- Simple Tutorial on how to make a bootable USB for system rescue disk, which is compatible with UEFI as well as Legacy mode.
1. First keep a copy of the systemrescue disk ISO ready with you.
2. Attach your USB drive.
3. Open diskpart (via command prompt), select the USB disk (number will be obvious based on size), perform a 'clean', create a 1GB FAT32 partition, assign it a letter.
4. Download system rescue disk installer, as instructed on the website.
5. Create a temporary directory 'Temp' on Desktop.
6. Run the installer.
7. Select the directory created in the previous step.
8. Extract ISO contents.
9. Select the USB device and then click Install.
10. Open the file \boot\grub\grub-$version-number.cfg
inside the USB drive.
11. Replace all instances of the string "isolinux" with "syslinux"
12. Reboot!

Guys, I made this video in Aug, 2015. A lot has changed since then. Although this method may still work, I would recommend you to go through the latest instructions at www.system-rescue-cd.org/Installing-SystemRescueCd-on-a-USB-stick/ first. If they don't work out, only then try this video.
In case you face any issues while going through this video, please leave a comment below and I'll try to get back to you as soon as possible. You can also reach out to me at: asknjw.herokuapp.com/ and I'll reply there as soon as possible. I don't bite!
Hello! I need your help, my acer laptop says "No Bootable device" and when I try in Legacy mode (Usb recovery drive) and all the codes doesn't work. Please help, I need my laptop for the online classes 😭

Hey I have followed all the steps outline in the video to the point yet when I boot into system rescue the terminal comes up but it is all greyed out, all the gui elements didnt seem to load properly. Any idea why?
+Tidsuo At 7:28, I select the 5th option. You could try selecting the 1st option. (No GUI, but you still get a terminal :) )
Hi, i would like to use a SSD instead of an usb stick, at least for pc will increase a lot the speed and the chances to get enough space to save many things inside it...; it's possible?
I'm stuck. As soon as I try to boot into sysrescue, I get an infinite bootloop. It's just switching on, off, on, off... What is that? Boot in UEFI, using a Sony Vaio, trying to dual-boot with kali.
Try any other UEFI bootable Linux media. For example ubuntu
Hello, at 9:13 you reboot into a different boot menu. How do you get there? After rebooting I see the same menu as before (the one we can see at 7:28 in the video). Is there a key to press and get that blue menu with the "framebuffer console in high resolution" option? The regular menu doesn't have it. Thank you.
+Julián Dupuy I am just proving to the youtube viewers that this method works both, for UEFI as well as Legacy/CSM modes. At 7:28, I boot in UEFI mode and at 9:13, I boot in Legacy Mode. (The switch is made inside BIOS Settings) :)
Also, what activates the Legacy mode when you reboot? Is it the "framebuffer console in high resolution"? Rebooting with the other options I still have UEFI.
+Julián Dupuy In BIOS settings, I have to turn off UEFI and enable Legacy support. If your mother supports CSM, or supports both modes at the same time, and let's say, you are booting from the USB Flash Drive, then two options will be visible in the Boot Menu, one showing only the name of the USB Drive, the second showing the name of the USB drive, with UEFI prepended to it. What is your computer make/model?
+Nehal J Wani Oh I see now, ok! I didn't realize you went to the BIOS. My BIOS has "UEFI and CSM". It was originally CSM, when updating to Windows10 it messed up and I ended with a RAW partition and 0x000000f error. It's a Samsung NP300E4C notebook, spinning HD. I used to have fast bios enabled too at the moment of failure. I found in a website that disabling fast bios, secure boot and OS in UEFI and CSM would help, but it didn't.
+Julián Dupuy Did you run chkdsk on the RAW partition?
I will use 8gb usb for this. Making a 1gb primary partition is it possible to bring it back to 8 gb?
Yes, it is possible. Just extend the partition, or delete the partition table and recreate it and then create the 8GB partition from scratch.
hlo i have a prob... can i dual boot by choosing windows as default os???
Yeah it's possible. You need to modify your bootloader config for that. Personally, I like grub2.
I've got Uefi without legacy option with secure boot, I want to boot into usb Kaspersky rescue disk but I've got some problems, go manufacture model pavilon x2 10 - n150nw, boot set into usb diskette, but always it boots in Windows when I type f10 show bios menu f9 boot option - I can't see my pendrive only In uefi Kingston rescue but I can't run nothing, any hint or suggest? Thanks anyway.
Try disabling secure boot.
Tried, but not work.
Well, I don't have much experience with 'Kaspersky rescue disk'. May I ask why you want to boot from that? Maybe there is another solution which I can help you with?
It is live cd with scanner, and I saw in official website it isn't compalibity with uefi.
It's the best solution for deleting malware what locks your computer.
What's the original problem that you are trying to solve?
do I create the bootable USB for systemresque disk on a separate PC or on the same PC, which I want to make a Dual Boot Win8.1/KaliLin on? Cause I can't do it on the one with the dual boot... but still I want to ask?
Yeah you can do it on any PC.
Also, if you are doing this for installing Kali Linux, then try using the Ubuntu installation media.
Nehal J Wani thanks!
Nehal J Wani and this is not gonna affect the other PC's windows, it will run normally?
Yeah, it won't affect
Hello! I have a problem. When i boot to usb in efi mode it shows me grub. I selected config manually and it says a lot of uknown commands and some strange symbols. P.S. now you dont need to replace isolinux to syslinux. P.P.S. when i manually doing stuff in grub it says invalid magic number, and when i type initrd it says uknown ... 0x..... Can you help me?
Nevermind! New version is a piece of crap! 4.5.4 worked!
+mrsteyk (Александр Герман) now it says error: cannot mount sysrcd.dat
+mrsteyk (Александр Герман) Please follow the video correctly step by step and then tell the exact error you face.
Nehal J Wani i gave up on that, thanks for reply! (it was needed only for gentoo installation, funny situation :-) )
+mrsteyk (Александр Герман) Now I am interested in your situation. Could you please share it?
I don't why but SystemRescueCd installer for Windows was not working for me.... always getting error of "select a proper boot device!"
So I used another software - linuxliveusb mentioned on the same site and it worked for me!
Thanks!
Are you sure you launched it with admin privileges?
hmm.. don't know! but problem solved now as u know
Okay!
The most confusing video I've seen, a visual kaleidoscope of confusion and annoyance.
+Chas Giver What is the confusing part? Ask away!
@@NehalJWani HYou have a bali bali voice.... use it...
In the last step after typing "echo let's reboot into legacy mode and verify" the quote> is not going. Its there for more than 30 minutes
You don't have to type that. I typed that in the video to show what I was doing.
i cant figure out why it says not authenticated. Its not booting in uefi. Please help
Try disabling secure boot in your BIOS/UEFI settings.
Thanks a lot for replying :) But if I disable secure boot in bios settings, it boots automatically in the legacy mode. But in the kali linux installation video you asked to ensure it boots in UEFI. Can i follow the same procedures in legacy mode? Please help. I have been stuck at this for days. Thanks in advance
That is weird. What is the make/model of your computer? Also, if you have come from the kali linux video, try using booting the ubuntu installation media in UEFI mode too.
Hi.. I followed all the steps but whenever i reboot i come back to windows... also.. the iso image i have is sysrescuecd-i686-6.1.6 for 32 bit... and when i changed the name.. there wasn't any isolinux in the file.. please tell me where i went wrong.. thanks...!!
Now I downloaded with the exact iso file as yours systemrescuecd-x86-4.5.4 which I found on this site: archive.org/details/systemrescuecd-x86-4.5.4 ... changed isolinux.. it still does not reboot to open that menu... it opens on windows... Please help sir... thank you...!!!
@@sthevar26 What is your computer make/model?
@@NehalJWani My laptop is Dell Inspiron ... Intel core processor 2 duo... 32 bit... Bios does not support EFI... Thanks for the quick reply...
@@NehalJWani so i tried using the legacy version systemrescuecd-x86-5.3.2... I have installed it in my usb... I am yet to reboot...
@@sthevar26 Any luck with the 32 bit version?
how can i use this to make my RAW disk become NTFS again? :(
For RAW partition, you should try running chkdsk on it. If it fails, then you can try to recover the files using testdisk. If that also fails, then you can format the partition and reinstall Windows (loss of data)
i just run testdisk 500GB > Intel > Analyse = Partition Read Error, After quick search it says no partition found :(
Bad luck buddy. You HDD maybe on the verge of death :'( Run a complete scan on it to see if it has any bad sectors.
You can use the badblocks utility to do so using Linux
i guess so...how do i run a complete scan tho?
1)First keep a copy of the system rescue disk ISO ready with you.
How to do that?
Download it from here: sourceforge.net/projects/systemrescuecd/files/sysresccd-x86/4.9.2/systemrescuecd-x86-4.9.2.iso/download
ty..I will contact you again ,if I get into a problem
Hi Dears, I have the boot files issue and unable to fix it. Can anyone help me out if possible. I tried almost everything. In your videos, but maybe There is an error from my end.
Please share the exact error.

