    "IS THIS ROCK OR BLUES?!"
Yes! The line between Rock & Blues is very blurry because Blues is the foundation for the other.

It is my belief that the British youth of the 40's, 50's and early 60's loved and adored America's Black music artists; early blues, jazz, soul etc. Then they formed bands witch fronted the "British Invasion" with Black American artists style as the wide foundation. Hence we have been forever blessed with timeless rock n' roll ! Peace.

Mary Ann here, who just turned 70 on Friday. I still have 2 Doors albums! Okay, so my long haired hippie boyfriend and I went to see them at Cobo Hall in Detroit, where I am from, maybe 1970, 71. We had pretty good seats.however there was a bunch of empty ones in the front rows.( Sometimes people partied too much and didn't make it to the show) we wanted to sneak down to them but there were guards. Then out come the Doors! Jim Morrison looks around and says, in that totally sexy voice of his, " I don't like looking out to empty seats people come up" Well we flew past that guard and sat 5 the row center!!!
Of course it was fantastic! His face at that time was beautiful like a Greek god, chiseled in marble.❤️

The Doors are a Powerhouse Band with Jim Morrison, their over the top lead singer, then you had Ray Manzarek with those magic fingers flying across the Keys, and Robbie Kreiger on the Guitar and John Densmore on the Drums laying down those beats (remember there were no drum machines back then). The Doors put an astonishing blend of Rythm and Blues Based Rock and Roll along with a more Psychodelic vibe with a lot of Jazz Fusion and a range of middle eastern or Indian influenced sounds - it never gets boring. The Doors had a nice range of Albums that sounded different from each other and got into some really controversial topics that helped make the lyrics super interesting. The guys in the band all met each other at film school at UCLA and got along well and rented a house together in LA and started rehearsing every day and writing music - these guys were serious, and within 6 months they had a major radio hit and became a big draw in the live music scene around LA (this rate of success is highly unusual). Some of their most important shows being at the Whisky A Go-Go where the story goes they played such an amazing show that the Record producer who saw them told them I want to record you immediately after the show, which he did to capture all that energy that this band delivered. Jim was also an author and a deep thinker and wrote many Poems and Short Stories - I am sure that helped him create lyrics. He did die very young and is in the 27 Club that has claimed so many artists sadly, but he left a large legacy. Jim Morrison has a famous Gravesite in Paris that is visited by thousands every year to this day. See the movie The Doors with Val Kilmer for a good overall idea of Jim Morrison's Life and the Band the Doors. Favorites Songs of mine are, Come on Baby Light My Fire, Riders on the Storm, LA Woman, The End which really takes you Deep (was the featured song in the Oliver Stone's Movie Apocolypse Now which you should see). You'll never get bored listening to this band. Keep doing these fantastic reviews!

Dude you gotta react to Canned Heat!! They sound alot like the Doors' bluesy stuff and in fact Jim Morrison the lead singer of the Doors used to go get drunk at the Topanga corral roadhouse and watch Canned Heat shows back in the 60's! And this song Roadhouse blues is actually written about the Topanga corral roadhouse! How cool is that?!?! Canned Heat played at Woodstock 69 and the Monterey Pop Festival 2 years earlier in 67! Every one of their albums is loaded with great songs. Especially the first ( The Doors) and the last (LA Woman). The keyboardist ( Ray Manzarek is incredible)and the guitarist (Robbie Kreiger) and the drummer is not to shabby. That being said the Doors are Jim Morrison the singer.. arguably the trippiest rock and roller ever. Died at 27..

