I own a 2014 crosstrek I bought it brand new now has 160000 miles, I use tk work drive 100 miles every day, no problem at all, just regular maintenance tires, battery, best car
I have the '14. Bought it new. Automatic. Love it. 113k miles now. Only issues I've had was to replace the air conditioner, and the latch that opens the hatch had to be replaced. One of my favorite cars i've ever owned.

I love close to the Cleveland area and have a 13 xv Crosstrek and it's great just normal maitnecne it does have a new engine under warranty and the transmission is strong with 125k miles
I’ve been fortunate, I have a 2016 crosstrek with 50k miles. I bought it new, I’ve had no issues so far. I’ve shipped it to Portugal, Germany and Colorado now. It drives like a dream off road and on the highway
@Ultra CNC you can find a hub and bearing on ebay under $60, and they last. If you have tools, it's pretty easy to change yourself. RUclips has tutorials. I've done 2 on mine, and brakes. Very easy cars to work on.
I drive a 2012 XV( Crosstrek) since 2018. Great car for living in the 🇨🇭Alps..took me through snow and ice even totally iced flat sections safely. Gas mileage is perfect on long trips. I love the rugged design..and the ground clearance..we've had 30cm of snow in our parking lot..aside from shoveling a path and removing snow I just plowed thru. It's very trusty car if you do the maintenance properly. I hate those modern spaceship touchscreen style cockpits..so yeah I love the chunky old fashion style controls on my XV. It's not really a rocket..the CVT is more apt to cruising..but I always had enough "oomph " to cross passes and steep driveways. The only thing I had to change was the battery ( still had its factory one..) and a lightbulb. I hope it'll stay with me for many more years..it took me safely thru a rough divorce and stormy months. Currently own a 2012 Subaru Outback Limited 2.5i and it has 104,500 miles on it. I love it for the fact that it's practical but not a sedan or a big bulky SUV/crossover. It has some personality to it and I like that about it. With so many car manufacturers making indistinguishable cars, I like that mine is fairly distinctive since it's not a sedan, truck, or SUV, which seems to be the only body styles I see on the road. I also appreciate its AWD and ground clearance too since I live in New Jersey and we can have a couple nor'easters. I also sometimes drive to Upstate NY to ski in the winter and the AWD handles the snowy mountains very well. I have the upgraded Harmon/Kardon sound system and for a 2012 car, it's really pretty good. I also bought the model with the backup camera and navigation. Though old, the navigation is quick and fairly easy to use for being a ten year old system and the backup camera makes parallel parking super easy
I have a 2014 Crosstrek that I purchased new in 2014. I currently have 205000 miles on it. I replaced the front CV joints, other than regular maintenance. I love the way it handles in snow. I love the hatchback used it many times on Home Depot runs. It's easy to maneuver and love driving it. Glad I bought it.
Thank you for the review. We bought a 2014 Crosstrek new in 2014 and so far we had to put in a new battery and I had to put in a new passenger side front hub assembly.
You can always take it into Subaru and get the transmission checked it is under warranty until 100000 miles so you won't pay a dime to get it replaced until that point.
My v6 2008 Toyota 4Runner @ 162k same old everything. Yes, changed brakes and 1 battery. Gets 24mpg on long road trips because I overinflate the front tires, need to be extra vigilant when driving. I’m looking at these Subaru’s for better mpg, but hearing of transmission failure will keep me with Toyota. Thank you for your post.

