Very experimental but very well balanced, maybe not someone's taste but undeniably great in it's production, don't know how to say but everything hits so well and the timing is perfection. I love Magdalene more as a fleshed and polished record, it's deeper and of course the best she's ever made but LP1 is just damn satisfying experimentation.
Twigs also make more sense when you understand that for most of her teenage years she was working with jazz ensembles so that elements of improvisation and surprising or unconventional choices are ingrained into her artistic fingerprint. She also is very much a performance artist and dancer so in a live context it makes for a whole experience.
@@Novemberxo artists like Arca (who produced the record in the video, her solo stuff is a lot more experimental), Autechre, Ash Koosha, Nurse With Wound, Xiu Xiu, Prurient, Oneohtrix Point Never, Iglooghost, and Death Grips are just a few. I’m still in the middle of diving deeper into experimental music and even with a few of these artists I only know a handful of tracks but worth looking into for sure. Just having a look for yourself too can be fun. Artists who are as experimental as Twigs include Animal Collective, Björk and Clarence Clarity
One note that kind of makes more sense with her experimental beats: she's a dancer before anything, so in the production process of this album she said if she couldn't dance to any of the music she would fix it or scrap it. dancing is, and probably might be, the main vehicle for her music and that's why some of the beats are the way they are
Well, when you have never heard anything similar, you will struggle to find a proper comparison anywhere inside your musical vocabulary. Go listen to Steve Reich - "Sextet" and tell me what it sounds like. [I'm taking a shot in the dark. You could totally know your stuff and could potentially find a completely appropiate comparison.]
I actually like the awkward spaces in LP1 because they sort of symbolize the emptiness in the relationship. Twigs is very invested in her partner, but the partner is not invested, so there are gaps, as twigs sing in Pendulum. Very reminiscient of Hide and Water Me. I think twigs is master of the feeling of emptiness.
it’s interesting to see a producer’s (who’s not entirely keen to this genre) perspective on FKA twigs music especially considering how her sound is so unique and out of the ordinary. the amount of intricate details she and her producers use in her songs are mind blowing. all of the discomfort or sorrow you hear from her productions are intentional and is what suppose to evoke how she was feeling. excited for you to dive into more of her discography especially M3LL155X & MAGDALENE
"It's not about the crowd to performer experience..." Ya need to go watch some live performances of Twigs. It is ALL performance. She's blowing all the other artists outta the water.
You should most definitely react to Arca's stuff she did basically all the production of this album and has produced for Bjork and Kanye. She is truly a revolutionary artist.
her whole point is to make futuristic music and I think change can only be achieved through rebellion and making people uncomfortable. that's my take on it at least. I really like your comments, as a new producer I find them very insightful. Keep up please. I'd love it if you reacted to MAGDALENE by FKA twigs, it's less experimental but also really interesting.
It's a very intricate album. Rhythmic syncopation, weird tempos, synth layers, drumfills all over, vocal processing, chaotic, abrupt mood swings....it's very spacious at the same time and lyrics say so much with so little. I love and yet I barely know it cuz there's always something new with every listen.
Someone else said this, but you would absolutely love Pop 2 by Charli XCX. One of the most futuristic and groundbreaking pop records of all time. It's a true classic that bends genre and solidified Charli as a queen of hyperpop. It's very different, but it's a great diving point for the rest of her amazing discography that gets more experimental as time goes on. Highly recommend
I'm really hoping he'll react to it uwu. it's one of my favourite album ever. Even when it's from the late 2017, it still sounds really refreshing and different to this day!
This is one of my favourite albums ever but i can see where you're criticisms are coming from. I think you would prefer her new album Magdalene its experimental but it definetly has more structure that i think it would give you what you want. Check out cellophane at least cause its basically a sparse piano ballas that really shows off her voice.
To be fair I only liked two or three songs from lp1 on my first listen, over time i have grown to love most of them and same with all EPs. Magdalene tho was incredible from the get go.
her albums are also growers.. the first time I listened to this record I also felt super uncomfortable but something always brought me back and now she's one of my favorite albums
I think the album is a journey from chaos to structure. It begins with a hellish, chaotic intro and it ends on a more or less "normal" R&B melody. Her projects after this one ("melissa" ep and "magdalene") are more structured but not less experimental you should defenitely give them a try
I really wanna see what he thinks of Sevdaliza’s album Ison, extremely underrated and has a similar vibe to FKA Twigs and it’s one of my favourite albums to go to in terms of atmosphere and interesting production
Blake, you'll LOVE "M3LL155X" by FKA Twigs!! She mixed the best aspects of her sound in that one!! Please, react to it, you'll not regret it! M3LL155X also accompains an amazing audiovisual as well.
I’ve been a fan of flat twigs for years. Ever since I discovered her when I was in high school , and one thing I realized is the longer I listen to a track, especially with those awkward pauses; the more I wanna hear her sing. It makes me crave her voice more idk if that makes sense.
so ready for magdalene. it's going to blow your mind. ngl LP1 doesn't do it for me. MAGDALENE and M3LL155X are masterpieces (edit: 11 months later and i love LP1)
I got into Twigs with LP1, so Magdalene had to fight a bit for my affection, even though I love the chamber pop elements. That being said, I consider them both great albums now. Me a year ago definitely agreed with you that LP1 was the better album by a significant amount
Hearing Blake say this is the "most experimental thing" he has ever listened to made me scream. Whelp, there's goes all the recommendations I would have made.
Well, it's not that uncommon that an experienced producer finds something out of their typical genres, completely alien. An example: Tori Amos did a cover of "Raining Blood" and reportedly Slayer, of anyone that could have said it, found it disturbing.
You should definitely react to her most recent album "Magdalene". I feel its still experimental but not as experimental, I personally prefer it a lot more than LP1.
I'll never understand the perspective of wanting the actually interesting part of the song to be more subtle and in the background. Like any time I try to listen to generic pop music there's MAYBE a hint of something unique, and the rest of the sound is just what everyone else is doing at the moment. Like where's the flavour? People are really out here listening to bland unseasoned-chicken-breast sounding music
I think you actually touched on it near the start of your reaction, when you mentioned the comparisons to choreography. FKA twigs origins was in dance, this is probably where she gets her perception of rhythm. I absolutely loved this album when it came out, and it's still one I love revisiting. I just clicked off this video immediately when you became impatient and wanting the hook to come at a specific time into the song, which to me sounds absolutely ridiculous. You don't judge a song by when certain parts come in. You judge it by it's flow, or intent, etc, and not by when things are "supposed" to happen, because not all music follows the same basic structures. Just thought it a little too subjective, kinda basic(again) and while that's ok, it's kinda MEH as well. Makes me think that you've only heard chart music. I'm sure (hope) you get more objective throughout the video
Pretty typical. People expect things to be a certain way and when it's not it hurts their brain 😂 To stay within those expectations is incredibly limiting... Hopefully by now he has listened to enough "weird" music and expanded his horizons.
I think this is the most influencial album in my personal music taste and just in general. Love magdalene. Didnt do nearly as much for me tho then lp1 and ep2 did

I can see you’re a man of taste, since you were able to appreciate something like this. 3 albums I think you would have a fun time reacting to would be Vespertine by Björk, Take Me Apart by Kelela, and The Quanta Series by Káryyn - they all demonstrate deft craftsmanship and a definite auteur kind of vibe with beautiful music that’s intricate
You cannot throw something like this at someone who says that THE most commercial Pink Floyd album was their weirdest experience with music. May I suggest Aquarius by Tinashe, again? Start with that and then go for Banks. Björk. Next, try Glasser. After that you might have the patience for Marie Hendrickson. Or go right to Aphex Twin, I guess. Honestly, I only enjoy half of the things I just mentioned. And this album right here is also only half in there.
THANK YOU for listening to experimental stuff its so fun to nerd out with you over crazy sound design. Definitely listen to twigs next ep, or react to the epic 15 min long video, and def listen to MAGDALENE for the evolution, I think it'll hit that middle ground for you (and the title track is like glitchy trip hop Sade for sure).
I highly recommend listening to MAGDALENE by FKA twigs! It’s probably one of my favourite albums of all time. A completely different vibe from LP1. I also really like her EP, M3LL155X it has some of my top faves on there!
Please, "how i'm feeling now" by Charli XCX!!!!!!!!! (I also recommend "BEFORE LOVE CAME TO KILL US+" by Jessie Reyez. It's different and underappreciated. 🙂)
Another thing to consider along with all the excellent comments on this video; The experimental electronic music scene in the UK and Ireland is both massive and very concentrated. FKA Twigs contemporaries are producers like SOPHIE, Charli XCX, the whole PC music label, alongside other genres such as grime, hard drum, hardcore, etc. All these producers and genres use drum sounds often not found in the US outside of maybe Detroit and a few other places. The utilisation of sounds never heard before is a big part of electronic music in this part of the world, and a bit of a marker of skill and talent.
Also, a sense of discomfort is a common feature of music made in the queer music scene, something Twigs is very much a part of. This is something we can also see in SOPHIE’s music. This also applies to music made by women in a male dominated industry, music made by black, brown or Asian people, music made by people with disabilities etc. The sense of alienation and discomfort cause by out of pitch sounds or vocals, tempo switching etc, speaks to a sense of the same in society; not “fitting in” with conventions is part of the musics aesthetic, an aesthetic forced upon “minorities” in a white pop world.
please do Oil of Every Pearls Un-Insides by SOPHIE, it’s a truly artistic masterpiece with hard and gritty synths and amazing vocals each track has something to pull you in
Also, I think nothing really deep about production. twigs just love to tweak knobs and hear the sounds. She also loves reversing some drum hits, impacts and instrumentation. Definitely love pitch shifting too. She discussed in one interview that she likes manipulating a hi-hat and toms, stretching it, pitching it down just to find something that catch her attention. I love both her LPs but I think MAGDALENE would be the middle ground for structured yet experimental. She incorporates more acoustic instruments like in home with you and cellophane. Worth checking out
Your insight was super interesting! You would probably really love her latest mixtape "caprisongs". It's waaaay more poppy and structured while staying pretty left-field and forward-thinking. Would love to see you react to that after this
Yas sir! Another amazing review! Didn’t expect you to cover FKA Twigs but loved it nonetheless. Always exciting to see you listening/review something more experimental and off-the-wall 🥰
I could be wrong but I think in an interview FKA mentioned she had some kind of hearing impairment issue and as someone who has a heavy hand in her music production I’m sure that affects the pitch/tone of a lot of the elements. 10/10 album of me.
FKA’s first album was VERY experimental. It’s not everyones cup of tea. Her most recent album was more structured.
I think Magdalene is even more experimental.
imo m3ll155x is her least experimental work, but still very unique
Very experimental but very well balanced, maybe not someone's taste but undeniably great in it's production, don't know how to say but everything hits so well and the timing is perfection.

The experimental electronic music scene in the UK and Ireland is both massive and very concentrated.
The sense of alienation and discomfort cause by out of pitch sounds or vocals, tempo switching etc, speaks to a sense of the same in society; not “fitting in” with conventions is part of the musics aesthetic, an aesthetic forced upon “minorities” in a white pop world.
he's gonna be scalped listening to arca's music.
please do Oil of Every Pearls Un-Insides by SOPHIE, it’s a truly artistic masterpiece with hard and gritty synths and amazing vocals each track has something to pull you in
Also, I think nothing really deep about production. twigs just love to tweak knobs and hear the sounds. Worth checking out
omg you have to do MAGDALENE now, it's her newest album
she is not of norms otherwise she'll just sound regular
this album is so good i almost forgot
U need to react to "oil of every pearl's un-insides" by SOPHIE [2] You'll love how she turns pop into POP
imagine if he reacted to SOPHIE’s OOEPUI or Arca’s KicK iii 🤭
51:03 ik i’m a few years late and im sure you already know but they actually have a song together now
Your insight was super interesting!
React to What's your pleasure by Jessie Ware
I can tell by the recommendations and the recent reactions that the gays are out and stanning in full force and I am livinggggggg for it 🤣
her latest album MAGDALENE is her magnum opus and it's more well put together

Please do a reaction to oil of every pearl's un-insides by SOPHIE
when you listen to lights on after so many months again wow does it fucking slipy and glorp. im chenched and denched
Would be crazy to see a pop producer's reaction to 1000 Gecs by 100 Gecs, one of the most acclaimed experimental pop albums of the last couple years
Twigs: Eat me out
Blake: It's a metaphor about capitalism
