God I hope you see this. You really really really must watch the documentary The Doors it explains everything about this song and who they were and tells the story beautifully. Val Kilmer plays Jim Morrison and Meg Ryan plays his girlfriend/wife and they're awesome at it. I also highly recommend the Documentary The History of The Eagles both of these will show you exactly what it was like to be alive and in the music scene in those days. You'll love it! Soft Parade was my first song. Yes I was on a journey. The End came later when i was in college. Somewhat familiar as the venture to find myself intensified.

This song is featured prominently in the movie Apocalypse Now. Great Vietnam war movie. For me I can never separate the two. If I see/hear one I immediately think of the other.
@@procopiusaugustus6231In a way, it was written for the movie. This was the height of the Vietnam War and The Doors were at the forefront of the anti-war movement. But in a way, it is more of a promotion of violence than an denunciation of it.
@@kelvinkloud To me, it meant trying to convince his girl to take the Greyhound to LA with him. She doesn't go, and that is The End for him. The length of the Mekong River is a metaphor for his own legendary snake. Or not. Something is Art if we can see ourselves. Especially when it comes to Poetry. Morrison wrote poems more than he wrote lyrics.
I saw Jim Morrison & the Doors live in concert at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, New York on March 16, 1968. They included this number in their set. Needless to say, my friend's and my young teenaged minds were blown! What a concert! And we had 2nd row center seats, looking right up at the Lizard King, dressed in a skin tight, green snake skin suit! Take me back!

Back in 1968 my mother bought tickets, 3rd row center for $8.00, Live at the Hollywood Bowl. My sisters refused to take me because I was only 9 years old. I am still working on forgiving them. 😊
Polo, my brother. You dove into the deep end of the ocean with your introduction to the DOORS with this track to start with. MORRISON (Vocalist) was a poet, visionary and a master of metaphors. You have to put yourself in the mindset of the times, and what what was happing. (Vietnam, politics, society ect) Also, where the music was coming from on the west coast (L.A. bands like the DOORS, Laural Canyon CSNY, MAMAS AND PAPAS, or the Bay Area GREATFUL DEAD, JEFFEERON AIRPLANE) the vibes were all different. Mind alternating substance were used heavily during this period and influenced the music. Ray Manzarek (keyboards) played all the bass lines with his left hand on a separate keyboard (the DOORS never had a bass player) Robbie Kreiger (guitar) one of the underrated players out there John Densmore (drums) also one the most underrated drummers going PLEASE, continue your journey through, and down, this psychedelic rock rabbit hole you just blindly jumped into. Just like Alice did in Wonderland. PEACE! And enjoy your trip into this genre of music.
good analysis.... LA wasnt san fran. & morrison wasnt sunny hwood, rather dark West, caged in the city of night. A traveled old soul military kid. spoiled yet willing to starve. smart yet preocuppied w/dark alleys. militant yet yearning for the ancient Light. checked out yet horseblinder movtivation... a lot of contradictions swirled around the lead. & he was both overrated & underrated. & if you understand why, then you'll get how iconic and dangerous he was to the industry & himself. fleeting & plenty of misses. yet, always swung not for the fence, but further for the Stars. & he had the goods to actually get there once in a while. this for sure is a lock into the zone. for the ages band & lead when they got it right. the band many loved to hate, but cant deny.
I hope to hell Polo reads every one of these posts. Taken together they constitute a doctoral level musical education. There are very very few young folks taking part in Polo's review, we are all over 50, most over 60, quite a few over 70. I am 75. Our lives collectively and individually were affected by this music. It's no coincidence we are still "weird". Thank God I am still weird in this way. All of you are providing quality feedback to a young man who has not yet realized the magnitude of those musical times. I'm so grateful I found all of you and your familiar voices. Regardless, like most classic rock they were inspired by blues and Motown music. But the acid sent them to another dimension and Jim translated it to us.
I consider the doors a rite of passage for serious music lovers. And you my friend are a serious music lover. Their studio output is great and all….. but their live stuff is EPIC. I personally was obsessed with the Doors for a good chunk of my school years (80’s and early 90’s). They were of perfect storm of talent and timing. When you look at their place in the pantheon of rock music, I think they are criminally underrated from an influence standpoint. Truly one of the absolute greats.
bulls-eye.... they were so important, that musicians (ie., the industry) didnt want to admit it. frankly too, you can be a great musician & still not get what they were attempting here. you had to also understand cinema, stage craft & symbolist poetry to really fully understand it. plus jim's take no prisoner mentality, his not fully embracing peace & love & his legal troubles all diluted their impact. but history & retrospect dont lie..... what is vital to remember is this was in full form as heard here, performed live in FREAKING late summer 1966! think of that, nothing so menacing & broadly deep as this was being done in the industry when you throw in the stage art & cinematic scape score sound. even early syd floyd (impressive), velvets & king crimson could match that double punch density. & the doors predated or match them on the timeline. your in dylan blonde on blonde zone here as far as artistic depth imo.... your right, roger waters, bowie, iggy, alice & patti were all taking clear notes from this.
I can't agree that they were underrated. The Doors are a hugely influential band. Morrison died so young, but the music was played for many years afterwards & is still playing today.