@@jamal6509 I ended up with an Outback with a 6 speed. I traded it in for a Mazda CX-5 because of some problems I had with it. It was a 2012. From what I hear the Crosstrek’s aren’t plagued with the engine issues the Outback’s have. Woman I work with has an Orange Crosstrek. Not gonna lie. I’m kinda jealous. I do love my CX-5 though.
I bought a 2014 model 6 speed CVT as well in August/Sept of 2021 and it's now March 2022. 115k on it and I took it to Southern California from Northern Utah and then went from Northern Utah to Los Vegas twice got about 28mpg on average each trip, not sure why. I took it off road for like 20min and ended up finding that I needed to replace the front driver CV axle. Replaced the spark plugs and suspect I need to replace the spark plug gaskets for the valve cover area as I noticed oil on the ceramic side of some of the spark plugs. I did replace my tires with Falken Wildpeak A/T all seasons tires with a 3 peak rating. I am currently getting 18mpg city, not driving much since I work from home, but going anywhere is basically 10 minutes there and 10 minutes back through stop lights. I also added a 2in tow hitch receiver to it, was pretty simple though I recommend having 2 hands to do it or something to prop up the tow hitch to the car to have your hands free. Oh and you will have to make some cuts into the frame to add the tow hitch, not a big deal but just be aware. I will need to replace my front bushings on both sides and I might go for a 1.5in lift when I do because both require an alignment after it's done. Not wanting to put bigger tires on it when I lift it because money. I do want to add an under carriage metal plate for the rear dif and front. I also want to add a front brush guard. Other than those things I love the car, just want to figure out why I'm not getting the MPG stated by the manufacturer.
Great review on your Crosstrek. After trying Honda, Toyota and Mazda we recently bought Subarus for a change. My wife has a 2019 Crosstrek Sport and I have a 2020 WRX Sport-Tech both with CVTs. Both are a year old now and working great. Subaru has the best AWD system for the price and comes in handy for the snowy winters in Canada.
I have a 2015 crosstrek with 65,000 miles and the transmission is going strong. I believe they addressed a lot of the cvt complaints for the 2015 model. Not positive but that's what I have heard. Great car! Love the white.
I have just ordered a used 2015 xv,am here to anticipate,but so far so good ,I have not seen any reviews from African terain usage but from what am reading I think it will manage with timely servicing .thanks
I'm an outdoor guy and I bought a used 2014 Crosstrek, (XV in Sweden) back in 2015 for the same reasons as you (It was 6 months old then). I've never had that transmission problem you describe. The car is now close to 10 years old now and it still runs perfectly, with 10 000 km on the odometer, or 62 000 miles. (Hope I didn't jinxed it now).
Identical to mine lol mine has 70000 miles and never missed a beat. bought it just as a run around as my other car sits in garage. i did run winter tyres on mine but had to change to cross climates due to road noise and stiffness for day to day running. Had to do a few things to it, a/c needed sorted and topped up, rear shocks replaced, rear axle mounts also replaced. Run of mill stuff. Still pulls like a train and 45+mpg.
I have a 2014 and have changed the oil every 3,000 miles, no major repairs other than the right rear wheel bearing, a front passenger drive shaft. I have replaced the spark plugs, fan belt, brake switch is a recall issue and will cause all of you lights to go on including the check engine, hill holder, ABS brake light. It's a simple fix and takes about 20 minutes to do it on your own. All in all it has been a great reliable car. I got some weather tech mats for mine which will save the carpet.
I really appreciate your honesty. I've been thinking about a Crosstrek as my next car but your honest words just changed my mind. New Transmission at 60K - no thank you. Thats too bad as it looks like a neat car with some good aspects. I hope your Subaru lasts a good long time and what happened was a fluke.
CVT's are just bad transmissions used by everyone because its easy to mate it with hybrid systems and its just cheaper than normal automatic. Get a manual, if you know how ot drive but didnt learn to drive stick - do so. Its really easy if you have already know to drive. Manual will never fail and wont need a repair of replacement unless you really abuse it and even then after severe and long abuse manuals need replacement after 150 miles, but only if minor issues with it being not as smooth to shift. If you are not bothered with it you dont need to replace it ever. And if you drive nicely it will stay good for hundreds of tousands of miles/kilometres.
I have the same year, make, model & color/interior as your car and at 88,000 miles, I average 25 mpg combined mileage. The best I’ve ever gotten is 27 mpg combined (even though I drive mostly freeway miles). I have replaced the battery, tires and brake lights up to now. Lastly, I have an oil leak which requires me to as 1/2 quart of oil at about 2,500 mark after an oil change...so that’s what I am addressing now. I hope to keep it until it hits 200k miles (currently 88k at 4 years 7 months).
I've owned five Subarus, I currently own a 2005 Forester with 174k original engine and transmission (5 speed manual) and a 2018 Forester with 27k with a CVT. Both have been very good vehicles. It sounds like your car has been more problematic then any of mine have been.
I have a 2016 hyper blue limited. 42000 miles. Have just changed oil every 6000 miles(full synthetic). , brake fluid once, and new battery No other issues. Door dings? Don’t park close to people. You are right. The power in the car is the main issue. But it’s not a race car. I put lots of mods on mine. At Tires, white spar c o wheels, lift, cargo rack , spoiler, hood deflector ,.new speakers, subwoofer, blacked out lights. Id buy another crosstrek but get the bigger engine available now. Also 2023 should be completely new design!
I have the same year my crosstrek is black with 13000 thousand miles only regular maintenance been camping with it and towing and trailer with inflatable boat with a 20hp mercury engine on it haven't had any problems 9 years owner..
@@vanity68 my 2014 Forester has only 60k, but I’m planning on keeping it a long time, hopefully at least until 150k or so. Thankfully the transmission is perfectly fine, praying it stays that way.

