I never had that issue, got my money back twice over off of my BFZ boxes. Lol. Admittedly, never had much of a use for most of the rest of it, though, so I see the point.
@Individual I cracked 3 boxes, zero expeditions, zero Gideons, *9 Emeria Shepherd* . Only value I got out of 3 boxes was 2 Newlamogs. Original Zendikar was so much better play wise too.
Store employe:Please Proffeser i want to go home its 3 in the mourning Proffeser: WE DO IT TILL ITS PERFECT! *whips out belt* Employe:NO PROFESSER NO!!
+Magic Man The whip of Erebos is used to drag people back into the realm of the dead. Does that mean the employee is dead and the Professor is actually Erebos?
no. In fact, it shows that the employee is simply dead to the professor, since the employee must have offended the professor by even suggesting that he buy a box of BFZ.
+BuriedFlame It's my friend's store, so not much. He gets lonely in the mornings and likes me hanging out with him. The guy behind the counter is an employee, and a friend I've known for years, but as I was filming he said he'd never once bothered to watch one of my videos, so I told him to get on camera and just stand there.
for new players I would suggest more budget products since they will have to spend soooo much on cards and the more money left over for cards the better! just get some ultra pro sleeves, a BCW small cardboard box that will hold your deck, tokens, dice, sideboard etc. go to your local 5 below or dollor store to get some dice and I wouldn't worry about needing a play mat. As for a binder just get a 3 ring binder and some ultra pro pages. what you are suggesting is that some new player needs to spend $100's on just accessories. That will just scare new players off, thinking they NEED all this stuff even before they spend $100-$infinite on a deck. Well a competitive deck.
This, for sure. Honestly in terms of sleeves KMC can actually be more affordable depending on where you live (in Japan they are around $5 per packet, and here in China I can get similar prices. Should be the roughly the same in Singapore, I think) so there's no need to downgrade to Ultra Pro in some cases, as their sleeves really aren't that great. As for deck boxes I feel that the cheaper Ultra Pro deckboxes (the ones with Deck Box right on the front) are probably better than using a BCW box. Yeah, they aren't great either but I would certainly prefer them to cardboard (this may be preference though).
+koskey06 This is what realy the video should be saying. The only item of those I would recomend to a new player from among the featured in the video are those card storage boxes. For sleves, the cheap ones that came on 100 sleves bags for 1€ are more than enough. for deck box also the cheapest one is fine. You dont really need a portfolio/binder and the playmat is merely cosmetic as the surfaces you play one are usually clean and smooth enough and you are using sleeves anyway. Total cost about 5€.
+MTGElite33 They are good enough if you are a new player who most likely wont have many expensive cards. I keep using them myself on decks I dont expect to give a lot of use or if I planed to dismantle it in afew games. I bought four of the commander 15 decks and I sleved them with the 1€ ones (wich happen to be ultra pro) because otherwise I would have to spend about 24€ on sleves, enough to buy another deck.
Professor, my wife and I saw your original video on the KMC Hypermats, and purchased them for our standard decks. You're absolutely right, in the fact that they tear much less frequently than a lot of other sleeve types, but I wanted to point out that people who do a lot of mash-type shuffling want to be careful with them, as there is a structural weakness on the sleeves on the bottom corners of the sleeves. We've lost quite a few of the KMCs recently, due to the sleeves ripping in the corners. I did some additional testing, on my own, and was able to fairly easily break 9 out of the 10 sleeves I tried to break, simply by putting a bit of pressure on the INSIDE bottom corners of the sleeves, which leads me to believe there is an underlying weakness there. I have no idea if you want to conduct this testing yourself, but just wanted to make you aware of my independent testing. Mash shufflers BEWARE!
@Professor: Just wanted to say thank you for making all these videos; as a returning player (played a tad bit roughly 15 years ago) I HIGHLY value the info your putting out. I've mostly seen your more recent videos so looking at one you made in 2015, let me tell you, you've come REALLY far in Production value, cheers and hope to see more!
I saw that guy at 0:14 the one time... Second time I went to anime imports! He congratulated me for getting my gideon. It was great. We have some serious history.
Thanks, Professor. I've been trying to get into MTG for about a month now, but it is quite a daunting task for someone why has never played, who doesn't know anyone who plays, or hasn't been to a game store before. So, your videos have been invaluable. I'm currently playing MTG: Duels of the Plainswalkers on Xbox (after getting suckered into buying a Deckbuilder's Toolkit before doing any research...). I've got a couple boxes of Dragon Shield and am working my way to my first deck.
Yup, same here. Carrying a mat around seems like a hassle coupled with a burden, just wipe off the table before you play to make sure you don't get sauce on your card backs.
This video actually really helped me. I took a break from Magic for a while and just last month decided to get back in. I totally couldn't remember all that I learned before I quit, so I went to RUclips for help. Thanks so much Professor and I had seen most of your other videos too!
+MC Malzahar Nothing wrong with Dragon Shields, but I think the Professor likes the Hyper Mats slightly more. This isn't an exhaustive list of what's out there, just the best of the best.
Thank you! In my area gamers are aloof at the best of times and turn into sharks in a fish tank if they smell naivety. God forbid you ask a "dumb question"
