Great video of how a Subey behaves when you didn't research first how to drive an AWD on sand. The car is fully capable. Plus going so slow on off beach is 1/2 ya problem. Low PSI (18) and definitely turn stability control OFF. 2008 SH Forester Auto, larger diameter tyres, never bogged. Touch wood! Only concern for Subey drivers is clearance so look ahead.
Nice to see a fellow Subaru driving on the beach good job reversing you way out of a bog Did you turn off traction control btw? it seems the last few clips of the exit - your tyres power was being cut by the system
I just bought an XV and we have a forester already so we are planning a beach excursion, can't wait. Downgraded from a Landcruiser so totally different vehicle now, hopefully they just skip across the top
Nice first time out. Tyres to 18psi down to 10 if needed to get out of a bog. Approach cuttings with a bit of gusto. Momentum is your friend, snail pace equals sinking down and bogging. The moment you Sen CD a loss of traction, stop and slowly reverse and start a faster longer run up. It will surprise you where it will go. Get some recovery tracks and a snatching strap if you plan on continuing soft sand driving.
Loved Australia while I was in Sydney for 3 years. Beautiful video of the car and of course Aussie's beautiful beaches. Currently in Doha, Qatar and thinking if the XV is good to take on the sand dunes. In the video it does seem to struggle and go slower as compared to the Patrol/LandCruisers. Considering the XV is within my price range and capacity needs, what do you all think?
Jon Eds the XV is really too low for Sand dunes. If 99% of your driving will be on the road, it might be ok. The 4WD system and power are good. The ground clearance is the bit that lets it down.
My Subaru gets me anywhere, no problem, every terrain. Slick ice requires chains but everything else, including foliage, sand, rivers (don't go above the door or you'll have wet floorboards) wildfire terrain, you name it. So, go for the Subaru.
@@byrondixon4648 i elevated? (idk if thats the right word) mine for 10cm+ no more problems in terrain and it still handles totally fine at higher speeds (no wobbly feeling or something)!
It's a night and day difference in grip when you lower the tyres to 16-20psi. Yes, it sucks having to re-inflate them, but you will rarely get bogged then.
I'm looking at getting the new XV that has the X-Mode from the Foresters. I'm keen to see how these handle soft sand BEFORE I take mine on the sand. I used to own a 2008 Forester (manual with low range) and this handled soft sand "relatively" ok, however I found that the main issue was a lack in power. I think this is the biggest downfall of the XV particularly in soft sand. It really needs a LOT more power IMHO.
Hi John Lambert, I don't actually think power is really the limiting factor. Ground clearance is a much bigger issue. By selecting a lower gear on the auto and keeping the revs up, it's fine. It would be nice to have more power, but the excellent fuel consumption would probably suffer.
Good to hear Byron, thanks. I currently own an Impreza and love how economical it is, especially on the highway (5.2l/100km). At least with the XV I can take it off road!
There is an ECU retune for any vehicle that needs a bit more pep. Great video. I think a bit better tyre choice, like some a/ts or mud & snow tyres would be a great compliment for an XV. Am looking at one for myself.
What is that protection on your hood? Believe it or not I'm from the States drive a '15 Crosstrek and already see rust spots in that part of the hood. Thanks. Cheers!
New Jersey. probably pepples or rocks that flung up from Highway driving. I also have some dirt roads with loss gravel I take the car on. Was the hood protector an accessory?
@@billymanwailei6167 it was rolled. It may well have been a good buy for a young guy who didn't mind quite a few scratches... From memory all the doors still opened.
lol good production!/ but that car Will act the same with traction control on of off. Due to the low poor of the crosstreck... power upgrades are needed!!!!!
Hi Roneil P, you need to buy a permit before you cross the bridge to the island. He will tell you where to go. It's about 1k north of patrolled surf beach. Have fun
Tire set pressure is relative to the laden weight of what ever vehicle your driving. My 4WD 10 ton truck, the maximum I can let them down to is about 32 psi and they are completely pancaked.
I love the Subaru Crosstrek for the fact that it's got the best safety rating and some the best equipments for the price, but I still prefer the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport for its ability to switch between front wheel, l four wheel and four wheel lock differential
Does the Outlander get on and off the beach? I had a lot of trouble with the Toyota Rav 4 on Soft sand a few years ago. I was quite happy with the Crosstrek's ability for what it is.
Byron Dixon never tried it on the beach, but that four wheel lock differential is some pretty great stuff when dealing with really terrible surfaces that are like sand and snow and mud
Byron Dixon Yeah always remember to turn traction control off in sand or mud. Stops the computer cutting power. The only time I got stuck on Fraser in my Forester was when I forgot to turn it off after parking for a bit. Get a big metal sump guard and I'd wager you'd be able to do Fraser too.
that might work in California but try Long Island New York go 4-wheeling with a Subaru Forester will not work no all-wheel drives work on Long Island ny
you don't have the ground clearance before we land on the beach you got to air down 15 pounds at least and then it'll be too low to the ground and you'll get stuck
@@kingsoulsurfer41 Not necessarily true. I have a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek (stock tires) and a 2012 Tacoma TRD offroad with A/T tires. The Crosstrek has 8.9" ground clearance and the Tacoma has 9.3" (Less than a half inch difference!) The Crosstrek actually does better on the sand than the Tacoma. That could be due to better weight distribution in the Crosstrek as the Pickup is light in the back, or maybe it's the smart AWD constantly adjusting for the terrain. Or maybe it's because the Crosstrek has regular tires and not A/T's. But the AWD in the Crosstrek combined with the 8.9" ground clearance does remarkably well. BUT... The Tacoma TRD off road does have actual 4WD and also has rear lockers if needed. So I feel better knowing if I do get stuck in the Tacoma, I have a better chance of getting out. But as far as driving, the Crosstrek handles better in the sand and glides effortlessly. Never been stuck on Smith Point or Demo or Sore Thumb
Kudos for not flooring it and digging four wheel holes like half the bogans on Fraser Island with 4WDs.
Hi, recently I bought a Subaru XV, I'm very excited for to take it to the beach, thanks for the video.
Dude I'm telling it don't take it to a Long Island beach in New York because the sand is too soft
That color is very nice 👍🏻
Well that was fun! I need to find some beaches on this side of the pond to drive with my Crosstrek!

IMHO 20 psi is too high, would have gone straight to 12 considering the weight of the vehicle.

Every Australian video needs to include someone getting a Bunnings snag