Thanks for posting this. My daughter is living in Colorado Springs(I am in Texas) and I am shopping for her a car. I want her to have a Subaru because they are the experts in all-wheel drive. The older ones have pretty predictable head gasket and timing belt issues, but that's about it. Looks like these new ones are a mess. Thinking about a CRV or RAV4 or something.
Rav4 and CRV have reactive awd systems. Nowhere as capable as Subaru's symmetrical awd that is always engaged. Some of the 2.5 engines had head gasket issues but they are pretty solid cars. Personally I know more friends with Hondas and Toyotas with blown head gaskets. I never have had that on any of my Subies, but did in my Toyota Supra. I have a 2013 Crosstrek and I love it. And a 2006 Legacy GT.

Had two transmission replaced. At $10,000 per. It’s honestly a garbage car. Fan boys will often tell you that Subaru outsources the production of the CVT to Toyota but they don’t. It’s made in house by subsidiary called Fiji Heavy Industries. There are tons of people on the internet that talk out of their ass.
Hi Natalie Yeah the earlier crostreks, forester and outback did have gearbox issues but that was probably down to their supplier (Jatco) i believe, but on the later models Subaru decided to build their own in-house. Im fortunate to have a diesel forester (🇬🇧 UK guy and UK option) with 6 speed manual transmission, influencedby a great guy known as Donald from Softroadingthewest. Your issue is the reason I didnt buy a cvt driven subaru. Anyway atleast now you should be trouble free-ish for a while. Keep adventuring lovely lady
First off it's NOT an SUV, it's a wagon with lifted suspension. I was going to get a 13 model and drive it to find out it had the infamous rear crossmember humm. The boxer engine is also known for bad head gaskets and overheating. Also, bad CVTs on all models but the manual is a gem. I Love the crosstrek though and the design as well as how practical it is. With all this said, still wont beat a Honda or Toyota as far as reliability and or quality. Just my 2 cents having owner both.
I have 2015 XV, pretty much the same , this car is not made for off road driving as a a main purpose, this is due to the CVT transmission, it’s a street car with some off road capabilities , after watching so many videos people make about replacing their CVT , I drive my car very careful and never push it since I’m out of warranty. I don’t know what’s gotten into car manufacturers with this fragile transmission and put it in a SUV vehicle . Anyway your review is awesome and what you’ve experienced is exactly like what I have . But it’s a nice car and I love it

New struts at 73,000 miles? Is this a dealership or a generic garage you are using. Might want to get a second (third?) opinion on some of these “regular maintenance” items. Some dealerships will often try to sell you things you don’t need. Even though the trans was still covered under warranty, they probably could’ve just changed the fluid and it would’ve fixed the problem. I’m fortunate enough to have a very honest mechanic that works on my car so I never take it to the dealership. I have a 2014 Forester with just over 60k and the trans is working fine.
My subie runs strong up hills...yes they show door dings ...we get about the same gas mileagei wish it had the tow package but I'm about to put one on it ....2015 Crosstrek xv
all my Subarus shows door dings compared to other cars, I think its the thinner sheet metal as part of there crumple safety feature, some how related, I'm sure. All my Subaru required more maintenance then my Toyota side owned, but I love the Subaru AWD and keeps me coming back. I keep a $1500 emergency vehicle fund available when owning a Subaru, always had a single repair in the first 150,000 miles that was between $1300-$1800

My mom drives a 2020 Subaru Outback XT Onyx Edition. A few weeks ago we got a mail from Subaru. That they is a recall for the transmission. What it said it could happen. That the chain could slip off.

