Sometimes you can do an insane amount of research and still make a really dumb mistake. I used photos of the WRONG ANDY SWANSON in this video so they are now blurred out. Apologies to all Andys involved.
Really interesting and well made video. I love videos about fairly obscure consoles/peripherals but this video had just that something extra. I think it's because Paul Wessel sounds like a pretty great guy with a noble dream he went to great lengths to accomplish - you don't usually hear any kind of deep personal story behind videogame hardware!
The last company I expected to see brought up was Head Games Publishing, haha. What a strange company they were. Nice work, this is something I'd never heard of even once!
I actually used to work for Sensory Sweep Studios, during the development of Glucoboy. I remember seeing the dev kits for it and the hardware that they were in the process of developing. Then it was a very sad ending to the company. The demise was pretty much done by the owner of the company, Dave Rushton. But a lot of that can be contributed to the Stock Market crash back in 2008. The Stock crash caused one of Sensory Sweep Studios largest publishers, Brash Entertainment, to pull the plug on the development of The Tale of Despereaux. They had a mostly completed development of the game at the time but didn't pay anything to Sensory Sweet Studios. They ended up selling the game to Sony Entertainment which they ended up releasing the game that way and sent no money whatsoever to Sensory Sweep. Plus the game was really never completed and was getting poor reviews at the time. www.ign.com/articles/2008/12/23/the-tale-of-despereaux-review As far as Glucoboy went, I think I was pretty much gone from the company by then so I never saw what happened to development of it from there. Even though the ending was bad for the company, it was a great place to work and met TONS of great people there.
As someone with Type 1 Diabetes from an early age I wish this had been around when I was a kid. Thanks for researching and making this video Kelsey. Also, major props to Paul Wessel for looking at things from an incentive led approach to try and genuinely improve the lives of folks like his son. It's like the non-exploitative older cousin of loot boxes ;)
As a Type 1 Diabetic who tried to get in touch with you about information about the Digget, I have to say thank you for this video Kelsey!!! And congratulations on your engagement
Gorilla Press she's a natural. Absolutely could see her doing reporting and editorials one of these days. That said, I think her passion for the subject matter is what makes it work best. She's very talented and obviously quite driven. Kudos!
Great vid Kelsey, it's awesome that you could get in touch with important people in this project, and provide never before seen footage. I hope one day the full product can be displayed and the ROM can be played, we need to preserve those things!
Kelsey, I consider myself pretty savvy with Nintendo knowledge but Glucoboy is totally new to me. Thanks for doing the research and producing such a high quality video. 😃
Congrats on another awesome historical video about video gaming, Kelsey. You, MJR, and the whole gang help spread the word, enlighten, and inspire. Your reporting techniques and production quality are at the top of RUclipsrs I watch. Stay awesome and congrats on your recent engagement!
Thanks for making such a great video! I'm a type 1 Diabetic, so the story behind the Glucoboy and Didget is something I've been wanting to learn about for a while now. Most people don't cover it, especially as well as you did. Keep up the great work!!
I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2006 and wanted this! I am an adult and wanted the incentive to play games when I tested my blood! Thank you so much for doing a documentary on this! You are rockin these types of projects!
I'm seeing a bunch of my favourite channels write in the comments, and I totally see why. Great content and presentation. I've never heard of ANY of this, so I can only imagine how much research you had to do. Thanks so much for the video! Subscribed!
I love that these games look so solid! Like they could have farted out some shovelware onto it, but the animation quality and gameplay look pretty good. I really like the way the girls eyes shut when she shoots in Knock Em Downs for example
I'm type 1 diabetic wasn't diagnosed until I was 21 and this is pretty neat. I do want to get captain novolin the game sucks but for some reason I want it maybe I can find it at mo game con. Congratulations on you and Cody's engagement.
I was fully expecting YOU to be the owner of the elusive 2nd Glucoboy. I'm really amazed and impressed you got the devs on board for this video, but considering how passionate Paul and Brad are about this product, it makes sense. Kudos and thanks to all three of you for making this happen, this was fascinating to learn about. One thing I wondered about - was there concern about little kids wanting to rack up Glucopoints too quickly, so they prick their fingers too much? Was there a built-in daily limit for how often you could earn points?
Thank you! There is a built in limit! I believe it was 6 times per day but I'd have to check my notes...it's whatever the maximum recommended amount is.
Hey, I was one of the lead designers on this project from the software side (games and interface with the glucoboy) and making sure that healthy use of the system was a pretty big priority for us. It was a while ago so I don't remember all of the details but I believe it locked the user out from gaining any more points after a certain number of uses in a day. We even thought of not letting them play any more if they tried to abuse the system but we figured that would be mean so we just capped the number of points per day and number of times points could be awarded per day if memory serves.
1) Great video 2) Dang, those games actually looked pretty fun .. and 3) wonder if the GlucoBoy proto I saw at PAX East a few years ago had different games.. that would be pretty neat
As always, a fascinating video! Who knew this stuff even existed? The research effort you put in is quite impressive, and your production is excellent. This is why yours are among the only videos I watch as soon as I can when they're uploaded. Thanks for all the work!
Thanks for the sharing. Being Type 2 kinda wish this was more common because believe me it's not a highlight of my day to check my blood sugar. But turn it into a game and I might actually look forward to it.
Boi where was this when I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 16. This would have been awesome. I would be lit checking my blood sugar. No but seruously I couldn't imagine how rough it would be to be diagnosed as a young child I'm glad i was able to be free of it through my young childhood. Good job Nintendo for being the company to literally do anything.
Weirdly despite mentioning "oddball stuff" a lot less than many other gaming centric channels I've probably only encountered stuff I wasnt aware of through you. Both this and that exercise bike add-on/controller/however_you_want_to_define_it come to mind.
Great research! As always, great interesting content! Your docos are awesome. And above all, Mazal tov for your engagement! May you be happy together 4ever!
The original wasn't released in the US to my knowledge and the largest market it had was Australia.. it never had a large scale release if memory serves. But there was a second, completely different release done for the DS (the original Glucoboy hardware only fit on the GBA if memory serves, the second version hardware was for the DS). The second version had a much larger release and I had already left the dev team at this point but from what I heard, even though it had a slightly larger market, it still was a pretty limited release item and fairly rare.
Sometimes you can do an insane amount of research and still make a really dumb mistake. I used photos of the WRONG ANDY SWANSON in this video so they are now blurred out. Apologies to all Andys involved.
@shaun oriley lmao
Thats fine, kelsey. Btw, congrats for the engagement. Just dont scold him too much for spending thousands of Dollars ,OK.
Don't sweat it Kelsey, by the way congratulations on your being engaged.

