Fuck me that was amazing.
Say what you want about electric cars, but you can't deny that performance.
jimmy we know you can beat that record
Try it please but at zolder
Hello *Britcar series driver*
Wassup Jimmy, nice seeing you here....
sounded great - whAt!
The car being electric and quieter allows to hear the air being displaced, is the first time that I can get a sensation through the sound of how much the aero is working.
True. I loved that part
Whooosh!
That's actually beautiful. Thanks for that.
Its not the aero, its the motor/gearbox assembly
@@krismoe31 it's the air. Air makes a lot of noise when it's violently displaced.
Ridiculous...the torque figures on these E engines are crazy too..
The torque is the entire reason he beat the record.
Electric cars are unbeatable in short straights, but they run out on longer ones.
It's not an engine it's a motor
@@Ben-cx5qp That's not standard English usage of the term engine, just a definition arbitrarily assigned in some fields. The word engine comes is from the Latin word for machine(A device that converts one form of energy into another), "ingenium", and can technically be used to refer to anything that converts any form of energy into mechanical energy.
@Kronos Electric motors can also now easily surpass combustion engines in peak power output/speed too, you just need huge heavy batteries if you want them to be portable(And go any meaningful distance) with current tech.
@americanvillageidiot Electric will add a lot of weight. WRX cars are usually as light s possible
High torque low rpm=low torque high rpm,
Btw tesla engines don’t have insane torque compared to slower cars
When the car is accelerating faster it means it produces more power at that moment
It’s 650Nm
Tesla has over 1000Nm but slightly lower power
Ev’s are faster because of the torque/power curve and because they have less drivetrain losses (fixed gear transmission)
This is what Formula E should be. Cars like this racing on proper tracks where you actually have room to make an overtake.
Yes
Agreed, but when it's outputting that much power, there is no way that can be raced for any decent distance. It's meant purely for hill climbs.
How fast are the formula Es? Yeah they should race these or cars like the NIO EP9
antwango FE top speed is around 170mph now
It’s getting there, the tech keeps improving at a decent rate
This car wouldnt survive a whole race. But considering how far FE has brought EVs, it won't be long

modrnlol it’s cool. But ICE-powered vehicles are still simply faster. Hybrids are the future of motorsport, not EVs.
This car is Based on the same chassis 919 evo is based, yet it has 400 HP less, and weighs 250 kg more and has a loooot smaller range - hence why they had to limit the top speed of this car to complete the whole lap of Nordschelife before they run out of juice.
@@ErwinLiszkowicz Hey, I'm cool with that too! I'm a lover of everything auto related and enjoy seeing what these manufacturers come up with.
definitely not whats all about, people are paying 400k+ for analog porsches.
@@ErwinLiszkowicz exactly, EVs are superior on small tracks with short straights just because of their insane accleration but on longer races there is no way at the moment to beat a petrol engine
@@rumbepack I guess that depends on what we define "What it's all about" as. Obviously if I had the money I would still be buying the Million dollar Ferrari's that exist. I'm just talking a bout racing. Secondly, it's okay to enjoy the technological advances that are being put on display here and still love things that run on gasoline... it's okay.
Man i remember that sound.......it was my childhood....RC car.
It reminds me of the wrc rally cars from the 90's, the sound is a bit similar, some Turismo cars also have a distinguish sound that seems to be electric but louder.

919 hybrid evo, we need you back, SERIOUSLY.
No, it is to slow, stuck in the past uses crutches to be fast with all that weight hanging out its ass end. Looks like an old 1950s VW cutsy bug with a tacky body kit glued on.
It will not win on this short track. 919 hybrid evo is better on the Nurburgring just because it could reach higher top speeds on the long straights. But as far as acceleration goes, a pure electric car is unbeatable. Top speed will be solved in the future, by adding one more gear, so we will usually see 350-400kph on electric cars.
@@vladmihai306 rimac concept two
@@Controldo I know, that is an example. But it is not yet available. Still, I am very surprised about the fact that people use this no top end reason like it is an unsolvable issue with electric cars. An ice car with one gear would be amazingly slow, so the fact that electric cars went so far from a performance standpoint with only one gear, it shows just how much potential there is.
@@AzathothsAlarmClock I am talking about normal engines, not thousands of HP. Sure, those ones can use one gear and spin the tires from standstill, but a V8 engine wouldn't. Just try a 0-max acceleration run in say, 4th gear and see how fast (slow) it is.
0:31, that sound.. . 😳

@@justincharles6585 Still not a really impressive difference between those times, considering how quick/fast the McMurtry Speirling actually moved. It looked TWICE as fast compared to the ID.R, yet it was only a 10th of a second quicker...
@@petercsigo3314 Actually over 8/10ths of a second faster.
@@petercsigo3314 Go back to school.
So does this mean that the F1 cars of present and past could take part in the shootout now? Since the record that Heidfeld set in a mclaren F1 car years ago was deemed too fast and unsafe.
For those who don't know that record was 41.6 seconds. This is faster but I think the fact that it's a closed wheel/cockpit car is deemed safer regardless.
If you look at both replays it is easy to tell that this run looks so much safer than the f1 one. Simply f1 cars do not behave well on that bumpy surface
idk they might just up the security on this too? I mean if this thing flies wild there could likely be a bunch of fatal accidents in the audience
Kovalainen went under 40 seconds

👍🤣 Just had to see this one again. The McMurty seems so much faster although it's just by a blink. Maybe it's the smaller scale. Both are epic!
@@Elmo6855
Theoretically the McMurty should be a lot faster. Just in acceleration from 0-100 km/h; 1,5 versus 2,25 seconds.
More power, 1000 hp per ton, more downforce. I was also surprised that it went less than a second faster than the IDR they again that's still remarkable for such a short track.
L🤫L
Absolutely insane. Congratulations Volkswagen
BLOODY HELL if it' s fast!
Well... damn!!!! Under 40. The benchmark's been set!
The 40 second wall would probably have been broken already if F1s were allowed to really go for it. They aren't allowed since the previous record was set, and that's why it resisted for such a long time.

Could I have 2 pints of milk and 6 eggs, Tuesday and Saturday please?
Incredible how many people blast this car for being no match to "real" race cars... I think everybody should start to remember we're talking about a technology that's only been seriously picked up and developed again a couple of years ago...wait where EVs will be in 2030...
this car has already dismantled every record for petrol cars, only hybrid is faster i think, the 919 evo tribute version of porsches lmp1 car
Simply because F1 aren't allowed to go for the record anymore, which makes them look slower than this IDR. Otherwise the record would have been beaten a few times since 20 years ago.
I agree completely. Faster than a petrol car has ever gone... and new technology.
There is no reason to believe that batteries will have anything close to the energy density of petroleum by 2030 required to sustain longer races.
This run proved that this car, especially built for hill climb purpose, with probably just enough battery in order to save weight, can run this faster that a F1 car could 20 YEARS AGO.
Doesn’t prove a lot. The IDR has yet to challenge a record set by a modern F1.
Wow! As much as we all love ICE's, I think we can all agree electric is incredible.
Incredibly....... Boring.
@Papa Dragon well no cause were gonna run out of oil/climate change but EV's have much better acceleration and efficiency the only thing they lack at the moment is top speed
Not really. Electric cars are good for hillclimbs because they don't need too end but they're acceleration is an advantage. On any track electric cars will be slower.
@Papa Dragon Hybrids are amazing. P1, LaFerrari, 918 and of course F1 cars.
@Papa Dragon Who will produce millions of tons of these biofuels needed everey day on earth and with which energy ?! Mankind need 100 mio Barrel oil every day !
There's just something eairy about it, It's insane how quick it is by 2050 EV's will shatter lap time records.
Imagine supercars with a top speed of around 300mph or higher. Although modern bearings will be a problem.
Why wait 31 years?
If it's about lap time only, BEVs are at an advantage actually. The battery can be tiny. And we know they can be plenty sparky to get this sort of power for a short burst.
Look at this run. The tech is here NOW.
This VW is a hasted build upon an existing chassis. Not too high tech. Very much brute force over finesse.
AWD is a breeze in BEVs. On such a tight track that helps a lot. We can'pt say no quick cars have gone up here, plenty of F1 cars that had pace close to today's F1 cars went up. Even 919 Evo.
A well designed BEV drivetrain is just really controllable. Don't forget Rimac shared some magic sauce for this car.
The tech is here to create a racing formula that laps about Formula 2 pace (similar to Le Mans winning pace) and does an F2 length race. With a battery swap during the pit stop.
The battery would not need to be very big, perhaps smaller even than Formula E. The tyres would be wide slicks (FE has narrow road tires with tread pattern). AWD. from two small motors. Proper aerodynamics such as this VW or say the 919 Evo. Weight somewhere between F1 and Formula E thanks to better materials and effort that put towardFormula E (it's done on the cheap, for looks only)
It's all about politics and funding now. Formula E got a long term BEV open wheel monopoly from FIA and I think the ground rule was to be SLOW. Above all SLOW. Most BEV fans accept any logic thrown at them.
@@SeraphoftheRoundTable Koenigsegg Jesko may achieve that within the next years. With a Rimac collab it wil be relatively easy (for these engineering gods) to put a BEV drivertrain in there that does sprint to 300mph. It's all about desire and funding.
Be aware, until a short century ago, BEVs were the ones setting top speed records, not petrol cars. One can speculate why BEVs just died. Even Mrs Ford (Clara, wife of Henry) preferred her nippy Detroit Electric over a Ford Model T.
@@SeraphoftheRoundTable You mean 300 burgers per freedom?
@@Cloxxki EVs died because of the longer distances one could achieve back then (even until recently, actually) with a diesel/petrol car by just slapping a bigger tank on the car. Also, the oil industry rose to power by just selling petrol cheap af and making deals with big manufacturers like Ford to smash the EV competition.
Electrical engine are monsters when it comes to acceleration. The only thing holding them back is energy storage.
Someday, these cars would be breaking records on race track that are currently held by F1 cars.
They won't...F1 cars are limited by their ruleset. The could go 10 secs faster on track like Silverstone if they were really unleashed.
it's not enegine
Its not "electrical engine" it's a battery and an electrical motor. Motor and Engine are two different things
That's not the only thing by far
Despite what you think EV motors cannot hold high speeds nor will they ever unlike an engine with a gear ratio. Should look at Formula E ratings compared to real Formula 1.
I imagine in the future that guys who would like to build their fancy "sleeper" toyota prius with that kind of electric engine
The right-hander at 00:35 is pure perfection
