Eve, Glad you found the video informative. Caution needs to be taken before making changes to our most basic foods, but I think the best decision was made. Rose

Rose - very well done. you’re videos are incredible! love how you are able to synthesize important information about each vitamin (you’re other videos are incredible too!). Just have one question. people how have bariatric surgery, esp. if the surgery removes part of their stomach, would they also stop producing IF? If yes, would they need IV b12 or a supplement of b12 combined with IF?

Gaby, Glad you find my videos helpful. You have asked a good question. Gastric surgery definitely impacts B12 absorption, but the bigger problem appears to be a drop in gastric acid production, not a lack of IF. Low stomach acid impairs the release of the protein bound B12 in most foods. Supplements provide B12 in a crystalline or free form, so they do not require acid to release them. Recommended levels of supplemental B12 can be quite high for individuals with part of their stomachs removed or bypass surgeries to treat obesity. The B12 RDA for adult men and women is 2.4 micrograms/day. Patients who have had Roux-enY gastric bypass are recommended to take a minimum of 300 mcg and possibly as much as 600 to 1000 mcg/day. A small number may need monthly or quarterly injections, but most can prevent B12 deficiency with high dosed, oral supplements.

Good information but You did not spend even last half minute on solution. What to do when you have high folic acid and low b12?

      Amberlee,
Normal range for B12 is between 200 and 900 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL).
Normal range for blood plasm levels of folate is 2 to 10 ng/mL.
Looks like you have normal levels.