Jim Morrison was not a songwriter, he was a poet! Their music is euphoric. You have to watch some of their live performances. They were one of the first bands to try new sounds such as using a bottle on your finger while playing guitar and using the organ sound on the keyboard. The thing that makes them live in that special place is because the world lost Jim so fast. They hit the scene in the mid 60s and he was gone by 71. It almost feels like he wasn’t even real. It’s so hard to describe how they make me feel!

Yes! Like a Quentin Tarrantino movie, but actually Francis Ford Coppola, "Apocalypse Now". I first heard this song when it first came out as a young teen. It was more than 10 years later when I saw the movie, and I thought, how appropriate. Coppola's wife won the Oscar for best soundtrack for this movie, and this is the main reason why.
I know of no band that has a "more unique" sound. The members were musically eclectic. Keyboardist Ray Manzarek had a background in jazz and possibly classical music; guitarist Robby Krieger in classical music and flamenco guitar; drummer John Densmore in jazz, classical music, and other genres from around the world; and singer Jim Morrison was a mad poet.
When he was a child and was on vacation with his parents, I think in Mexico, they came across a bus full of people that had rolled over. Jim would tell the story because he believed that the souls of the dead entered him. One of his lyrics says "Ghost crowd the child's fragile eggshell mind"! Without him this band would never exist.

I've been hooked on the Doors since their first album came out. Thanks to my older brother (RIP) for turning me on to them! Light My Fire, The End, When The Music's Over, Riders on the Storm, L.A. Woman. Those will addict you!
The lyrics that got your attention were "Father, I want to kill you. Mother, I want to [screaming]." Substitute the screaming with the words "f**k you" and you'll understand that he's singing about an Oedipus complex. The longer, second musical crescendo that follows seems to me to represent an orgasm. Starting at 13:00, the singer Morrison was barking "f**k" and "f**k me, baby." They engineered the sound so that they could get away with it on an album in the 1960s. I know of no good live performance by the band, but the one by actors in the film "The Doors" is extraordinary. Val Kilmer should have received at least an Academy Award nomination for playing Jim Morrison. Apparently, Morrison wrote the initial version of this song about his breakup with an old girlfriend. He said that what it became could be interpreted to be about the loss of childhood innocence or death or anything else people wanted.
More than 30 years ago when I was in college, my classmates had group study sessions. One night it was my turn to choose the music; I chose "The Doors" Greatest Hits. In the middle of this song playing at a low volume in the background, someone asked "WTF are we listening to?" I've always been a "square," except for some of my music tastes, so that was a proud moment.

