any problems?
I used it out for a full day few time and still had juice i never actually went out and just ran it out. Most of the lakes I fish in NC and SC are not super big. So few miles each trip out is about all I use this for and seems to be just fine.
everybody keeps saying super simple or very simple. No it is not. Most kayaks don't have that dry storage in the back that I have seen especially all the fishing ones. I have a catch 100 classic I don't have that. So that would mean I have to cut a hole there I don't have the material for that. If I could get that transom, which is already in my cart lol, I would have to figure out a way to cut in it and then screw this in. I hate when people take what they are good at doing and make it sound so simple. You did a fantastic job with this, you could of bought a longer tiller and maybe it might have been a little easier to steer it. Awesome video widh you was near me to help me lol I have a the trolling motor as well. Question, do I need the screws or does it come with the screws?
Yeah the shoalie had a mounting spot for a power pole or motor so I get it that it’s easier. And easy setup is definitely subjective term like Tom Brady will say a 60yard pass is simple 😂 and the handle I got was cheap I want to rig up foot steering at some point so got that to use until I do.
@@WadeHarrison I don't have that back dry box section you have so that would be hard for me to install that transom mount. The price and really thought 36 is fine for general kayak use. I never really thought needed more this has worked perfectly for what I use it for..
