As a fellow obsessive fan of The Truman Show, there is one specific line and detail that sticks with me even now. "How can he sail, he sells insurance!" When paired later with the line "You never had a camera in my head." It really paints how even us, the audience, don't actually know anything about Truman. He's already digging an escape hole with his trowel in the first few minutes, he's messing with the globe-radio to try and get into the transmissions. He's not an actor, he's a thinking breathing human who exists off screen. Literally the only moment in the film Truman isn't on camera (literally or in-universe) is when he escapes the basement, then reappears in the boat. Everyone thought Truman was afraid of the water, even the producers, even us. We have no idea at what point he learned how to sail, because there is no camera in his head. He might have never been afraid of the water, we only believe it because the movie told us Truman's feelings with authority. But we don't know, and we'll never know, and maybe we SHOULDN'T no. There are no cameras in people's heads.
There are no cameras in people's heads YET. Considering we're already wiring electronics to our brains, it's on the horizon. But yes, excellent analysis of the movie.
Close, but Truman doesn't shill anything. He is actually surrounded by social media influencers guiding him and viewers down a path of predictable consumerism upon which the economy of Seahaven relies, and he begins to question the veracity of such an environment.
Remember that saying about social media platform serving ads to people? ”If the product is free then YOU are the product." That episode of your podcast really reminds me of that.
I dont think "a film like the truman show could be made today" in the sense of the film's particular themes and approach. The film isnt just exploring a concept, its introducing it to the audience. The movie is structured in such a way that after the introduction of the premise, instead of focusing on that idea of celebrity from an obvious and direct spproach, you're given the experince of truman's life. Of the creeping impossible sense of pressure and horror that living in this world creates. Only after the film delivers that emotional experience of skepticism, paranoia, and desperation are you reminded what is creating that experience. Only after watching the viscera of Truman's life are you shown the metaphorical knife that caused it. The truman show so edfectively explores these anachronistically modern seeming themes and ideas because the ideas it was exploring were niche at the time. the film puts in lots of work to expose you to and immerse you in its ideas because it expects them to be alien to you. When instead thoee ideas are familiar, this work's impact is increased. Truman's growing frustrations throughout the film at how targeted his life is at his personal experiences, how artificial everything feels, and how desperate everyone seems for his attention. This experince the film portrays as the consequence of its premise, is by consequence of its speculative nature, resonant with an experince the film never could have predicted would become common, with the modern reccomendation driven internet, and pressure to engage with social media. A film that explores these themes so intimately, and with the approach of the Truman Show wouldnt come to exist today, because the particular techniques that make the Truman show so strong wouldn't be seen as necessary for a modern audience. And the film's approach to its ideas as those of an exteeme, in some way impossible world change its approach in a way a film that dealt with those themes as more connected to reality would not be changed. That said, I dont see it as impossible that another speculative fiction film made today could provide some insight into the world people in the future experience by the unintentional pairing of great writing and luck when it comes to the circumstances of the future. And in terms of simple quality of film making and devotion to concept, I think plenty of films similar to the Truman show have come out since that film's original release.
For my own part, I distinctly remember "The Truman Show" as fitting in alongside "The Matrix", of the full nature of reality being concealed behind an elaborate artifice. One of my mom's friends compared it with the original iteration of "The Prisoner", not just in terms of style (which was pretty obvious), but also in terms of being trapped against your will in a community that had been carefully designed to be "perfect," but only if you didn't look too closely at the details. The science fiction aspect of the piece was very front and center at the time. Nowhere in the conversation was the idea that so much of our lives would be lived through computers that could so easily track us or tabulate our reactions.
The biggest "overlooked detail" about the movie is that Truman "knows" about the outside world. Like, if he was BORN and RAISED in the town, then he's cut off from any and all information from the outside world. He should NOT know about "europe" or even "america" if the people running the show simply did not make it part of his pretend school curriculum. There's a travel agency in the town with a picture for an airplane. Why? Just tell him "people can't fly" if he ever asks. There's 100% no reason to let him know any of the stuff that would make him want to go away (except for natural human curiosity). But KNOWLEDGE about the outside world can simply be denied from him.
I suspect they didn't do that because if he was too ignorant of the real world, he would stop being relatable to the audience. Plus, it prevents potential slip-ups from cast members casually referencing real world things in conversation that he should otherwise know about, which could freak him out. Like, imagine if someone told you that we can easily visit other dimensions, and random people just do so regularly for fun, and somehow nobody told you until now. You'd probably think you went crazy.
That makes things needlessly complicated. They'd have to write a history that's not their own, and make it fluid. They also would guarantee that they always stayed in one place and the show definitely evolved over time.
Just found this miniseries, and I have to say: I absolutely love how the artist in the description drew your avatar. It's like a happy medium between Piemations and Edd Gould (may he rest in peace). Keep up the good work-can't wait to binge the entire thing once it's finished. 👍
the truman show could definitely be made today, but about "family blogging channels" taken to the extreme (and it's already sooo bad). if it were instead made today with everything the same, i think people wouldn't like it as much (they'd call it "a little too on the nose")
When Truman asks, "Was nothing real?", he is told "You were real." But I don't think he was his real self. He wasn't allowed to live his life freely. Everything was set up.