In 2008 or 2009, I visited the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. They had a temporary exhibit honoring The Doors. There were fans from ages 10-12 up to in their 70s.
w/ works like this, its understandable. this song will still be listened to closely 50, even 100 years from now.... the structure of the poetic song lyrics draw out & scale up to cylical eternal themes, conflicts & perhaps even precipce of the West. thats how deep morrison goes here. its on one level just a break up song. yet he scales it up to an examination of the exsistential condition, span & possible survival of western culture. epic dystopian theme mixed w/ raw pulse & even back down to just singular eye to eye truth w/ a lover. amazing acheivement.
I heard nothing you said after the song started. But I thought i'd let you know this little known symbology in the song. The color of government vehicles changed in the mid to late 1970's prior to that all vehicles were light blue colored. The blue buses would pull into neighborhoods and pick up the 18 yr olds that were drafted and then sent off to Vietnam.

Before my dad joined Steppenwolf he was interviewed by Jim and Ray for a possible bass player position in the Doors at the Roxy until Jim got into an argument with his girlfriend in the middle of it and they just split. That was that - I think dad would have been miserable in that band being as structured as he is. #borntobemild

I see a call and response between a visionary poet and a responsive band. It's extended beat poetry. Their sound illustrates the story. They don't know what they're going to play next, and this is a snapshot of what he may say one night. His visions come from their music, then they collaborate and elaborate. In the first half. The Blue Bus was sent around by the US Military to collect Draftees back in the 60's. Seeing the Blue Bus driving by brought fear into your soul, as you knew most folks on the bus were going to Nam.
This song played at the very beginning of Apocalypse Now (a phenomenal film, and a must see!), and is my favorite song by the Doors (of many greats!) Edit: My recommendation - Riders on the Storm is amazing, another absolute masterpiece.
Morrison was the epitome of cool. Just oozed sex appeal and the phrase "women wanted to be with him, men wanted to be him" could have been coined only for him.

I visited his grave site in Paris France back in 1995. There were all these young people there just hanging out listening to his music. Really different.
I love this RUclips host. He has brilliant instincts and responds beautifully to all aspects of this complex, dark ballad. Jim MORRISON’s voice was in such fine condition here (Jim wrote the song). And the other three Doors gave spectacular performances, too: Densmore on percussion, Krieger on his gorgeous guitar, Manzarek a genius on keyboard. What an iconic band, from their first single onwards they seemed special,.Managed to visit Jim's grave in Paris a few years back a good four mile walk through the city from our hotel to the cemetery..it was a must do thing while on holiday and so glad i could tick that box. So many truly gifted individuals live life on the edge and Jim was certainly one.

