Maybe start with the studio version first, always, to get a feel of the song as conceived, then move on to live versions for the energy and performance.
Live in Europe is the best version out there!(for a live review)! If you want a really raw version to listen to and not for a review I would listen to the Live in Pittsburgh 5/2/70.....that's one of my favs
I love your description of this song because that’s exactly how I feel! Back in the day in South Florida I was in my 20s I’m 53 now and a friend of mine. Her boyfriend was in a blues band so we used to go up to Fort Lauderdale from Miami and watch him play and let me tell you I’ve always been a huge fan of the blues!

Break on Through, there first recording, check that out fantastic, Iam old saw the Doors at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970 along with Jimi Hendrix, The Who etc but what stood out was Jim’s voice, so powerful. Hard to believe in just one more year and they both died, they are irreplaceable
The Boyz were sophisticated...especially compared to the other Rockers of their era, The Doors were the only ones with college degrees: Morrison and Manzarek were from the UCLA grad film school (Florida State for Jim and DePaul for Ray), Robbie attended Menlo College and the University of California, Santa Barbara, while John attended Cal State, Northridge (called Cal State San Fernando Valley in his day). They were true serious artists not garage band wannabes. Jim in his lyrics and vocals, Ray in his decades of schooling in classical and jazz piano, Robbie in old school jazz guitar, and John in Afro-Rhythm jazz. People who call out the Doors as being Morrison with a back-up band have no idea how the band work collaboratively...Morrison wrote many majestic songs but Krieger wrote the pop hits that allowed the Doors to remain relevant.

Break on Through, there first recording, check that out fantastic, Iam old saw the Doors at the Isle of Wight festival in 1970 along with Jimi Hendrix, The Who etc but what stood out was Jim’s voice, so powerful. Hard to believe in just one more year and they both died, they are irreplaceable

The Doors were the only ones with college degrees: Morrison and Manzarek were from the UCLA grad film school (Florida State for Jim and DePaul for Ray), Robbie attended Menlo College and the University of California, Santa Barbara, while John attended Cal State, Northridge (called Cal State San Fernando Valley in his day).
They were true serious artists not garage band wannabes. Jim in his lyrics and vocals, Ray in his decades of schooling in classical and jazz piano, Robbie in old school jazz guitar, and John in Afro-Rhythm jazz.
People who call out the Doors as being Morrison with a back-up band have no idea how the band work collaboratively...Morrison wrote many majestic songs but Krieger wrote the pop hits that allowed the Doors to remain relevant.
Funny story... Alice Cooper said early one morning Jim called him up. He asked Alice "What are you doing right now?" Alice replied "I just woke up and got myself a beer out of the fridge." Jim said "Okay thanks, gotta go" and hung up. Cracked me up. Alice Swears it's true.