Like Fleetwood Mac, you can't go wrong with any Doors song: "LA Woman", "Riders On The Storm", "Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)", "The End", "Light My Fire", "Crystal Ship", "Strange Days", "Break On Through", "Love Her Madly", "People Are Strange", and so on.
    Songs with harmonica in them:
"Orange Blossom Special", Johnny Cash 1965
"Like A Rolling Stone" (1965), "Just Like A Woman" (1966), "Tangled Up In Blue" (1975), Bob Dylan
    "Midnight Rambler", Rolling Stones 1970
"Heart Of Gold", David Crosby 1972
    "Piano Man", Billy Joel 1973
"Long Train Running", Doobie Brothers 1973
    "Thunder Road", Bruce Springsteen 1973,
    "School", Supertramp 1974
"When The Levee Breaks", Led Zeppelin 1982
"I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues", Elton John 1983
"Blue Sky Mine", Midnight Oil 1990
"Suicide Blond", INXS (pronounced 'In Excess') 1990
I also remember songs by Tom Petty, Boz Scaggs, Harry Chapin, Greatful Dead and Bob Segar with harmonica in them.
What these all have in common is that they are all chart busters, and they all have a Blues basis. You say you are from Louisiana, but I am from Chicago, and I can attest to a lot of harmonica in mid-western Rock, especially Blues-Rock, Southern Rock, Folk Rock -- your basic storytelling Rock with a Blues feel.

The Doors were a psychedelic blues-rock band. They recorded a cover of the Willie Dixon/Howlin' Wolf classic "Back Door Man" to start off side two of their 1966 debut album. To get a feel of how they stretched the blues towards the psychedelic, check out "Soul Kitchen" off that same album. I was still in diapers when Morrison died, so no concert stories to relate. But I can tell you The Doors were huge back in the late 60's early 70's. I remember hearing their hits on the radio even as a little kid on what today might be deemed crossover radio but back then was called "AM Pop". The Doors took their name from the title of the book "The Doors of Perception" by Aldous Huxley, published in 1954, about Huxley's psychedelic experiences under the influence of mescaline which he took as part of a psychiatric experiment in 1953. A search tells me that so far you've reacted to this and "Light My Fire". You'll probably want to check out "Riders on the Storm" next, but instead of going the predictable route, maybe instead check out "L.A. Woman", "Love Her Madly", "Love Me Two Times", "Strange Days", "People Are Strange", "Hello, I Love You", "Five to One", "The End", or "Break On Through (To the Other Side)" among others.

James, without the Blues, there is no Rock n Roll. The Blues begot rock n roll, it is the mother and father of the genre. In almost every rock song there is at least some element of the Blues, then elements like country, bluegrass, gospel, jazz, reggae, ska, even opera and classical etc are added. When mixed, Rock n Roll is the bastard child of all these other genres.

Blues chord changes with a rock and roll beat! This is probably the most rocking song the Doors ever recorded. Most of their music is Jim Morrison poetry set to music written by the rest of the group members. This one, however, is just pure kick ass rock! I was too young to have experienced one of their concerts, but many of them have been released on various albums over the years, and they are mind-blowing (there was a LOT of drug use going on at those shows too, both on stage and in the audience). BTW, I used to spend a LOT of time in New Orleans in my old job. One of my favorite cities on the planet! Best food in the world!

What do you mean you never heard that combination together? Rock 'n' Roll comes from the Blues. Muddy Waters wrote a song called, "The Blues Had Baby And They Called It Rock 'n' Roll."
The music that became known as Rock 'n' Roll started out being called Rhythm & Blues - and it was really a hybrid music - it was a mixture of the Blues, Gospel, Boogie-Woogie Jazz, and Country.
You know what, you should listen to the first two Rock 'n' Roll songs ever recorded. The first one is a song by the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Fats Domino. The song is called the "Fat Man" - it was recorded in December of 1949 at J&M studios in New Orleans and was released in January of 1950.
The Second song was written by Ike Turner (yes, the same Ike Turner that was married to and sang with Tina Turner) and performed by Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats. The song was called "Rocket 88" and it was released in 1951.

Rock is built upon the blues. There were a lot of bands who wrote songs that had that type of more bluesy infusion. Stones did that quite a bit, such as Midnight Rambler or Stop Breaking Down. Glad you liked this one.
