Spa-like Effervescence for a Spring Fling
I’ve been a fan of ARQUISTE for years, particularly The Architects Club, which I’ve worn too many years to count. The house has the uncanny ability to bring memories to life in ways that many of us can’t even express. The After Sun Eau de Toilette is no exception. You’ll read the fragrance notes and imagine how it might smell, but once you spray it on your skin, the vibe moves off the paper and into the ether of years past.
The initial spritz has a spa-like effervescence that seems to hover above the skin like vapor instead of clinging to the body. There’s a bit of fruit initially as well as a very adult note at the center (the brand refers to it as “tonic and minibar gin”) that prevents it from smelling synthetic or like cucumber water. The poolside notes reminiscent of the original Vacation fragrance linger at the base but are less pronounced than in After Sun’s precursor.
For me, this doesn’t have the “escape factor” I experienced in the original, nor does it truly mimic the scent of the actual After Sun Gel, which now pales in comparison to this Eau de Toilette. Ultimately, it reminds me of the hotel lobbies of my early years working in hospitality. It smells fresh, clean, and, honestly, noncommittal (like a hotel should). There’s zero sillage, and it fades fairly quickly, so if you’re looking for long-wear, keep looking or prepare to refresh frequently.
In my eyes, and for my nose, this is an easy way to feel a little refreshed, a little more alert, and a little out of the ordinary without leaving your comfort zone.