Wonderful video! So helpful, not only to newbies, but to family who want to know what the best products are for holiday gifts! I'll definitely be throwing this on my Yule wishlist for my relative's ease of access!
When the professor turned to say "hi" to the camera the guy he bought the box from just looked at the camera like wanted to die, buff I don't blame him it's a really awkward situation.
now that you mentioned inked gaming i looked into their stuff and found they have a lot of mats, bags, and even sleeves. I like the idea of personalizing my one favorite deck but don't know anything about their products and would like a review on their stuff (sleeves particularly).
I've been playing since 8th edition and this was still a good video. I however knew about these products (from previous reviews of the products by the professor) but it's nice to see all the "top picks" in one video.
Good idea, 'Tis the season. I do recommend getting a crate for a new player. Whether it be that monthly draft crate you talked about or the channel fireball one. I did like the cardboard crack counterspell sleeves with its evolution of man. I would recommend any box with dividers that holds sleeved cards as opposed to a deck box
i love that after watching TCC for a while, i now only use KMC hypermats (best sleeve) i use basic ultrapro deck boxes but i got 10 free with a bulk buy. i have a custom Inked playmat i use the same 5k storage boxes but admit the only binder i have is ultrapro (a gift). and all of the info in this video is the same as what i tell friends when they ask. :D best buys all round
Guys, Ultra Pro deck boxes (personally, I've only experienced the one-deck plastic ones with a flip top) and sleeves are just as good to start with. I have had no problem with any ultra pro product I have ever owned, including multiple sleeve types and multiple deck boxes.
kiki chord has a very good matchup against twin. This is because kiki chord's combo of rest ang/ kiki is a turn slower than exarch/twin, which means casting twin on exarch could lead to resto flickering the exarch and then proceeding to cast kiki on the next turn
I recommend Mead's recent line of flat book three ring binders. they don't use metal rings, favoring flexible soft plastic ones that lock into themselves and allow the portfolio to sit flat while browsing through the cards.
I also wanted to know when your next budget standard deck will be coming out my very first standard deck was your pain seerer mono black at it one all lot at my local FNM
+Christian Aguanno Ultra pro is the "budget" alternative. To be honest though, I ignore all the bad gradings of Ultra pro because I've never had them tear, rip, etc. As long as you don't shuffle like a poker player they last. I've had mine on the same decks for like 4 years
+N00bsNxtDoor Well it just makes no sense that there is no "life hacks" Like instead of buying a mousepad and spending the $ on that just get a playmat and use it for both. Or for example those Cardboard cases that cost like 1$ or whatever. give a shout out that they can hold a deck when sleeved. Just didn't feel like the biggest advice for a new player
One thing i would recommend for truely new players, especially those who might not live close enough to a LGS, is on amazon you can find a combo pack of a BCW 100 card plastic deck box and 100 ct BCW sleeves for $7 to 8 USD including shipping (2 day shipping with prime in most cases!) The box is functional though the sleeves are definitely on the flimsy side, but for 7 bucks for both its a really really hard deal to beat. Note that the lighter color sleeves tend be be a bit see through on the back. Again you are getting what you pay for here with the cheap sleeves (box is pretty good actually though) but for a new player its a hell of a deal.
Yeah seriously when I started playing trading card games I used the cardboard starter pack box as a carrying case and had rubber bands around my cards.
Professor, I was hoping this video would help me find what product I should buy for a friend who has never played so that she could get a feel for the game. Do you have a video on that topic, by chance?
I personally recommend those Ultra Pro deckboxes in flimsier plastic. They are very affordable and fit the amount of cards you're most likely to have in the beginning: 60. The Satin Tower will have cards scrambling around inside until over 100 cards are in there. Unless you live in a rain forest, the regular Ultra Pro deck boxes will do the job just fine for standard, modern, pauper and other 60-card formats!
I personally love the Satin Tower as I have broken pretty much every one of the fragile plastic ones. Well I also live in a rain forest so that might affect something as well.
+John Nilsson (Chrysaries) They can also fit your sideboard with left over room for a few tokens or something. I think you can get the 5 mana colors on Amazon for like 7-8$, and they're usually only like 2.50 at your LGS
+Protagonist I've never broken one of the flimsier ones myself, maybe it takes a few years. The rainforest thing was because I imagine they don't keep water out very well.
Great vid. clears up some of the things i've been thinking about. I have yet to start my collection its good to know what i will need. I've seen your beginners video but do you have more information about just starting out?
I don't get the chance to play much but but as me collection started growing i found dire need to store and orginize my cards so i seperated my cards by color then type and but them into food storage bags, decks into smaller ones and keep them in a backpack. I keep 20 dimes to use as counters in there too, may not be ideal but it works
i just got into magic. i buy alot of bulk. get nice cards for cheap. i love the commons and uncommons. the artworks on every card is just amazing. :D i do keep at least 4 of the same card for when i ever decide to play. any other letfover duplicats will go into another bulk which i will sell to a gamestore.
The clerk just staring at the camera at the start is so fucking funny to me
+Gerald Toaster He has no idea how to react hahaha no emotion at all