Every car brand has its issues. My Crosstrek is at 99k, and no issues what so ever. I worked at Subaru and people have put 200k on theirs with no problems. Just change the fluid when recommended.
I drove a 2020 or 2021 model Subaru XV for 2 weeks and loved it! For a lot of my driving life I've driven Outback's and Liberty's, always in Manual. I can't afford a new current model XV, so I've looked at older models. I'm hearing issues to do with the auto transmissions, but by close to 200,000 kms (125,000 miles) I figure it should have been sorted out. Just wondering two things on this era of XV: Does it have keyless start, or is it still the age old key in the ignition system? Secondly, how good is the reverse camera? In my job I'm required to do a lot of reversing, often in the dark, so a good reversing camera is now a must to avoid bumps and collisions.

Honda is notorious for dogshit automatic transmissions, for one example. Most modern (japanese) CVT transmissions are even more off the charts for dogshit..
I have a 2013 Crosstrek. Purchased new. Had to repair the original transmission. Had to put a new transmission, 3 rear wheel bearings, Engine had to have new valve springs. Will not buy another one. Have better luck with Hondas.
I'm thinking the warranty doesn't transfer but you can check by registering your vehicle at the subaru of america website. Also, you can order badges for your Subaru as well.

I sat in a Crosstrek once that a dealership had left unlocked over a weekend and really liked the Crosstrek to but would still like to test drive one to compare. It’s probably gonna be a few more months before I actually buy, but as of right now I’m leaning towards the Forester! 👍
@@AMF96 awesome! I haven’t driven the Crosstrek either but I’ve heard they’re pretty fun to drive. I sometimes wish I had gone for the XT Forester but it’s quite a bit more expensive than the non-turbo and gets worse gas mileage, so it really depends on what you want. Mine has enough pickup in most situations but can be a bit sluggish going up-hill especially when there’s a lot of people and heavy equipment in the vehicle. Aside from that it’s a great car
MY 2014 XV is a DOG! putchaced with 50,000 miles. At 60k all 4 wheel bearings replaced. next came both front wishbones due to bushes rotted and only able to get the whole units. Next at 65k the main drive shaft bearing which meant the entire shaft replaced!!! and both front brake discs warped then took under body trays off to find EVERY pipe and cable fixing rotted away completely and the factory rust protection only on 50% of exposed steel so lots of rot. At 70k the rear trailing arms and every!!!! suspension bush rotted. The central locking occasionally locks me in or out and the fault cannot be traced. The worst car I ever bought.
Thanks for the information. I came across one for a great price but with 70,000 miles on it. It was a 2014 with a manual transmission l. I know the warranty will cover anything up to 100,000 miles, but that only gives me 30,000 miles left. I love that car, but might need to look for something with less miles. Thank you.
If it’s a CVT the transmission fluid needs to be changed roughly every 25k miles, so if an individual doesn’t keep up with the maintenance it can lead to having to purchase a new transmission
the cvt's in nissan and subaru are known for being super unrealiable. Thats why i generally stay with stick shift manual or the oldschool torque converters if I need an auto.

One person's issues doesn't define them all. I have the same car. At 99k, and no issues at all. Just wear and tear stuff like brakes, wipers, rotors, tires. Plus not awd systems are the same. Subaru is top notch!
The ascent is the only subaru that seems to have problems now so good move. The rest are pretty reliable but 60000 miles transmission change is scary. I have a 2016 crosstrek. No problems. Just 42000 miles though.
I work in Honda for a while I love Honda and Crv as until now but for a change j bought used 2015 forester with 160k so far I had 275k already but only issue is burning oil so I have to check and tap it every 2 weeks which according to subaru dealership is normal..well even new crv had same issue anyways..
hopefully you see this and can answer a question for me! especially since this video is now over two years old. I am actually about to test drive a 2014 subaru crosstrek 2.0i premium edition. I've been doing some research and i already know to ask about the transmission and if the headers have been rebuilt but even if all that has already been done, the car is over 100,000 miles already which of course is a red flag. but i really really like the thing. As an owner of the vehicle do you think assuming the mechanical work is all up to date it's worth the risk? they're asking 12,400 which is already above my budget so if something goes wrong, well lets just say that would be super sucky. knowing what you know firsthand, if you were in my situation would you buy it?