You mentioned that Jim Morrison has a nice voice. He has one of the best voices and some of the greatest charisma of any rock vocalist ever. Everything I learned about being a rock ‘n’ roll front man I learned from Jim Morrison.. When I was a teenager, I would study his live performances; I would scrutinise his expressions, the way he would prowl around on stage like a caged beast - and then the times when he would let go completely, unleash the beast. When I was not playing with a band, I would practice by performing Doors tunes at karaoke bars in my full stage gear😅: leather jeans, motorcycle boots, embroidered linen shirt - just to keep my skills honed. If I didn’t go home with a chick that night, that was a sign I was getting rusty, and I needed to PRACTICE MUCH HARDER 😂. that was a good 20 years ago; I can’t radiate, the same kind of energy these days, at 41.
If you want a relaxed evening, than listen to the album: An American Prayer. Released after Jim's death it was surely something Jim would have loved to hear. Many off his recorded poems (never used in Doors songs compleet) have been put together and the 3 remaining Doors created music to it. Release date 1978
I first heard this song when it first came out back in 1967! I was only 5 years old but when I first heard it as my Mother played the crap out of this album to the point where I knew what song was coming up next. Was Very haunting yet enchanting to me. This did come from their debut album. After listening to this, watch the movie "Apocalypse Now"! They play part of this song which during the scene while this song was playing sent chills throughout my body! Their biggest hit off this album was "Light My Fire" but I as a child preferred this song as the Absolute Favorite on this album, followed by (in order) " I Looked at You", "Break On Through (to the other side), and "The Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)! You'll see the differences in mood between these songs!! Jim Morrison Way ahead of his time yet he was a Poet in his writing. Unfortunately he passed in 1971, part of the "27 club"! There are certainly suggestions that Morrison is talking of the end we all must face, and escaping the inevitably of it whenever possible, but there is also a hint that the singer is telling his audience to live their lives as freely as possible in the meantime. One such instance comes from the Oedipal notions in the lyrics: “Father? Yes son/ I want to kill you/ Mother, I want to…” One can imagine how Morrison would sing the lyric live and it was doing so, back in 1966, that saw him and the rest of the group banned from performing at the Whisky-A-Go-Go. The track was usually reserved for the final moments of the show but, on one occasion, after Morrison had been out drinking and arrived late, the singer decided to perform the closer in the middle of the band’s second set. He delivered the track with the expletives and, once the gig had finished, was quickly booted out of the venue and never invited back. In the recording too, Morrison was asked to restrain himself when singing the lines. In fact, only in 1999 did engineer Bruce Botnik put the “f**k” back into the track. It’s concoction that gives the track an extra powerful punch, amid an already stringent conception.
Botnick probably restored the expletives on the remaster because people had already heard them on the version featured in APOCALYPSE NOW, and because, what the hell.
Was the first doors song I ever heard, I was stoned out of my mind with strobing led lights on my walls, it was one hell of an experience let me tell you
I was a big fan of Jim Morrison and the doors when I was in college in the late 80s. I had cassettes, door size posters, biographies, books of his poetry. Deep into it. What I find funny is that, at that time, their music, or anything from that era, was only twenty years prior but seemed so long ago because it was our entire life ago. Today, it would be like things from the early 2000s, which feels like yesterday.
good eye and ear. its joseph campbell meets blake. it traces western culture from ancient carthage to media empire LA, all in one swoop. w/ a vision and fork in the road where this blue bus may end up in our present day, 2 scores later. morrison like epic scale stuff & had the mind & cinematic feel to make it come alive.
To understand that mother/father part you have to understand about Jim. His father was an admiral in the U.S. Navy -he literally had a ship named after him, and was also the inspiration for Otto the freaky Bus Driver in the Simpson’s estranged father “The Admiral”. Jim was estranged from his entire family from a very young age. Venice California became his family, his home, his safe place, his freak fest (see the cover of Strange Days). But when Jim was a little boy he was on a car trip with his parents across the desert and they came across a car accident with “indians scattered on dawn’s highway bleeding”, dying. He looked in to the eyes of a dying Indian and believed that the soul of that Indian jumped in to his body that moment when the Indian died. He conducted the rest of his life based on that belief. And often went back to the desert to trip and connect with his Indian soul. Jim was a poet and released an album of his poems set to music, called “American Prayer”. That was his last release and “Ghost Song” is a must-listen. But Jim’s poetry is definitely a teen-angst kind of poetry and the Doors are awesome but the songs are kind of a high school frame-of-mind thing.
This certainly is a vibe, as we elderly have known for a long time and I imagine a whole lot of oven got cleaned to The Doors. Yes, Jim has a "good" voice!

I believe this Song got the doors kick out the door of the Whiskey A Go Go in LA on the "mother part" as it was un self censured. This is a good chill song, In college I'd listen to this when studying Calculus over and over again back in the late 70's.
I was at their 1969 performance in Toronto, at Varsity Stadium, and Morrison was ferocious, brilliant. The Doors played last at this celebration by many artists and bands, and when Morrison had sung his final song, I doubt anyone in the audience could sleep for a week. He takes you on his journey and there’s no looking back.
Jim's father was a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam war. Guess they were polar opposites, embarrassed his father in the upper echelon circles I imagine
This song was always something different - the exotic scales used, Jim's haunting voice, tribe-like rhythm, everything is just psychedelic. I imagine this being the choice for many hippies and others while getting high back in the day. Not my choice when I listen to the Doors but definitely something extraordinary.
good description... but I think, though it had elements of psychedelia it was something more elemental. you touched on it: tribal.... its cinematic, wide scape sound. the reviewer picked up that taratino could use this. hes right, its dense in mood & space. in turn more dense then psychedlia... considering he draws the themes back to rome across western civl history to modern LA, it has an epic tribe vibe to it. on the precipice of where the west could be in a new so far distant. in a troubling rebirth. danger & desperation. thats what jim was partly envisioning here. its an amazing work & their film backgrounds really paid dividends here.
I honestly can't imagine being as far out of reality as Jim was and still singing this. I've listened to this for 30 years and I am still memorized by it. I think they were on the other side transmitting this to us.

