Glen was an absolute titan of a musician. He usually hybrid picked this with pick and fingers and capod at the third fret, which is not easy when singing. Looks like he decided to ditch the capo and the pick for this rendition and play crazy bar chords and pure fingerstyle... without missing a beat and while leading an orchestra! An incredibly gifted musician.

What is amazing is ypu heard him more than you realize. When he wasn't perfoming on his own, he was part of the biggest studio backup groups at the time. Any kind of music, country, rock, whatever.

Glen did it first, and the idiot suits at Capital Records didn't promote it. It's not like he made millions of dollars for that label over the years 🙄 Glen left Capital Records after that. Johnny, Willie, Waylon, and Chris heard the song and decided to name their supergroup after it and release that hit single. And the rest is history.

Glen Campbell is one of America's greatest treasures - he is so talented and can do anything on stage. He is humble, loves the fans and is so gracious to all of us.
I have always thought that Glen still doesn't know how great he really is. I have most of his albums - and they have been played many, many times. Sad to see Glen the
way he is right now - but when God calls him Home to Heaven - God will have a
great musician-singer to add to the Heavenly Orchestra. Roger C. a fan since
1961. Glen has always said - he plays at his best when he has a full orchestra backing him :)

There is a more recent version (2001)of him playing this with an orchestra that is very good. The guitar is awesome. Glen was my favorite artist in the early 70’s. Then I went off into hard rocking stuff. It was the 70’s after all. Now I’ve come full circle and I back with Glen. So wish I could have seen him live. We shouldn’t let ourselves get keyholes in a certain kind of music. Ya miss a lot of great stuff.

The easier it appears, the greater the talent. Glen is a genius. And, NO-ONE sings Webb like Campbell.
Highwayman is easily in Glen's 10 greatest songs for me. Desperately melancholy & undeservedly obscure. This version is fabulous. I wonder if this exists on DVD?

Martin, I've said the same thing for years; "The great one's always make it look 'easy'". As a 'hack' guitarist (for 40+ years) I can tell you personally that much of the 'easy' stuff that Glen does with his guitar is incredibly difficult to perform, and to be able to pull it off with such 'ease' in a public setting is even more amazing. Glen's vocal range (and his ability to emote) are also stunning. As one who watched G.C.'s 'Goodtime Hour' as a kid in High School, it is with much sadness and bittersweet pleasure that I listen to many of his performances here on RUclips, knowing that he is in the final chapter of his (earthly) life. "Thanks" beyond words for what you've left us Mr. Campbell......

It's so hard to watch this, this incredibly talented musician in his prime, after watching the documentary of his battle with Alzheimer's. It's not actually his battle, it's his family's battle. I know that because my mom had it. It is pure torture to watch a person decline like that. Those who have it wake up to a new day, new friends, people they recognize but can't name. If anyone is interested, it's currently on Netflix, titled "I'll be me". The lyrics to his final recording "I'm not gonna miss you" are so hard to listen to and for some reason, even harder to read. Hopefully before my own kids are senior citizens, there will be a cure.

I just want to thank you for sharing these clips of Glen and the Boston Pops. Until I watched and listened to these performances of first MacArthur Park and now Highwayman, I don't think I realized how much Webb's music speaks to me, nor how much I appreciate Glen Campbell's talent. I'd forgotten this song until Glen started singing it. Does anyone else find this performance, especially the lyrics, tug at their heart now that we know what Glen has been facing at this stage of his life? And Webb's melodies that are so haunting and maybe the Pops with their orchestration remind me of my early childhood, what was playing in the background on radio in the late '60s and early '70s, how this kind of sound remains a strong echo of what was now long ago. My dad pointed out when I was a kid how much he liked Galveston and Witchita Lineman, and now, watching these PBS clips, I realize Jimmy Webb's tunes and Glen's interpretation combined on these other songs reach deep into the soul, magnified when I actually listen to those lyrics.

Thank you so much for all of the old videos you put up. It's too bad that they aren't so clear after so many years, but I don't care, I've listened to plenty of vinyl when I was a teen, it didn't matter how gray those albums got. I still have them. Even VHS tapes aren't clear compared to dvd's. Imagine some day in the future when they can clean up the old videos and have more generations appreciate the epic music we had, those of us who did our growing up from the late 60's into the 90's. After that, it's hard to find a lot of music that truly qualifies as music.

    • @NorwoodGlen
      @NorwoodGlen  6 лет назад

Survivrs, thanks for your nice comment.
a good deal of footage taped on VHS in the early days was taped off local channels, many people didn't have cable and the reception was over antennas, this puts you at a handicap to begin with as you are at the mercy of reception issues when taped. Add that with the less the perfect technology of VHS with tracking issues, loss of quality over the years etc. and your left with what you see 30-40 years later.
Many shows, like this one, have never been re-released, and there's no word they ever will be to see a really high def version with great sound clarity.

Friends of Glen, yes I was sure someone had the right equipment to record these videos from the 70's or before. I remember using a tape recorder just to record a tv show-just the audio. I appreciate ALL of the videos you have put up here. I don't care about the quality, it is just so nice that we have what we do. I grew up with an antenna, rabbit ears with aluminum foil, moving the rabbit ears for better reception of black and white shows on 3 channels. It was in the 70's before we had a color tv, still had the antenna, etc. Anyway, thank you!!

No, it works much better with just Glen and his guitar. And he's a brilliant guitarist.
This beautiful song drowns with a big orchestra.

@NorwoodGlen Actually, I think Carl replaced Larry while the goodtime hour was still on...during it's last year...I remember seeing him on TV with Glen..so can't completely be sure....But you're right, he stayed with him... I also knew Carl for a while after the show had ended. Met him at the old Palomino Club in North Hollywood (now gone).
Went by his apartment one night and played his ovation... He looked like he did in that special, then...

@sbbinahee Players will often used a capo just to get closer to the sound they actually want. As an example, say they are playing in E, they may want to use the capo and actually play in C or D so they can get more drones and open ringing. It's not always just to make it easier to play. Guys that good can think about things like that; guys like me just think about trying to play it. lol

Glen tried to release this as a single but the suits at his label said it wouldn't be a hit...so the "Highwaymen" did it.

Yeah. Those idiots should have been shitcanned. It's not like Glen made millions of dollars for Capital over the many years he was with them 🙄