@shaun oriley nothing to feel bad about.. she is kind of on the cute side. Nothing better than cute intelligent gamer girls who know their stuff.
The last company I expected to see brought up was Head Games Publishing, haha. What a strange company they were.
Nice work, this is something I'd never heard of even once!
I wonder if softball was any inspiration in the making of Extreme Paintbrawl.
Thank you! Yes, it’s a strange cameo from a strange company

Of course LGR is here 😂👌
Brash was a ticking time bomb of wasted money and inexperienced leadership. They were doomed regardless.
As a Type 1 Diabetic, this video is extremely interesting. I had no idea Nintendo was involved with blood sugar testing. Thanks Kelsey, great video!
Really interesting stuff, NEVER heard of this thing before.
As someone with Type 1 Diabetes from an early age I wish this had been around when I was a kid. Thanks for researching and making this video Kelsey. She's really good at these videos. It's like combining product review, educational, and collection videos all in one.
Gorilla Press she's a natural. Absolutely could see her doing reporting and editorials one of these days. That said, I think her passion for the subject matter is what makes it work best. She's very talented and obviously quite driven. Kudos!

Between this and Captain Novolin on the Snes my diabetic needs really were covered. Thanks Nintendo!
Wait... you mean there is something out there related to video games that John Hancock doesn't own?