You have to watch Apocalypse Now. This song is featured in the final scene with Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando. Once you've seen the movie, you'll always think of that scene when you hear this song.
One of my all time favorite doors songs. It started out as a simple song about Jim breaking up with a girlfriend at the time. It turned into a wild ride afterwards. It just got longer and longer and stranger. Jim would improvise a lot when they played live. He’d go off into poems, thoughts.
It's a mood and a groove that is uniquely theirs. When I hear this, or any song off of the first album I think about Los Angeles in the mid to late sixties, Jim and Ray walking Venice Beach, and all of this grit and emotion bubbling up between them. This band is a thing unto itself. A deep dive for an intro into The Doors.

I saw Jim Morrison & the Doors live in concert at the Eastman Theater in Rochester, New York on March 16, 1968. They included this number in their set. Needless to say, my friend's and my young teenaged minds were blown! What a concert! And we had 2nd row center seats, looking right up at the Lizard King, dressed in a skin tight, green snake skin suit! Take me back!

Polo, my brother. You dove into the deep end of the ocean with your introduction to the DOORS with this track to start with. MORRISON (Vocalist) was a poet, visionary and a master of metaphors. You have to put yourself in the mindset of the times, and what what was happing. (Vietnam, politics, society ect) Also, where the music was coming from on the west coast (L.A. bands like the DOORS, Laural Canyon CSNY, MAMAS AND PAPAS, or the Bay Area GREATFUL DEAD, JEFFEERON AIRPLANE) the vibes were all different.
Mind alternating substance were used heavily during this period and influenced the music.

good analysis.... LA wasnt san fran. & morrison wasnt sunny hwood, rather dark West, caged in the city of night. A traveled old soul military kid. spoiled yet willing to starve. smart yet preocuppied w/dark alleys. militant yet yearning for the ancient Light. checked out yet horseblinder movtivation... a lot of contradictions swirled around the lead. & he was both overrated & underrated. & if you understand why, then you'll get how iconic and dangerous he was to the industry & himself. fleeting & plenty of misses. yet, always swung not for the fence, but further for the Stars. & he had the goods to actually get there once in a while. this for sure is a lock into the zone. for the ages band & lead when they got it right. the band many loved to hate, but cant deny.
I hope to hell Polo reads every one of these posts. Taken together they constitute a doctoral level musical education. There are very very few young folks taking part in Polo's review, we are all over 50, most over 60, quite a few over 70. I am 75. Our lives collectively and individually were affected by this music. It's no coincidence we are still "weird". Thank God I am still weird in this way. Regardless, like most classic rock they were inspired by blues and Motown music. But the acid sent them to another dimension and Jim translated it to us.