I have a 2014 crosstrek the one big thing that has happened was I had to replace the transmission throttle body. It happened at 105000 miles a very expensive repair around 2 grand. Other than that just regular maintenance. I have always thought though that it goes through brakes and tires rather quickly. I now have 120000 miles on it and plan on trying for 200000.

change the transmision oil regularly and put the original cvt lube, the normal automatic oil can damage a cvt easily

Have you done transmission oil changes? If so, I hear it's recommended to use subaru oil to change it. Wondering if you used subaru oil, or not

One hub/wheel bearing in 3/4 years isn't bad..

My v6 2008 Toyota 4Runner @ 162k same old everything. Yes, changed brakes and 1 battery. Gets 24mpg on long road trips because I overinflate the front tires, need to be extra vigilant when driving. I’m looking at these Subaru’s for better mpg, but hearing of transmission failure will keep me with Toyota. Thank you for your post.
Thank you! I’m looking at used Crosstreks right now. I’m not confident in the CVT so I’ve been looking at the manual shift models. Love the rubber in the back. I’m a mountain biker in Connecticut and my stuff gets nasty. Your review really helped me! Such a cool little car!

@@jamal6509 I ended up with an Outback with a 6 speed. I traded it in for a Mazda CX-5 because of some problems I had with it. It was a 2012. From what I hear the Crosstrek’s aren’t plagued with the engine issues the Outback’s have. Woman I work with has an Orange Crosstrek. Not gonna lie. I’m kinda jealous. I do love my CX-5 though.
I bought a 2014 model 6 speed CVT as well in August/Sept of 2021 and it's now March 2022. 115k on it and I took it to Southern California from Northern Utah and then went from Northern Utah to Los Vegas twice got about 28mpg on average each trip, not sure why. I took it off road for like 20min and ended up finding that I needed to replace the front driver CV axle. Replaced the spark plugs and suspect I need to replace the spark plug gaskets for the valve cover area as I noticed oil on the ceramic side of some of the spark plugs. I did replace my tires with Falken Wildpeak A/T all seasons tires with a 3 peak rating. I am currently getting 18mpg city, not driving much since I work from home, but going anywhere is basically 10 minutes there and 10 minutes back through stop lights. I also added a 2in tow hitch receiver to it, was pretty simple though I recommend having 2 hands to do it or something to prop up the tow hitch to the car to have your hands free. Oh and you will have to make some cuts into the frame to add the tow hitch, not a big deal but just be aware.
I will need to replace my front bushings on both sides and I might go for a 1.5in lift when I do because both require an alignment after it's done. Not wanting to put bigger tires on it when I lift it because money. I do want to add an under carriage metal plate for the rear dif and front. I also want to add a front brush guard.
Other than those things I love the car, just want to figure out why I'm not getting the MPG stated by the manufacturer.
Great review on your Crosstrek. After trying Honda, Toyota and Mazda we recently bought Subarus for a change. My wife has a 2019 Crosstrek Sport and I have a 2020 WRX Sport-Tech both with CVTs. Both are a year old now and working great. Subaru has the best AWD system for the price and comes in handy for the snowy winters in Canada.
Honestly I think Subaru has the best all wheel drive system. I own a Volvo XC70 and I like Subarus all wheel drive even more than my Volvo.
I have a 2015 crosstrek with 65,000 miles and the transmission is going strong. I believe they addressed a lot of the cvt complaints for the 2015 model. Not positive but that's what I have heard. Great car! Love the white.
I think a lot of people forget that CVTs need transmission fluid changes more often than other cars, probably leading to the bad reviews

I'm an outdoor guy and I bought a used 2014 Crosstrek, (XV in Sweden) back in 2015 for the same reasons as you (It was 6 months old then). I've never had that transmission problem you describe. The car is now close to 10 years old now and it still runs perfectly, with 10 000 km on the odometer, or 62 000 miles. (Hope I didn't jinxed it now).

