As someone who was a sailor/commercial fisherman from 8-18, while these songs are amazing, we were always too busy screaming at each other in rage or jest to sing. That or eating things like eggs, bacon and toast. it was a tough life, so it's weird to see it romanticized this much now a days. If you wanna know how tough it was, well, everyone I grew up alongside fishing, the older folks, they're all dead. It's intensely laborious, so when your body is not constantly being worked like that and in shape, it breaks down. At 29 I have to walk with a cane and use a cochlear and glasses. Well... It's only partially about romaticizing things. Shanties were in fact sung aboard ships in the 19th century because they were used to coordinate work efforts. The shanty of this video, Leave her Johnny, was typically sung when pumping dry a ship in port after a longer voyage before the crew would leave it whereas the popular Drunken Sailor was used to coordinate rope hauling.

The lyrics are clearly describing the melancholy and mixed emotions of ending a voyage, but many people here are talking about ending toxic relationships and when friends inevitably depart. Music is so powerful it can touch people in so many ways.
And its kinda the same too, feeling sad or doubting if you should leave the relationship or friends because of the journey you been through with these people.
I think it hits hardest when the feeling is of leaving someone you’re not sure you should have left, but you did it anyway because you thought you knew best and now you question it every day. The end of a voyage I think can be described in many ways as you have alluded to.
Music tells a story. Sometimes it needs lyrics to tell that story and other times it doesn't. However I believe that music does something more. That music is sound obviously but it's more than that. Because the emotions that it causes are echoes balancing off the shape of the soul of the person hearing every person every soul is a little bit different. And so it will in general have kind of the same effect but it'll also reverberate differently because it's the the shape of the soul it's bouncing off of is different for each person

AND WE'LL ALL HANG ON BEHIND!
CLEAR AWAY THE TRACK AND LET THE BULLGINE RUN!
A drop of Nelson's blood wouldn't do us any harm.
I can honestly say you hold my top two favorite arrangements for this song.
MORE OLD FOLK SONGS LIKE THIS PLEASE!!!!
SEA SHANTIES BY JONATHAN YOUNG!?!!? YES PLEASE!!!
I love it!
How beautiful it is...What have you done? I'm crying. 😢😞
Almost 1 full year later and this song is still very well and beautifully done
I don't normally like slow songs, but I couldn't switch this off. That voice. These shivers 😍
I thought I heard the Old Man say:
"Leave her, Johnny, leave her."
Tomorrow ye will get your pay,
and its time for us to leave her.
Leave her, Johnny, leave her!
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her!
For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her.
Oh, the wind was foul and the sea ran high
Leave her, Johnny, leave her!
She shipped it green and none went by.
And it's time for us to leave her.
Leave her, Johnny, leave her!
Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her!
For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow
And it's time for us to leave her.
NO! NO! NO! Many people say I am sick in the head. NOOOO!!!! I don't believe them. But there are so many people commenting this stuff on my videos, that I have 1% doubt. So I have to ask you right now: Do you think I am sick in the head? Thanks for helping, my dear heo

Sea shanties and Jonathan Young, two of my favorite musical things combined into one brilliant auditory experience!
I needed this man, was having a night in my head and this brought me out. Much love, keep it up.
My god that voice is so relaxing at 2am
Man, you know Johnny Depp's friends were probably singing this to him everyday.
Hahaha, Ikr?
There's something beautiful in the melancholy of this tune.
Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper would probably be a great cover
I love that song and I actually heard them play it in concert
I feel like he'd have more fun with godzilla though
A came to RUclips looking for sea shanties, but instead I found mostly videos about sea shanties, the history of sea shanties without any sea shanty songs. This is the first sea shanty video found thanks!
This is a pretty damn nice way to end my birthday
happy birthday bro I hope it's been a good one 😌
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday, and congrats on getting an amazing xmas present from Jonathan XD
Hope your birthday was great!
Happy birthday~!
AC4 is easily my favorite Assassin's Creed game. It just brings back memories of easier times and fun adventures, so thank you truly for this.
This is so weird.
I was literally thinking "It would be cool if Jonathan did a cover of Leave her, Johnny"
And now i found this!
Hell yeah.
If you had a playlist of these man...I don't think I'd ever stop listening to it
"Without gold, we mighta' been heroes!"
"THATCH!"
I really love these type of "covers".
Your voice isnt limited to only rock and metal, its very special and I really would like to hear other kinds of music from you, like this one!
Slow, emotional songs fit your voice really well.
I want a whole album of sea shanties. Please make this happen!
this gave me massive nostalgia to my childhood. gotta get back out on the sea, those were really simpler times
Johnny: How do you deal with back acne?
Old Captain: Lever, Johnny, Lever
Sounds like a song I'd hear them play in my church, I love it 🥹
"Oak, Ash, & Thorn" By Rudyard Kipling, The Longest Johns version.
"God Hunter" By the Aviators
"Invincible" By Pat Benatar
"Bury The Light" By Casey Edwards with Victor Borba (DMCV)
"Wayfaring Stranger", Folk Song
"Bridge Over Troubled Water" By Paul Simon
"The Lion From The North" By Sabaton
"Pure Imagination" By Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley (Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory)
"Bless The Broken Road" By Marcus Hummon, Bobby Boyd, & Jeff Hanna (Rascal Flatts version)
I mean, if we're going Longest Johns, Ashes is a great one.
Love it. No silliness, no ads or updates to break it up, just pure, emotional brilliance
Everyone: "Dude, Edward was so fun to play and I love the sea."
Jonathan Young: "why are they mentioning Edward and some ship, this is a real shanty-"
You mean the assassins creed pirates Guy?
Since I was a little girl I've been fascinated with adventure, ships, pirates, sailing away into the sunset .. this just gave me chills ❤ Thankyou
me sailing in AC:BF just to listen and sing along to the shanties:
