liked the video, and liked the 300k miles and stick shift truck. I also liked painting the date on the cam "gear", though I would have written the mileage, too. A couple corrections: you don't need to bathe all the cam bolt threads in LocTite, just a few drops on the engaged part of clean, dry threads is sufficient. Heat does not "activate" the threadlocker. Lack of oxygen hardens the threadlocker. Sufficient heat actually melts the threadlocker. I think I would have gone with a new oil pump, were I that far into it, but that's just me. Anyway thanks for the video.
Damn Buddy your truck is a great example of the great trucks Dodge used to Make..love my 04 ram 4x4 2500 5.7 no major issues with my truck iam original owner..167k miles..👊
I thought I was the only other one with a 04 dodge 5.7 hemi with 286,000 and no problems original drivetrain 5 speed auto still shifting strong own since new.
Oil pump: Next time remove all 4 bolts from oil pump and twist clockwise. You will then be able to get a box end wrench in there. Never touching the oil pan.
I was able to get the pickup tube bolt out this way, but it’s not easy. After I had it slightly loosened I looped safety wire around the bolt between the head and the captured washer and was able to use that as a “wrench” to work it out without dropping it into the oil pan. Took a half hour. Haven’t put it back together yet...not sure how I’ll do that but I’m so not going to deal with dropping that oil pan.
With all the folks I've seen with valve guide and lifter problems, its nice to see one actually make it to 300,000 miles. I've got an '07 with 175,000 miles. Everything about it is fine today but I feel like I'm driving a time bomb hearing all the troubles that others have had.
Jon - Thanks for commenting. Nothing lasts forever right?. By preventative Maintenace to key areas such as timing chain, valve springs, guides and faithful oil changes my vehicles go the distance. This one just got sold for $3K and had 345,000 miles on her.
Jon Dison ...Hmm I’ll have to look at my other videos to answer mileage on valve spring breakage question. I want to say like 250K. Never left me stranded though. Take a look at my first valve spring vid. The second one was to change the seals which I should have done the first go. Valve guides are done by a machine shop and yes to your question about having to pull the heads for replacement. Valve seals can be done like my video shows.
grumpy old fart good luck! Never allow early hemi engine to overheat. The engine in this video never was operated with cooling problems and never once was operated overheated.
That doesn't look too bad. Thx. I have an 05. Treats me better than my ex ever did. Only been towed 1x. The starter w/o any warning took a dump. Salt Here in N NY eats corrodes everything. Replaced water pump bcuz salt ate thru steel line. Liquid steel, & Duct tape got me home.🤣
i just did this job and your video was super helpfil man. Thanks! Something i noticed was my dodge factory service manual said to align the single colored link with the 12 o'clock position of the camshaft sprocket and the dual colored links were aligned with the 6 o'clock position of the crank sprocket. this is reverse of what you show in the video.
I've got a 2014 Charger R/T with the 5.7 Liter Hemi engine, it has about 65k miles on it. Haven't had any problems out of it whatsoever, I hope that dodge exceeds their reputation with this engine, I want it to last as long as possible!
Change the oil change the oil change the oil. LOL. Seriously Change the oil faithfully. Don't the hemi overheat ever. If it does??? Sell it. Good luck.
Awesome video... Mines a 2003 1500, 333k, and just like yours, I've never had to have it towed... Just bought a new dodge ram 1500 2017, identical to my 03, now I have twins lol... Have the gasket behind the timing cover gone out and I think I'm going to replace everything I can going in to get it including the timing... Awesome video though... Amigo desde venezuela te pregunto: Cambiaste el refigerante., la bomba de agua nueva? Solo cambiaste el tensor roto y los demás componentes también los cambiastes? Que aceite pusiste a? Y saber si ella te soñaba feo?
I have a question for you I got a Hemi 5.7 2007. My oil pressure gauge quit working wife was driving home from Tulsa. So I ordered a new one online from California and it arrived today. I slipped the old one out new one in and plugged it up. Cleared the computer and started truck still reads no oil pressure but runs great. I am stumped. Was wondering if you had any ideas is there a fuse i looked in fuse box but didn't see anything.
Hmm. Not a clue. Did you join a forum yet? I am on Dodgeforum.com as well as one Cummins. Most oil pressure indications on cars are resistance type sender units. Higher oil pressure typically equates to lower resistance and result is direct reading on the gauge. I would think surely Dodge has followed suit but not 100% on this. Have you checked the sending unit? I think its next to the filter but don't recall specifically.
Was going to ask the symptoms of one being broken I let off throttle on mine and sounds like metal on metal got told lifters or exhaust leak then asked could it be timing chain tensioner won’t make a noise driving just when I let off throttle
I have a Chrysler 300c 5.7 hemi I think I need this replaced as well. My car started fine then when I parked cut it off and tried turning back on wouldn’t start. When I had it in reverse heard clunking noise like timing chain was hitting something not sure what it is. But no messages on my dash system says ok.
Great video! I would mention that the oil pump can in fact be removed without taking out any oil pan bolts (aside from the ones connected to the timing cover). Remove the 4 bolts and with a little bit of effort should be able to rotate the oil pump clockwise just enough to access the oil pump pickup bolt. I think the only things that were not addressed in the video; How did you remove the camshaft bolt? Impact? Also when reinstalling the harmonic balancer/pulley did you just bang it on and use the bolt to snug it back up? Or a installer tool/longer bolt? Thanks again!
Mark M thanks for commenting. I wasn’t as fortunate as you. I wasn’t able to rotate the pump enough to get even close to pulling the pick up bolt. I think it has something to do with the 2500 4 bolt main caps. Yes to impact gun for cam bolt. 3/8” drive Milwaukee. Harmonic balancer went on far enough to use the bolt to draw her down.
Thank you. I find maintaining machines is cheaper than neglecting them. I wish I could find another manual trans gas truck. This truck sold last month for $3500. It had 348,000 miles and still runs perfect for the new owner. I talked to him last week. He can't believe how new it runs and feels. Thanks for your comments!
My truck, 2003 ram hemi, was making a slight random ticking while idleing and one day as I was coming of the freeway it started to rough idle at low RPMs and I had to step on the gas while idleing so it wouldn't die to make it home, and now it won't even start, what could it be? It has 143k
Juan Cabriales remove the valve covers and look for a broken valve spring. Here is a video I did with identical symptoms as you described. ruclips.net/video/ImaXqamd8r0/видео.html
Debbie Mauricio how many miles? I understand Dodge had a series of years whereby the chain tensioners broke and chain breakage causing catastrophic engine failure at low miles. This video is to my high mileage ram as prevention only. No prior warnings whatsoever ever and it never jumped timing. Truck now has around 330,000 miles.
Very impressive video...a job well done. I've heard that the HEMI tensioner is made of plastic & is prone to failure. Was the replacement tensioner all metal? Also I have to ask if you use synthetic oil & how often did you change it? Thanks for your valuable time.
Truck was running fine. No noises what so ever. I chose to replace as preventive maintenance due to extreme high mileage. ticking is typically valve train related. Knocking however could in fact be a rod or busted flywheel where the torque converter bolts up.
Quick question. I'm about to install the harmonic balancer and was wondering what you used to install it. I have a Cal-Van tools harmonic balancer installer kit, however I've heard horror stories about the adapter breaking off inside the the crank. Any input would be appreciated .
+Richard Fink I used the crankshaft bolt using impact gun. For what ever reason my HEMI crank bolt was long enough to fully seat the Harmonic Balancer the whole way down. No harmonic balancer install kit used on this HEMI. My boat SBC 5.7 was a different story and required an install tool.
I like to know. What made you do the work you did on the Hemi? I'm aware the tensor for the timing chain had broken. Where driving when this happened? And what kind of noise there if any? Some thing went on my truck, and just got the same parts you installed and changing the oil pump. I know the oil pump is failing because the oil light is on. And it has enough oil and I can feel the motor having low pressure. Was there noise like ticking, or something in that nature?
It should be noted that the tensioners on the Hemi break and usually trash the cam and heads. The Hemi is an all aluminium interference engine. Your truck engine is likely a clearance motor?
Enjoyed watching and good job as well. My Dodge 07 1500 currently has 234,000 miles on it and I’ve been thinking it’s probably over due. I service very regularly ever since new and never over rev the engine. Curious if permatex of any kind is used or O ring gaskets oil pan & water pump sealing everything? I need to buy a manual obviously. Thanks again for sharing!
Yes, I had a valve spring break. See you tube videos. I replaced the lower control arms. See my other videos. Never uses oil. 7quarts on always on oil dip stick from oil change to oil change. Used various types of oil but mostly non synthetic but faithful changes at 3000 miles.
@ copy the truck I’m working on has crank position and cam position codes. but I’m diving in to the timing chain and replacing it cuz it has 200k and stuck in limp mode. After the customer did a burn out. So I’m gonna go ahead and replace the timing set up lol
Great Video. thanks for taking the time to post it. I am changing the timing gasket and the Crank seal on my 05 HEMI and I have 1 question. What sealant if any do you put at the bottom of the timing cover? Also if you know off the top of your head. What is the torque specs for the timing cover? Thanks again, KP
“Test drive”? You mean “ops check”, sir? Lol. Great video! I’ve worked in the aircraft business too. Now I’m studying at Riddle in Daytona to get my A&P.
No because the timing chain didn't break. The chain was getting ready to break due to the tensioner rubbing into it but it held on. Had the chain broke the engine would have suffered catastrophic failure.
Yes because while the tensioner was busted the chain held on. The tensioner on the Hemi 5.7 is not a tensioner but rather a device to reduce the noise from a sloppy worn out chain hitting the cover.
I doubt at 117000KM your needing any major work such as timing chain. The serpentine belt and water pump can be inspected externally and replaced as needed. Good luck.
Media Junkie . What about a 10 second rattling noise on a cold start of my truck? Is that normal , it also has this ticking noise On the driver side when Im driving and becomes more noticeable when slowing down.
Jacob Rodriguez Nothing will replace being pro active and investigating noises. Worthy concern you have as rattling should not be heard at anytime. Fortunately if your HEMI is in-fact begging for a timing chain inspection then go at it. As you can see the job is not hard. Good luck.
Well done! Say, when did you replace your fuel pump? Ever? How about the alternator? How many miles did you get from the original? My 2011 1500? 142k. The starter went out at about 100k. Thinking the pump or alternator will be next. Oh, and the serpentine tensioner? Good for about 100k too. Best to do that before it leaves a person stranded. Mine let go two blocks from the house, very convenient.
Did the timing chain jump a tooth or 2? How did you know something was wrong with it? I have a 03 ram also and it started running real rough by the time I got home I herd a heavy tap in the motor. ( not a knock) I'm wondering if my timing chain jumped. Just trying to diagnose it my self. Any thoughts?
Nope it did not jump timing. I chose to change out timing set as prevention only due to high mileage. Your problem could be a broken spring or valve seat has dropped. 03s were common for both especially dropped valve seat if it ever overheated. Hopefully your problem is limited to just a broken valve spring as that's easily fixable. Dropped valve seats and broken timing chains are typically catastrophic.
I know this is years later but I had a question for diagnostic purposes. Did you notice a rattling noise when in low rpm range to determine it being the tensioner?
Hopefully you would answer this so long ago how far did u drop oil pan for oil pump pickup tube bolt and did u reuse the oil pan gasket or put new on thanks
@@mediajunkie2195I was also going to ask how you resealed the oil pan without taking it out. Hopefully mine will be in good enough shape to reuse as well. 🤞
Was this engine making and noise when at idle on the driver's side? Kinda like chain clicking/clacking... It goes away when oil pressure goes up with rpm at 1k. It's been normal for this truck for the 3 years I have had it.
actually, i have the P0016 code un my 2011 ram 5.7 The engine run but with reduced performance and Fuel efficiency is not very good, at times a sound similar to the friction of the timing chain, the pressure already at nominal temperature is 16psi and 20mph from 43psi to 44psi ......What do you think it could be?
Pull one of the #1 spark plugs out. Rotate engine until compression. Using long screw driver rotate to highest point. Align the discolored chain links to the dot on cam sprocket. Crankshaft gear will have dot at 6
Thanks for making that video, I have 161k miles on my 06 Dodge Charger, and have been thinking to myself should I change the timing chain, belts, tensioner, & oil pump soon, I really love the reliability of this Hemi, as long as they're maintained who knows how long they'll last, I use only Royal Purple or mobile one for oil changes as well as the transmission and axel, what brand of motor oil do you use? And again thanks for the video
HEMI 5.7's are reliable up to the very point they fail and grenade causing catastrophic damage. Any new parts you throw at her to keep her up and running as preventive will pay for it self all around. Plus by keeping up with the valve train you'll double the life. Then drive it like you stole it. 2006 was a great year for Dodge.
My 5.7 Hemi Police engine loves Royal Purple, it may just be switching from standard to premium is what it likes but its still worth looking into. @Media Junkie I absolutely agree, the 5.7Hemi if maintained is incredibly reliable, the only common issues Ive seen is ticking valve train but thats not particularly dangerous, half the time seafoaming the engine is enough to fix it, sometimes you need to change some parts of the valve train but oh well. As for me personally the only issue my Hemi's had is blowing the seals on the NAG1 5 speed auto's sensor housing but fixing that is nothing difficult by any stretch. I hear the new 8speed auto based off the old bulet proof torqueflite transmissions is incredible
+Harold B Rock Auto invoice was $202 Cloyes Timing Set, Fel-Pro Gasket kit for cover, Gates. Water Pump, Pulley, Tensioner, kit with a new belt. Upper and lower Radiator Hose Thermostat. NAPA was $21 for 2 gallons of Zerek G05 coolant and $35 for 7 quarts of oil and filter Lowest bill was $12 for concrete mixing pan Dollar General $2 for 2 gallons of distilled water. $75 tool rental for harmonic balancer from Autozone (Refunded) Grand total was $237 - Don't wait to change
Pat Seaser - Truck is still on road and running great. 54000 additional miles since this video. My Mother in law drives it. I got lucky with this truck right?
@@mediajunkie2195 That is incredible!! And I don't know if it's luck or extreme preventative maintenance! Thanks for the reply, I sincerely appreciate it. Also great video!
Compressor has to be removed from its mount hardware but system does not require being evacuated. Meaning you can leave the refrigerant in the system. For my situation I had to remove the compressor entirely because stupid me missed a mounting bolt at the rear of the compressor causing it to break off. Hope this helps
I found the part number for the Timing Chain Tensioner bolts if anyone needs it. I torqued my tensioner bolts to 21 ft-lbs but one of them snapped on me. Replacement is Part No: 6509174AA
What's your Hwy Mpg? Rear gear ratio? How can you not be tempted to buy a newer one with the 5 link rear end? It must ride like a Cadillac compare to all other 3/4 ton trucks
I Know You're Right But - I would suggest having a compression test done on all the cylinders these engines are known for poor cooling Chanels and can bent valves due to overheating this situation won’t mix water and oil but it will make it sound like a diesel truck
CAUTION: The timing chain must be installed with the single plated link aligned with the dot and or paint marking on the camshaft sprocket. The crank- shaft sprocket is aligned with the dot and or paint marking on the sprocket between two plated timing chain links.-From 2004 Dodge Ram Factory Service Manual 5.7
Heck, I replaces Ferrari timing/tensioners/pulleys/rollers/thermostat/water pump at 30k.
Glad that yours lasted close to 300k.
Thank you for sharing.
My HEMI has 260k and my timing chain is slowly going. Thanks for the video I love DIY vids

Hey excellent video. I have same cement mixing bucket. That’s a lot of miles. Still going strong. It’s been 4 years you still have it. Have a nice day

nice truck. its good to see she's been good to you. i bought a 2010 hemi and i hope i have the same luck. cheers.
I understand the MDS on the later HEMI"s acts up. Mine had a valve spring break. Otherwise very reliable. Good luck to you.
Wow, I thought I was one of the only people with a 5 speed gasser ram 2500. Looks great. Hope you still have it!
A+ Video. Good instruction and to the point. Probably the best damn F-ing DIY automotive video on youtube. Thanks for posting

What an excellent video. I am still enjoying my 05 Dodge 2500 HEMI. Right there with ya!
Rick Reid - thanks for commenting. Sold truck last month. It had 352,000 miles.
Very nice. Did this on my 460 f350. Now have to do the same on my sons 2002 ram 1500 . Popping out of intake. Chain jumped a tooth or 2
Great job. Excellent mechanical and video work.
Those engines are so solid. It never has to work hard.. Lazy power all day long.
A big thanks. They are good engines but not perfect. Thanks also for taking the time to comment.
This is exactly what I needed. Thank you for making an easy to understand video. Huge help man. Thank you!
Thanks for commenting
Great truck! Thanks for posting, I need to do this on my hemi with 200k. Oh man, manual transmission would be the best!
I had mine done at dodge dealership and just noticed my alternator bolt was loose I took it out with my hand . They should of checked that correct before I left or gave me the car back correct?
Good video! Studying up because evidently my 5.7 should have fallen apart already. 05 Ram Daytona 5.7 150K. Nothing failed yet.
STORMY BRINSON - prevention is key. Thanks for commenting.
Have the same exact truck, same year. Motor blew at the same exact mileage u have rn lol.
Bright White Hemi Great! Guess I’ll start stockpiling parts. 😬
Just drove truck in this video two days ago. 381200 miles on it. My mother in law sold it to her neighbor.

Thanks for the positive reply. Nice of you to say. Truck is at 336,944. I got lucky with this one. I'm typically not a Dodge fan but this one was a good one.
sure thing. It was probably built on a Wednesday. no joke. if it was built on a Friday every nut and bolt would be loose.

Just pulled my cover at 163k miles, 04 ram 5.7 5-45rfe. Tensioner isn't broken, chain is pretty damn tight still
Replacing it anyway
Your video although good isn't very clear about a couple things here:
1) AC compressor has a 3rd bolt in the back, what a weird design. I snapped the 3rd back leg of my compressor thinking it was just stuck after removing the 2 big bolts like the Alternator is setup.
2) The timing procedure. The cam gear has a dot that needs to be at 12oc, the crank gear has a dot that needs to be at 6oc, and the timing chain has 3 links that have identifying marks, they look like squares.

I believe the correct Foot Pounds for the camshaft bolt is 90 foot pounds. Not 30 or 35. Can’t remember what you said
Nice work,
thanks for the Video
Dude you are the man!
+babak1969van - Thanks, I assume the video was a help or are you amazed that someone is changing a timing chain on a vehicle with 300,000 Miles???
+Media Junkie I appreciate cars that have worked and have high miles but they are still rocking! A Ram truck is not a trailer queen, it's a work horse so 300miles is a great deal. Means you have taken a good care of it. I have a 2005 magnum with the 5.7 hemi and 250Km. I am just getting prepared for the day that it needs the same treatment! Good luck with that truck!
+babak1969van Here lately seems I'm uploading Ram how to videos weekly. I guess it won't be long til this one gets crushed.

Well thats life and what can we do! I love my Magnum, it has over 250Km on it and I hate loosing her for any reason but I am getting prepared for it. I hope one day I can afford a Challenger RT.
Amigo desde venezuela te pregunto:
Cambiaste el refigerante., la bomba de agua nueva? Solo cambiaste el tensor roto y los demás componentes también los cambiastes? Que aceite pusiste a? Y saber si ella te soñaba feo?
How did you get your #1 cylinder top dead center and don’t it have to be done before you remove the timing chain and components
very great work like it
I have a question for you I got a Hemi 5.7 2007.
William Meyer . u need to replace the oil pressure sending unit
Was going to ask the symptoms of one being broken I let off throttle on mine and sounds like metal on metal got told lifters or exhaust leak then asked could it be timing chain tensioner won’t make a noise driving just when I let off throttle
No symptoms. Truck had 300,000 miles............... so I just felt it needed checked out. Good choice.
Thanks
You're a baller dude!! Sick like!
Can’t fine any videos for a 2005 magnum rt HEMI
I have a Chrysler 300c 5.7 hemi I think I need this replaced as well. My car started fine then when I parked cut it off and tried turning back on wouldn’t start. When I had it in reverse heard clunking noise like timing chain was hitting something not sure what it is. But no messages on my dash system says ok.
Elegant Elliott sorry to hear. Easy job on 5.7 in truck.
Great video
Thanks helpful for you?
+Media Junkie I have a dodge magnum and this is on my to do list your video plus the service manual and I think Its should be good. Great video though
300,000 miles really good you can tell you Maintain you Vehicle.
Media Junkie nice yea manuals in those trucks are the best
My him blower 3 lifters all to Peace's and can I replace the head and lifters and be alrite
@@mediajunkie2195 I will check it out
how did u know or found out that is was broken?
I didn't. Preventive maintenance told me a vehicle with 300,000 miles needed the timing chain looked at.
Ecelentisimo video
Hey before you changed the timing chain tensioner on your truck by chance did it make a slapping noise? Or any kind of noise?
No noise that I could hear. Only changed because of high mileage
How did you know you're piston #1 was that top dead center... With your heads on?
I have the same truck it cranks when I try to start it was just wondering if that's what happens when the time chain is broken
Lol just cant shake the military feeling i see. Great video
Very impressive video...a job well done. I've heard that the HEMI tensioner is made of plastic & is prone to failure. Was the replacement tensioner all metal? Also I have to ask if you use synthetic oil & how often did you change it? Thanks for your valuable time.
Replacement set from Cloyes was metal and nylon but a better design.
what was truck doing to make u change it was it making a simular knock to a rod knock sound? thanks
Should of replace the oil pump while you were there.
No. Engine was running okay. I chose to replace timing chain and tensioner as prevention type of maintenance only
Have you ever had to replace Lifters /Cam
Not yet on a running hemi motor. I have on full rebuilds but not a hemi
It should be noted that the tensioners on the Hemi break and usually trash the cam and heads. The Hemi is an all aluminium interference engine. Your truck engine is likely a clearance motor?
James Palmer yeap. Henceforth the intention of this video.
Thanks
Enjoyed watching and good job as well. My Dodge 07 1500 currently has 234,000 miles on it and I’ve been thinking it’s probably over due. I service very regularly ever since new and never over rev the engine. Curious if permatex of any kind is used or O ring gaskets oil pan & water pump sealing everything? I need to buy a manual obviously. Thanks again for sharing!
jared Last - 2007 was a good year for Dodge. Quality products during that year. I didn’t use any sealers on pan, cover nor water pump.
Hello! What oil do you use for your 2500 ram mine only has 130 000 kms and it’s noise but the garage only put 5w20 in my truck...
Other then the chain any other problems with the 5.7 Hemi? How much oil dose it burn and what kind did you use?
Thanks! Anthony
Yes, I had a valve spring break. See you tube videos. I replaced the lower control arms. See my other videos. Never uses oil. 7quarts on always on oil dip stick from oil change to oil change. Used various types of oil but mostly non synthetic but faithful changes at 3000 miles.
Did you by chance have a crank sensor code and a cam sensor code to go with this timing chain problem.
No codes. Truck ran fine. Just felt it needed looked at due to high miles
Permatex Ultra Grey Rigid High-Torque RTV Silicone and 21 lbs or 250inch pounds torque for the cover and water pump bolts
how much fuel milage did you gain
Mike Quesenberry no mileage gain that I noticed but didn't check. Thanks
Did you get a engine light with a cam sensor signal fault code with that worn timing gear set?
That's what I'm getting and hard starts.
@@joeysanchez5926 the one I was working on was very low on oil.
Great engine before 07
“Test drive”? You mean “ops check”, sir? Lol. Great video! I’ve worked in the aircraft business too. Now I’m studying at Riddle in Daytona to get my A&P.
Great school. Most Riddlers become high ups in the aviation maintenance industry. Good luck!
is the cam bolt a torque to yield bolt?
Not in dodge OEM manual. Torque say's 90Ft Lbs
When the timing chain tensioner broke it didn't bend any rods?
No because the timing chain didn't break.
The chain was getting ready to break due to the tensioner rubbing into it but it held on.
Had the chain broke the engine would have suffered catastrophic failure.
Would the truck start with that tensioner like that
Yes because while the tensioner was busted the chain held on. The tensioner on the Hemi 5.7 is not a tensioner but rather a device to reduce the noise from a sloppy worn out chain hitting the cover.
Does the tensioner have a pin in it on the left side? I don't recall pulling one out
Trey Cox the Cloyes timing set shown in this video did have a pin for ease of installation. Each set is different and may not. Thanks
I have a 2009 ram laramie 2500 with 117,000 km on it, is it recomendable to change timing chain , water pump and belts already?
I doubt at 117000KM your needing any major work such as timing chain. The serpentine belt and water pump can be inspected externally and replaced as needed. Good luck.
Media Junkie Thank you!
Good luck.
It could be the exhaust manifold gasket. you can check it from under the truck to see if all bolts are in place.
Sir i have to do this on a 2005 dodge magnum 5.7.
Do i have to take the water pump and radiator please let me know
Not sure about the radiator for Magnum. But yes to water pump.
Did you use any gasket sealer between the bottom of the timing cover and oil pan or any gasket sealer on the timing cover gasket to block?
Tyler Felts - I think I used a small amount in corners. To long ago to recall.
Thank you Sir
Your welcome Sir!
I love the video.
I'm at 145K and been doing lots of preventive maintenance.
How long did this take you if I may ask?
Rick DeShane - I started just before lunch and test drove at around 4:00. Thanks for commenting.
My 2008 alternator went south at 153,000. It's only one data point, but gives you an idea.
When that broke did it make a terrible ticking sound
Not that I heard due to loud exhaust but probably was ticking
@@mediajunkie2195 when it let go did u have a shake during acceleration and lost of power
Did you ever replace the valve springs? I read they had weak valve springs, not sure if it's a comon problem.
I have a 5.7 hemi 2004
Yes, I have two videos on this. ruclips.net/video/ImaXqamd8r0/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/ndjJ383vHgo/видео.html
So did you have to prime the oil pump also how did you get the harmonic balancer back on
Did not have to prime the oil pump and used the same bolt that secures the harmonic balancer to draw it home
@mediajunkie what's up with those tags, I see them all over the place where I live?

The "FLY" tag on your front bumper.
@@MechanicalMercenary I'm a pilot. They sell them at airport pilot shops
Any thoughts?
fan boy i think 300,000 miles on a gas engine is pretty good.. GM has its issues too. its always a role of the dice..
BTW the engine now has 349K miles on it.
Not that I remember but know I had dual exhaust so not sure I would have noticed
@@mediajunkie2195 ok thanks man
What sound was the engine making with that broken
Justin Chey Hubb - believe it or not, no noise that I could tell. Only suspected chain was worn out due to 300000 miles
Hopefully you would answer this so long ago how far did u drop oil pan for oil pump pickup tube bolt and did u reuse the oil pan gasket or put new on thanks
Loosened oil pan bolts just enough to get bolt and tube free. I reused gasket which was in great shape.
@@mediajunkie2195I was also going to ask how you resealed the oil pan without taking it out. Hopefully mine will be in good enough shape to reuse as well. 🤞
@@jondoe4667 Its a seal so once you reinstalled the cover and tighten the bolts the rubber seal is good to go. At least mine was
Was this engine making and noise when at idle on the driver's side? Kinda like chain clicking/clacking... It goes away when oil pressure goes up with rpm at 1k. It's been normal for this truck for the 3 years I have had it.
Brad Downey - No noise heard. Only changed due to high mileage. Thanks
Possibly exhaust manifold bolts have snapped? Have the same sound in mine but it isn't worth fixing.
actually, i have the P0016 code un my 2011 ram 5.7 The engine run but with reduced performance and Fuel efficiency is not very good, at times a sound similar to the friction of the timing chain, the pressure already at nominal temperature is 16psi and 20mph from 43psi to 44psi ......What do you think it could be?
ObedGrind
Vvt sensor screens dirty/broken
how do you when its at tdc im new to this thanks!!
What was your total cost in parts, I'm going do mine soon it has a 170000 onit but runs fine just don't want to have it break.
+Harold B
Rock Auto invoice was $202 Cloyes Timing Set, Fel-Pro Gasket kit for cover, Gates. Water Pump, Pulley, Tensioner, kit with a new belt. Upper and lower Radiator Hose Thermostat.
NAPA was $21 for 2 gallons of Zerek G05 coolant and $35 for 7 quarts of oil and filter
Lowest bill was $12 for concrete mixing pan
Dollar General $2 for 2 gallons of distilled water.
$75 tool rental for harmonic balancer from Autozone (Refunded)
Grand total was $237 - Don't wait to change
.If you had to do it over would you have just pulled the motor, and replaced everything, or was the time worth the effort?
Pat Seaser - Truck is still on road and running great. 54000 additional miles since this video. My Mother in law drives it. I got lucky with this truck right?
@@mediajunkie2195 That is incredible!! And I don't know if it's luck or extreme preventative maintenance! Thanks for the reply, I sincerely appreciate it. Also great video!
Did you have to remove the ac compressor
Compressor has to be removed from its mount hardware but system does not require being evacuated. Meaning you can leave the refrigerant in the system. For my situation I had to remove the compressor entirely because stupid me missed a mounting bolt at the rear of the compressor causing it to break off. Hope this helps
Was this issue (broken tensioner), giving you drivability issues? Any backfiring) stumbling? Hesitation? Loss of power in low rpms? Thanks.
j d yes to all your concerns
Anybody know where I can get replacements bolts for the tensioner?
I found the part number for the Timing Chain Tensioner bolts if anyone needs it. I torqued my tensioner bolts to 21 ft-lbs but one of them snapped on me.
Replacement is Part No: 6509174AA
What brand of oil have you been using and what grade? Conventional, high mileage, full synthetic? How often have you done your oil changes?
Cheapest oil changes I could find such as Walmart or local guys. However faithful every day 3-4000 miles since new.
6 years late but it's a single chain on top with the dot and 2 on the bottom with the crank.
That's a negitive, ghost rider.
CAUTION: The timing chain must be installed with
the single plated link aligned with the dot and or
paint marking on the camshaft sprocket. The crank-
shaft sprocket is aligned with the dot and or paint
marking on the sprocket between two plated timing
chain links.-From 2004 Dodge Ram Factory Service Manual 5.7