Identical to mine lol mine has 70000 miles and never missed a beat. bought it just as a run around as my other car sits in garage. i did run winter tyres on mine but had to change to cross climates due to road noise and stiffness for day to day running. Had to do a few things to it, a/c needed sorted and topped up, rear shocks replaced, rear axle mounts also replaced. Run of mill stuff. Still pulls like a train and 45+mpg.
I love Subaru cross trek but issue on transmission with just only 73.000 mileages discourage me from buying this beautiful vehicle.

I have a 2014 and have changed the oil every 3,000 miles, no major repairs other than the right rear wheel bearing, a front passenger drive shaft. I have replaced the spark plugs, fan belt, brake switch is a recall issue and will cause all of you lights to go on including the check engine, hill holder, ABS brake light. It's a simple fix and takes about 20 minutes to do it on your own. All in all it has been a great reliable car. I got some weather tech mats for mine which will save the carpet.
I really appreciate your honesty. I've been thinking about a Crosstrek as my next car but your honest words just changed my mind. New Transmission at 60K - no thank you. Thats too bad as it looks like a neat car with some good aspects. I hope your Subaru lasts a good long time and what happened was a fluke.
@Nobby Barnes Not everyone drives manual
CVT's are just bad transmissions used by everyone because its easy to mate it with hybrid systems and its just cheaper than normal automatic. Get a manual, if you know how ot drive but didnt learn to drive stick - do so. Its really easy if you have already know to drive. Manual will never fail and wont need a repair of replacement unless you really abuse it and even then after severe and long abuse manuals need replacement after 150 miles, but only if minor issues with it being not as smooth to shift. If you are not bothered with it you dont need to replace it ever.
And if you drive nicely it will stay good for hundreds of tousands of miles/kilometres.
I have the same year, make, model & color/interior as your car and at 88,000 miles, I average 25 mpg combined mileage. The best I’ve ever gotten is 27 mpg combined (even though I drive mostly freeway miles). I have replaced the battery, tires and brake lights up to now. Lastly, I have an oil leak which requires me to as 1/2 quart of oil at about 2,500 mark after an oil change...so that’s what I am addressing now. I hope to keep it until it hits 200k miles (currently 88k at 4 years 7 months).

I've owned five Subarus, I currently own a 2005 Forester with 174k original engine and transmission (5 speed manual) and a 2018 Forester with 27k with a CVT. Both have been very good vehicles. It sounds like your car has been more problematic then any of mine have been.
I have a 2016 hyper blue limited. 42000 miles. Have just changed oil every 6000 miles(full synthetic). , brake fluid once, and new battery No other issues. Door dings? Don’t park close to people. You are right. The power in the car is the main issue. But it’s not a race car. I put lots of mods on mine. At Tires, white spar c o wheels, lift, cargo rack , spoiler, hood deflector ,.new speakers, subwoofer, blacked out lights. Id buy another crosstrek but get the bigger engine available now. Also 2023 should be completely new design!
I had a 2012 outback for ten years with 144,000 miles on it and never had an issue with the CVT transmission.
I have the same year my crosstrek is black with 13000 thousand miles only regular maintenance been camping with it and towing and trailer with inflatable boat with a 20hp mercury engine on it haven't had any problems 9 years owner..
I just got an orange 2014 crosstrek. So far I love it. Great look and is fast for a suv. Love it. Praying it remains good.

@@vanity68 my 2014 Forester has only 60k, but I’m planning on keeping it a long time, hopefully at least until 150k or so. Thankfully the transmission is perfectly fine, praying it stays that way.

Thanks for posting this. My daughter is living in Colorado Springs(I am in Texas) and I am shopping for her a car. I want her to have a Subaru because they are the experts in all-wheel drive. The older ones have pretty predictable head gasket and timing belt issues, but that's about it. Looks like these new ones are a mess. Thinking about a CRV or RAV4 or something.
Rav4 and CRV have reactive awd systems. Nowhere as capable as Subaru's symmetrical awd that is always engaged. Some of the 2.5 engines had head gasket issues but they are pretty solid cars. Personally I know more friends with Hondas and Toyotas with blown head gaskets. I never have had that on any of my Subies, but did in my Toyota Supra. I have a 2013 Crosstrek and I love it. And a 2006 Legacy GT.