"Oh, I don't want this at all, please put it back."
That is the correct response.

no. In fact, it shows that the employee is simply dead to the professor, since the employee must have offended the professor by even suggesting that he buy a box of BFZ.
Magic Man Oh darn! Here I was thinking that the Professor was in fact the God of the Dead in disguise.

Buy storage boxes? Wait.... you mean you don't use your shoe boxes for storing cards? :D
In 1999 I had a Lee pipes (Levi’s) hip bag that I kept a game boy and random magic/Pokémon cards in.
I use my shoe
I just use plastic bags for the most part

Lol I guess so, good eye

Probably running from the body odor
My lgs owner has 3 in his shop lol

Did anyone else notice the cat slinking at the bottom of the frame at around 4:05? I love card-shop cats.

I've been watching your videos since I started playing mtg a week ago. They've been a great deal of help! Keep up the quality videos.
I really liked how professional you leaded the audience through the video!
I wish your content somehow was true for all local stores. I still really do love to watch these, you are a gift worth a fortune ;)
The cat though (4:08) (just behind the table)
The stinger on the end has perfect comedy timing! It's a Revelation!
I really wish this video existed when I started playing Magic, it would of saved so many of my cards.

I've been waiting for a video like this to come out, glad that you finally did.
Love what he said about BFZ to the clerk, "I don't want this at all, please put it back." Pretty much sums up that block for everyone.
That didn’t age well
I've been playing since 8th edition and this was still a good video. I however knew about these products (from previous reviews of the products by the professor) but it's nice to see all the "top picks" in one video.
It would be awesome to see printed Tolarian Community College printed sleeves. I would almost definitely buy some!
a great video, it's good to see some firm recommendations straight from the professor
+Tim J Cheers! That was the idea behind it.
Thank you so much for making this video. It's so much better than wading through hours of your reviews. Thank you thank you thank you.

You forgot the dice.

These life hack videos are just great, Super useful
Use hardshell plastic soap bar containers for your deck box. Holds 60-80 card decks and cost less then $1.
they have a cat in the card store!!! i love it! u can see it when hes talking about playmats by the D&D books
i love that after watching TCC for a while, i now only use KMC hypermats (best sleeve)
i use basic ultrapro deck boxes but i got 10 free with a bulk buy.
i have a custom Inked playmat
i use the same 5k storage boxes
but admit the only binder i have is ultrapro (a gift).
and all of the info in this video is the same as what i tell friends when they ask. :D best buys all round
Man that game store looks great! Really hope a lgs opens near me again

I also wanted to know when your next budget standard deck will be coming out my very first standard deck was your pain seerer mono black at it one all lot at my local FNM
I wish you also had a budget version for each idea for those who are extremely new and want the full experience
Not really that hard. If you want budget items that don't last, choose ultra pro. Other wise if not follow what the professor says.
+Christian Aguanno Ultra pro is the "budget" alternative. To be honest though, I ignore all the bad gradings of Ultra pro because I've never had them tear, rip, etc. As long as you don't shuffle like a poker player they last. I've had mine on the same decks for like 4 years

When you watch a 6 year old prof video and realize he was ahead of his time on the song every tick toc person has in their videos now.

Good video, these general tips are great for any trading card game.
some great info, still find it funny I've been playing over a year and a half and still haven't invested in a binder
Super helpful am new to magic even after watching the tours on twitch

i just had to pause the video and tell you, i love you, exactly what i was looking for.
Tolarion you should do more videos in the game store!

Useful recap for newcomers.
But this is REALLY stretching the definition of "life hack"

Great video professor, offtopic but kinda need to see a gamestore allow a indoor cat to just roam freely.
I started using Dragon Shields thanks to the earlier videos and I've never looked back. Are the KMC/Legion sleeves that much better?
I bought the ultra-pro non-glare pro-matte sleeves cause they were on sale in a light blue and green and they work nicely.
Great vid. clears up some of the things i've been thinking about. I have yet to start my collection its good to know what i will need.
I've seen your beginners video but do you have more information about just starting out?
Wow, where is this shop? I love the way it looks and it’s cluttered feel, plus there’s a cat in the shop!
really smart approach in the video
excellent video, prof!
Hey professor you might wanna look in the corner of the screen at 3:23 and then look at what is being shown on the screen
I found a brilliant thing, a DB Toolkit or Fat Pack box can fit 3 single-sleeved EDH decks :D
I love the Bill Nye sound effects!
I use a plastic grocery bag as my deck box. Affordable as hell. You guys need to try it out.
