- Let's list every tiny detail about Primeval Series 1, Episode 6.
Where was it filmed? How many dinosaurs appear?
Massive thanks to @AncientRealms1999 and @HodgePodge7 for working closely on this project with me.

Iconic episode, probably will always be my favourite in the series. I remember watching this for the first time and being genuinely shocked at not just the idea of future creatures (I was expecting the finale to do something like a group of large theropods like Giganotosaurus or something, wait a few years lil me lol) but the way time changes, and as you explain how understated everything is until the realisation at the end. Also makes me wish they got to make the original plan they hoped to make, with the Series 3 especially being massively changed with everything that went down there (though it sounds like with that interview even Series 2 had some change in direction based on Douglas Henshall not enjoying it as much).
also lmao yeah gotta love how in Series 5 the future creatures are just "bugs but BIG" and "bugs but LOTS OF THEM", still wonder why they got less creative with the creatures after Series 3
I can't wait to see your series 2 breakdowns, I've loved the series 1 breakdowns. Also, out of all primeval finales, series 1 is probably the best in terms of how it pays off and because of the shock value. Series 3s ending is also pretty good.
It sucks we never see Claudia brown again.
I don’t know anyone of that name…
Nah that's Leek. Oliver Leek.
Honestly the idea of being lost to history. Rather than being losy in history. Seriously its terrifying
I think the Series 1 interpretation of Helen is probably the best version of the character
Definitely, we love her mysteriousness.
Great video, this episode is probably the best of the show. The future predator is so terrifying in its first appearance
So in conclusion series 1 has 7 Wilhelm screams to conclude on
Excellent in-depth analysis and humour. What an impressive endeavour!
You have no idea how difficult it was to get this video done...
Yeah every clip was copyrighted blocked for some reason. 🤦🏼♂️
@@thegreatprimevalshow hence the higher use of screenshots over audio instead for this one
Burnham Beeches Nature Reserve was used to film parts of this episode.
The meeting with Helen was shot at Upper Pond, and from the reserve's car park you can also see the treeline the team entered through to search the woods (the shot at 20:16 in this video).
I suspect the episode's forest scenes (excluding the anomaly site) were filmed in the reserve's woodland.
Ahh awesome information.
Be sure to plug The Unnatural History Channel's mer-creature video when you cover Episode 2.4.
Nice video, waiting for season 2 breakdown!
Will the 2x1 breakdown be uploaded next week or will we all have to wait until the anniversary? Absolutely loved these videos
We will take a short break before making them. We won’t make you wait a year for Series 2 though. 😉
What did you think of this breakdown?

@@thegreatprimevalshowaged well lol
I remember watching this episode on Saturday night. I was completely mind blown of what happened because I only just found out that she was not there with them in the Forest of Dean until Cutter ask were Claudia Brown. I was kind of hoping they bring her back in series 2 but I came to terms in the end accepting Jenny in the end.
Already dreading the time this will end...
I really liked the blokey relationship developing between Cutter and Captain Ryan and was sad to see it cut short. Their very first handshake during Ryan's introduction is accompanied by a unique somber track that I don't think appears anywhere else in the show, and Cutter's reaction to being told he's in the company of a Gulf War veteran is something between unnverved and in awe. The moment is expertly played by Henshall, who goes from standoffish to a little humbled.
To see them clash in the Permian and later develop an understanding was great. Going forwards, Cutter always looked glad to see Captain Ryan on site, likely acknowledging how the soldier had saved him from marooning himself in the Permian out of stubbornness and likely some shock. One of my favourite character moments is a shot in episode 3 in which Cutter arrives at the reservoir and gladly greets Ryan with a handshake and a familiar 'how are ya?' It's a stark change from their tense beginnings.
In the first series, it really feels as if Henshall was given the freedom to develop his character's nuances, and the neatly underplayed moments that came as a result went a little missing as the show moved away from its very character-driven, interpersonal beginnings.
We did notice that, its great attention detail to emphasise the loss of Ryan in 1x6 😢
One of the best episodes of the series, the introduction of one of my favorite fictional creature designs, and probably the first time a TV cliffhanger genuinely left me stunned after watching it the first time.
I also remember the reveal with the campsite from Episode 1 blowing my mind the first time around as well.
29:55 I do believe it may have reopened during Convergence. Although that's never confirmed.
EDIT: Although we know for certain that it does reopen, due to it reopening in episode 1. In theory, if the anomaly did close whilst Cutter was on the other side, he could return in episode 1 and then hide out until the events of episode 6 happen.
Oh thats an awesome idea. Cutter may be waiting several years in the Permian 😂
@@thegreatprimevalshow It's not too far off the idea the creators initially had for the ending of series 3.
Although it would have altered the story, it may have been nice if the creators had been able to used the animals from "After Man, A Zoology of the Future". To replace the future predator, they could have used the Nightstalker, a terrestrial giant bat from the islands of Batavia.
I wonder if the future predator here is the inspiration for the blind alien predator from the film "A Quiet Place" and its sequel?
I've not watched these shows and your dissection of series one has been most enjoyable and informative.
I look forward to the following episodes.
Sadly Afterman is own by Paramount and in all honesty I love what Primeval did to make their own future creatures without going for the easy route of using existing ones done by other creators, personally It may be cool to see but it wouldn't be the same without the future predator the mer creatures and the Megopteran, the Camouflage Beast and the future beetles
These hugh trained elet soilders finally get to live rounds. Just to get the red whirt treatment
25:15 may I ask where you got this CGI shot ?? I don't remember seeing it in the BTS... Also the baby looks SO MUCH like a xenomorph from side view thats insane
13:44 jesus fucking christ that is genuiely haunting, i have been a fan of primeval since series 2 aired, and i have NEVER noticed this.
Now I want you to make a video on primeval creatures or future predator
Hodge literally did a creature Profile on the Future Predator in ‘this’ video…
11:04 INDEED, at the beginning of the show there was an attempt in the script to bring back REX to the Prehistorical Wilderness. But of course that one failed The little fellow wanted to sty with Abby as Harry with the Detectives in DEATH IN PARADISE.
I mean REX had been done as an echo to SLIMMER in GHOSTBUSTERS to have an excellent merchandise for the toy-line to the show

Honestly you think that fence would stat anything?
It was probably to keep the public OUT rather than Creatures IN.
Never trust a woman as cool as Abby
No in north America. Or just america. We call it primeval