They changed the design in 2018. 2013-2017 all looked the same.

Had two transmission replaced. At $10,000 per. It’s honestly a garbage car. Fan boys will often tell you that Subaru outsources the production of the CVT to Toyota but they don’t. It’s made in house by subsidiary called Fiji Heavy Industries. There are tons of people on the internet that talk out of their ass.

Yeah the earlier crostreks, forester and outback did have gearbox issues but that was probably down to their supplier (Jatco) i believe, but on the later models Subaru decided to build their own in-house. Im fortunate to have a diesel forester (🇬🇧 UK guy and UK option) with 6 speed manual transmission, influencedby a great guy known as Donald from Softroadingthewest. Your issue is the reason I didnt buy a cvt driven subaru. Anyway atleast now you should be trouble free-ish for a while. Keep adventuring lovely lady
First off it's NOT an SUV, it's a wagon with lifted suspension. I was going to get a 13 model and drive it to find out it had the infamous rear crossmember humm. The boxer engine is also known for bad head gaskets and overheating. Also, bad CVTs on all models but the manual is a gem. I Love the crosstrek though and the design as well as how practical it is. With all this said, still wont beat a Honda or Toyota as far as reliability and or quality. Just my 2 cents having owner both.
I have 2015 XV, pretty much the same , this car is not made for off road driving as a a main purpose, this is due to the CVT transmission, it’s a street car with some off road capabilities , after watching so many videos people make about replacing their CVT , I drive my car very careful and never push it since I’m out of warranty.
I don’t know what’s gotten into car manufacturers with this fragile transmission and put it in a SUV vehicle .
Anyway your review is awesome and what you’ve experienced is exactly like what I have .

New struts at 73,000 miles? Is this a dealership or a generic garage you are using. Might want to get a second (third?) opinion on some of these “regular maintenance” items. The new transmission at 60k made me jump!-Warranty or not. Yikes. Hope the car has been fine otherwise.

Some dealerships will often try to sell you things you don’t need. Even though the trans was still covered under warranty, they probably could’ve just changed the fluid and it would’ve fixed the problem. I’m fortunate enough to have a very honest mechanic that works on my car so I never take it to the dealership. I have a 2014 Forester with just over 60k and the trans is working fine.
My subie runs strong up hills...yes they show door dings ...we get about the same gas mileagei wish it had the tow package but I'm about to put one on it ....2015 Crosstrek xv
all my Subarus shows door dings compared to other cars, I think its the thinner sheet metal as part of there crumple safety feature, some how related, I'm sure. All my Subaru required more maintenance then my Toyota side owned, but I love the Subaru AWD and keeps me coming back. I keep a $1500 emergency vehicle fund available when owning a Subaru, always had a single repair in the first 150,000 miles that was between $1300-$1800

My mom drives a 2020 Subaru Outback XT Onyx Edition. A few weeks ago we got a mail from Subaru. That they is a recall for the transmission. What it said it could happen. That the chain could slip off.
I'm thinking of getting a 2020 forester sport! And now the crosstrek has more power for 2020! I belive in a few years there will be a turbo version for the crosstrek

Don' worry with a little of touch up paint your door dints and dings should polish out.

Every car brand has its issues. My Crosstrek is at 99k, and no issues what so ever. I worked at Subaru and people have put 200k on theirs with no problems. Just change the fluid when recommended.

I drove a 2020 or 2021 model Subaru XV for 2 weeks and loved it! For a lot of my driving life I've driven Outback's and Liberty's, always in Manual. I can't afford a new current model XV, so I've looked at older models. I'm hearing issues to do with the auto transmissions, but by close to 200,000 kms (125,000 miles) I figure it should have been sorted out. Just wondering two things on this era of XV: Does it have keyless start, or is it still the age old key in the ignition system? Secondly, how good is the reverse camera? In my job I'm required to do a lot of reversing, often in the dark, so a good reversing camera is now a must to avoid bumps and collisions.
I have a 2016. It’s a limited and has keyless entry ,keyless start, reverse camera is good. Screen not huge like some new cars but good enough
The 2014 model I bought has the key that you insert into the ignition.