As for your final question I'd say yes plenty of black mirror episodes got close now the focused is far more on the social media. So they did try to get there and you may end up with something a little more hamfisted in the end. I think it could be done today. Now would it be as good as The Truman show ? Probably not.
Loving this series! And "could Truman show be made today" yes! I would watch an entire show about the actors and the people working behind the scenes of the Truman show! It's so interesting!
crazy how i absent mindedly clicked on a truman show video before realizing that it's you! you used to live with a good friend of mine and years back during the university years I used to see you about when I was hanging with her! cant believe the chances of this happening
18:15 i believe that this is DIRECTLY inspired by jim carreys real life You see him on interviews and hes all wacky gumby stretchy goofy guy but you can see his eyes aren't always behind it or he will say something that sounds like a joke but from that you can sense the emptiness Thats so much like truman Having to play a part your entire life no privacy
I can't possibly imagine what things people could say about you Mr Bingham that would make you wish you'd never seen them. That makes me sad. I really like your Truman Show videos, for what it's worth.
Truman is always on, always performing, you're right, it is because he's been trained that way. Jim Carrey was a perfect choice because, like so many great comedians, he learned young to get love by being the clown. Love had to be earned by a performance. I'll see how you address that in the video with Truman's mom
Just found these videos today when the one with Angela in the thumbnail showed up on my recommended. I loved your analysis about the characters in that one and I can’t wait to check out the rest of these episodes in your series!!!
i love that you have the butt shot 5:42 i just came from the last ep and am watching from start now. bravo youve made me fall in love w this movie on a different level
Christopher is have been LOVING this series and it insoured me to rewatch the film last night! I keep thinking about how Capitalist & Heterosexual & Suburban the truman show is - i almost want to make a video myself.
How is a movie heterosexual? Genuine question btw, you just got me curious. Or is it just any character in the movie besides the lesbian old ladies that are hetero?
Great video, IMHO, from what I learned, the "intent" doesn't matter when it comes to the validity of your interpretation, even if/when the creator says your interpretation is incompatible with their "intent"--NEway what do you think of EdTV?
Ya. I don’t think it could have been made today. It’s not a foreign enough idea in 2024. Privacy is barely a thing anymore. I feel like the closest we came to this is Jury Duty from last year. He of course knew he was being filmed, but did not realize everything was fake. He was almost as Truman as it gets.
Truman show today could maybe be done but much darker more like obvious hes playing a character like a Pinocchio type where instead of contrived scenarios itd be more directly puppet and puppet master Like how they say its not fake its controlled but itd have to be the opposite. Having more like the mother but worse, who is out for herself or meryl but instead being more of a direct handler out for control instead of her job
I think truman Show could be made today. it would be sklightly different. Propably more dark but it could... This movie (for me) has this Black Mirror vibe all over...
Hello so I believe I meant to comment this on this video? But for some reason I accidentally commented it on a short so I hope THIS video is the one my comment is relevant to: Honestly, your point about always on 100% reminded me of CHILD social media stars/influencers. At least television stars had some degree of privacy, these tiktok and youtube famous kids are always on from what it seems. And I say that because they have been obviously raised to feel like any moment of their lives is privy to the public, whether by storytelling or VIDEO!!! The potty training vids are insane and growing up knowing That is public? Would definitely make ME feel always on.
7:18 Every picture on the mantle piece is a picture of herself. That's how self-absorbed the actress playing as his mother is. That's a huge personality red flag. LOL
I never noticed until now, but the posters on the wall behind the Japanese family are really weird. They very much look handwritten by a foriegner. Or a child. But probably a foreigner. They have the awkward bad handwriting of someone who has never written Japanese before. And it doesn't make sense. It says "Meryl Burbank - Please watch everyday" and "Truman Burbank - broadcasting 24 hours". Those look like promotional posters so why would they be hand written? One weird piece of set design.
This is covered a lot more in deleted scenes and stuff. I think it was stripped out to make the movie more serious, and yes, downplayed because it's creepy too.
Could The Truman Show be made today? Do you mean a reboot or do you mean the actual thing? For a reboot? Sure. We have plenty of movies about people who's worlds aren't real, its the semi-conscious fear of the generation. An ACTUAL Truman Show made today? It would be a MASSIVE human rights violation. You would have to get SO many people on board that it just couldnt be done... except an innocent show about watching the growth of a baby that just... never finds its moment to end? Yeah, give it enough baby steps (no pun intended) and we become a monsterous species without even thinking about it.
Hey everyone! To launch this mini-series I'm sharing the first 2 EPISODES. Enjoy!

Me too haha

He was himself because he behaved 100% genuinely (until he figured out and escaped).
@@WheatDos Yes, I agree with you. Everyone is a product of their environment, and Truman is no different.
As for your final question I'd say yes plenty of black mirror episodes got close now the focused is far more on the social media. YOO BING IS ANIMATED
Things I didn't know I needed. Brilliant!
I like your Boeing hat. Hope it ages well!
Was Truman the first livestreamer?
Kai cenat is the perfect example especially in that big brother style house he's in now with cameras everywhere all the time

The Truman Show would have made an interesting yet gimmicky ending to The Village.
I believe RUclips Family channel and other things like that are modern versions of The Truman Show if you think about the kids POV
This is awesome

No discussion on how this is, allegedly, an analogy about our actual world.

Dude you talk about how you wish you didn’t see peoples comments. But you have less than 60 On this video alone!
Watch Serial Experiments Lain
You must like the matrix also
damn
It could work today. But it would have to be taking place in a past decade.
boing
Look, If you don't have anything nice to say just don't say it. Its just annoying 😐
I don't think you know what a podcast is...