I consider the doors a rite of passage for serious music lovers. And you my friend are a serious music lover. Their studio output is great and all….. but their live stuff is EPIC. I personally was obsessed with the Doors for a good chunk of my school years (80’s and early 90’s). They were of perfect storm of talent and timing. When you look at their place in the pantheon of rock music, I think they are criminally underrated from an influence standpoint. Truly one of the absolute greats.
bulls-eye.... they were so important, that musicians (ie., the industry) didnt want to admit it. frankly too, you can be a great musician & still not get what they were attempting here. you had to also understand cinema, stage craft & symbolist poetry to really fully understand it. plus jim's take no prisoner mentality, his not fully embracing peace & love & his legal troubles all diluted their impact. but history & retrospect dont lie..... what is vital to remember is this was in full form as heard here, performed live in FREAKING late summer 1966! think of that, nothing so menacing & broadly deep as this was being done in the industry when you throw in the stage art & cinematic scape score sound. even early syd floyd (impressive), velvets & king crimson could match that double punch density. & the doors predated or match them on the timeline. your in dylan blonde on blonde zone here as far as artistic depth imo.... your right, roger waters, bowie, iggy, alice & patti were all taking clear notes from this.

I can't agree that they were underrated. The Doors are a hugely influential band. Morrison died so young, but the music was played for many years afterwards & is still playing today.

Jim Morrison was not a songwriter, he was a poet! Their music is euphoric. You have to watch some of their live performances. They were one of the first bands to try new sounds such as using a bottle on your finger while playing guitar and using the organ sound on the keyboard. The thing that makes them live in that special place is because the world lost Jim so fast. They hit the scene in the mid 60s and he was gone by 71. It almost feels like he wasn’t even real. It’s so hard to describe how they make me feel!

Yes! Like a Quentin Tarrantino movie, but actually Francis Ford Coppola, "Apocalypse Now". I first heard this song when it first came out as a young teen. It was more than 10 years later when I saw the movie, and I thought, how appropriate. Coppola's wife won the Oscar for best soundtrack for this movie, and this is the main reason why.
I know of no band that has a "more unique" sound. The members were musically eclectic. Keyboardist Ray Manzarek had a background in jazz and possibly classical music; guitarist Robby Krieger in classical music and flamenco guitar; drummer John Densmore in jazz, classical music, and other genres from around the world; and singer Jim Morrison was a mad poet.

When he was a child and was on vacation with his parents, I think in Mexico, they came across a bus full of people that had rolled over. Jim would tell the story because he believed that the souls of the dead entered him. One of his lyrics says "Ghost crowd the child's fragile eggshell mind"! Without him this band would never exist.

I've been hooked on the Doors since their first album came out. Thanks to my older brother (RIP) for turning me on to them! Light My Fire, The End, When The Music's Over, Riders on the Storm, L.A. Woman. Those will addict you!
The lyrics that got your attention were "Father, I want to kill you. Mother, I want to [screaming]." Substitute the screaming with the words "f**k you" and you'll understand that he's singing about an Oedipus complex. The longer, second musical crescendo that follows seems to me to represent an orgasm. Starting at 13:00, the singer Morrison was barking "f**k" and "f**k me, baby." They engineered the sound so that they could get away with it on an album in the 1960s.
I know of no good live performance by the band, but the one by actors in the film "The Doors" is extraordinary. Val Kilmer should have received at least an Academy Award nomination for playing Jim Morrison.
Apparently, Morrison wrote the initial version of this song about his breakup with an old girlfriend. He said that what it became could be interpreted to be about the loss of childhood innocence or death or anything else people wanted.
She never attended his concerts ever again.

More than 30 years ago when I was in college, my classmates had group study sessions. One night it was my turn to choose the music; I chose "The Doors" Greatest Hits. In the middle of this song playing at a low volume in the background, someone asked "WTF are we listening to?" The Doors have fans from every generation up to today, they are literally timeless.
In 2008 or 2009, I visited the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. They had a temporary exhibit honoring The Doors. There were fans from ages 10-12 up to in their 70s.
w/ works like this, its understandable. this song will still be listened to closely 50, even 100 years from now.... the structure of the poetic song lyrics draw out & scale up to cylical eternal themes, conflicts & perhaps even precipce of the West. thats how deep morrison goes here. its on one level just a break up song. yet he scales it up to an examination of the exsistential condition, span & possible survival of western culture. epic dystopian theme mixed w/ raw pulse & even back down to just singular eye to eye truth w/ a lover. amazing acheivement.

i'd let you know this little known symbology in the song. The color of government vehicles changed in the mid to late 1970's prior to that all vehicles were light blue colored. The blue buses would pull into neighborhoods and pick up the 18 yr olds that were drafted and then sent off to Vietnam.
The buses in Santa Monica at that time were two-tone blue.