Honda is notorious for dogshit automatic transmissions, for one example.
Most modern (japanese) CVT transmissions are even more off the charts for dogshit..
likely more the driver, or previous drivers and lack of maintenance than the car.. many of these do fine well over 150k

I have a 2013 Crosstrek. Purchased new. Had to repair the original transmission. Had to put a new transmission, 3 rear wheel bearings, Engine had to have new valve springs. Will not buy another one. Have better luck with Hondas.
I have a question, I just brought a used 2014 Crosstrek, it is presently 07/2021. The car has 57,0000 would it still be under warranty?
I'm thinking the warranty doesn't transfer but you can check by registering your vehicle at the subaru of america website.

I sat in a Crosstrek once that a dealership had left unlocked over a weekend and really liked the Crosstrek to but would still like to test drive one to compare. It’s probably gonna be a few more months before I actually buy, but as of right now I’m leaning towards the Forester! 👍
@@AMF96 awesome! I haven’t driven the Crosstrek either but I’ve heard they’re pretty fun to drive. I sometimes wish I had gone for the XT Forester but it’s quite a bit more expensive than the non-turbo and gets worse gas mileage, so it really depends on what you want. Mine has enough pickup in most situations but can be a bit sluggish going up-hill especially when there’s a lot of people and heavy equipment in the vehicle. Aside from that it’s a great car

MY 2014 XV is a DOG! putchaced with 50,000 miles. At 60k all 4 wheel bearings replaced. next came both front wishbones due to bushes rotted and only able to get the whole units. Next at 65k the main drive shaft bearing which meant the entire shaft replaced!!! and both front brake discs warped then took under body trays off to find EVERY pipe and cable fixing rotted away completely and the factory rust protection only on 50% of exposed steel so lots of rot. At 70k the rear trailing arms and every!!!! suspension bush rotted. The central locking occasionally locks me in or out and the fault cannot be traced. The worst car I ever bought.
Thanks for the information. I came across one for a great price but with 70,000 miles on it. It was a 2014 with a manual transmission l. I know the warranty will cover anything up to 100,000 miles, but that only gives me 30,000 miles left. I love that car, but might need to look for something with less miles. Thank you.

Mine is at 99k, and no issues at all.
If it’s a CVT the transmission fluid needs to be changed roughly every 25k miles, so if an individual doesn’t keep up with the maintenance it can lead to having to purchase a new transmission

the cvt's in nissan and subaru are known for being super unrealiable. Thats why i generally stay with stick shift manual or the oldschool torque converters if I need an auto.

One person's issues doesn't define them all. I have the same car. At 99k, and no issues at all. Just wear and tear stuff like brakes, wipers, rotors, tires. Plus not awd systems are the same. Subaru is top notch!
The ascent is the only subaru that seems to have problems now so good move. The rest are pretty reliable but 60000 miles transmission change is scary. I have a 2016 crosstrek. No problems. Just 42000 miles though.
I work in Honda for a while I love Honda and Crv as until now but for a change j bought used 2015 forester with 160k so far I had 275k already but only issue is burning oil so I have to check and tap it every 2 weeks which according to subaru dealership is normal..well even new crv had same issue anyways..
hopefully you see this and can answer a question for me! especially since this video is now over two years old. I am actually about to test drive a 2014 subaru crosstrek 2.0i premium edition. I've been doing some research and i already know to ask about the transmission and if the headers have been rebuilt but even if all that has already been done, the car is over 100,000 miles already which of course is a red flag. but i really really like the thing. As an owner of the vehicle do you think assuming the mechanical work is all up to date it's worth the risk? they're asking 12,400 which is already above my budget so if something goes wrong, well lets just say that would be super sucky. knowing what you know firsthand, if you were in my situation would you buy it?

I have a 2014 crosstrek the one big thing that has happened was I had to replace the transmission throttle body. It happened at 105000 miles a very expensive repair around 2 grand. Other than that just regular maintenance. I have always thought though that it goes through brakes and tires rather quickly. I now have 120000 miles on it and plan on trying for 200000.