I have windows file in the Hard Disk, but as soon as the laptop starts. It Says" NO Operating system Found.
When I attempt to recover or repair, I says harddisk is locked.

how do I make it 1GB and FAT32? do I use disk management? nevermind I asked b4 watching
Yes.
a while back you recommended me to do this, but now that i have this bootable usb...how do i recover my windows 8.1 partition that is missing
+Barknuckles Boot using this USB, run testdisk, and try to recover data from your partition. See the website of testdisk for a tutorial on how to use it.
would you mind giving me a direct link? im having trouble navigating the site
+Barknuckles www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step
+Nehal J Wani in all honesty, this is way out of my element and the instructions are pretty confusing. I've got the boot usb and I'm into the test disk on my Raid 0 setup. But I'm not sure what to do to recover a deleted windows 8 partition
+Barknuckles Well, in that case, if you can attach this HDD to a computer running Windows and install www.diskinternals.com/partition-recovery/, it might be easier for you.
cannot find/ sysrcd.dat on devicesso how to??Can I Help You??So, I am Korean
+허승훈 Are you using USB 3.0 ?

I cant edit the grub file. Just a bunch of gibberish
It seems that you are editing the wrong file. What is the name of the file that you are trying to edit?
Grubdisk
That is not the file that I edit.
All the files are listed differently on mine. I downloaded the system rescue disk from the site you get the installer from.
Nope. See this: picpaste.com/pics/Screenshot_from_2016-07-15_18-07-50-liEeYvRE.1468586306.png