Before my dad joined Steppenwolf he was interviewed by Jim and Ray for a possible bass player position in the Doors at the Roxy until Jim got into an argument with his girlfriend in the middle of it and they just split. That was that - I think dad would have been miserable in that band being as structured as he is. #borntobemild

The Blue Bus was sent around by the US Military to collect Draftees back in the 60's. Seeing the Blue Bus driving by brought fear into your soul, as you knew most folks on the bus were going to Nam.
This song played at the very beginning of Apocalypse Now (a phenomenal film, and a must see!), and is my favorite song by the Doors (of many greats!)

What an iconic band, from their first single onwards they seemed special,.Managed to visit Jim's grave in Paris a few years back a good four mile walk through the city from our hotel to the cemetery..it was a must do thing while on holiday and so glad i could tick that box. So many truly gifted individuals live life on the edge and Jim was certainly one.

You mentioned that Jim Morrison has a nice voice. He has one of the best voices and some of the greatest charisma of any rock vocalist ever. Everything I learned about being a rock ‘n’ roll front man I learned from Jim Morrison.. When I was a teenager, I would study his live performances; I would scrutinise his expressions, the way he would prowl around on stage like a caged beast - and then the times when he would let go completely, unleash the beast. When I was not playing with a band, I would practice by performing Doors tunes at karaoke bars in my full stage gear😅: leather jeans, motorcycle boots, embroidered linen shirt - just to keep my skills honed. If I didn’t go home with a chick that night, that was a sign I was getting rusty, and I needed to PRACTICE MUCH HARDER 😂. that was a good 20 years ago; I can’t radiate, the same kind of energy these days, at 41.

Released after Jim's death it was surely something Jim would have loved to hear. Many off his recorded poems (never used in Doors songs compleet) have been put together and the 3 remaining Doors created music to it. Release date 1978

I was only 5 years old but when I first heard it as my Mother played the crap out of this album to the point where I knew what song was coming up next. Was Very haunting yet enchanting to me. The Doors Break on through
There are certainly suggestions that Morrison is talking of the end we all must face, and escaping the inevitably of it whenever possible, but there is also a hint that the singer is telling his audience to live their lives as freely as possible in the meantime. One such instance comes from the Oedipal notions in the lyrics: “Father? Yes son/ I want to kill you/ Mother, I want to…”
One can imagine how Morrison would sing the lyric live and it was doing so, back in 1966, that saw him and the rest of the group banned from performing at the Whisky-A-Go-Go. The track was usually reserved for the final moments of the show but, on one occasion, after Morrison had been out drinking and arrived late, the singer decided to perform the closer in the middle of the band’s second set. He delivered the track with the expletives and, once the gig had finished, was quickly booted out of the venue and never invited back.
In the recording too, Morrison was asked to restrain himself when singing the lines. In fact, only in 1999 did engineer Bruce Botnik put the “f**k” back into the track. It’s concoction that gives the track an extra powerful punch, amid an already stringent conception.
Botnick probably restored the expletives on the remaster because people had already heard them on the version featured in APOCALYPSE NOW, and because, what the hell.

I was a big fan of Jim Morrison and the doors when I was in college in the late 80s. I had cassettes, door size posters, biographies, books of his poetry. Deep into it. What I find funny is that, at that time, their music, or anything from that era, was only twenty years prior but seemed so long ago because it was our entire life ago. Today, it would be like things from the early 2000s, which feels like yesterday.
Lot of Indian shamanistic and Roman mythological imagery in Morrison's lyrics. He was into the physiology of myth and legend and what it can teach us.
good eye and ear. its joseph campbell meets blake. it traces western culture from ancient carthage to media empire LA, all in one swoop. w/ a vision and fork in the road where this blue bus may end up in our present day, 2 scores later. morrison like epic scale stuff & had the mind & cinematic feel to make it come alive.
To understand that mother/father part you have to understand about Jim. His father was an admiral in the U.S. Navy -he literally had a ship named after him, and was also the inspiration for Otto the freaky Bus Driver in the Simpson’s estranged father “The Admiral”. Jim was estranged from his entire family from a very young age. Venice California became his family, his home, his safe place, his freak fest (see the cover of Strange Days). But when Jim was a little boy he was on a car trip with his parents across the desert and they came across a car accident with “indians scattered on dawn’s highway bleeding”, dying. He looked in to the eyes of a dying Indian and believed that the soul of that Indian jumped in to his body that moment when the Indian died. He conducted the rest of his life based on that belief. And often went back to the desert to trip and connect with his Indian soul. Jim was a poet and released an album of his poems set to music, called “American Prayer”. That was his last release and “Ghost Song” is a must-listen. But Jim’s poetry is definitely a teen-angst kind of poetry and the Doors are awesome but the songs are kind of a high school frame-of-mind thing.
This certainly is a vibe, as we elderly have known for a long time and I imagine a whole lot of oven got cleaned to The Doors. Yes, Jim has a "good" voice!

I believe this Song got the doors kick out the door of the Whiskey A Go Go in LA on the "mother part" as it was un self censured. This is a good chill song, In college I'd listen to this when studying Calculus over and over again back in the late 70's.
Please watch the 1967 toronto concert of this song. It's the best performance of the Doors ever, the audience was completely mesmerized!
I was at their 1969 performance in Toronto, at Varsity Stadium, and Morrison was ferocious, brilliant. The Doors played last at this celebration by many artists and bands, and when Morrison had sung his final song, I doubt anyone in the audience could sleep for a week. He takes you on his journey and there’s no looking back.
Jim's father was a Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam war. Guess they were polar opposites, embarrassed his father in the upper echelon circles I imagine

One of the greatest bits of movie directing was interweaving this song with psychosis, in Apocalypse Now. Breathtaking.

This song was always something different - the exotic scales used, Jim's haunting voice, tribe-like rhythm, everything is just psychedelic. I imagine this being the choice for many hippies and others while getting high back in the day. Not my choice when I listen to the Doors but definitely something extraordinary.
good description... but I think, though it had elements of psychedelia it was something more elemental. you touched on it: tribal.... its cinematic, wide scape sound. the reviewer picked up that taratino could use this. hes right, its dense in mood & space. in turn more dense then psychedlia... considering he draws the themes back to rome across western civl history to modern LA, it has an epic tribe vibe to it. on the precipice of where the west could be in a new so far distant. in a troubling rebirth. danger & desperation. thats what jim was partly envisioning here. its an amazing work & their film backgrounds really paid dividends here.
This song is a trip in every sense of the word. It blew our minds in the 70s and still has the same affect

I honestly can't imagine being as far out of reality as Jim was and still singing this. I've listened to this for 30 years and I am still memorized by it. I think they were on the other side transmitting this to us.
They were only together for 8 years active as a band but they put out some amazing amount of music in that short span.He was a poet who turned his poems into songs 💯

You have one of my favorite reactions to this song. I went through an Apocalypse Now phase when I was like 22 and watched it nonstop. This song is such an amazing interpretation of the Vietnam war and how it impacted the people involved. Thank you for reacting to it.

One of my all time favorite doors songs. It started out as a simple song about Jim breaking up with a girlfriend at the time. It turned into a wild ride afterwards. It just got longer and longer and stranger. Jim would improvise a lot when they played live. He’d go off into poems, thoughts.

It's a mood and a groove that is uniquely theirs. When I hear this, or any song off of the first album I think about Los Angeles in the mid to late sixties, Jim and Ray walking Venice Beach, and all of this grit and emotion bubbling up between them. This band is a thing unto itself. A deep dive for an intro into The Doors.
